Green Valley Lake is in the running to be part of the top 100 family fishing and boating spots across the nation according to a contest by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF). “Several of the lakes in the sweepstakes have undergone Carr extensive renovations lately,” Green Valley Park Ranger Alan Carr said. “There has been a lot of investment to bring the fishing back to where it should be. We have a good
population of several species and they are good size.” Iowa locations include Lake Macbride (Solon), Lake Pahoja (west of Larchwood), Little River Watershed Lake (west of Leon) and Green Valley Lake. “All the lakes they picked have similar qualities,” Carr said. “Because of past projects, we already had good accessibility with four boat ramps, handicap fishing piers and shoreline access.” Voting for the nation’s top 100 family fishing and boating parks continues through April
12. To enter the sweepstakes and vote, visit www.takemefishing.org. Voters can select their top three picks, plus be automatically enrolled for a chance to win a trip to Disney World. “The fact –that we have three lakes in close proximity (Three Mile, Twelve Mile and Green Valley) makes us one of the go-to places to fish in the state of Iowa,” Carr said. “We attract a lot of people for quite a ways away who will come here to boat and fish.”
Trail extension Construction is scheduled
to pick back up this spring for the Green Valley Lake trail extension. Carr said about 3,000 feet of concrete was poured last fall. “They are doing the hardest section to access first because it is the farthest away from the road,” Carr said. “Once they finish there, they will have more options to go off of the park roads for hauling rock and concrete.” The trail extension will be about 18,000 feet total — close to three and a-half miles — and connect McKinley Park to the campgrounds at Green Valley Lake. Carr is hopeful the project will be completed this construction season. “It is all weather dependent,” Carr said. “We had anticipated to be done last fall, but we had a very wet August.”
After bomber’s conviction, jury to decide life or death BOSTON (AP) — Now that a jury has convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on all charges, even more is at stake in the next phase of the federal trial: The same 12 people must decide whether the 21-yearold lives or dies. Tsarnaev was found guilty Wednesday of 30
counts against him, including conspiracy and deadly use of a weapon of mass destruction. Seventeen of those charges are punishable by death. The verdict was considered practically a foregone conclusion since Tsarnaev’s lawyer admitted he participated in the bombings.
The former college student was found responsible for the deaths of three people who died in the bombings as well as the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer who was gunned down days later as Tsarnaev and his now-dead brother, Tamerlan, attempted to flee.

SPIRIT LAKE — A Dickinson County survey prompting all of Iowa’s county supervisors to anonymously respond toward updating the master matrix for swine facility construction is gaining momentum as the 30-day deadline approaches. Union County has submitted a reply to the survey. Across the state, 34 out of 99 counties have responded to the survey that was sent out the week of March 23. Dickinson County Supervisor Paul Johnson was the driving force behind designing the survey to gather opinions from supervisors across the state. “We wanted to see how the other supervisors feel about it,” Johnson said. “Should the existing master matrix system be repaired to include more local control?” Johnson said the survey responses will be kept anonymous so supervisors can respond truthfully without repercussions from local constituents who are for or against new or expanding swine facilities. “Some counties do not meet every week, so we are expecting a few more responses to come in soon,” Johnson said. “We do not expect to get a response from all 99 counties.” After the information is tabulated, Johnson said the results will be available for state legislators, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Natural Resources.

Under Iowa law, the counties must publish a public notice within 14 days of the Iowa DNR’s receipt of the swine facility construction application. Then, supervisors must score the applicant’s master matrix and submit the board’s scoring and recommendation to the DNR no later than 30 days after the DNR received the application.
