Calving season in high gear for area farmers By JAKE WADDINGHAM
CNA associate editor jwaddingham@crestonnews.com
Area cattle farmers are in the thick of calving season, giving the first preview to the future of Iowa’s cattle herd. The cattle market has continued its upswing and farmers continue to weigh the options of selling high-priced heifers or holding them back to build operation numbers. But the first priority is to get the calves safely on the ground. This season’s weather has not been typical, with
a mild January and cold February. The dry start to March was a positive for farmers who didn’t have to sort cows in extra muddy conditons.
Technology
Nathan Studer, who farms with his father Dale in Union and Adams counties, recently upgraded his operation with a camera update to keep a close watch on his herd of 150 pure bred short horns during calving season. “I put cameras in a couple years ago,” Studer said. “I am able to check in with an app on my smart phone from sev-
eral angles.” Studer does not rely on the cameras to watch over the whole herd. He sorts the “heavies” into his barn, then uses the technology to keep an extra watch on the cows that are closest to calving. Studer works full time during the day, so having the technology to check in on his cattle in the barn gives him more peace of mind. “I can also sleep a little better in the cold of winter when I don’t have a lot of cows Please see CALVING, Page 2

We’ve had excellent feedback.” Kinkade said. “Last year we did very well numbers-wise, so we decided to try it again this year.” As a member of rock band Templeton Fade, Kinkade said he once played a show with Double Vision vocalist Carl Worden. He has also seen Sticky Fingers play live. “They were just phenomenal,” he said. Get ready for a little bit of twang at this year’s Party in the Park in Creston. The Cleveland-based Garth Brooks tribute band John Todd and Shameless and the national country music talent search Country Showdown will be among those taking the McKinley Park bandshell at the June 20 fundraiser for the Creston Parks and Recreation Department. Other confirmed bands are Double Vision, a Kansas City-based Foreigner tribute band; and Sticky Fingers, a Rolling Stones tribute band. John Kawa, chairman of the Creston Parks and Recreation Board, said this will be the first year to feature a tribute band that’s completely country. “We’ve had a lot of people who want country,” Kawa said. “We’re just trying to keep everyone happy as best we can.” Todd Kinkade, who serves on the Party in the Park committee, has been booking the event’s bands for the past several years. He said that while Party in the Park has enjoyed regional acts in the past, he has recently seen success with booking tribute bands. Last year’s show
