Local couple creates endowed scholarship By IAN RICHARDSON

A southwest Iowa couple’s final gift will keep on giving for years to come in the form of multiple scholarships at two southwest Iowa high schools and a third in Nebraska. This year, Creston, Mount Ayr and Lancaster County, Nebraska, schools will begin offering the Jennie (McDowell) and Harlan Layton Scholarship to graduating seniors. The scholarship stems from

an approximately $900,000 gift by the late couple, designated to be divided into funds for the scholarships and four Nebraska nonprofit organizations. Each school this year has received $6,000 in total scholarship money, drawn off the interest from the fund. Creston has chosen to divide the gift into three $2,000 scholarships this year. Applications are now open. “That’s probably our largest single endowed scholarship that we have,” said Creston High School

Principal Bill Messerole. “Just knowing that’s going to be there year after year — that’s going to help not just current students but generations of kids.” Mount Ayr has divided its funds into four $1,500 scholarships. Mount Ayr guidance counselor John Larsen said that covers a sizable portion of this year’s senior class. “If you look at it with our graduating class this year, we’re in the

Fairground upgrade 2016-17 plans in beginning stage calendar: fewer days, early outs CRESTON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

AFTON — The Union County Fairgrounds in Afton will soon get a face-lift. Plans are in the works to upgrade the fairgrounds in the next few years. Construction is tentatively planned for 2017. “We have a great county fair, but we have a good problem. We have a lot of youth because of the great 4-H leaders we have and the great extension that we have in Union County,” said Ben Adamson, Union County Fair Board vice president. “We have more kids wanting to do sheep and wanting to do hogs, ... and we really don’t have enough space in the current buildings to expand.” Adamson and Union County Fair Board President Brad Van Gelder appeared before the Union County Board of Supervisors to give an update of what they want to do.

Upgrade Currently, fair board members are changing the fair’s legal status from nonprofit to 501(c)3 in order to be able to accept more and larger tax-deductible donations.

Next year’s calendar will be Creston’s first with fewer than 180 school days. ■

The peeling paint on an animal building at the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton shows part of the reason Union County Fair Board members plan to upgrade. Building construction won’t begin until 2016, once board members change the fair’s legal status in order to accept more donations at larger amounts.

The next phase of the upgrade is to decide on a building plan. “I think, ultimately, what we’re leaning toward is to take down the existing buildings that we have and bring in one large building that would house the hogs and sheep together,” Adamson said. The style of building fair board members are looking into is a combined building. A general idea would include a show arena in the center of the large structure, with

pens attached for cattle on one end and sheep and hogs on the other. This is similar to the main building at the Wright County Fairgrounds in Eagle Grove, which is a long building containing a show arena and animal pens. “We’ve got a committee

that’s been put together to explore ideas, and they’re coming up with a plan,” Van Gelder said. “There’s a lot of different ways it could go. But, right now, we’re still in the planning procedure. FAIR | 2A

When the first day of school rolls around this August, weekly early dismissals will be a thing of the past at Creston Community Schools. The one-hour early outs have been standard for the past two years, allowing teachers time for professional development each week. But in the 2016-17 Creston Community Schools calendar, approved Monday evening, the early outs are gone and, taking their place, are eight full days off from school, designated specifically for professional development.

It’s a move Superintendent Steve McDermott said will result in more time for teachers to learn. “In the last two years, we’ve done one-hour early outs every Wednesday, which on paper looked like an hour and 15 minutes a day (for professional development), when it ended up being about 45-50 minutes a day together,” McDermott said. “It just didn’t function well.” McDermott said the eight full days, interspersed throughout the school year, will also include many of the meetings that have been taking teachers out of their classrooms during normal school days. “We’ve tried to move all (those meetings) off of student-contact days so our students have their teachers as often as possible and they do not have substitute teachers nearly as often,” McDermott said.
