DIAGONAL — Time to gear up and get out on the ice. A two-person ice fishing tournament will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Fogle Lake in Diagonal. “It’s just something we’ve done probably 12 or 13 years,” said Les Elliot, organizer. The event, which takes place at the lake and camping area north of Diagonal, was not held the past few years because of poor ice conditions. The cost is a cash-only $20 entry fee per person, and registration is from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. that day at the boat ramp. “We’ve had as few as 12 teams, and as many as 35 teams,” Elliot said. “It’s going to be a nice day. It’ll be in the mid-40s. I’m guessing we’ll have from 30 to 35 teams, somewhere in there.” Winners will receive 75 percent of the entry fee
and 25 percent will go toward walleye stocking at Fogle Lake. Crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, red-ear and green sunfish will be the only species accepted at the 3 p.m. weigh-in. “Hopefully we have a beautiful day, and hopefully it’ll be a safe day,” Elliot said. “I was on the ice myself this past Sunday, and it was nine-inches thick.” Elliot, who said the event is scheduled every year the ice is thick enough, said the event is good for the lake and the county. “It’s good to fish the lake because the more fish you can take out of it, it helps with the life cycle of the lake,” Elliot said. “It’s just a good all-around event. It’s good for the lake, it’s good for the town. It brings people to town.” All state laws regarding fishing license and ATV registration will be in effect during this tournament. For more information, contact Elliot at 641-3447477, or visit the Fogle Lake Ice Fishing Tournament Facebook event page.

More than 300 Union County students in grades K-12 cast their votes Tuesday in the largest youth straw poll in Iowa history. Organized by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, the 2016 Iowa Youth Presidential Straw Poll included more than 50,000 students statewide. Schools encoura g e d students to vote in both Republi- Pate can and Democratic Straw Polls. The age groups and grades varied depending on the school. Participating schools in Union County included East Union, Creston and St. Malachy. Bernie Sanders was Union County’s top Democratic vote-getter on the Democratic side with 40.7 percent, followed by Hillary Clinton with 32.1 percent. Donald Trump was the clear favorite on the Republican side, earning 28.7 percent and nearly doubling runner-up Dr. Ben Carson, who had 15.9 percent. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio tied for third with 14 percent. Sanders and Trump also won statewide. Trump garnered 25 percent of the Re-
publican vote, with Marco Rubio sitting in second place with 18.4 percent. Dr. Ben Carson is just behind him with 18.0 percent, and Ted Cruz is in fourth place at 15 percent. More schools are expected to turn in results today. On the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders was the overwhelming statewide Youth Straw Poll winner with 53 percent of the vote. Hillary C l i n t o n Sanders finished second at 30 percent, and Martin O’Malley placed third with 10 percent. “I think it’s important that young people’s voices are heard and that we give them an early opportunity to participate in our elections. I hope this is just the beginning of a lifetime of civics engagement for them,” Pate said. “I also hope Iowa maintains its first-in-the-nation status for a long time. It is vital to this state.” The Iowa Youth Presidential Straw Poll is part of the Caucus 101 curriculum developed by Secretary of State Pate for Iowa schools. Pate encouraged schools to conduct both a Democratic and Republican Straw Poll. All of the presidential candidates submitted videos with messages aimed toward Iowa youth as part of the curriculum. Many schools used those videos to inform the students about each candidate prior to the Straw Poll. Donald Trump refuses final Fox News debate MARSHALLTOWN (AP) — Donald Trump on Tuesday bowed out of the final Republican presidential debate before the leadoff Iowa caucuses, saying Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly is “a lightweight.” With 48 hours to go before the faceoff, campaign manager Corey Lewandowski confirmed Trump’s decision Tuesday evening after a press conference in which Trump lashed out at Kelly and said she’d been “toying” with him. “He will not be participating in

wounded veterans. Iowa hosts the nation’s opening presidential primary contest on Monday. “With me, they’re dealing with somebody that’s a little bit different. They can’t toy with me like they toy with everybody else,” he said. “Let them have their debate

night, a Fox News spokesperson said Trump is still welcome to participate in the debate, but will not be allowed to “dictate the moderators or the questions.” “Capitulating to politicians’ ultimatums about a debate moderator violates all journalistic standards,” Fox said. The Republican National Committee said the decision was up to Trump. “Obviously we would love all of TRUMP | 2A
