Coloma problems lasting Township has been discussing concerns with finances since 2007 BY DAVID GIULIANI dgiuliani@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 525
ROCK FALLS – For years, Coloma Township has struggled with properly recording its finances and reporting them to the public, documents show. It also has been late in paying its payroll taxes. But township officials rarely
discussed the problems from 2007 to 2012 – if meeting minutes are any indication. They started to become focused on the financial issues only this year. Other issues – monogrammed jackets and a plaque with trustees’ names – seemed to grab more attention during monthly meetings of the board of trustees.
Inside Township officials allowed to hire their family members, A4. In 2012, Whiteside County was withholding more than $400,000 in property tax revenue from the Rock Falls-based township.
Why? Because township Supervisor Debra Burke hadn’t turned in certificates proving she had published 3 years of financial statements in the newspaper – a situation she blamed, in part, on health issues. COLOMA CONTINUED ON A4

Shelter from the storm Habitat for Humanity brings joy, new home to Sauk Valley family BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 521

IXON – There’s a new home in Dixon. Pale green with red shutters and a white door, it sits at the end of a cul-desac on the southwest side of town, near the train tracks. It’s cozy and warm. And on this Sunday, it’s full of people – all of them excited at the idea of handing over the keys to the family that will soon live in it. It’s a family of three: the mom, Megan Holbrook, 9-year-old Blayke, and Keeley, 6. And together, along with the people who helped make this dream a reality through Dixon’s Habitat for Humanity, they’re huddled inside on a stormy day. This Sunday marks the 21st home dedication for Dixon’s Habitat for Humanity. The group has been around in Dixon since 1992; they completed their first home in 1993. During the beginning of the ceremony, Keeley fidgets with the cardboard laid down to protect the house’s new carpeting from the muddy shoes traipsing through it.

DIXON – The drama director of VIVA! Performing Arts School is free on bond after he turned himself in to police Saturday morning. Police issued a warrant on Friday for Tim Boles, who is charged with failing to report sexual abuse allegations that had been made against VIVA! vocal instructor Robert Campbell by a former student. Boles is charged with failure to report abuse or neglect, a class A misdemeanor that could result in a fine of $2,500. Campbell, 31, was arrested Nov. 4 on three counts of aggravated sexual abuse. Dixon Police began investigating Campbell after a former student sent an email alleging the abuse to Dixon Public Schools Superintendent Michael Juenger and other administrators.
