County escapes tornado’s fury Area personnel headed to area devastated by tornado to help with recovery efforts By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — Trained emergency personnel from Bureau County are on their way to the Washington, Ill., area to assist with recovery efforts after the area was devastated Sunday afternoon by a tornado. On Monday, Bureau County Red Cross Director Lori Compton said trained disaster volunteer Mike Hellberg from Princeton was headed to the Washington area on Monday morning to help with the Red Cross’ disaster assessment work. Bureau County’s emergency response vehicles and personnel have also been alerted and are ready to go if needed, she said. As always, there will be financial needs in that disaster recovery effort, and donations are always much appreciated, Compton said. Bureau County Sheriff John Thompson has

MALDEN/MANLIUS — Three area schools are working with the Bureau/ Putnam County Health Department to implement ways to improve the health of their students, staffs and communities. Becky Piano, a health educator from the Bureau/ Putnam Health Department, has announced the health department is working with the Bureau Valley, Malden Grade and Putnam County School

districts through the We Choose Health Grant program. Piano said she will provide professional development for the staff of those districts to improve the rate of fully-engaged students during recess and physical education. The activities in physical education will target or limit a student’s wait time to be active in games. Recess will now have more indoor equipment that will allow students to become active

PRINCETON — As donations began to roll in following Typhoon Haiyan’s trail through 36 provinces within the Philippines, Attorney General Lisa Madigan urged Illinois residents to be on the lookout for fundraising scams. The attorney general’s office advised donors to be wary of requests for clothing, food or other questionable in-kind donations.
