DePue buys former bank building Village still working on how it will utilize the space By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com

DEPUE — The village of DePue is in the process of purchasing the former bank building that most recently housed a Heartland Bank and Trust Co. branch. The DePue bank branch closed its doors in September after they reported a decline in customer traffic at the bank location. Mayor Eric Bryant recently explained the village board agreed to purchase the building from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) at a price of $20,000. “I think early on it was listed in properties for sale for $65,000. When we called, they reduced the price and asked $40,000. (The village offered) $20,000, and they accepted,” he said. “We made it work. We think we got a great deal, and hopefully, we make good use of it.” Bryant said it was brought to his attention the FDIC had asked Heartland to remove a large, antique vault from the building when clearing the location. The vault weighs about 9.5 tons and has been a part of the bank building for years, Bryant said. Bryant said Heartland was looking into tearing out a window to have the vault removed, because it was too large to remove through a doorway. With fear of damaging the building structure, and the removal of a safe that holds historic value to DePue, Bryant said the village decided to step up and make the purchase. “We didn’t want to see that safe be taken out of there,” he said. The village has made attempts to attract a new bank to move into the location. Bryant expressed concerns about the village no longer having a bank in the village.

PHS: The report card is in Berlinski discusses PHS scores By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON – Princeton High School students continue to score above academic state averages, according to the 2013 Illinois Report Card.

The recently-released Illinois Report Card shows PHS students have had above state averages for the PSAE (Prairie State Achievement Exam) for the past four years. As an example, PHS students had a composite score in reading and math of 65 percent of its students meeting or exceeding state standards, compared to a state score of 53 percent.

In explaining some of the information on the PHS Report Card, PHS Principal Andy Berlinski said the PSAE has two components. Day 1 of the testing is the ACT which tests English, math, reading and science, and Day 2 is the WorkKeys testing for applied math and applied reading, which

Same-sex marriages in Bureau County Governor expected to sign law Nov. 20 By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — Starting in June 2014, same-sex couples will be able to obtain marriage licenses in Illinois. Currently, those couples have been able to get civil union licenses through county clerk offices throughout the state. On Friday, Bureau County Clerk Kami Hieronymus said her office has processed

seven civil union applications and licenses since the civil union legislation went into effect in June 2011. Four of those civil union applications in Bureau County were processed in the first eligible year, in 2011; there was one application in 2012. So far this year, there have been two civil union applications processed through her office, she said. The civil union application and license

is returned to her office and processed just like a marriage license would be. Once the new same-sex marriage license becomes effective in June, she does not expect any additional paperwork or expense to her office. County clerk offices in neighboring Whiteside and Lee counties have each recorded 10 civil unions since June 2011. In comparison with the number of civil union applications handled through her
