What about those pneumonia shots? Ask about the pneumonia shot while at the doctor

By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — While many are out getting vaccinated for the upcoming flu season, another preventive to look into while at the doctor’s office is the pneumococcal vaccine, otherwise known as the “pneumonia shot.” Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs which is caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. The infection can cause mild to severe illness in people of all ages. According to Diana Rawlings, director of the Bureau/Putnam County Health Department, common signs of pneumonia include cough, fever and trouble breathing. “Each year, about 1 million people in the

United States are hospitalized with pneumonia and about 50,000 people die from the disease,” she explained. “In the United States, most hospitalizations and deaths from pneumonia are adults.” The common causes of viral pneumonia are influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and the common cause of bacterial pneumonia is Streptococcus Pneumonia. Who is most at risk of catching pneumonia? Adults 65 years of age or older; children younger than 5 years of age; people who have underlying medical conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart disease; and people who smoke cigarettes, Rawlings said. Globally, pneumonia

Going to the dogs ... The Bishop’s Small Dog Rescue in Wyanet held a vendor and craft show Oct. 11 at Darius Miller Park in Princeton. The show was a fundraiser for the 501(c)3 public charity. All dogs at the shelter have been saved from death at a kill shelter. The shelter is capable of handling up to 20 dogs at this time, but it has hopes to expand. A change for the Red Cross Nationwide reorganization won’t affect local chapter By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — The American Red Cross is undertaking a nationwide reorganization effort, with the Bureau County Red Cross branch to now become part of the

Northwest Illinois Chapter. Bureau County Red Cross Director Lori Compton said the Bureau County office, located in the Prouty Community Building in Princeton, has been a part of the Quad Cities Red Cross Chapter since 2008. The Quad Cit-

ies chapter was part of the Midwest Region which covered counties in both Illinois and Iowa. With the new reorganization effort, Illinois will now be divided into two regions, a Northern Illinois Region and a Southern Illinois Region. The regional division is based on population, with Interstate 80 being a general dividing point, she said. The important thing to

know is the Red Cross services will not be diminished at all, Compton said. In fact, becoming a part of the Quad Cities chapter several years ago provided a greater increase in resources to the Bureau County office and now, as part of the Northwest Illinois chapter and the Northern Illinois Region, there will be
