Bike path work progressing 500-foot sea wall constructed By Lyle Ganther
“The project is coming together.”
Workers began putting rock in Big Bureau Creek Monday, July 20, in the continuing project to repair the Hennepin Canal bike path between Locks 6 and 7 between Bureau and Tiskilwa. “The project is coming together,” said Scott Dekeyser, superintendent of Phoenix Corporation of Port Byron, the firm hired to shore up the canal’s levee that had been eroded away by Bureau Creek’s water during numerous floods over the years. Dekeyser said 2,800 tons of rip rap boulders weighing between 200 to 500 pounds each will be placed in Big Bureau Creek next to a 500-foot long sea wall designed to prevent further erosion of the bike path once it is finished. The sea wall was placed 45 feet in the ground by another contractor. Twelve trucks are hauling the boulders this week from Vermilion Quarry near Oglesby to the job site. Each truck can carry 14 tons of boulders at a time, meaning about

200 truckloads will eventually be hauled to the site. About 2,000 tons of sand was also hauled to the site to help in draining water from the bike path. More dirt will be trucked there from a site north of Tiskilwa to bring up the bike path to its former height. Dekeyser estimates the work will be done by the end of August or first of September depending on weather. Work first began June 9 on the bike path repair project with truckloads of gravel hauled to be placed on the bike path to allow for the heavier trucks to drive on the bike path designed for bikes, hikers and horses. This picture was taken the first of June when work first began on restoring the bike path along the Hennepin Canal between Tiskilwa and Bureau. Bureau Creek had eroded the bike path during many floods over the years to the point where the path was closed earlier this year when it was too dangerous to use. See another photo on page 4.
Grandkids: A source of Pride & Joy? Food pantry campaign has a three-fold focus By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Township Food Pantry has found a unique way to start a collection for its most demanded item during the summer months. The Pride & Joy summer cereal campaign calls on area grandparents to honor their own grandchildren by donating cereal — one box for each grandchild. Jan Martin, Hall Township Food Pantry director, explained when grandparents drop off a box or boxes of cereal, a label with their grandchild’s name is placed on the box to recognize that grandchild. In addition, to create a giving visual, volunteers at the food pantry have started a chain with the name of the honored grandchild on each link. Why grandparents? Martin said after much discussion and reminiscing, the food pantry board members discovered the strong bond of a grandparent and their love to feed those grandchildren is a perfect combination of giving.

Ottawa firefighters Local 523 hosts international motorcycle rally By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com
Firefighters understand the balance and focus necessary during operation. They are finetuned on the speed of ignition and the importance of every compo-
nent to be firing on all cylinders. They caution against reckless behavior and dedicate their lives to grasping every hand they can as they fly toward the open road to freedom. It’s no wonder so many of them ride motorcycles. Ottawa Firefighters
Local 523 hosted the 2015 International Association of Fire Fighters - Motorcycle Group national rally Thursday, July 30, and around 300 bikers motored into Central Illinois. Adam Wampler, a Local 523 firefighter for 11 years, likened the celebration
