The state of the district Endress delivers an overview of Bureau Valley

By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com

MANLIUS — Bureau Valley (BV) School District Superintendent Steve Endress gave a state of district report — basically an overview of the district — to board members on Tuesday, July 26. Here are some of the highlights: Student demographics Most of BV’s student demographics are the same compared to last year. Endress pointed out the only graph that continues to change is the number of low income students. Endress

said for the first time, the district surpassed 50 percent. “The board has looked at some innovative programs based on that. If things continue to trend in that direction, we’re going to find ourselves in the position someday to have above 60 percent, which makes a lot of the things we’ve been trying over the past six months a lot more feasible,” he said. Student attendance Endress noted the district continues to see a slight decline of student enrollment in the district. During the last two years, the district’s

enrollment has declined more rapidly, he said. “I’m still hoping to plug that hole, but it does not appear we will be able to do so in this coming year,” Endress said. When it comes to attendance rate at BV, the district sits at 95 percent compared to the state’s average of 94 percent. The district has a 2 percent chronic truancy rate compared to the state’s average of 9 percent. Also, BV has an 8 percent student mobility rate compared to the state’s average of 12 percent.

PES efforts paying off District No. 115 making necessary financial adjustments to move forward By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — Superintendent Tim Smith talked end of the fiscal year finances at the Princeton Elementary School (PES) Board meeting Monday, July 25. Smith said the fiscal year ended June 30, and the state still owes PES $242,313 … although they did receive their first local extension from the county, and because things were done electronically, PES received the funds seven to 10 days earlier than they would have otherwise. The district switched credit cards over the course of the year to get a cash back benefit, and Smith said hopefully in the future,e they could accumulate around $1,000 per year in cash back rebates. “That money we didn’t have, so our transition to the cash back card is paying off, literally,” Smith said. Concerning district finances, Smith said they had $2,969,223 on deposit at the end of the fiscal year. On the revenue side of the budget, they received 97.06 percent of the revenue due the district. On the expense side of the budget, PES expended 92.25 percent of what was budgeted. “In the working cash fund we budgeted $1,600,000 — which we assumed necessary for transfers between the education, building and transportation funds — but we only transferred $1,100,000 during the fiscal year, so that’s very good news,” Smith said, noting Hopkins and Associates will arrive the first week of August to audit the district books before giving an official
