ISBE kicks PARCC to the curb SAT to replace controversial PARCC testing By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com

Since the state began requiring students to take the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment two years ago, testing season became very time consuming at Princeton High School (PHS). “Basically, it took three, 75-minute periods to take the exam in English, the same thing in math. It was almost a month we had to block out to take that test,” said PHS Principal Andy Berlinski, adding those testing sessions

took away valuable time for teachers to offer instruction to their students. That schedule should be less time-intensive next year after the Illinois State Board of Education announced Monday, July 18, it would be scrapping the PARCC test for high school students. After not administering a statewide college entrance test last year, ISBE announced it would provide the College Board’s SAT exam, including a writing component, to all public high school juniors instead of the controversial PARCC test. Grades 3 through 8 will continue to take the PARCC assessment.

An ISBE news release announcing the switch said discussions between officials, students, parents and educators emphasized the need for all students to receive an equitable college exam. Many also stressed the amount of time spent taking tests needed to be reduced. “I’m excited about the SAT for a couple of reasons,” Berlinski continued. “One — (the SAT) is a college entrance exam that our students can actually use. ... And two — it’s free for families. That’s such a huge thing for many of our kids to get a free college entrance exam.” Berlinski said the switch to the SAT vs. PARCC will create a lot of substantial changes. Instead of the great amount of time needed to administer PARCC, the SAT

to exceed $125,000. Following the meeting, BPART project developer Larry Kerrick, confirmed the building being considered is located on the corner of Locust and Front streets. Kerrick said the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) still has to approve the sale of property before the purchase becomes final.

Kerrick said while the building will be used for vehicle storage now, there are plans to eventually expand and build offices onto the building. As previously reported in the Bureau County Republican, Kerrick said having the entire operation housed in one location will improve operations and help preserve the life of the fleet. Currently, BPART is
