THE HISTORY OF TWO SISTER VILLAGES

Algonquin’s modern development began nearly a century before that of its sister village, Lake in the Hills. Known as the “Gem of the Fox River Valley,” Algonquin is nestled in the foothills of the valley. After the indigenous Potawatomi people, Samuel Gililan became the area’s first settler in 1834, relocating from Virginia. He was soon followed by other settlers. The settlement was officially named Algonquin in 1847. The arrival of a new railroad in 1855 spurred growth by enabling farmers to transport their dairy products to Chicago. Incorporated as a village in 1890, Algonquin soon became a popular summer retreat for Chicagoans seeking a getaway.

In 1906, the first village hall was constructed at 2 S. Main St. This building served the community in various capacities for 90 years until a new village hall was built in 1996 at 2200 Harnish Drive. The original building now functions as a community center, preserving a piece of the village’s history.

Algonquin gained national attention with the Algonquin Hill Climb, an uphill automobile race held from 1906 to 1913. This event tested the skill and endurance of drivers and their vehicles from across the country. Winners were awarded the prestigious silver Algonquin Cup, bringing fame to the village.

Lake in the Hills, located in McHenry County, was incorporated in 1952 but has roots dating back to 1923. Federal Judge Walter La Buy moved to the area and began purchasing hundreds of acres around what would become Woods Creek Lake. He planted pine and oak trees and expanded the lake using mule-powered dredging.

The 1940s marked further development when William Platt acquired property from La Buy. In 1947, Platt and his family established the Lake in the Hills Development Corporation, transforming the area into a planned vacation community centered on natural hunting and fishing opportunities.

Over time, vacation homes evolved into permanent residences. In 1950, the Property Owners Association was formed to handle road maintenance and snow removal. The community incorporated as a village two years later. Platt donated his sales office at 55 Hilltop to serve as the first village hall. New halls were established at 1111 Crystal Lake Road in 1959 and at 1115 Crystal Lake Road in 1992. The current village hall was constructed at 600 Harvest Gate in 2002. Since 1990, Lake in the Hills has experienced a significant residential boom, with the population soaring from under 6,000 to nearly 30,000.

ALERT FUND

The ALERT Fund (Algonquin Lake in the Hills Emergency Recovery Team) helps small businesses get back on their feet after an unexpected disaster.

This program is intended to assist in disaster recovery when an incident is not covered by insurance, a business is under-insured or the cost of damages is less than the insurance deductible. Grants of up to $1,000 are awarded to local businesses or organizations that have experienced damage – due to vandalism, burglary, fire, wind, flooding, etc. – and need help to cover the cost of repairs or the insurance deductibles.

ENTREPRENEUR ACADEMY

The Entrepreneur Academy helps small businesses train up staff, attend workshops and participate in industry associations through scholarships. This program is designed to empower small business owners and their teams by providing the resources and opportunities needed for growth and success by offering scholarships to support business owners and their staff in gaining valuable skills through classes, workshops, industry associations, and seminars.

The Annex Restaurant & Lounge Break-In | ALERT Fund | August 2025

After an overnight break-in that shattered an exterior door and targeted the gaming ATM, The Annex Restaurant faced over $1,200 in out-of-pocket damage and cleanup. The ALERT Fund grant of $1,000 supported door replacement and security upgrades, helped cover costs not reimbursed by insurance, and stabilized operations so the team could continue serving the community without prolonged disruption.

BREWHAUS 31

Water Main Break | ALERT Fund | September 2025

An unexpected underground water main break forced BREWHAUS 31 to close for nearly three days and incur more than $10,000 in emergency repairs. The ALERT Fund grant of $1,000 helped offset immediate plumbing and restoration costs, bridge insurance deductibles and coverage gaps, and speed reopening—so owner Jimmi Patel and his team could keep staff working and welcome guests back quickly.
