Diet Free program helps those struggling with weight

o often, people diet and end up gaining the weight back.

Wellness Manager Leigh Anne Hall of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers sees and knows this phenomenon. That is why she introduced a 10-week lifestyle change program to the Grundy County area last fall.

The program called Diet Free has met with success and some of the members continue to come to a support group meeting at the hospital.

The overall average for weight loss was a little over four pounds per person.

The program’s success led Hall to start a second session, which is currently underway.

The program focuses on eight healthy habits that people who may be overweight, have high blood pressure or high blood sugar numbers can use to help keep those numbers in check.

Hall said that instead of a diet, the program focuses on eight healthy habits that form the basis

of good health practices. In working to establish these healthy life habits, people don’t need to be “on a diet because after the diet ends, people go off their diet,” she said, and frequently the weight comes back on.

The eight healthy habits, which include things such as drinking more water and eating breakfast each day, are lifestyle changes which the participants are encouraged to incorporate into their daily routines. Hall believes the videotaped presentations by Zonya Foco have exactly the right approach to teach these habits.

Hall pointed out she has a group of employees who are able to participate in the Diet Free program because they are able to

access the videos and view when time allows. The technology allows these employees, who might not be able to attend the sessions because of their schedules, the chance to participate.

Anyone can go to the Diet Free website and sign up on their own for $145.

However, when you register through Morris Hospital, the fee is just $69 a person, thanks to funding provided by the Holderman-Meadors Endowment for Women’s Health at Morris Hospital, held at the Community Foundation of Grundy County.

In addition, Morris Hospital will fully reimburse your $69 if you attend or view eight of the 10 sessions.

Colorectal screenings save lives

By MORRIS HOSPITAL & HEALTHCARE CENTERS Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, claiming 50,000 lives each year. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about one in 20, and an estimated 140,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

While those statistics are sobering, there’s good news too. Colorectal cancer is highly preventable thanks to screening tools such as colonoscopy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, if everyone age 50 and older were screened regularly for colorectal cancer, as many as 60 percent of deaths from this disease could be avoided.

“Colorectal cancer surpasses breast and prostate cancers as a leading cause of cancer death in both men and women over the age of 50,” Richard Rotnicki, D.O., a gastroenterologist on the medical staff at Morris Hospital, said. “But it’s largely preventable with early screening and detection.”

Most cases of colorectal cancer begin as small, noncancerous clumps of cells called adenomatous polyps. About 20 percent of the population has them and doesn’t even know it. Over time, some polyps

Individuals age 50 or older, and at average risk of colon cancer, should have a colonoscopy every 10 years to screen for colon cancer, Rotnicki said. The exams should contin-

ue until age 80. Those with a parent or sibling who has had polyps or colorectal cancer should ask their physician whether they should begin colon cancer screening tests at a younger age and have them more frequently.

“If your doctor doesn’t mention colonoscopy to you, absolutely ask about it,” Rotnicki said.

A tiny video camera that’s used during colonoscopy allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon.

If detected, polyps or other types of abnormal tissue can be removed at the time of the screening for further study and diagnosis. For some, those polyps would have eventually become cancerous.

“Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colorectal cancer prevention,” Rotnicki said.

Colonoscopies are performed by gastroenterologists, general surgeons, and other specially trained physicians.

Easing the difficulty

Morris Hospital uses new therapy to help improve swallowing

A

new treatment offered through Morris Hospital’s Speech Therapy department may be helpful to people suffering from dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing.

“Dysphagia is the medical term for the symptom of difficulty in swallowing,” said Ali Bute, speech therapist at Morris Hospital who has special certification in VitalStim Therapy. “The condition can be caused by stroke, traumatic brain injury, head and neck cancer, or progressive neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s. The goal of VitalStim Therapy is to reduce the chance of aspiration, discontinue or reduce the need for tube feedings, or advance the patient to a more normal or normal diet consistency.”

Dysphagia symptoms often include having to swallow multiple times, being unable to finish a meal, changing voice quality, the feeling of having

food stuck in the throat or recurring pneumonia.

While dysphagia often affects stroke victims, it is also commonly seen in seniors; in fact, nearly 75 percent of all nursing home residents show some degree of dysphagia.

The VitalStim Therapy System utilizes neuromuscular electrical stimulation to strengthen weak muscles involved in the act of chewing and swallowing and to help recover motor control.

During a therapy session, Bute attaches electrodes to the patient that deliver small, electrical impulses to the muscles responsible for swallowing. She uses results from video-swallow exams to analyze and determine which muscles need to be targeted and where to place the electrodes.

The treatment plan is customized for each patient depending on the diagnosis.

Diet, heart disease linked VIEWS Dr. Syed Ahmed Heart disease and diet are closely linked. That’s because diet influences a number of conditions which can lead to heart disease, including overweight and obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), and high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia).

The statistics for obesity alone are alarming. More than 130 million Americans are overweight or obese because of the dietary and physical activity choices they make.

People who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop high blood pressure, high levels of triglycerides (blood fats), high levels of LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), low levels of HDL cholesterol (the “good cholesterol”), and diabetes.

In order to reduce the chances for obesity and heart disease, it’s important to follow a heart-healthy diet.

A heart-healthy diet is not a “diet” in the traditional sense.

Rather, this is an eating plan that focuses on making good food choices for the heart. A heart-healthy diet means a diet that’s low in fat, cholesterol, and salt, and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fiber. Clinical studies show a heart healthy diet can reduce heart disease risk by up to 36 percent.

There are two types of fats that should be especially limited in the diet: saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats are found most often in animal-based foods such as meat and dairy products.

Some plant-based foods such as palm oil, palm kernel oil and coconut oil also are high in saturated fats.

Trans fats can also affect a person’s risk for heart disease by raising LDL (bad) cholesterol and lowering HDL (good) cholesterol. Trans fats are commonly found in fried foods such as french fries and donuts, as well as pastries, biscuits, cookies, crackers, stick margarines and shortenings. On food labels, the words “partially hydrogenated oils” essentially means trans fat.

Controlling sodium intake is another important guideline for a heart healthy diet.

We do know that a high salt intake increases the risk of high blood pressure. For a general rule, 2,400 mg of salt a day is a healthy diet amount.

However, those who have a history of high blood pressure should only take 1,500 mg of salt a day. Prepared foods such as canned soups and vegetables, cured meats, and some frozen meals will likely already have salt added to them. Always check the nutrition label for the sodium content per serving.

While saturated fats, trans fats and sodium should be consumed in moderation, there are several types of foods that have been shown to decrease the risk for heart disease. In other words, these foods are good choices for a heart healthy diet. We are talking about foods that are high in soluble fiber and fortified with plant stanols or sterols.

If you’re not familiar with plant sterols and stanols, these are substances that occur naturally in small amounts in many grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Since they have powerful cholesterol-lowering properties, manufacturers have started adding them to foods. You can now get stanols or sterols in margarine spreads, orange juice,

cereals, and even granola bars. One important study of people with high cholesterol found that less than an ounce of stanol-fortified margarine a day could lower “bad” LDL cholesterol by 14 percent. The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends that people who have high cholesterol get 2 grams of stanols or sterols a day.

Other heart healthy foods that show pretty strong evidence of lowering the risk for heart disease include: foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts, nuts and olive oil.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of fat found in fish oil and certain plants and nut oils. This type of fat has been shown to lower the risk for heart disease and sudden death from heart disease by lowering triglycerides, decreasing the risk of arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms) which can lead to sudden death, decreasing blood clots, lowering blood pressure and improving the health of arteries. Salmon, tuna, trout, herring, sardines, and mackerel are all good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, along with flaxseed, soybeans, walnuts, certain dark leafy greens, flaxseed oil, soybean oil, canola oil and olive oil.

And finally, be sure you exercise regularly and limit the amount of alcohol you drink. Women should have no more than one alcoholic drink a day. Men should not have more than two alcoholic drinks each day.

Treating PAD

Doctors advise taking prolonged leg cramps, pain seriously

A

passing leg cramp commonly called a “charley horse” is usually nothing to get too worked up about. A sports drink and some muscle stretches will bring relief.

But when leg pain during physical activity routinely stops you in your tracks, it’s time to see a doctor. While clogged arteries in the heart get most of the attention, arteries in other parts of the body can become blocked in the same way – and cause potentially serious consequences.

Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, is a general term that refers to artery disease anywhere outside the heart, including the arteries that supply blood to the legs, arms, brain, kidneys and other organs.

“The most common kind of PAD involves the arteries of the legs and is usually caused by a narrowing or blockage of the vessels that carry blood from the heart to the legs,” said Govind Ramadurai, M.D., a board-certified interventional cardiologist on the medical staff at Morris Hospital. “The narrowing is primarily caused by a build-up of fatty plaque in the arteries known as atherosclerosis.”

Claudication is the medical term for leg pain that happens during physical activity. Most people describe the pain as a cramp that occurs during exertion and is relieved with rest. The pain – which is most commonly felt in the calf, thigh, hip or buttocks – occurs because the blockage prevents the legs from receiving the proper blood flow to keep up with demand.

“When leg pain occurs each time you exercise and goes away after you stop, it could

According to the American Heart Association, about 8 million Americans have PAD. It most commonly affects men and women over the age of 60.

Other than advanced age, factors that place a person at greater risk for developing PAD include smoking, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, diabetes, high cholesterol, a family history of PAD, a history of coronary artery disease and obesity.

“The worst combination is

a diabetic who smokes, since both are major risk factors,” Ramadurai said.

Along with pain, additional signs of PAD in the legs includes hair loss on the legs or feet, smooth shiny skin, skin that is cool to the touch especially if accompanied by pain while walking, decreased or absent pulses in the feet, nonhealing ulcers or sores on the legs or feet, a pale, bluish or reddish discoloration of the skin, impotence, and cold or numb toes. These symptoms are serious and could mean

tissue death is beginning to occur.

When PAD is suspected, a doctor usually performs a quick, noninvasive test called an ankle brachial index (ABI) to check and compare blood pressures in the arm and ankle.

“The ABI test compares the two blood pressures. A low ABI number can indicate narrowing or blockage of the arteries in the legs, leading to circulatory problems and increasing your risk for heart attack or stroke,”

“The most important thing to remember is that if you have PAD, you’re two to three times more likely to have underlying heart disease,” Ramadurai said. “If you have persistent leg pain during exercise that goes away with rest, it’s very important to see your doctor.”

Routine screenings for women are simple and necessary

any women feel taking care of their families is their top priority. Often children, a spouse and aging parents are the focus of their health concerns, making it easy to forget to take care of themselves.

But for women, routine checkups and screenings are vitally important. Early detection can be the difference between living a long, productive life and not being able to care for their families.

Here are some guidelines and new technological advances that can make big differences for women.

Blood pressure and cholesterol screenings are easy and valuable indicators of heart disease. There also are a number of heart screenings available. In fact for February, which is heart month, there are programs to learn about lifestyle changes that can decrease the risk of heart disease, as well as special offers on screenings. Mammograms are still the best first defense against breast cancer. One in eight women will get breast cancer, but if found early, survival is 98 percent. Digital mammography is the gold standard, and now, there is 3-D mammography that produces even clearer images, especially important for women who have dense breasts.

Women, ages 21 and older, should also get routine Pap tests to screen for cervical cancer.

Today, new technological advances make it possible for women to have gynecologic procedures, such as hysterectomies and fibroid removal,

performed with a robotic surgical system. Using the daVinci, skilled surgeons are now able to reduce pain and recovery time for patients and leave virtually no scars.

Bone density testing is another simple screening, especially important for mature women. In fact, the National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that one in

two women 50 years or older will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in her lifetime. That’s twice the rate of fractures in men. The good news is that it is possible to improve bone health.

Also starting at age 50, women, as well as men should get screened for colorectal cancer. A colonoscopy is painless test, but it can,

ultimately, prevent colon cancer.

A YMCA in Morris?

City soon may be getting its own facility on west side of town

rogress is being made at bringing Morris its own YMCA facility.

Land has been bought at Route 6 and Saratoga Road on the west side of town; Missy Durkin has been named operations director with Ken Iverson as program director; and organizers are scouting for a temporary location in Morris while plans continue on the building.

“Folks are craving that kind of amenity in our community,” Durkin said. “The YMCA is about that holistic family approach, and more people are also beginning to see the value of the programs we have here now, thanks mostly to Ken.” Iverson has been overseeing Y programs in Morris since his retirement from teaching eight years ago. This year, there are three programs for kids and one for adults, and they are becoming more popular. The adult program is the 3-on-3 Basketball League, and the kids’ programs are the youth volleyball league, summer camp, and the youth basketball league – all co-ed.

This is the middle of the season for the YBL, which has 350 kids participating from grades kindergarten to sixth. It’s an appreciated way for children to get good physical activity and have some fun during the cold winter months.

“It’s their chance to get some experience in the game,” Iverson said. “We don’t even keep score, and the kids are randomly assigned to teams to have it be competitive. ...

Everybody has a good time.”

This season, there are 36 teams in the league, with parents as the coaches. Iverson carefully mentors the coaches and referees to make sure they understand that this isn’t the

NBA. For many kids, it’s their first exposure to sports of any kind, and Iverson knows it’s important to culture a love of the game and good sportsmanship.

He lets the coaches go out on the court anytime they want to give the teammates some advice. As the season progresses, there is less of the coaches on the floor and more of the kids just playing.

“It’s more like a controlled

scrimmage,” Iverson said.

“And the refs are as much coaches as they are referees.”

Iverson said there is much gratitude for the schools that give the programs the venue.

Youth basketball is held at White Oak Elementary School; volleyball and summer camps at Saratoga School; the men’s 3-on-3 basketball at Shabbona Middle School; and other summer camps at Immaculate Conception School and Morris

Community High School.

The kids’ summer camps began last year and were very successful, Iverson said. There were two co-ed camps offered per week in June and July, with each one centering on a particular interest, such as fishing, wrestling, baseball, flag football and POMS. The men’s 3-on-3 basketball league will begin this spring, the week after youth basketball ends. It began three years ago

after some fathers of kids in the program had so much fun coaching and participating that they wanted to play again themselves.

“It’s like an open gym,” Iverson said. “Whoever comes will play.”

Many in the community have become involved in the Morris YMCA programs, including many volunteers and about 50 local businesses that sponsored teams, and organiz-

ers hope more support will be coming for the new building.

“Everybody seems to recognize the good the Y will bring,” Iverson said, “and they want to do their part to help make it a success. ... It’s a positive thing to help your community and then having a national organization standing ready to make it happen.”

rden Tatum finds reward in her business everyday. She gets to love the way she looks and she gets to help other women and men love the way they look, too.

She tells a story of a client in her 50s who is just thrilled by the service she received at Tatum’s business.

“Her face has transformed,” Tatum said. “She is very very happy with her results.”

Tatum owns Body Shapers at 103 E. Jefferson St. in Morris. While she has been in that location for about two years, the modality that transformed her client’s face is fairly new.

The Miracle Face Lift uses no knives, no surgical instruments at all. Each session takes about an hour and Tatum describes the experience something akin to a massage.

“Your experience would be soothing and relaxing,” Tatum said. “Most clients fall asleep during the one hour treatment.”

The new technology is computer generated.

“It lifts the facial muscles and fills the lines,” Tatum said.

Tatum is a license esthetician who has been doing anti-aging for 20 years. She was introduced to the technology at a trade show.

“I saw the transformations happening before my eyes just people walking by and willing to try it,” she said.

Her client Rhonda Cook, who also owns Me Tu Boutique in downtown Morris, saw results on her first visit.

“It made [my] skin look super smooth and youthful,” Cook said. “I did see a difference right away. ... That healthy glow was there immediately as well.”

The technology was invented by Gary Pullock – co-inventor of the pacemaker.

“The technology was actually invented for the purpose of people who had experienced strokes in the face and he had a heart for wanting to help to match the other side of the face,” Tatum said. “Anything that had been sagging, he wanted to be able to lift those muscles.”

After that, it found another use.

“Because it makes new skin, it made its way into burn victim hospitals to renew and generate new skin very quickly,” Tatum said.

And now it is available for clients who want to boost their skin and look younger.

“It looks like someone has gone on vacation for 6 months,” Tatum said. “There is a relaxed look on the face. It looks lifted, it looks toned and youthful. It’s very natural.”

Tatum trusts the technology to not only use on her clients, but also on herself.

“I do my own treatments

and I would love for someone to do them on me that way I could sleep,” she said with a laugh. “I honestly can say that I look five years younger just lifting my eyelids and under my chin.”

When clients sign up for a treatment, they can specify a trouble area, such as eyelids or laugh lines and Tatum will work on those areas specifically during the treatment. She also will go over the client’s whole face.

“I would spend most of my time in that area and I would spend a little bit of time over the whole face,” she said.

“We’re boosting collagen and were boosting elastin.”

Tatum recommends most clients do the procedure 10 times for optimum results.

Cook began her journey with the treatments about two years ago and estimates she has done between 12 and 14 treatments.

“The results are pretty impressive for me,” Cook said.

“I have got some good genes as far as having a youthful look.”

Take care of cats, dogs during winter

ogs and cats both may need a little extra care during these long winter months. Dogs especially may be used to playing outside with the kids or going for walks in the neighborhood, and just lying around all day in the winter is as bad for them as it is for their humans.

Exercise helps pets keep their muscles strong and toned, and their bodies trim and healthy. They also need to exercise their minds, just as humans do.

Bonnie Latta, owner of Bone-ifide Care, which offers pet sitting and dog-walking services, said some of the working breeds like retrievers and border collies need more exercise than other breeds, while basset hounds have a lower energy and need a little less.

Latta says there are indoor games to keep dogs moving and interested. One she suggests is the “find it” game. It begins with the owner placing a treat fairly close to the dog and saying, “find it.” Little by little, treats are moved farther away from the dog. Eventually, they can be placed in other rooms, and the dog can use his or her nose to discover it with the “find it”

command.

“It’s good exercise in the house, and they can use their brains,” Latta said.

“You can put it under the coffee table ... or up on the corner of the coffee table.

Nothing too difficult. It can be visible, like by the corner of a bed.”

Some dogs even run treadmills, she said. The owner must be with the dog at all times when he’s on the device, Latta said, and he must not be tethered or tied to it in any way.

Latta said sometimes a little bit of peanut butter on a wooden spoon dangled in front of the treadmilling dog makes it more interesting and motivating for them.

“They can lick it while they’re walking,” she said. “It’s a reward for them and an incentive.”

Walking outside is still a wonderful activity in the winter, she said, as long as it’s not too cold. The dogs get sunshine, fresh air and stimulating scents.

“Outside exercise is the best because of the variety of smells,” she said. “Let them sniff all they want. Scents give them information. It’s like the ground is a big newspaper of information for them.”

Some of the shorter-haired breeds will need doggie sweaters, she said, and

booties protect against the cold and salt, if the dog will wear them.

Jennifer Bilyeu, president of Spay It Forward, a nonprofit, all-volunteer service that improves the welfare of animals, said cats need to get exercise and have their minds stimulated, too.

When cats get anxious or too bored, she said, they can self-groom to the point of licking their fur off.

“Cats stress more easily than dogs do,” Bilyeu said.

Cats enjoy exercise that entices their hunter instincts, she said, like chasing and pouncing on a laser dot or a toy.

Make sure the light doesn’t get into their eyes. Some owners put up climbing “trees” in the house for their cat’s activity. Some even install catwalks up high around rooms to give their pets more of a challenge.

Good nutrition is important, too. Cats are carnivores, Bilyeu said, and they need a meat-based diet.

For dogs and cats, Anja Carlson, of Cupid’s Kitchen Creations, makes homemade sweet potato treats that she steams, then dehydrates, and grows wheatgrass that she sells to pet owners in 4x4-inch plats. They’re great nutritional additions to their diets, she said.

District 101 Recreation Center available to students after school, on weekends

F

or 4 1/2 hours most weekdays, and for three hours on most Saturdays and Sundays, the District 101 Recreation Center is a school year option for anyone looking to exercise.

Located just to the west of – and connected with – Morris Community High School, the rec center is open most days from roughly the first day of school until mid-June. Its services are typically offered from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. and from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends.

Those services include basketball on the three courts in the field house, swimming in the indoor pool and working out in one of the two rooms stocked with equipment. They are not restricted to members; for a drop-in fee of $5, or $3 for MCHS students with an I.D., anyone can gain one-time access to the rec center.

“I think the rec center has been a positive asset for the community since it opened,” District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said. “When it first opened, it was maybe the only place in town where you could find some of the things that are offered. Now, with the health clubs that have opened, there is more competition for usage, but I still feel it serves a good purpose.”

Though rec center director Amber Sharp says the field house is used primarily for pickup basketball games during rec center hours, there are occasionally other activities in it. Sometimes one or more courts are closed to the public because they are being used for a game or practice by an MCHS team. On Mondays

When such events interfere with the availability of the field house, or when a MCHS swimming and diving meet causes the pool to be closed, Sharp makes that information available in two ways.

“I print out a monthly calendar so everybody always

knows what’s going on,” Sharp said. “We’re also on Facebook, and if something changes, I post it on Facebook.”

Two exercise rooms are adjacent to the field house. One houses free weights, and the other Sharp describes as the “circuit room.” The latter is supposed to receive some new additions at around press time.

“We’re getting two new

upright bikes and a new treadmill,” Sharp said.

The pool is staffed with lifeguards both in the morning and and in the evening; if for some reason a guard is absent on a given day, Sharp says, the pool will not open. Beyond being open for general swimming, the pool is periodically home to swimming lessons and lifeguarding instruction.

Because lifeguards and other personnel must be paid, and other expenses covered, everyone who uses the rec center must pay for doing so.

Members are exempt from the drop-in fees, and memberships are available to both Morris residents and out-of-towners, though they are less expensive for those who live in the district.

Rec center budgetary shortfalls are the responsibility of District 101.

“In the early days, when there wasn’t as much competition from other health clubs, maybe it was a little more self-sustaining than it is now,” Halloran said, “But yes, the district funds it, and memberships do offset some of the costs.”

Pulmonary rehabilitation often improves patients’ health, lifestyle

alter “Sam” Natyshok of Coal City describes himself as someone who has always been short-winded. But about two years ago, he noticed a dramatic change when he began experiencing shortness of breath when he walked to his car after a day at work.

A frequent traveler, he was also having troubling breathing when he was traveling on an airplane at night.

That’s what led Natyshok to a consultation with a pulmonologist, followed by a diagnosis of lung disease, a prescription for oxygen and a referral to Morris Hospital’s pulmonary rehabilitation program at the Diagnostic & Rehabilitative Center on Gore Road in Morris.

When he started Pulmonary Rehab, Natyshok said his life could be described in one word: sedentary. How his life has changed since then. In fact, he said his life has completely turned around.

“Pulmonary Rehab has made a huge difference in my life,” Natyshok said, who started out with a commitment to the 12-week Phase II Pulmonary Rehabilitation program that involves education and supervised exercise twice a week.

“Now I can unload 24 bags of mulch and do yard work, something I could never have done before the program,” he continued.

At pulmonary rehab, Natyshok is joined by others who also are suffering from pulmonary disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis or other pulmonary problems.

M.D. “The purpose of the exercise is to strengthen the patient’s muscles and increase their endurance, so they can better complete their daily activities,” Virginia Landers, respiratory therapist at Morris Hospital, said.

Along with exercise, participants receive education on how to reduce the risk of lung infections, breathing strategies

and techniques that can help improve the ability to carry out daily activities. Additionally, the program promotes social interaction and emotional well-being, all the while offering support for those who require it.

Natyshok saw such positive improvements in his breathing after the completion of Phase 2 pulmonary rehab, he decided to continue with the Phase

3 maintenance program. In Phase 3, participants can continue exercising twice a week for as long as their physician approves.

“Initially I hated doing the treadmill, but now I know that I have to work hard to get better. I feel the improvements, and that’s the best part,” he said.

Get Fit 24/7 open to patrons ’round the clock

here’s no longer a good excuse not to exercise, even if you work midnights or swing shift.

At least, that’s the opinion of Kim Quinn, district manager for Get Fit 24/7.

With the October 2013 opening of Morris’ newest fitness club, clients can come in and get a good workout whether the sun is going down or just coming up.

“It takes away the excuses,” Quinn said.

Nearly everyone knows, or has heard, that exercise makes people feel better. It raises their self-esteem, prevents certain types of cancer and wards off diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, among others.

When an exercise facility is convenient and accessible, people are more likely to utilize it, Quinn said.

Get Fit 24/7 Morris is in the former HealthSmart facility. Owner Scott Sypolt has five facilities in Diamond, Wilmington, Manhattan, Monee and now Morris

that are all open 24 hours a day.

The nighttime fitness buffs look pretty much the same as the daytime ones, Quinn said. They see a lot of police officers, nurses and refinery workers.

Before the Diamond facility was open 24 hours, Quinn would get in to work at 5 a.m. People were waiting in line at that hour to get in their workouts before starting their day.

“People come at all hours now. There’s a huge demand for it,” Quinn said. “We really don’t have a busy time, we are spread out.”

Morris manager Albert Colin said that the response to the 24-hour facility has been huge in Morris. People were working out at all hours Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Nearly everything that’s available during the day is available overnight, Colin said, with the exception of personal trainers and group classes.

“Everything is normal, they can do pretty much the same things,” he said.

With a larger “women’s only” workout room in the remodeling stage, women will

soon be able to pop their own Insanity or P90X DVD into the player and hold their own class at 2 a.m. if they like.

It will also be an area to do yoga, stretching and have some cardio equipment.

“It’s been received very well [in Morris],” Colin said. “It changes everything.

You can come in as soon as you get off work and finish your day with a strong workout no matter what time.”

The all-night facilities are safe and secure, Quinn said. Each client has a key card and emergency necklaces, there are cameras everywhere in the facility, and all TVs, music and lights are on.

“You come into the club and it’s up and running,” she said. “People feel comfortable and very safe. It really works out awesome.”

The best part of the concept is that people no longer have to work around somebody else’s schedule.

“You have to make time for fitness,” Quinn said. “If you don’t make time for fitness now, you will make time for illness later.”
