The high school student perspective For several years now, the Kane County Chronicle has featured a high school columnist on its opinion page.

Many readers probably remember former columnist Mel Mazuc, a Kaneland High School student who went on to attend college at the University of Missouri.

Mel was followed by current columnist Courtney Phelan, who recently graduated from Geneva High School and is set to attend St. Mary’s College in Indiana this fall.

As Courtney transitions to college, she will wrap up her column. She has done outstanding work for us and has received a lot of positive feedback.

We wish her all the best as she starts a new chapter in life.

That being said, the Chronicle is seeking a new

Lauzen seeks applicants for county Metra board seat

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Think you’ve got what it takes to help lead the Chicago area’s commuter rail agency?

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has announced that he is accepting applications from those interested in representing Kane County on the Metra board of directors.

The applications can be submitted to the Kane County Board Office at the Kane County Government Center, 719 Batavia Ave., Building A, Geneva, until Sept. 3.

From there, the applications will be evaluated by

“a special review panel” beginning Sept. 5 and will narrow the field to three to four finalists. Lauzen then will interview the finalists and present his appointment to the County Board for approval, according to a news release from Lauzen’s office.

Applications must include a resume and cover letter outlining qualifications and explanation of interest in the position, the release said.

The selection process will be similar to one Lauzen used earlier this year to appoint Kane County’s representative on the Regional Transportation Authority’s board of directors.

The county ultimately named former Kane County Transportation Director Nabi Fakroddin to that position.

However, Fakroddin resigned this month when it was revealed he also was serving on the Illinois Human Rights Commission, in violation of state law forbidding RTA directors to serve on multiple government commissions.

The vacancy on the Metra board was created when former Kane County Board Chairman Mike McCoy resigned from his seat on the commuter rail agency panel amid the fallout from the scandal surrounding the de-

parture of former Metra CEO Alex Clifford.

Since then, four other Metra board members have resigned in the wake of the scandal, including former Metra board chairman Brad O’Halloran.

The Metra position pays $15,000 annually, but it does not include health insurance or retirement benefits.

Following McCoy’s resignation, Lauzen said he did not envy the job ahead of anyone selected for the Metra board, noting the scandals and operational challenges faced by the rail agency.

“They have a really, really tough problem to solve,” Lauzen said at that time.

Official says new mall owners ‘plan to do a lot’

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The investment group working to buy Charlestowne Mall hopes to turn it into a shopping center the community can enjoy and embrace, a representative said Friday.

“It’s our hope that the community will appreciate what we intend to do here,” said Mark Goodman, a representative of SC 3800 Main LLC. Charlestowne Mall, 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles, is under contract to be sold. Goodman said the investment group aims to move forward as quickly as possible.

While members of the group are from different parts of the country, the ownership “will have a strong Chicago presence that will be involved,” said Goodman, president of Mark Goodman & Associates Inc. in Chicago.

Mayor Ray Rogina said he is optimistic that the potential buyers have local ties.

“That bodes well,” he said.

“It means there’s local interest involved.”

Rogina has said the city is ready and willing to talk with the new ownership.

“It’d be great to see a concept plan come before the City Council,” he said.

Discussions with the current owners – California investors who also had purchased a failing mall property in Cupertino, Calif. – never seemed to progress. A study commissioned by the city last year found fault in the owners, as it stated the mall needs an aggressive developer or owner who will invest money into the shopping center and give it a new image.

Since the mall last changed hands in 2010, banners have advertised such changes as an indoor ice skating rink and a seafood and sushi buffet, but neither materialized.

Last year, tenants such as Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works and Claire’s left the mall. Now, Charlestowne – which once had more than 120

is keeping details under wraps until it is further along on its plans, he said, adding more information should be released in the next 45 days.

“We plan to do a lot to the mall,” Goodman said.

Geneva Republican now online, digital

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Republican began publishing in 1878, and its inaugural edition – and all those that followed through 2011 – are now in a digital online database at the Geneva Public Library’s website, www.gpld.org.

It all came about because the library’s microfilm and the machinery to look at it was failing, said Debbie Walsh, head of adult services at the library.

“We’ve known for some time that our microfilm was failing, between brittleness and the device people used to see it and print it,” Walsh said. “We had two devices.

One failed, and then we could not get parts anymore for the other one. People could not service it.”

They started pricing new technology in 2009, but they found it was just as daunting as trying to use the old machinery, Walsh said.

The cost was $12,000 just to buy a new device to read microfilm.

“So we started thinking about alternatives and looked into digitizing it,” she said. “It really was a question of knowing we were not going to allow people to use microfilm much longer.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When the old Coultrap school finally was torn down this summer, its cornerstone, containing a time capsule, was found and set aside.

Nancy Bell, a children’s librarian at the Geneva Public Library, said she decided to use the new, online digital Geneva Republican archive from 1878-2011 to find out what was inside.

“What a perfect tool for all these people who are trying to track stuff down,” Bell said.

Coultrap was built in 1922 as a new high school. Bell recalled that her grandfather was in a photograph that summer. She narrowed her search and found the Geneva Republican coverage of the time capsule and cornerstone to Aug. 14, 1922.

“The article described everything in it – so much for the big secret,” Bell said. “But it shows what the Republican archive can do for people.”

that a metallic box was placed inside a block of white granite.

The box contains copies of the organization of the high school district, the history of Geneva schools and copies of the Geneva Republican, as well as a copy of what the building would look like when it was to be completed and opened as a school in 1923.

Geneva School District 304 board president Mark Grosso said the cornerstone time capsule is being kept in the administration office. Grosso said it will not be opened until a rededication ceremony is held sometime next month to rename the administration center, at 227 N. Fourth St., as the Coultrap Educational Services Center.

Officials decided to rename the center in honor of Harry Coultrap, the district’s first superintendent, and for whom the former Coultrap school was named.

“We have not set a date yet, but it will be in September,” Grosso said.

“The microfilm was not done all the same way,” Walsh said. “Some were negative, some were positive, some were double-sided – it was chaos. They had to go through each frame of each reel and digitally clip each to make it a single frame.”

In May 2012, the company worked on the project 60 reels at a time, finishing this year, Walsh said.

It was piecemeal because library officials did not want to send the whole microfilm collection over at once.

But even if there had been a disaster with the microfilm, the Geneva History Center has a second copy, Walsh said.

The total cost to digitize was $20,175, with $15,000, covered by a grant from the Fabyan Foundation. The rest came from the library’s budget, Walsh said.

One drawback to the digitized system is it lacks the ability to search for keywords, such as a family name.

Walsh said the cost for indexing the system as a searchable database was $85,000.

“There is no way we could do that,” Walsh said.

The library gets letters from people doing genealogy research, who now will be able to search the Geneva Republican online digital database themselves, she said.

What the library used to do was have a member of the

staff use the microfilm to find articles the family was looking for, print them out and mail it to them, Walsh said.

People doing genealogy with an idea of what dates are involved can just go page by page online and then print what they want without involving library staff, Walsh said.

“We have a lot of folks with a connection to Geneva trying to track down information,” Walsh said. “We’re hoping to see patterns. If most requests come from the 1930s, and if we can swing some budgeting ... [and] grant funding, maybe we can just pick off the [decades] that are most important for a searchable database.”

Pederson officially assumed her new position Aug. 12, succeeding Charles Casto upon his retirement.

Pederson is the agency’s first woman regional administrator.

As regional administrator, Pederson will oversee a staff of about 225 employees.

Region III is responsible for regulating 15 commercial nuclear power plants and more than 1,200 materials licensees in seven Midwestern states.

“She is exceptionally well qualified to lead Region III in carrying out our mission of

protecting people and the environment,” said Bill Borchardt, the NRC’s executive director for operations, in a news release. “She has held a diverse range of positions with increasing responsibility and continues to successfully meet the challenges before her.

Her tenure in Region III will mean a seamless transition and continuation of our strong oversight activities in the Midwest.”

A wedding, a chorus frog and a wolf spider GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Spring cleaning. It’s a ritual we’re all familiar with – in spring.

But here at Hickory Knolls, those clean-the-windows, clear-out-the-clutter, powerwash-the-concrete rituals happen almost every week in summer, too, thanks to our newfound popularity as a party and wedding venue.

The results of this turn of events are largely positive.

I’ve turned into a neat freak, which everyone agrees is a good thing. The facility gleams even on nonwedding days.

And, best of all, even with a dust rag in my pocket and a broom in my hand, there’s still a chance to commune with nature.

So there I was last Saturday tussling with some particularly tough hard water spots on the back door, when I happened to look down on the rubber doormats we keep there. Realizing we might need to tidy up around them, I set the vinegar solution down, lifted the mats and found, to my delight, only a little dirt.

Better still, up against the foundation, sat a tiny Pseudacris triseriata, or western chorus frog.

Just slightly bigger than a nickel, these little guys are the strident songsters we hear each spring calling from wetlands and ephemeral ponds. Omnipresent in March and April, they melt into the landscape as the temperature warms, becoming silent and inconspicuous through summer and fall as they disperse into woodlands and fields. And, it turns out, damp

We switched briefly from cleaning to photo-shoot mode, snapping several pictures of the moist critter before relocating it to the shrubbery that would serve as the backdrop for the day’s wedding. A few hours later, the ceremony went off without a hitch. The frog, with its breeding season over, opted to hold its peace – if not forever, at least until next spring.

Another discovery we were grateful to make before the wedding came courtesy of a young visitor in our exhibit hall. I was wiping down the glass on one of the live animal displays when the lad came over and asked, “Did you know one of your tarantulas is loose?”

I’ll admit, this one took me by surprise. Our three tarantulas (two at the front desk, one in my office) live in

aquariums that have secure lids; further, they’re diggers more than climbers. I was trying to envision the circumstances that would have led to a release (more correctly, thinking “How the HECK did that happen??) when the boy pointed to the creature he’d spotted.

There on the carpet, soaking up the warm morning sun, was a large Lycosidae, or wolf spider.

Although shy of tarantula dimensions, this spider, without a doubt, was big.

Big bordering on huge. With legs outstretched, it occupied around 4 square inches of floor space. And man was it fast.

As ambush hunters, wolf spiders are gifted with amazing speed, which allows them to overtake and engulf

their prey. I can’t remember the last time I ambushed, let alone overtook or engulfed anything, so the spider had a distinct advantage right from the get-go. After a couple valiant but unsuccessful attempts to herd the hefty girl toward the door, I opted for the big guns: a wide-mouthed jar and a postcard.

With the spider contained, the alert young boy and his even more aware (maybe wary?) mother went back to the exhibits, and I headed outside to release the wolfie.

I put the jar on the ground, lifted it slightly, and watched as the spider scurried toward a crevice. Dark, quiet and out of the way, it was the perfect spot for a fuzzy, eight-legged beast to bide its time until the wedding activities subsided.

in a whirlwind – pre-wedding tasks like setup and parking were followed by post-wedding duties like wiping up spills and gathering the recycling and trash – with little opportunity to interact with any nature at all, save a wild guest or two.

By midnight, all was quiet again and only one last chore remained. It was time to haul the refuse to the park district’s service center.

As I approached the stop sign on Peck Road at Dean Street, I couldn’t help but notice I was surrounded by sound. Not the radio, for I’d turned it down, nor the traffic noise we are so accustomed to hearing. But rather the sound of what we naturalists call night music – hundreds, maybe thousands, of katydids calling from the trees that form a bower at that intersection.

Even at that late hour, I couldn’t help but pause for a moment or two (or three, since traffic was nil) and listen to the cacophony of insect love calls – males sending out their signals, the females responding in turn. (Unlike crickets and other orthopterans, katydids of both genders stridulate, or make sounds. Males, however, are louder.)

Listening to katydids, in fact insects of all types, is one of my favorite summer activities. It’s good, clean fun.

And a fitting end to a good, clean day.

8OBITUARIES Born: Jan. 19, 1932; in Aurora Died: Aug. 15, 2013 BATAVIA – James W. Walters, 81, of Batavia, was reunited with the love of his life and his Lord on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013.

He was born Jan. 19, 1932, to Donald and Margaret (Halpin) Walters. Raised in Aurora and Neillsville, Wis., Jim married his love, Joan Ellen McDonald, on Sept. 6, 1952.

Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, then worked for Equipto for nearly 50 years.

He always had a project in progress; he loved working on the farm in Big Rock, puttering in his barn and garage or helping his children with anything.

He is survived by his daughters, Debra (Joe) Jenness of Big Rock, Sandra (Scott) Bechtel of Fulton, Laurie Walters of Sugar Grove, Brenda (Dave Miller) Walters of Geneva and Cindy Walters of DeKalb; 13 grandchildren, Katie Jenness, Joe Jenness, Daniel (Amy) Bechtel, Jennie (Shawn) Anton, Stephen Bechtel, Jason (Mia) Hana, Rebecca Hana, David (Samantha) Perfect, Steven (Alma) Perfect, Kira Perfect, Melissa (Scott) Chivers, Kristin (David) Cochran and Brandon Fender; 12 great-grandchildren; four siblings, MarMae McBroom, Donald (Gwen) Walters, Jack (Eva) Walters and Thomas Walters; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Additionally, three 8-foot fluorescent lights valued at $20 each were shattered, and a window was broken. Repairs to the window were estimated at $120.

• Ryan Scott Harloff, 28, of the 7N000 block of Plymouth Court, St. Charles, was charged Tuesday, Aug. 13, with failure to yield, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

• Luke M. Cowart, 23, of the 1300 block of Oakland Circle, North Aurora, was charged Tuesday, Aug. 13, with possession of drug paraphernalia and

possession of marijuana.

• A customer at a car dealership in the 1600 block of East Main Street in St. Charles reported Tuesday, Aug. 13, that his 2003 BMW was burglarized when it was left at the dealership. Stolen items were a $400 stereo, a $500 rear amp and a $400 sub woofer. Wiring was also damaged; repair costs were estimated at $300.

• A resident of the 4100 block of River Edge Drive in St. Charles reported a window was damaged by a BB or similar projectile. Damage was estimated at $200.

• Peter H. Neumann, 26, of the 200 block of Commercial Drive, Sycamore, was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 13, on an Ogle County warrant for failing to appear in court.

Celebration set for Big Rock Campground BIG ROCK – A ribbon-cutting and celebration picnic for the opening of the Big Rock Campground are set for 10 a.m. today at the new campground, 46W499 Granart Road, Big Rock.

A free picnic and camping are scheduled.

The campground officially opened Aug. 2 and features 110 camp sites, including 96 vehicle camp sites complete with parking pads, fire rings, water access and 50-amp electrical service.

BATAVIA – Thirteen businesses in Batavia were cited in a recent liquor enforcement campaign carried out by the Batavia Police Department’s Investigations Division, which is the highest number of citations from a compliance check ever seen by Mayor Jeff Schielke.

A news release from the city indicated that more than a third of the businesses checked – 13 out of 34 – failed the check.

The businesses included package liquors, as well as restaurants and taverns.

“I guess I would describe myself as ... exasperated by the results of our police compliance check,” Schielke said.

“We checked 34 different licensees and to have this volume fail the test is very, very disheartening to me.”

He said there were a lot of businesses on the list that have never had problems with liquor violations before.

Pal Joey’s Pizza owner John Hamel said the compliance check happened sometime last month, and it’s the first time the restaurant failed.

He said the bartender did check an ID, but misread it and has been subsequently fired.

“It’s a necessary thing – police have to do their job,” he said. “I’m very upset at what happened, and we moved to make a correction as quickly as we could. We addressed it with the staff making sure they understand what the guidelines are.”

All servers, bartenders and clerks who served the minors while supervised by police officers were issued citations, according to the release.

They’ve been given notices to appear in court, Schielke said.

He said police check every liquor license holder in the

city when they do compliance checks, and revenues from fines go toward a special fund used by Batavia police for educational programming.

Schielke, who also is the city’s liquor commissioner, said he’s working with a city attorney to enter a compliance agreement with the facilities that failed.

The agreement would allow the violating liquor licensees to pay a fine and ask the server that violated the liquor code to participate in Basset training.

Another compliance check will follow at some point after, he added.

He said if business owners are not willing to submit their employees for training or pay the fine, they’ll go through a full liquor hearing.

“Because of the volume and the number of first-time offenders, we’ll try to go easy on the whole thing,” he said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Nine residential mailboxes on four St. Charles streets were vandalized this week, according to St. Charles Police Department reports.

Police spokesman Paul McCurtain said the perpetrators could be charged with a felony if the damage exceeds $300.

“It’s not a very smart thing to do,” he said. “Some of these mailboxes are easily $300.”

Mailboxes were damaged in the 500 and 2000 blocks of Persimmon Drive, the 1100 block of Stonehedge Road, the 500 and 600 blocks of Steeplechase Road and the 1100, 1200 and 1400 blocks of Keim Trail, police reported.

The majority of the vandalism occurred during late Monday evening, McCurtain said. Damage reportedly was estimated at $100 and $200 for most of the mailboxes.

Rodolfo Perez-Lopez r e p o r t e d l y Rodolfo rear-ended a Perez-Lopez vehicle in the 0-100 block of North Kirk Road at about 7 p.m. He told the other driver, “no police,” and gave him a business card with a disconnected number, according to reports.

ever, reportedly used Perez-Lopez’s cellphone to call his so he would have his number.

Perez-Lopez reportedly left the scene. The other driver met friends before reporting the accident to police, according to reports.

St. Charles police reportedly reached Perez-Lopez by phone and asked him to come to the station to finish the crash report. He never did, police reported.

Just before 11 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Indiana Street in St. Charles for a well-being check of a driver in a white Ford Taurus, police reported.

Upon arrival, officers reportedly found Perez-Lopez slumped over with a

half-empty bottle of beer between his legs. Police said the keys were in the ignition, and the engine was running.

Police woke Perez-Lopez, who was unable to perform field sobriety tests, police said.

Perez-Lopez, 27, of the 2100 block of Illinois Avenue, Aurora, was charged with hit and run, driving without a license, driving without insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content more than .08 percent and two counts of aggravated DUI. He was being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center on $30,000 bail, according to online records Friday.

Hoping for a revitalized Mall Charlestowne Mall is under contract to be sold, and the news has elicited an array of responses from the community.

St. Charles residents and consumers want to see progress at the mall, which today houses just a fraction of the 120 tenants it used to boast.

“I prefer indoor malls,” wrote one commenter on the Kane County Chronicle’s website, “so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the new owner has the business savvy to breathe some new life into Charlestowne.”

“This is great news!” wrote another.

“Hopefully they will have vision and great ideas. I think playing off Von Maur’s success and going for another ‘high end’ retailer like Bloomingdale’s or Neiman Marcus could revive the center and draw shoppers from other areas ... .”

Plenty of ideas exist for Charlestowne Mall, including potential plans that have been outlined by the city. New owners could mean great things for the shopping center.

What’s important is that the current deal lead to improvements, as no one wants a repeat of the inactivity that was experienced under the present ownership.

As we’ve said before on this page, customers will show up to the mall – if they have a reason.

What innovative ideas will new owners bring to the table? Every conceivable option should be considered – from the mall’s design, to its name, to its marketing, to what activities take place there.

And, if the ideas are worthwhile enough, what incentives might community stakeholders offer to get them off the ground?

Mayor Ray Rogina has said the city is willing to speak with those looking to buy the mall, which is encouraging. Discussion with the current mall owners never seemed to progress, but new players could completely change the retail forecast for the city’s east side, where Route 64 construction is soon to be completed.

It’s time to take some chances with Charlestowne Mall. Revitalization can’t come soon enough.

His latest is to do away with inheritance taxes to help small businessmen and farmers. Bear in mind that he has said repeatedly that one of the most important issue is to balance the budget. The fact that this would increase the federal deficit big time never seems to occur to him.

As the law now stands, estates with less than about $5 million are totally exempt from federal inheritance tax.

8SOUND OFF In response to Saturday’s Sound Off “Not really fun,” I say don’t rain on other people’s fun.

It is laughable that uneducated people can hop from Harry Potter to Dungeons and Dragons to animal sacrifices in one paragraph.

The kiddies aren’t taking a page from the Necronomicon.

For heaven’s sake, they are just having some fun directed at fiction. I repeat again … fiction.

Are you also afraid that murder mysteries spawn serial killers? Lighten up.

Completely out of bounds This is just a reply, as a concerned citizen from Batavia, at last weekend’s Sound Off, about the state-of-the-art athletic center at the high school.

I’m like a lot of people who talk downtown when they’re at the coffee shops or at McDonald’s.

The wife and I are senior citizens and, you know, enough is enough with this school District 101.

I think they ought to spend a little bit more time with the city fathers cleaning up the town a little bit better and doing some other services for people who live in town – the 26,000 people in town, not just the students.

This stadium thing is just completely out of bounds with the economics of today. And

Foxes and squirrels I live in the Surrey Hill subdivision in St. Charles. I called into your number in regard to the red foxes that are in my neighborhood.

And on Monday, there was another red fox that came running through the yard, chasing the squirrel. That’s something different to see. I wonder how many people have seen a fox in their area or on their property.

Parade-goers line Route 47 to enjoy kickoff to festival

Employees from Jewel pushed shopping carts, tossing out bottles of water and a few other grocery items to those who lined the streets of downtown Elburn.

And Scouts of different ranks threw candy to fellow youths, who were lined up to watch Friday night as the Elburn Days parade kicked off the village’s signature festival.

The parade kicks off the Elburn Days festival, which is run by the Elburn Lions Club.

Parade participants marched down Route 47, and the end puts them in the vicinity of the festival, which is at Lions Park at 500 Filmore St., Elburn.

The group launched earlier this year, as a companion group to the Knights Against Bullying, who have pushed for changes in Kaneland School District 302.

Renee Dee, one of the leaders of the Kindness Campaign, said she was thrilled with the turnout, and she was excited that some Kaneland administrators – including Superintendent Jeff Schuler – were among those wearing green shirts and marching with the group.

Schuler said it was the first time he participated in the parade.

“It’s a good message and a good cause,” Schuler said.

Big crowds watched the parade, lining Route 47 from north of the downtown area to near Lions Park.

Kaneville resident Mary Nicely was folding up her blanket after the last entrants had passed.

She said it’s a tradition she wouldn’t think of missing, as she’s been attending them for decades and has staked out the same spot – south of the railroad tracks – for 10 years.

She said she arrives at 8 a.m. on parade day to claim her spot, and that dozens of

others are doing the same.

“You know a lot of people,” Nicely said of the attraction of the parade. “It’s a small town. It’s fun.”

Dale Garman, 59, smiled as he waited for a train to pass after the parade was completed. Garman, a Kaneland graduate, said he was in town for a reunion.

Garman now lives in California, but said he will return for such festivities.

He hadn’t been in town for 10 years, and said much had changed.

“It’s grown up,” he said.

The parade brought out classic cars and participants riding on farm equipment.

As representatives from Old Second Bank rode by, “For the Love of Money” could be heard.

Ronald McDonald was in attendance, riding in a float shaped like a giant clown shoe.

The Kaneland High School band performed “Ease on Down the Road.”

The festival runs through Sunday at Lions Park, featuring carnival rides, live bands, food stands, a community stage and mud volleyball.

Route 38 causes grief for local business

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA TOWNSHIP – American Science and Surplus owner Patrick Meyer has five words for the impact of the Kautz Road/Route 38 overpass project that has impacted his business.

“It has not been pretty,” Meyer said. “We’ve seen a significant drop in traffic – some weeks as high as 40 percent on average – when construction started. Sometimes it’s 25 percent a week.

It’s pretty brutal. A lot has to do with the [construction] warnings than anything else. … Customers are complaining on a regular basis.”

The project began Nov. 4, and was originally scheduled for completion Aug. 31, 2014.

But a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation said completion was extended to March 6, 2015, because of ComEd utility relocation delays.

A spokesperson from ComEd did not respond to a request for comment.

The Kautz and Route 38 interchange will be on the overpass that separates the grade over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

The project’s federal share is $30.7 million; the state’s share is $7.6 million; DuPage County’s share is $25,000; and Geneva’s share is $237,000, according to the intergovernmental agreement.

The company also sells online, but Meyer said he has 5,000 items in stock in the store, almost twice what is available online.

“It’s a very unique blend of merchandise,” Meyer said.

“We are a destination store.

Customers will travel to see us.”

Construction manager for the project, Michael Sienza, of Globetrotters Engineering Corp., blamed ComEd, the weather and trains for delays.

“I have to have utilities relocated before I set foot on the job,” Sienza said. “The first six months, we had more rain than any full year of the last 130 years. It’s hurting our embankment work. And we’ve had an ungodly amount of

trains. … No way can we stop a train. All that work is at night when we get to it.”

He acknowledged the long construction schedule causes businesses to suffer.

“We couldn’t be happier if we hold to the schedule,” Sienza said.

Other Geneva Township businesses on Route 38 have been impacted, but more by customers complaining

about the construction than anything else.

“It’s affected business a little bit,” said Henry Stach, an employee of the Sherwin Williams at 33W365 Route 38.

“But Route 64 and Route 56 are just as bad. Painters have to pick one bad road or another.”

feet, his is the largest piano store in Illinois, and remains a destination place despite the construction.

“I’m sure it’s impacted us,” Cordogan said.

“We still have our customers and give people directions to get in and out of here because of the construction. Everyone is waiting for this to be over.”

The company sells starter pianos through high-end pianos costing $30,000 to $80,000.

“Not a lot of people typically drive by and say, ‘I’m going to buy a piano.’ But some people drive by and want to look,” Cordogan said.

“We have the largest piano store in Illinois, so customers drive from great distances to get here.”

Sometimes customers fly in to the nearby DuPage Airport – or O’Hare or Midway – and he sends a car service to pick them up and drop them off, he said.

“You can’t see a piano inventory like that if you live in Paradise Valley, Mont.,” Cordogan said. “They do not have one in their whole state.”

Since 2006, the Downtown Overlay Zoning District has limited street-level commercial space to businesses that generate pedestrian traffic, such as theaters, hotels, salons, restaurants and retailers.

“It would be good to let the market dictate who goes into those spaces,” he said.

Aldermen, meeting as the Planning and Development Committee, supported relaxed restrictions that would allow office uses throughout the overlay district.

Many indicated they would like the new rules to be in effect for two years.

The district covers an area bound by Fourth Street to Third Avenue and State to Indiana Avenue.

First Ward Alderman Dan Stellato said the new rules could prompt businesses other than bars to take over such properties as the former Scotland Yard and Magoo’s.

“My concern is if we don’t do something like this, then that’s what you’re going to get,” Stellato said.

But they also wondered

what will happen with the relaxed rules. Fifth Ward alderman Maureen Lewis was concerned about what looser restrictions might mean for the shuttered shop Vertical Drop.

“That would be a large space not to have any retail in there,” she said.

Anderson excited to play Batavia junior back on course after surgeries

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Doctors recently cleared Lauren Anderson to compete for the Batavia girls golf team for her junior season.

Anderson won’t soon change course and go out for volleyball, but she admittedly owes quite a bit to that sport, too.

An accident during gym class in November sent Anderson to Delnor Community Hospital, where wooziness from taking a volleyball to the face helped prompt the diagnosis of a brain tumor.

Separate surgeries left her fighting and scared, but also reduced the tumor – and Anderson’s hesitance – to a fraction of its original size.

Batavia completed tryouts at Wolf Run Golf Course in Aurora this week. Anderson, a third-year varsity player who occupied the Bulldogs’ No. 1 spot last season, wasted little time resuming that role, her one-tournament IJGA summer resume notwithstanding.

“It’s been an honor learn-

ing from her,” sophomore Rebecca Hasemann said.

“She’s already been a great help this year.”

Teammates look at Anderson and can’t help thinking of what she’s been through since the tumor was diagnosed.

There was the first surgery, in early December, and the initial hospitalization that kept Anderson from coming home until just before Christmas.

There was the second surgery, in mid-March, which

was scheduled to curb the effects of medication that reduced the tumor too quickly.

“It was an experience that I would never want to wish on anybody, but for me, I learned a lot about myself going through something like that,” Anderson said. “And it’s made me stronger as a person, and honestly I’ve taken it and I’ve used it almost as a tool to motivate me more and make me work. Make me stronger.”

Even as Anderson enjoyed a steady sophomore season – qualifying for the Class AA Burlington Central Sectional and shaving about 10 strokes from her 2011 average – Bulldogs coach Morgan Connell occasionally sensed something was off.

Anderson, a violinist with Batavia’s school orchestra, had just returned from an annual music program trip to Florida before she was diagnosed. She soon became acquainted with trips to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and days of missed classes.

The events have spurred Anderson to take better stock of her day-to-day health. She estimates the tumor, which first settled predominantly behind her left eye, is onefifth its original size.

“She was concerned even just three months ago whether she’d even be able to play or be in a tournament or even finish a tournament,” Connell said. “And she did do those

things. She’s come out really really strong.”

Before high school, Anderson knew golf only as a relaxing father-daughter pastime with her dad, Daniel.

Anderson recalls how the sport “just took over me” when she first frequented St. Andrews in West Chicago at age 7 or 8.

Her passion only accelerated when Anderson joined the Bulldogs. Now that she’s back – in her health and her spirits – Anderson happily finds herself consumed again.

“When you go from being a player who’s never been in a competitive environment, you learn a lot about yourself and your game and you learn about techniques from girls who have been in your position more than once,” Anderson said. “You build confidence and perspective.

It’s a different environment, and it gets to be something you enjoy. I love the competition. I love it.”

“I try to keep up with them over the summer to see what they’re playing in, but obviously where it all comes together is at tryouts,” Meyer said. “It’s easy to see after that who’s improved quite a bit.”

This week’s rounds at Hughes Creek in Elburn showed Meyer he’ll be able to count on a handful of upperclassmen. But beyond seniors Brody Kuhar and Matt Yonkovich – top returners from Kaneland’s 10th-place Class 2A team – are senior Stephen Cannell and junior Jesse Denton, who have jockeyed up the lineup nicely with diligent offseasons.

“We lost a lot of solid players after last season, some guys who were a big part of our starting core,” Meyer said. “Hopefully we’ll find some guys who will step up and move into their place. There are guys who are hungry.”

Kuhar and Yonkovich, who were no stranger to summer events around the region, lead the pack.

Both scored during last season’s weather-abbreviated Class 2A state tournament.

Playing alongside recent graduates Luke Kreiter, Connor Williams and Sean Glennon last season added up for Kuhar and Yonkovich, Meyer said.

These days, the pair’s work ethic is rubbing off on the rest of the Knights.

“Obviously, they do everything on the course right, which is huge,” Meyer said.

“Not just playing, but the way they carry themselves and the way they treat their opponents. They lead by example in that way. And they’ve both hard practicers, too. They work really

Adam Durocher has played in 3-on-3 basketball tournaments growing up, and came away curious how organizers pulled off the events.

Now the 14-year-old St. Charles North freshman is perhaps more knowledgable than he ever wanted to be.

Adam was among the key organizers for a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Sunday at St. Charles North that will serve as a fundraiser for both the North Stars boys and girls basketball programs.

Adam was the only teenager to attend the weekly planning meetings leading up to the tournament, not to mention all the effort he put in on his own.

“I was a little nervous in the beginning,” Adam said. “I knew most of [the adults] so I didn’t completely feel like an outcast, I guess. Eventually I kind of took charge and spoke up a little. At the beginning I didn’t want to talk much but I felt I had some good ideas, so they listened, and they were all nice, so I felt good about

Durocher enlisted the support of his father, Jeff, who attended a meeting in May in which the idea for the new fundraiser was broached.

“They never had done one so there was no template of what to do, simple things like what the rules are going to be, how long are the games, what age groups do we have to set up, how much do we charge, what should the shirts look like,” Jeff Durocher said. “Adam had a couple ideas of what the shirts would look like, what the kids would like and he had a lot of ideas about trophies for the winners this week. He sort of made it from scratch.”

The middle child of five siblings, Adam plans to be part of North’s boys basketball program in high school.

He’ll arrive early Sunday to assist with the tournament-day organizing and pledged to stay late to help clean up, but in between, he will play on one of 62 teams that signed up for the 3-on-3

showdown.

“I’m going to hope that everyone is having [a good time] I guess, and nobody is confused or mad about the set-up or their schedule or anything like that,” Adam said. “Hopefully everyone is happy with what goes on.”

Tournament participation was robust enough that a few teams that tried to register this week had to be turned away. Jeff Durocher said the event is expected to raise about $6,000 to $8,000, to be shared between North’s boys and girls basketball programs.

Lacrosse commitments: Graduated Geneva seniors Andrew Schreiber and Steve Laduzinsky recently committed to play college lacrosse at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Illinois Wesleyan is launching its inaugural season of men’s lacrosse in the spring.

Schreiber, an attackman, and Laduzinsky, a goalie, both were all-conference performers for the Vikings.

Laduzinsky was a team MVP in 2012 while Schreiber took those honors in 2013.

Laduzinsky plans to major in accounting while Schreiber intends to pursue business administration.

Marmion sophomore Matt Ferraro shined during last month’s Fargo [N.D.] Nationals, an annual summer showcase of top nationwide talent. The St. Charles resident, competing at 152 pounds, missed last year’s event, as he stayed behind on vaction to visit family in his native Boston. Ferraro caught up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about the experience and the looming school year for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-Chat. The following is an edited transcript:

You were one of four Marmion All-Americans at Fargo Nationals [last month]. Not bad for your first time there.

I think it went great. It was real fun. It was a good

experience, a lot of great competition that taught me what I need to do to wrestle better to beat better kids.

What works, what doesn’t work. … You really have to go with certain moves, more like simpler techniques more than the riskier stuff.

The basic moves. Getting good with those, more than the funky kind of stuff, works against the better kids. ... I can’t wait to go next year and learn a lot more.

What differentiates out-ofstate kids from wrestlers from Illinois?

Out-of-state guys I can tell one, because their technique is different from what it is around this state. In-state, I know a little more what to

cle, keeps me working out, but I think wrestling benefits my football more than football benefits wrestling.

If someone tries to block me, I can hand fight, I can stay low when they’re moving around. And a double-leg [takedown] is just like making a tackle. it comes natural.

What else did you do on summer vacation?

Right before Fargo, I went out to Boston to visit family and stuff. Had fun out there. ... We went and did the Freedom Trail up in the city area and went deep sea fishing and kind of just hung out with family a lot. ... School’s going to start soon. I’m kind of excited a little bit. Should be a fun year.

Special teams look special again Cougars offense BURLINGTON 5, COUGARS 1

While so many refuse to focus on anything but the Bears offense and hope that the arrival of coach Marc Trestman finally will propel that unit into the 21st century, and most of the rest of Bear Nation preaches that defense always has been the Bear way and always will be, it very well could be the Bears’ special teams that are the difference between contending for a playoff spot again this season or taking a step backward.

It is easy to understand how folks might overlook the Bears’ special teams. One could make the argument former Bear Dave Toub was the best special teams coach in the NFL over the past eight or nine years. He’s now moved on to Kansas City.

Devin Hester was thought to be fast-tracking to Canton as the greatest kick returner in the history of the game until Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith made up their minds he would be a receiver at all costs, including seriously diminishing his effectiveness in the return game.

Robbie Gould, the fourth most accurate kicker in the history of the NFL, was lost for the season with four games remaining last year and needed surgery on a damaged hamstring, potentially a death sentence to the careers of some placekickers.

And this Bears club is so thin at some positions fans might wonder if they even can fill out their coverage and return teams. It’s no wonder the specialty units have been virtually ignored thus far in the preseason.

But they’re not being ignored

“We really did want to get a return or two out of Devin because you saw again on the opening kick what an incredible weapon he can be,” Trestman said. “We’re really excited about the year Devin could have.”

Hester is more than Mr. Excitement and a momentum and game-changer. During the Bears’ 2006 Super Bowl season, and again when they won the NFC North in 2011, the Bears led the NFL in average starting field position beccause of all of their special teams work, but in particular because of Hester’s unique return ability.

This could be particularly important this season, if Hester can bounce back because of the time it might take for both the offense and defense to settle into new schemes and new coaching.

New special teams coach Joe DeCamillas couldn’t be happier to have Hester saying “Devin’s attitude’s been great, he’s been great

ever since I got here and we all know what he can do.”

DeCamillas also feels fortunate to have a healthy Gould back.

“He knows an awful lot about the kicking game, he’s a real piece of work,” he said.

DeCamillas is a piece of work as well, having served as the special teams coach with six different NFL teams (Denver, Giants, Atlanta, Jacksonville and Dallas) continuously since 1988. He also carries the title of assistant head coach and there is little concern among NFL insiders that he can pick up where Toub left off.

The one big issue he faces is the roster decisions that will be made to fill out his teams.

“We have a core of veterans who will make changes on special teams difficult. We’ve got a great group.”

Perhaps they do, but . . .

While that group almost certainly will be led by Eric Weems, Blake Costanzo, Zack Bowman and Sherrick McManis, the rest of DeCamillas’ coverage teams will be dictated by roster battles at positions where few clear choices have emerged.

Until decisions have been made on the second and third tight ends, whether the roster can afford a seventh linebacker, if there is a young receiver or running back who can contribute and who the backup safeties and cornerbacks are, the coverage units will have to wait.

quieted in loss For the KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON, Iowa – A second-inning solo home run off the bat of Willson Contreras accounted for the Kane County Cougars only run against the Burlington Bees in a 5-1 loss Friday night at Community Field.

Ryan Crowley (10-6) started for the Bees (48-70, 22-31) and allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings while striking out six batters.

The Cougars had multiple chances against Crowley but stranded runners in scoring position in the second, third and fifth innings.

Overall, the Cougars (49-68, 19-32) went 0-for10 with runners at second or third.

Felix Pena (4-6) turned in the Cougars first quality start since July 31. Pena retired the first nine batters he faced turning in a clean first three innings. The Bees finally got to the Cougars righty in the fourth when Sherman Johnson led off the inning with a base hit. He scored when Wade Hinkle smacked an RBI triple to tie the game. With two outs, Julio Concepcion gave the Bees the lead for good with an RBI single.

In the sixth, the Bees added to the lead on an RBI groundout from Hinkle to score Angel Rosa who had reached on an error by first baseman Rock Shoulders. Pena worked six innings allowing three hits and three runs, two of which were earned. The righty did not walk a batter and struck out five.

By MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com Nobody’s putting Jon Bostic in the Hall of Fame yet – so please hold all emails and snarky Tweets – but it might not be too early to put him in the starting lineup for Week 1 against the Bengals on Sept. 8, whether veteran D.J. Williams is healthy or not.

The 22-year-old Bostic is far from a finished product. And he probably is not good enough to start on a defense that would revolve around him. But on a defense where he’ll be surrounded by Pro Bowl players, proven veterans and rising talent, the 6-foot-1, 245-pound Bostic already has shown enough bigplay capability that the payoff of allowing him to learn on the job might be worth the rookie mistakes.

It’ll be interesting to see how Bears coach Marc Trestman and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker handle this call. The previous coaching staff wasn’t very interested in giving up production today for a better production tomorrow. But with two rookies already starting on the right side of the offensive line, it’s clear these guys think a little more progressively.

The Bears’ defense might be a little better with Williams, a nine-year veteran, starting at middle linebacker in 2013. But if it can be a lot better with Bostic in 2014 and beyond, it might be worth it to live with his mistakes. This team should be able to afford that.

Because even after two games, it’s easy to see Bostic has a big future.

“I think Ray Charles can see it,” Bears linebacker J.T. Thomas said with a laugh after Thursday night’s 33-28 victory over the San Diego Chargers. “Everyone can see it. Young, strong kid. Smart. The main thing is, he will hit you in the mouth. I would love to play alongside a guy like him.”

Asked if he saw the hit, or at least heard it, Corey Wootton’s eyes got big.

“Oh, yeah,” Wootton said. “I had a pretty clean view. I was right there at the 40-yard line.

Everyone was saying it was Lance Briggs-esque. He put a good hit on him.

“He’s been doing great all camp. Had a great game last week, a great game this week.

Special teams, as well. He’s been doing a great job, especially as a rookie stepping up.”

The danger, of course, is that a big play here and there can obscure the flaws of Bostic’s overall game.

Despite Wootton’s enthusiasm, Bostic didn’t really have a great game against the Chargers. He made one great, memorable play. It’s easy to get fooled.

It’s happened before. It might be too soon to get too excited.

“I don’t think so at all,’’ Woot-

ton said. ‘‘Because most rookies are behind the curve and he’s going against starters. It’s not like it’s against the threes.

He’s going against the starters every play and making an impact out there. So I think he’s definitely going to do a great job this season. I’m excited for what he’s going to bring to the table.”

As for Bostic, he knows what’s happening, but is careful not to expect too much too soon.

He still is ridding himself of muscle-memory techniques from Florida, but once he does, it won’t be long before he’s good enough to start. Maybe by Week 1.

“Only time will tell,” Bostic said. ‘‘It’s a long way for me to go. I’m not satisfied where I’m at right now. I have to keep learning. They said in this defense you’re going to learn by experience and day by day. You have to make sure you keep improving.”

It definitely was not the Bears’ plan to have Josh McCown lead the team in snaps in Friday’s preseason game against the San Diego Chargers.

The backup quarterback got 37 reps, or 65 percent of the offensive snaps, because of Matt Blanchard’s fractured knuckle. We can’t glean much of anything from that total, especially considering McCown spent most of his snaps handing it off – he threw only eight passes.

Ignoring the outlier that is McCown, rookie offensive linemen Kyle Long and Jordan Mills, like last week, led in snaps, playing 33 each.

They started on the right side of the line and played through the first half and in the first series of the third quarter.

Both players impressed – mainly Long – and the coaches again have plenty of tape to watch as they try to figure out who will start at right tackle in Week 1.

Here are other observations from the snap counts in the Bears’ preseason game against the Chargers: • Fendi Onobun played in only 10 snaps Thursday night. We know that he is better at his receiving than blocking, and with the Bears running the ball often in the second half, that likely kept Onobun off the field. But that’s not a good sign if it means the coaches don’t have enough confidence in his run-blocking compared to Steve Maneri, Leonard Pope and Gabe Miller.

• It was difficult to discern anything about the receiver competition with so few passes, but Devin Aromashodu did

lead all wideouts with 19 snaps, which could be a testament to his experience and blocking.

• Martellus Bennett: 16 snaps, zero targets.

• Aston Whiteside led the defense with 35 snaps. He had a tackle for loss and helped play defensive tackle when Corvey Irvin went down.

• Taylor Boggs played 31 snaps at center, allowing the coaches to get a good glimpse at whether he can handle being the backup center, or if they’ll need a veteran like Matt Slauson, Edwin Williams or Eben Britton to handle snapping duties if Roberto Garza goes down.

• Tom Nelson is the forgotten man in the competition for safety, but he led the position with 32 snaps. Nelson still is behind Anthony Walters and Brandon Hardin, but no one has “won” the No. 4 safety job, yet.

• Jon Bostic and Isaiah Frey have played in a combined zero regular-season games, so reps for them are important, considering their expected roles this season. Bostic played in 29 snaps. and Frey in 28.

• Cornelious Washington played 28 snaps, but he did not record a tackle. Washington did play in 12 special teams plays, which is key for the rookie, and he showed outstanding speed for a big man running with Michael Ford on the long kickoff return.

• Cornerback C.J. Wilson led all undrafted rookies with 28 snaps.

There could be room for a sixth corner, or to make the practice squad, and he made a nice openfield tackle as he fends for a spot ahead of fellow undrafted rookie Demontre Hurst.

Cubs passing on Sandberg best for everyone involved Now that the Phillies have named Ryne Sandberg their interim manager, I’m sure some Cubs fans are saying, “I told you so.”

But that would be an appropriate response only if the Cubs had announced to the world that Sandberg never would be a big-league manager. They just said he wasn’t for them.

The reason fans wanted Ryno as skipper here had to do with nostalgia, which is the recognized currency in Wrigleyville. Remember how good Ryno was in 1984 and 1990? Remember his two home-run game against the Cardinals’ Bruce Sutter? People get wistful just thinking about the Cubs’ Hall of Fame

Philadelphia replaced Charlie Manuel with Sandberg on Friday, and like a trade that benefits both teams, this was a move that was good for both the Phillies and the Cubs.

But it was best for Sandberg.

If Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein had caved in to fan pressure and named Sandberg manager before last season, poor Ryno would be in the middle of the mess the franchise

finds itself in now. He would be knee deep in what Dale Sveum finds himself in. It’s why Sveum would be better off wearing fishing waders rather than spikes. It’s why if Sveum survives this, it will be a miracle. Count your blessings, Ryne.

No one is saying Sandberg is inheriting a fun-filled pool party in Philadelphia.

At the time Manuel was let go, the Phillies had lost 19 of their previous 23 games.

It’s going to be a tough job for Sandberg, but he has won everywhere he has been as a minor-league manager.

What irritated many of us was the idea that it was somehow preordained the Cubs’ job was Sandberg’s

once he decided he wanted to be a manager. And I’m sure the idea irritated Cubs management over the years. Just because you want something doesn’t mean you get it. And just because fans wearing oversized Harry Caray glasses frames wanted Ryno, so what?

Will Sandberg be a good manager at the big-league level? Part of that has to do with how much talent the Phillies have. Going into their game Friday against the Dodgers, they were 20½ games out of first place in the N.L. East.

But general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. surely will be looking at how Sandberg, private and soft-spoken as a

player, communicates with his troops.

The Sandberg situation had been a trap for the Cubs.

Don’t hire him, and you look like you’re trampling team history. Hire him, and you don’t really know what you’re getting as a manager.

Worse, you could have a fan uprising on your hands if their beloved favorite doesn’t work out.

The Cubs did not miss the boat in letting Sandberg go. They waved as the boat sailed away. It was the right move.

Tim Croft of Sugar Grove, who grew up fishing on the Fox River, caught this Smallmouth Bass, approximately 4 pounds, at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 6 from the shore of Ferson Creek Park. He was fishing with his children, nephew and his in-laws. Tim said in all the years he’s been fishing on the river this was the largest bass he’d has caught.

SPORTS NEIGHBORS BULLETIN BOARD Wasco Diamonds golf outing The Wasco Diamonds girls softball fastpitch program’s 11th annual golf outing will take place Sept. 20 at Kishwaukee Country Club in DeKalb.

Waubonsee fall baseball league set SUGAR GROVE – Waubonsee Community College will be hosting a fall baseball league for high school players who are not participating in any fall high school sports. This IHSA approved league is the area’s longest running and most economical fall league.

More than 2,000 players have participated throughout the past 28 years with hundreds going on to compete at the collegiate level.

The league is scheduled to run

September. Games will be played every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of September beginning at 4 p.m. each day. All games will be played on Waubonsee Community College’s baseball diamond in Sugar Grove and all players signed up are guaranteed playing time.

Each of the eight game days will provide players the opportunity to use Waubonsee’s outdoor hitting facility that features two astro-turfed batting cages and multiple hitting stations.

Individuals interested in playing should attend an organizational meeting at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 27 on the Sugar Grove campus. The meeting will take place in Room 219 of Erickson Hall, Waubonsee’s gymnasium, with a $60 fee due at that time.

Rosary, Marmion to host cross country event Rosary High School and Marmion Academy are hosting a junior high cross country meet for boys and girls in grades 5 through 8 at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Marmion, 1000 Butterfield Road, Aurora.

The event will consist of four races: 5/6th grade girls (1.5 miles); 5/6th grade boys (1.5 miles); 7/8th grade girls (2 miles); 7/8th grade boys (2 miles).

Medals will be awarded for the top 10 finishers and trophies for the top three teams in each race.

The entry fee is $75 per team or $15 per individual, and the registration deadline is Aug. 26.

Snatching moments from chaotic life to calm the mind, body Hawaii was great. We hung out under a waterfall, swam with those sweet sea turtles, and my daughter, so enamored with surfing, got to tackle some real waves.

My son, an avid fisherman, also got to try deep-sea fishing with his dad for the first time (a huge shout-out to Kristie and Captain Mike at Maggie Joe Sport Fishing in Honolulu for hooking them up!).

We squeezed in a luau and the kids jumped off an enormous rock on the north shore of Oahu into the sea a few times, but we did very little lounging on beach chairs. Factor in the crazy bumped-from-our-flight debacle on the trip out there – which resulted in arriving at our hotel 13 hours late around 3 o’clock the next morning – and the redeye-with-three-crying-babies flight back to central-standard time (jet lag city) six days later, and I was exhausted from our vacation.

I needed a vacation from my vacation.

Ha. Instead, I returned home to find that our dear, big red doggie had the blues.

In spite of capable pet-sitting, he’d pretty much chewed a hole in his butt. Really.

(No worries, while we were gone poor Jake got some veterinary TLC from Dr. Doolittle himself, Dr. Bongiorno, and is good as gold, now.)

By the next morning, Holly and Todd were singing the blues, too. Tummy bug.

You know the drill. And that made my plan to hit the road with the kids to visit

Two days later I realized that the upstairs potty had been leaking, needed a new wax ring and had to be “reset.” Resulting, of course, in the need to repaint my kitchen ceiling. Again. Calgon, take me away!

Instead of painting, on Sunday I learned that one of my dearest friends, who’d been battling a serious illness for some time now, had been admitted to the hospital in rough shape.

The next morning, my husband woke early in excruciating pain, and landed, for an overnight, on the same floor at Delnor as my friend (which made visiting them both, between their respective naps and procedures, convenient, at least!). After Todd was admitted, and while we waited for his surgeon to make an appearance, I passed the time checking my messages.

I should have read my book.

Instead, I learned that several of my neighbors were feeling antsy that some poor, apparently alcoholic soul, who may or may not have a history of assault, who may or may not be bunking at a house two blocks from mine, and who may or may not have very recently assaulted a

practicing at Fox Valley Wellness for more than 10 years, is a wonder. An absolute, deep-tissue-working wonder.

After an hour with her I feel like I’ve taken off my body – and my cluttered mind – and draped them over a chair.

Bliss and energy and that “new-woman” feeling, all rolled into one.

As soon as I turn in this column – and take the kids school shopping and finish the laundry and walk the dog and pay the bills – I’ll make that call. (On second thought, though, maybe I’ll make the call before I pay the bills.)

In the meantime, I’ll snatch moments from my chaotic life to close my eyes. Even if it means making the dog lay down with me on some random neighbor’s lawn while we’re taking a walk, should the sun suddenly make an appearance.

Yes. And while I’m resting my head on my big red dog and taking slow, deep breaths, I’ll imagine I’m swimming slowly, ebbing and flowing with the tide, alongside those majestic and mellow sea turtles again. Because when life gets hairy I draw on the good vibes of whatever Zen moment I can quickly recall and dwell there in my mind, if only for a moment. Because a mom’s life – and, indeed, any life – needs that, sometimes.

Before I read through the entire string of comments and learned that authorities had confirmed that this guy (or, you know, someone who looks a whole lot like him) had already been picked up on some other charge and jailed (with, apparently, little hope of making bail), adrenaline had made merry in my veins and I made doubly sure that my kids were safely with our friends.

By Wednesday morning I was seriously depleted. I needed a massage. A nap.

Yoga. Yeah, yoga’s just the thing, I decided, and Rachel, my wonderful instructor at River West Family Fitness, had a class at 10:15. I couldn’t wait. I hadn’t been in weeks. Noah was at his high school soccer tryouts, Todd was resting on the coach – and the doggie was chilling – so I donned my yoga clothes and checked the clock. Perfect. Just enough time to get Holly to the middle school so she could load her school supplies into her locker (which she’d missed doing with the other seventh-graders when she was sick the week before). But dear Holly, who’d been sitting patiently on the back burner for a few days, had other plans. She needed to decorate her locker, too, so that’s what we did. It looks so cool!

Maybe I’ll get to yoga next week.

Zone 5 won’t survive the winter (parsley, basil, rosemary, and dill, among others), saving them is a wonderful way to bottle up a little of the summer sunshine, and guard against the chill of the grey days ahead.

There are several popular methods for saving herbs. Certainly the easiest is air drying.

The free event is open to the public and will take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25.

This year’s event will feature automobiles that traveled the Lincoln Highway during its

first decade; the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the rear engine Porsche 911 sports/racing cars; and four Dream Cars from the Bortz Auto Collection.

Automobiles will be on display along Third Street, which was once a part of the Lincoln Highway, in downtown Geneva.

Participants from all over the country will gather with hopes of winning a “Benz” trophy.

Since the herbs dry slowly, their oils aren’t depleted the way they might be when dried in an oven or microwave, which will actually cook them. Harvest healthy stems, (should be free of diseases, pests, yellowing, etc.), from your herb plants in the morning.

Plants should be mature, but not yet flowering, as the leaves will be most flavorful at this time. Shake lightly to remove soil and insects or rinse with cold water and pat dry.

Secure the stems together using rubber bands or twine and hang them upside down in a warm, dry location.

Check their progress weekly, until they have dried and will crumble. Then store in an airtight container for up to a year.

Air drying works best with herbs that have a low moisture content to begin with such as dill, rosemary and thyme.

If you are looking to speed up this process, you can oven dry your herbs.

(Note: Your kitchen will most decidedly not resemble that of a French farmhouse with bunches of lavender and rosemary hanging from the rafters, but to each his own.)

Place the herbs in a single layer on

a parchment lined baking sheet, set the temperature to 150 degrees, and leave the door slightly ajar for proper air circulation. Remove when crumbly, after about 1-4 hours. Store in an airtight container.

Freezing is another method that has grown in popularity of late, and is particularly effective for herbs that have a higher moisture content like parsley, basil and cilantro. Leaves can be chopped up and packed into ice cube trays. Then fill trays with water or olive oil and freeze.

Alternatively, leaves can be pureed in a blender with a bit of water or olive oil, then fill ice cube trays with the resulting paste and freeze. Cubes can be stored in an airtight container for several months.

Regardless of which method you choose, you won’t regret holding onto a bit of summer’s bounty, and saving herbs from your garden is a fairly quick and easy way to do just that.

They’re always a treat to have on hand, and the flavors will enhance the sauces, soups and stews that will be bubbling on our stovetops all winter long.

‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’ reminiscent of ‘Forrest Gump’

By JOHN ANDERSON Special to The Washington Post Any movie that casts Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan certainly has a piquant sense of humor, but the prankishness of “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” – so named after a title dispute with the MPAA – undermines the serious statements this star-spangled film is striving to make about race, class and politics. Along with missing the movie’s ever-migrating point, viewers may be forgiven for wondering whether “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” might have been titled “Lee Daniels’ Forrest Gump” – its hero challenged morally rather than mentally, but watching history in Gumpian fashion, as a series of cameos viewed through a slightly clueless daze.

Inspired by the true story of Eugene Allen, who served eight presidents during his tenure as a White House domestic and was the subject of a 2008 Washington Post profile by Wil Haygood, the film stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, who grows up amid Southern cotton fields, witnesses the systematic abuse of his parents (Mariah Carey, David Banner) and learns that one goes along to get along.

Cecil spends the movie carrying Jim Crow on his back and fear in his eye; that he personifies, both metaphorically and actually, the “good Negro” of the American Racist Dream is never much of a question. But even as Cecil lives his life slightly adjacent to history, building a heroic film around him requires herculean effort.

Daniels certainly tries. The director of “Precious” (2009) and last year’s gleefully awful “The Paperboy,” Daniels trails Cecil through his near-slave childhood, a civil rights movement that impassions one son (David Oyelowo), a Vietnam War that draws in another (Elijah Kelly) and an election that results in the first African-American president.

What the film never settles on is a point of view: Is the subservience that makes Cecil a success as a butler (“You hear nothing; you see nothing; you only serve,” he’s told early on at the White House) something to be admired, or decried?

Is Cecil someone, as a character in the film points out, who – by virtue of being hardworking and trustworthy – defies racial stereotypes and advances his people? No, his powerlessness,

Robin Williams and Forest Whitaker in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” ultimately, is something shameful.

But even as Daniels strains to emphasize the impotence Cecil feels, as he watches cavalier decisions being made by white men about black men, Daniels can’t resist the commercial impulse to make Cecil a hero. And you can’t quite have it both ways without making a movie with a personality disorder.

On “Precious,” Daniels was working from an Oscar-winning script by Geoffrey Fletcher, but here he has a rather pedestrian screenplay by Danny Strong, who scripted the TV movies “Recount,” about the 2000 election, and “Game Change,” about the 2008 election.

“It’s his world, we’re just living in it,” Cecil’s father tells the boy (really?).

In an exchange with his own son, Louis (Oyelowo), whose Black Pantherism is yanking dad’s chain, Cecil actually says, “I brought you into this world and I can send you out of it” – a line usually ascribed to Bill Cosby, who does not appear among the credits.

In addition to a standout performance by Oprah Winfrey as Cecil’s likably edgy, sometimes boozy wife, there are several moments of cagey insight.

One involves Cecil, pre-White House, working at Washington’s Excelsior Hotel and suffering through a customer’s virulently racist rant about school desegregation.

“Never in my life,” Cecil says on voiceover, “did I dream I’d work in a place as fancy as this.”

There’s no irony to the statement, just compartmentalization and denial.

And it’s a moment that really stings.

Cecil’s overlords – those eight presidents under whom he serves – include Dwight D. Eisenhower (Robin Williams), whom Cecil expects to help his people and doesn’t; John F. Kennedy (James Marsden), who does, despite being a few inches shorter than we remember; John Cusack’s Richard M. Nixon, who, during some Watergate moments, looks less like the late president than he does Orson Welles in “Touch of Evil”; and Alan Rickman’s Ronald Reagan, who looks right but sounds wrong.

The aforementioned Fonda is pretty much on point, but overall there’s very little effort made to transform actors physically or audibly into the people they’re supposed to be impersonating.

Liev Schreiber isn’t short, for instance, but neither is he tall enough for Lyndon B. Johnson, and his Texas accent sounds like it might have originated at the southern end of Central Park.

It’s all stunt casting, intended for cheap, quick laughs, and doesn’t help a movie whose campaign already lacks a certain focus.

• “The Butler” is rated PG-13 and contains some violence and disturbing images, strong language, sexual material, thematic elements and smoking. The film runs 126 minutes.

Language barrier leaves girlfriend out Dear Abby: I recently started dating one of my graduate school classmates. We come from different cultures, but we get along great and I really like him.

My problem is he’s very close to his family, who seem to like me very much, but I always feel left out around them. An example: The nine of us went out to dinner and the whole time they were speaking to each other in their native tongue while I just sat there.

Then, after dinner, his parents asked why I was so quiet.

The family speaks English fluently and are otherwise nice to me. When I confronted my boyfriend about it, he said it would be disrespectful for him to speak to his elders in English.

I want a future with this man, but I know it won’t work out if I can’t be included in his family.

Am I wrong to think they should involve me in the conversation? – Outsider In New York Dear Outsider: In light of the fact that everyone knows you don’t speak the language, their behavior does seem inconsiderate – particularly if it’s happening often.

Perhaps you should speak to them

One thing about your letter does concern me, however, because it raises a potential red flag.

Dear Abby: I have been in a steady, committed relationship with my boyfriend, “Carey,” for four years. We have discussed our future and have agreed that we want to get married and start a family soon.

As a child, I always dreamed of a big, fancy wedding. Carey, on the other hand, says he doesn’t

Dear Reader: Sunscreen products do look different than they have in the past, as new rules for labels are now in effect. These new rules, mandated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have made sunscreen labels more informative and less misleading.

Sunlight exposes your skin to ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA rays age and wrinkle skin; UVB rays cause sunburn. Both contribute to skin cancer. So you want to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB. Sunscreens vary in their protection against UVA and UVB. The best protection is “broad spectrum protection,” which filters out much of the UVA and UVB. Under the new FDA rules, if a label says “broad spectrum,” the product must pass tests proving that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Also under the new rules, the term “sunblock” is no longer allowed, because none of these products block all of the sun’s rays.

“Waterproof” is also banned,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff because water does rinse off some of the creams. It’s just a matter of degree. You want creams that are least likely to wash off when you go into the water. Some creams fit the bill; under the new rules they are called “water-resistant.” This term must be accompanied by a set time for reapplication.

Another big change concerns SPF, or sun protection factor.

SPF is a measurement of how much longer it takes for your skin to turn red from the sun after applying the sunscreen. Sunscreen with an SPF of less than 15 for both UVA and UVB must now carry a warning that it only reduces your risk of sunburn, and does not reduce your risk of either skin cancer or early skin aging.

When you go out in the sun, you want to reduce your risk of sunburn, early skin aging and skin cancer – not just one or two of them, but all of them. Therefore, to reduce your risk of skin cancer and early aging, I recom-

mend you use a sunscreen with the following features: • Broad spectrum protection • SPF of 30 or higher • Water-resistant for up to 40 or 80 minutes Once you buy the right sunscreen, make sure to apply it properly: • Apply sunscreen before you go out.

• Apply enough and reapply frequently. Use 1 ounce of sunscreen (a shot glass full) to cover your body and face.

• Reapply sunscreen immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.

• Apply every two hours even if you don’t get in the water or sweat.

I was raised in Southern California in the years before we understood all the damage the sun could do to your skin. Everyone “worked on their tan,” including me. Several skin cancers later, I wish we had then the kind of potent sunscreens we have today.

Teen’s future stepfather is a recovering alcoholic Dr. Wallace: My parents have been divorced for over three years. Mom has been dating a guy for a year, and they are planning to get married soon.

She said they would be married in Las Vegas because it is really easy there to become husband and wife.

I sort of like my future stepfather, but one thing that really bothers me is that he is a former alcoholic.

He hasn’t had any alcohol ever since he met mom. I remember in one of your columns you said that there was no cure for an alcoholic and that an alcoholic is one for life.

I discussed this with my mom, and she said her future husband is a recovering alcoholic. I didn’t want to make a big issue out of it so I dropped the discussion. That’s why I need you. How long does a person need to be a recovering alcoholic before this person is no longer an alcoholic?

That simply is not true. One alcoholic drink could reactivate the addiction.

And many Souths would then ask their partners why they had not bid six no-trump, which is impregnable. But these declarers should have paused for thought when the dummy came down.

Especially given that South can see every heart honor, the opening lead has all the aura of a singleton. To avoid going down, declarer should take the first trick in his hand and discard dummy’s remaining hearts on the diamond ace and king. Then it is safe to draw trumps.
