Middleweight contenders collide at UFC Fight Night: Vancouver

The UFC returns to Rogers Arena for the first time since UFC 289 in June 2023 for a thrilling UFC Fight Night middleweight main event between Reinier “The Dutch Knight” de Ridder (21-2-0) and Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez (15-2-0). The action begins Saturday, Oct. 18, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with the main event and prelims airing live on ESPN.

Heading into UFC Fight Night in Vancouver, the 35-year-old from Netherlands will be looking to continue his unbeaten streak since joining the promotion in 2023 (4-0) when he faces Hernandez on Saturday. Ridder’s unbeaten record includes his most recent victory over former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker via unanimous decision. Overall, 13 of his 21 victories have come by way of submission, highlighting high-level grappling that has overwhelmed many of his opponents.

Despite Ridder’s recent success, Hernandez, 31, has built a reputation off his relentless pressure and suffocating style of wrestling. He enters UFC Fight Night on a nine-fight win streak and sits No. 6 in the middleweight rankings.

The main event bout is expected to set up the next title shot against current middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev, with Nassourdine Imavov and Dricus Du Plessis also in the mix.

The main card includes bantamweight legend Marlon “Chito” Vera facing off against Canada’s Aiemann Zahabi, while fellow Canadian Mike Malott goes up against the always entertaining Kevin Holland in a welterweight bout.

Fans won’t want to miss any of the action as the UFC returns to Vancouver for the first time in nearly two years for UFC Fight Night — De Ridder vs. Hernandez, Saturday, Oct. 18, at Rogers Arena.

Back in ‘Blue’: Donnie Wahlberg transfers from ‘Blue Bloods’ to ‘Boston Blue’

Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan may be relocating from New York to Boston, but he’s still “Blue.”

After a 14-season run on “Blue Bloods,” the actor moves his police detective character into the CBS and Paramount+ spinoff “Boston Blue,” premiering Friday, Oct. 17. Reagan is drawn to the Massachusetts capital (Wahlberg’s hometown) when the younger of his two sons, Sean — also a police officer, now played by Mika Amonsen (“The Republic of Sarah”) — is injured in a fire set to cover up a murder. The ever-headstrong Danny leaves New York and injects himself into the case, giving him a new partner in Det. Lena Silver (“Star Trek: Discovery” alum Sonequa Martin-Green), a member of a law-and-order family not unlike the Reagans.

Lena’s sister, Sarah (Maggie Lawson, “Psych”), is a Boston police superintendent, their brother, Jonah (Marcus Scribner, “Black-ish”), is a rookie cop and their mother, Mae (Gloria Reuben, “ER”), is the city’s district attorney. Rev. Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson, “Ghostbusters,” 1984) is the family patriarch, and a dinner scene in the first episode upholds a tradition associated with the Reagans. In fact, guest star Bridget Moynahan (“John Wick,” 2014) reprises her “Blue Bloods” role as Erin Reagan, with a literal seat at that table. She’ll also be a director on the new show.

“It is another show about a law-enforcement family,” the friendly Wahlberg acknowledges, “and I can tell you from 14 years on ‘Blue Bloods’ that I’ve met thousands of law-enforcement families,

or people from law-enforcement families, who’ve said how much that show meant to them and how much it means to see families like theirs represented on TV. Having the chance to continue telling the story of a new law-enforcement family, it’s a tremendous honor, and hopefully it lands with all of those [actual] families the same way ‘Blue Bloods’ did.”

Wahlberg, quite literally, hits the ground running with “Boston Blue” in its opening moments. “I hurt my hamstring pretty good,” he allows, “but it’s important to capture and intrigue the audience right away, and also to remind them of the [‘Blue Bloods’] past. I’m doing as Danny what I’m doing as Donnie — learning about this new world and fitting into it, and picking my spots to say, ‘Hey, we might try this instead of that.’ Being open to that has been really fun, and it’s allowing Danny to grow as a character as Donnie grows as a person.”

While “Boston Blue” involves location filming in the title city, it is also utilizing Toronto, for economic reasons. An executive producer of the show as well — along with others including veteran filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer of 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick” — Wahlberg says programming executives “were like, ‘There’s no show if it’s [filmed] in Boston. We can’t afford it.’ And I said, ‘Well, you have to do some things in Boston. You can’t fake Fenway Park or Boston Common.’ And they said, ‘You’re right. Let us work on this.’”

Thus, the plan is for several weeks of filming in Canada, then a week in Boston. “We actually got parts of four epi-

sodes in a week in Boston,” Wahlberg reports. “It was crazy and confusing, but we captured so much. We’ve really made the most of it, and I’m very grateful to the network for being so supportive of our

celebrity q&a

going there. It’s not a small endeavor.”

Get back in blue with the Reagans and the Silvers when the new series “Boston Blue” premieres on CBS and Paramount+ Friday, Oct. 17.

Kurt Russell

OF MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS ON APPLE TV+

Q: Is it true that Kurt Russell is going to do a TV series?

A: Yes, and a very high-profile one. After many years of mainly concentrating on feature film work, the child star-turned-versatile adult talent intends to resume television work in “The Madison,” a contemporary spinoff of “Yellowstone.” Though his role wasn’t officially specified at the time of this writing, it’s expected that the character will be closely linked to the one to be played by Michelle Pfeiffer, with whom Russell starred in the 1988 movie “Tequila Sunrise.”

Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”), Elle Chapman (“A Man Called Otto,” 2022), Matthew Fox (“Lost”), Beau Garrett (“Firefly Lane”) and Kevin Zegers (“The Rookie”) are among others who have been cast in “The Madison,” focusing on a family that relocates from New York to Montana. At this writing, it wasn’t certain if the show from prolific producer Taylor Sheridan will run on Paramount Network or on streamer Paramount+ instead.

Russell has his career roots in TV, having started out in guest roles on such shows as “Dennis the Menace” and soon landing his own series, the 1963-64 ABC Western “The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters.” His home-screen work continued after that with appearances on shows including “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Virginian,” “The Fugitive,” “Gunsmoke,” “Gilligan’s Island” and “The FBI.”

In 1974, Russell briefly was a regular as a member of an immigrant family in the movie-inspired ABC drama “The New Land,” then he was a series star again opposite Tim Matheson in the 1976 NBC Western “The Quest.” After that, theatrical movies got the bulk of Russell’s professional attention, but he did work with his fellow-actor son Wyatt (sharing the same role at different ages, in fact) in the Apple TV+ fantasy-adventure series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”; filming on a second season of that show reportedly has been completed.

J.J. Abrams

Q: Is J.J. Abrams going to do any more “Cloverfield” movies?

What’s stopping him?

A: It’s certainly been a while since 2018’s “The Cloverfield Paradox,” the third film in the “Cloverfield” universe, but Hollywood super-producer J.J. Abrams (“Star Trek,” 2009) is indeed working on a new one. But he’s been saying that for a while now — basically since 2018. As for what’s been stopping him, it seems like a lot of things.

It was announced in 2022 that filming was about to get underway, with Babak Anvari (“Monsterland”) directing. Of course, 2022 was a tough year for filming, with the Hollywood strikes and ongoing pandemic restrictions, and it

seems no filming actually got done. But it looks like that was just a delay — Anvari said in March of this year that he’s still working on it.

Beyond these impediments, there’s also the challenge of Abrams’ schedule. He’s a famously hands-on producer, and that’s particularly true of the “Cloverfield” films, so he would need to have time to devote to it. Considering he’s one of the most in-demand producers in the business, his time is a scarce resource.

Abrams has one movie filming now — a drama called “Ghostwriter” that he’s also directing and writing — and he’s producing another film, the horror “Flowervale Street,” which is currently in post-production with an eye on an August 2026 release.

“Vampirina: Teenage Vampire”Season 1 (Oct. 15)

Fangs, friendship and bloodthirsty adventures await! is series follows Vee (Kenzi Richardson), a kind-hearted young vampire who leaves Transylvania behind to attend a performing arts boarding school in the human world. Now a teenager, she must juggle the excitement and nerves of tting in at a new school while keeping her vampire identity a secret from her classmates.

OF THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX ON NETFLIX

He has a number of TV shows on the go as well, including the legal drama “Presumed Innocent” on Apple TV+ and the HBO Max crime drama “Duster.”

The new “Cloverfield” movie, when it happens, is rumored to be a direct sequel to the first film, “Cloverfield” (2008), an aliens-attack horror film told in found-footage style. The other two films in the franchise, “10 Cloverfield Lane” (2016) and “The Cloverfield Paradox” (2018) are looser follow-ups that exist in the same universe without necessarily telling the same story (saying any more than that would be spoiling the plots). When promoting the first film back in 2008, Abrams said he came up with the idea as an attempt to create a great new monster-movie franchise to rival Godzilla.

Q: I was just watching “Den of Thieves” again and I think I saw Eric Braeden from “The Young and the Restless” in it! Was that him? Is he still acting?

A: Yes, that was Eric Braeden (“Escape from the Planet of the Apes,” 1971), and not only is he still acting, he’s still acting on “The Young and the Restless.” Braeden is best known, by far, as Victor Newman on the long-running soap. He’s still doing the role, as he has been since 1980, and it’s made him an icon of daytime TV.

Despite the incredibly demanding nature of soap stardom (shows typically shoot upwards of 200 episodes per year), Braeden continues to pop up now and then in films and other TV shows.

His most recent bit of moonlighting was, indeed, a smallish supporting role in the 2018 action hit “Den of Thieves.”

Prior to that, his last non-”Y&R” role was a Season 4 episode of “How I Met Your Mother” in 2008. Earlier that year, he also appeared in an independently produced Western drama called “The Man Who Came Back.”

His biggest soap-free role came back in 1997, when he played real-life millionaire John Jacob Astor in “Titanic,” one of the biggest movies of all time.

Making its debut as part of Shudder’s 10-year anniversary — a celebration dubbed “Shudder10,” offering horror fans the streaming service’s “most terrifyingly ambitious slate to date,” per AMC Networks — the all-new unscripted competition series “Guts & Glory” makes its debut on Shudder and AMC+ this Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Hosted by Oscar-, BAFTA- and Emmy-winning special effects artist Greg Nicotero (“The Walking Dead”) — who boasts four decades of working in the industry, delivering groundbreaking practical effects for iconic directors such as Quentin Tarantino (“Pulp Fiction,” 1994), Sam Raimi (“The Evil Dead,” 1981) and Martin Scorsese (“Goodfellas,” 1990) — this series is said to “[flip] the script on the traditional competition show,” according to AMC’s synopsis, as it “blends the intensity of a horror film with the pressure of a survival game where contestants are confronted with their fears in various scenarios.”

As shown in the series trailer, “Guts & Glory” drops 10 eager competitors into the woods of Alabama, where these horrific games begin. Upon the discovery of a dead body (not a real one, of course), the group begins a terrifying journey that takes them through some of the most dreadful scenarios possible, as they face icy cold morgues, soon-to-be-filled coffins, skeletons, monsters and plenty of gore.

Nicotero himself describes the competition as “if ‘Survivor’ and ‘The Blair

Witch Project’ had a baby,” blending unscripted content with classic horror genre narratives and tropes.

“It’s one of the most creative and organic things I’ve ever done,” Nicotero continues, “creating FX that have to happen live in real time and capturing the honest reactions ... all the while fighting to see who the winner will be. To add to the mayhem, I also got to reunite many of the key crew members from The Walking Dead Universe to help bring this show to life.”

Also acting as one of the series’ executive producers, Nicotero works alongside Brian Witten (“Creepshow”) from Monster Agency Productions, Chris Wagner (“The Masked Singer”) from White Label, Andrew Molina (“Bates Motel: The Check Out,” 2017) from Salaryman and “The Walking Dead” producer Jeffrey F. January, as he brings our worst nightmares to life.

Ushering in the Halloween season, “Guts & Glory” makes its debut Tuesday, Oct. 14, on Shudder and AMC+.
