Casciaro attorney plans appeal Defense files documents claiming judicial bias, says prosecution failed to prove its case By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com

Mario Casciaro

WOODSTOCK – The defense attorney for a man convicted of murdering a missing Johnsburg teen said his client did not receive a fair trial and wants the judge to toss the conviction.

Man charged in bank heists

In court documents filed Tuesday on behalf of Mario Casciaro, defense attorney Brian Telander slammed McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather, who presided over Casciaro’s first-degree murder trial in April. It was the second time Casciaro, 29, was on trial for the death

of 17-year-old Brian Carrick, who last was seen Dec. 20, 2002. The first trial ended in a hung jury and the judge declared a mistrial. Legally, the court motion sets the stage for an appeal – any issues not raised would be considered waived at the appellate court level.

Telander previously has filed court documents requesting a new trial, but on Tuesday he submitted supplemental materials citing case law, and documented what he perceived as a bias on the part of the judge.

jbustos@shawmedia.com A Cary man has been charged with three counts of bank robbery in connection with incidents that took place over a 10-day period, the FBI said in a news release. Evan L. Hall, 26, of the 100 block of River Drive, allegedly robbed three TCF Bank branches in the span of 10 days, the FBI said. Hall is in federal custody pending his court appearance July 1. According to the complaint, Hall first robbed a TCF Bank branch at 1157 N. Eola Road in Aurora on June 2. Hall demanded money, and when offered a drawer of cash by a teller, Hall told the teller to hand him the money instead, the news release said. A witness said Hall then left the bank and entered a gray-colored Audi, according to the news release. Four days later, Hall allegedly robbed a TCF Bank branch at 1177 S. Main St. in Lombard. He again demanded money, threatened the teller and gestured to a firearm that he had in a sweatshirt pocket, the FBI said. On June 12, Hall demanded money at a TCF Bank at 1952 W. Galena Blvd. in Aurora, the FBI said. A short time later, police were able to apprehend Hall after they stopped a blue Audi near the bank. Hall was formally charged Monday when he appeared before a magistrate judge. If convicted, Hall could face up to 20 years in prison. The FBI did not disclose how much money was taken in the robberies.

Pets part of workday at some local businesses

By LAWERENCE SYNETT lsynett@shawmedia.com Bob loves to sit around the office all day and greet customers as they enter Precision Body Works in Crystal Lake. During his downtime, he drinks water, eats snacks and plays an occasional game with some co-workers and customers. He also can be found napping every once in a while. To some, Bob may sound lazy. To others, he’s a typical employee. But there is a glaring difference between Bob and the other staff at the auto repair shop – Bob is a dog. “Bob runs the place,” business owner Brett Kehl said. “Once he was in here, he became a great addition to the family. We call him the boss because everybody comes to see him.” The pooch is one of many across McHenry County working a 9-to-5 shift, a scenario that proves not only beneficial

SPRINGFIELD – Unable to overcome a stalemate on the state’s $97 billion pension crisis, Gov. Pat Quinn and legislative leaders are working on a new plan that involves forming a bipartisan committee this week and reconvening the Legislature for an additional session in July. Lawmakers are scheduled to convene Wednesday in Springfield for a special session called by Quinn to deal with the pension crisis. But Quinn’s spokeswoman, Gov. Pat Brooke Ander- Quinn son, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the governor will call another session in early July for the lawmakers to keep working on the problem. The announcement came after word that Madigan has warmed to the idea of a bipartisan committee to negotiate a compromise between two rival pension reform plans that have split the House and Senate. Madigan initially had opposed the committee idea, but Anderson said he, Quinn and Senate President John Cullerton had agreed on the new approach as it became clear that a resolution this week was unlikely. “It’s the first time they’ve agreed on a means to an end,” Anderson said.

BUDDYZ PIZZERIA GETS NEW OWNER

The Cary Village Board adopted a littering ordinance in town, which was put in place to help regulate how newspapers are distributed. The village had received complaints about unwanted news publications being left in front of houses. The new rules also regulate how handbills, or advertisements, are distributed.
