Celebration for those who love insects If you look at the world through Hallmark-tinted glasses, you might be tempted to believe February is the month of love.

Certainly if you venture into a supermarket or gift shop, the signs of Valentine’s Day are all around – even now, two days after we observed our annual tribute to the Saint of Love. (In fact, some frugal romantics I know insist this is the best time to celebrate, since all the Valentine merchandise is half-price.)

But there are those among us who view February in a completely different light.

Instead of rejoicing over romance and relationships, these folks gather each year to revel in the glory of the one group of animals that outnumbers all others on Earth: the class Insecta.

For the past 30 years, the Entomology Graduate Student Association at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign has hosted the Insect Fear Film Festival, an evening of feature-length and short films starring creepy crawlies of all kinds and sizes.

Despite its name, the event actually pays homage to all the good things insects, and in fact all arthropods, do for our planet ... despite filmmakers’ best efforts to make us believe otherwise.

As May Berenbaum, a UIUC entomology professor and department head, not to mention Insect Fear founder, explains, IFFF was created as a means to improve the public image of bugs and their kin. “Insects remain the one familiar and conspicuous group which is politically correct to hate,” she says on the EGSA website. “Probably for this reason, Hollywood has

Each year, EGSA students select a theme for the fest. Sometimes specific to a certain order (in 2008 it was Hymenoptera, and the films were “Bee Movie” and “Antz”), sometimes more general in nature (2010, the last year I attended, the theme was Prehistoric Insects), the event always includes a student art contest as well as a number of interactive displays and exhibits, and the ever-popular Insect Petting Zoo. (Thinking it’s been a while since you touched a tarantula or let a cockroach scurry over your fingers?

Here’s your chance to interact with these creatures, and more.)

The theme for this year’s fest is The Ins-X Files: The Truth (about insects) is out there. Besides an insectthemed episode of television’s drama “The X-Files,” the evening also will feature the “X-Files” movie “Fight the Future” and not one but two 30-minute Q-and-A sessions with “X-Files” creator Chris Carter.

This weekend, bird is the word Watchers sought for annual count

he activity of filling feeders and watching birds will take on a scientific meaning through Monday, as thousands of people across the country will count and report birds for the 16th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count.

Sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon, the event seeks birdwatchers – experienced and novices – of all ages to report their findings. St. Charles resident Jerry Hope, a member of Kane County Audubon, will be one of the backyard bird counters.

“I would say this is a premier citizen scientist activity because the collection of data is used to measure bird population shifts,” Hope said.

“It gives a lot of data from all over, across the whole nation, and you can measure a trend.”

Kane County Audubon members will show participants how to count and record their findings from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, St. Charles. Though the bird count already will have begun, novices can learn what data is being sought and how to report their findings of species and numbers and participate that day and Monday.

Volunteers who report backyard bird counts can spend as little as 15 minutes on one day or count for as long as they want over the four days of the project, according to the Great Backyard Bird County website, www.birdsource.org.

Last year, volunteers provided 17.4 million individual bird observations to ornithologists, scientists who study birds, according to the website’s data.

The Illinois State Board of Education plans to get feedback on leadership, collaboration, family involvement, instruction and the school environment through a new online survey intended for teachers, students and parents.

“As educators, we have long understood that test scores alone do not represent the full scope of school life and learning,” State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch said in a news release.

“The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will finally help us paint that fuller picture of learning conditions and guide local and state improvement initiatives so that every student has access to a worldclass education.”

Legislation passed in 2011 required the survey be implemented this school year. It is paid for by federal Race to the Top funds. Almost 150,000 people have completed the survey since it launched Feb. 1, according to the ISBE. Feedback will be accepted through March 31. Participation is voluntary, but a certain level of participation – 50 percent of students and teachers and 30 percent of parents – is needed for a school to get a report.

Gov. Pat Quinn proclaimed Friday as 5Essentials Day in Illinois and encouraged participation in the 15-minute survey.

“The Illinois 5Essentials Survey allows those on the front lines to have a voice, giving decision-makers greater insight into how we can strengthen our schools and make sure Illinois has one of the best education systems in the country,” Quinn said in a news release.

Geneva also saw a surge in foreclosures in January, as new foreclosures jumped from 12 in 2012 to 22 last month.

But foreclosure activity ebbed in Batavia, dropping to 18 in January from 27 in the same month last year.

TheJanuarynumbersmark a continuation of foreclosure activity observed throughout much of 2012, as the number of foreclosures in the region surged by about 40 percent in 2012, compared to 2011.

Many foreclosed properties continue to find new owners, however, as so-called distressed properties – those sold under foreclosure or as a short sale – account for about a third of all homes sold in the Tri-Cities and nearby communities, according to home sale data supplied by the MainStreet Organization of Realtors.

About one in every 182 homes in Kane County received a foreclosure filing in January, according to RealtyTrac.

A large number of homes continued to move through the foreclosure process in the Tri-Cities and nearby communities.

According to the latest data supplied by foreclosure tracking company RealtyTrac, home foreclosure activity remained high locally in January.

RealtyTrac’s data indicated that 223 homes were at some stage of the foreclosure process last month in a nineZIP code area that includes St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Elburn, North Aurora, Sugar Grove, Maple Park and much of Campton Hills.

Last month’s numbers marked a 16 percent increase in local foreclosure activity, compared to January 2012. At that time, 192 homes in that region were moving through foreclosure, RealtyTrac said.

The total number of homes moving through the foreclosure process within that region matched exactly the 223 homes undergoing foreclosure in January 2011, according to RealtyTrac.

Within the ZIP codes for the Tri-Cities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, last month’s foreclosure number was unchanged from January 2012. In both months, the three communities logged 101 new foreclosures, down from the 146 foreclosures in the TriCities in January 2011.

Campton Hills seeking to hire administrator

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills village trustees earlier this week passed an ordinance to open up a village administrator position and now are in the process of making room in their 2014 internal budget.

Village President Patsy Smith said it would be the first time the village would have its own administrator, adding that t h o s e d u t i e s Village h a v e l a r g e l y President fallen on her in Patsy Smith the nearly six years since the village has been incorporated.

“We’ve never had it because I’ve always done the position voluntarily,” she said.

“It’s been a lot of work. It’s not easy to get a village up and running.”

She said there wasn’t enough space in the former village hall to hire a village administrator, but that’s changed since village hall offices were moved to a larger building last summer.

The finance committee has gotten direction from the board to make room in the 2014

internal budget. Smith said the budget is up for approval in April, and a new village administrator could be hired as soon as June of this year.

Smith makes $18,000 as village president, and she also is compensated $1,000 to be the village’s liquor commissioner. Outside of volunteering as the village administrator, she said she also volunteers to oversee certain financial functions, human resources, grant management and the village’s municipal aggregation program.

Those duties have many times carried over into nights and weekends, she said.

“Building a village from scratch is more than a fulltime job, especially if you have no municipal property tax,” she said.

Smith said with such a small staff, the village wouldn’t be where it is today without the help of volunteers.

She said the village’s budget has been in the black since the village was incorporated in 2007, and with a healthy reserve fund, she said this is a good time to find room in the budget for a village administrator.

“There’s just a lot to be done, and I’m looking forward to having help,” she said.

ST. CHARLES – Fredric C. Owens, 68, of St. Charles, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, surrounded by family.

He was born April 17, 1944, in Cortland, N.Y., the son of Harry and Beverly (Lucas) Owens.

Fredric served his country with the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War, during which he served on the USS Rehoboth. Fredric was very active with the VFW and was a past post commander of the Batavia VFW. He also enjoyed bowling and fishing in his free time.

Fredric worked as a specialist mold maker for local manufacturers.

Throughout his life, Fredric found joy in spending time with his family and friends, and will be greatly missed.

The couple last year opened Woof Beach K9 Spa and Training at 1840 Mill St. in Batavia.

Lotto tickets, cigarettes stolen in armed robbery KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – North Aurora police are looking for an armed robber who got away with an unknown quantity of lottery scratch-off tickets and several cartons of cigarettes Thursday morning from the 7-Eleven store at 718 Butterfield Road.

At about 5:15 a.m., a man wearing a mask entered the store and pointed a small black gun at the store’s clerk, according to police. The man demanded cash from the register and the clerk complied, giving him an undetermined amount of cash.

The man also took an unknown quantity of lottery scratch-off tickets and several cartons of cigarettes before he left the store, police said. Police were not able to locate the

robber.

The robber has been described as a black man about 6 feet tall and lean, wearing a black and white shirt, black gloves and a black mask. He was armed with what appeared to be a black semi-automatic gun, police said.

Investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who might have seen the man before the robbery or who may have seen him fleeing the scene. Those with information can call the department’s Investigations Division at 630897-8705, ext. 610. Anonymous tips may be left by choosing option 3.

The village’s last armed robbery occurred in December, when a female employee was robbed outside of the 7-Eleven store at 2 S. Lincolnway as she was transporting store money to the bank.

Contract to add horns at crossings gets preliminary OK

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s government has taken another step toward making Mill Creek and LaFox quieter places to live.

Friday, the Kane County Board’s Transportation Committee recommended approval of a contract with an engineering company to perform final design work on plans to install so-called wayside horns at two railroad

crossings in LaFox, near Mill Creek.

The $63,000 contract would be awarded to Hanson Professional Services, of Oak Brook, to oversee the final phases of engineering work for the project. The cost would be paid from a state grant, said Tom Rickert, deputy director at the Kane County Division of Transportation.

by Kane County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, who now chairs the trans-

portation committee, have sought to complete the LaFox train horn project for years.

Frasz said residents of LaFox and Mill Creek have complained for years to him and other officials about the noise produced by the dozens of trains rolling through LaFox daily on the Union Pacific Railroad line.

By law, locomotive engineers are required to blow the horns as they approach each rail crossing. But the noise produced by the horns travels

far beyond the rail crossing, disturbing those living near the tracks and those miles away at all hours of the day.

To reduce the noise, Frasz and county transportation officials seized on the idea of the wayside horns. The automated devices work by blasting a noise similar to locomotive horns, but aiming it directly at vehicles and pedestrians at the rail crossing, greatly limiting the range at which the horns are heard.

Such wayside horns have been installed locally at Union Pacific rail crossings in Elburn and DeKalb, producing

the results desired.

Under the project now proposed, the county would install the horns at the Union Pacific rail crossings at LaFox Road and at Brundige Road, near those roads’ intersections with Keslinger Road.

Rickert said the wayside horns could be installed in early 2014.

“We’re trying to move as fast as we can on this,” he said.

The cost of the construction would be funded through $250,000 in grants and appropriations for the project from the state, Frasz said.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Activist to speak on peace, politics in Israel

BATAVIA – A car crash that took place Friday evening at Randall Road and McKee Street is under investigation by the Batavia Police Department, according to a news release issued by the department.

The crash happened at 6:22 p.m. at the intersection, the release stated, and two vehicles were involved. One vehicle was occupied by two people, who were treated and released at the scene. The other was occupied only by the driver, who was taken to a local hospital.

The names of those involved were not released Friday night, pending notification of family members.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No further details were available as of press time.

Lawmakers can lead by example While it amounts to just a tiny drop into a very deep bucket, we have to commend Illinois lawmakers who are giving up their state pension.

Members of the General Assembly can participate in the state-subsidized pension system, which allows lawmakers to contribute 11.5 percent of their salary. Depending on length of service, those contributions can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in pension payments.

About two dozen General Assembly members have said they are forgoing participation in the state’s pension system. That includes state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-South Elgin.

We know McConnaughay already has a public pension from her 20 years in elected office in Kane County. But given the dismal reality of the state’s fiscal situation, it’s the type of symbolic gesture lawmakers need to consider.

There are 177 members of the General Assembly.

And hundreds more no longer in office are collecting pensions too. We get that they paid into the system, and don’t deny everyone deserves a way to retire.

But we’re talking about the people who have the state’s 12.8 million residents on the hook for decades of fiscal mismanagement, which have resulted in a nearly $100 billion unfunded pension liability and at least $8 billion in unpaid bills.

If lawmakers ever actually craft a solution to the financial quagmire, it’s going to require sacrifice by taxpayers.

Lawmakers have a rare opportunity to lead by example and start moving the state in the right direction by sharing in that burden.

Searching for scholarships worth the effort The idea of paying four or more years of a college education for a child is daunting.

A year of tuition, room and board at a state college costs on average $13,600 per year. It’s more than $60,000 annually at private schools such as Northwestern and the University of Chicago.

And there’s no promise, in today’s fragile economy, that a job is waiting once your child has a diploma in hand.

Don’t view those sobering facts as reasons why your child shouldn’t pursue a higher education.

Instead, parents should take an active role in encouraging their sons and daughters to apply for scholarships to make attaining that higher education goal a little easier on the pocketbook.

Crunch numbers and see how much it will cost to put your child through college. While students should be encouraged to aim for

their dream schools, make sure they are considering the often more affordable community college options too.

Get your taxes done early so you can get a Free Application for Federal Student Aid in, which will tell you how much the government and schools can offer.

There’s no lack of available scholarships for students to pursue.

We encourage local high school counselors to help students by being as communicative as possible with families so they are aware of all the opportunities that await them.

The researching of and applying for scholarships will take time – but the return could be monumental.

Operation Finally Home Illinois and the Northern Illinois Home Builders Association are working to build a home for the veteran this year.

And the City of St. Charles plans to provide the land for the project. Tuesday, the City Council is expected to approve proceeding with the transfer of property south of Park Avenue just west of Route 25 to

John Hall Jr., of St. Charlesbased John Hall Homes, said the city’s contribution means a lot.

“To me, it’s basically everything,” he said.

Hall has been working on the project since 2010, when he and his brother were ap-

proached about the subject, he said. He said he and his subcontractors were excited about the opportunity.

“It’s been a process that has been embraced by a lot of home builders in the country,” Hall said, adding Operation Finally Home began in Texas.

According to its website, Operation Finally Home has built, is building or has plans to build houses in Texas, Kansas, Montana, Tennessee, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, North Carolina and New York.

The homes go to wounded and disabled veterans as well

as widows of the fallen, according to the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization.

“We just all feel the same, that we need to reward our heroes,” Hall said. “And that’s why we’re doing it.”

The city’s Planning and Development Committee initially backed Hall’s request for a land transfer in July 2010. It reaffirmed its commitment Monday.

City planner Matthew O’Rourke said the group of city-owned properties south of Park Avenue between Third and Fifth avenues had once been used for public works facilities but is now under-

used.

The parcels can be combined to create two lots, O’Rourke said.

Hall expects site improvements will begin this spring with construction to follow, he said. The house will be designed with the veteran’s needs in mind, he said, noting the veteran’s name will be released in an official announcement.

Candidates for the homes apply directly to Operation Finally Home, which works with the Department of Defense and military hospitals to approve the veterans, Hall said.

I’d like to speak to the idea that Gov. Pat Quinn is going to try raising the minimum wage in Illinois, from $8.25 to $10.

There are things that you can do. Everything is going to cost you more. If that goes through, there would be fewer jobs for young people and unskilled labor. And you’re also going to have higher costs at the grocery store, at the restaurant, at Menard’s, at Home Depot, every store that you go to. If you go to the movies, it’s going to cost you more for the movie tickets, for the popcorn, for the pop and the candy. Everything is going to cost you more.

So contact Gov. Quinn. You can call his office in Springfield, at 217-782-0244, and I also suggest that you go to his website and email him and tell him not to raise the minimum wage. It is a job killer, and it will raise costs for everybody in the State of Illinois.

Remember when your bill at the grocery store and the tab at the restaurant is higher, you’ll have to pay the higher tax that he already has put into place.

It’s going to hurt all the young people trying to work their way through college, junior college or local schools. They’re not going to get a job.

Title within grasp Marmion’s Jimenez, Fisher, Knights’ Goress in title matches

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – Unfazed by a jump from Class 2A to 3A and another daunting schedule that takes their team across the midwest, Marmion wrestlers Johnny Jimenez and George Fisher encountered one more potential roadblock Friday.

Both St. Charles athletes will compete for state titles at the University of Illinois’ Assembly Hall tonight, but that’s well-traveled ground for Jimenez (120 pounds) and Fisher (132).

What isn’t so familiar is the match order. In a bid to avoid sparse crowds for the heavier finals bouts, the IHSA opted for a random draw. Finals will begin at 170 instead of 106, ostensibly lengthening the Cadets’ wait.

Jimenez (47-2) and Fisher (46-4) collectively shrugged off the change, much as they have most opponents during stellar seasons.

“To be honest, I’m there. I don’t care what weight they’re starting at,” said Fisher, a Michigan-bound senior. “I’m going to be out there, and whoever’s wrestling me, they have to wrestle me. Doesn’t matter if I’m the first match or the last match.”

Kaneland senior Dan Goress, 40-3 at 145 pounds, will get the latest mat call among Chronicle-area finalists.

Competing in 2A, Goress wasn’t particularly bothered by the move, either. It simply gives him more time to visualize what he long has aspired to: the state finals.

“It’s every kid’s dream,” Goress said. “I got mine by pure hard work. Nothing but hard work. Every day, I went into the room wanting to be a state champion.”

Per usual, he credits the Cadets’ challenging regular season, both in the mat room and out.

“The state tournament is not even the hardest tournament we’ve been to,” Jimenez said. “If you’ve seen our schedule, we’re out in Ohio, the Ironman. Cheesehead. Dvorak. It’s such a tough schedule that we’ve been ready for it.”

Vela was the lone athlete to advance to Saturday among St. Charles East’s four

state qualifiers, and will face Johnny Gosinski of Glenbard North in a wrestleback quarterfinal.

After missing much of his sophomore season due to injury, Vela is aiming to improve upon his 2011 debut, when he placed fourth at 119.

Vela reached Friday’s championship quarterfinal with a second-period fall in Thursday’s prelims, but was unable to get much leverage against Fisher, who pulled away for a 3-0 decision after a scoreless first period.

Elsewhere in 3A, seniors Brad Martens (Geneva, 120) and Wes Pasholk (St. Charles North, 220) suffered elimination upon losing their opening wrestleback matches after preliminary defeats.

Pasholk lost, 3-1, in overtime against Luke Roth of Naperville Central, who edged Pasholk, 2-1, earlier this season on a stalling call.

“It was just exciting. An exciting experience. I thought I was in it, but he’s a tough

kid, so props to him,” Pasholk said. “He beat me fair and square. … He’s a tough kid, good wrestler. I hope he goes far.”

For every wrestler still in the draw, the wait will be over by tonight. It might take longer than some athletes expected, but at this point in the season, preparation influences matches more than protocol.

“I always know when to start the warm-up, you know,” Jimenez said. “I’ll sit down, kind of clear my mind, then get ready mentally. Once it gets about three, four, five weights away, I’ll start to get my work in.”

You’re still alive to place in a loaded bracket. How do you feel about where you are?

I had a tough loss in the quarterfinals but I’m just focused on my next match [today] and hopefully getting that first win. … Me and coach [Jason Potter] talked about who my opponents are and stuff, they’re pretty tough, but we’ve got to keep focus on [today] and winning that first match.

What was the difference in the Fisher match?

He took me down, got a 3-0 lead. I couldn’t get out, get off my back, and that was pretty much the match. … It was 0-0 after the first and then at the

We had four qualifiers, and the other three got out, unfortunately. I’ve got a couple partners here, helping me do what I’ve got to do to stay in shape.

Huff Hall, where the Illini wrestlers compete, is open to the high school wrestlers this weekend. Is that a nice luxury?

Vela followed with a 6-2 victory against Barrington’s Kevin Conrad to remain in the consolation bracket.

“Having to wrestle back at state, it feels like it’s been awhile,” Vela said. “But I’m just ready to wrestle [today] and hopefully fight back for third. I’m just excited for [today].”

Vela’s cheering section will include teammates Ryan Rubino (106), Keone Derain (145) and Brad Kearbey (160), who were eliminated Friday. Like Kaneland senior 132-pounder Esai Ponce in 2A, Kearbey followed the most passive path out of the tournament, falling victim to the “follow the leader” rule when the opponent who defeated him in prelims lost in the quarterfinals.

In another tight bout between East and Marmion, Rubino absorbed a 6-4 overtime decision against Bosco, who scored late in the overtime just as Rubino had moved into position to get behind Bosco, a St. Charles resident.

Derain, a sophomore and the youngest of the Saints’ state contingent – Kearbey and Rubino are seniors – fell, 1-0, to Justin Maslow of Hinsdale South, closing the gap from a match earlier this winter.

Two years later, the Saints junior is in position to place third, as he prepares for today’s wrestleback quarterfinal against Johnny Gosinski of Glenbard North.

After winning Thursday’s preliminary match at the University of Illinois’ Assembly Hall, Vela lost a 3-0 decision to Marmion senior George Fisher in Friday’s quarterfinals, then rallied to beat Kevin Conrad of Barrington, 6-2, in his first wrestleback match.

GENEVA – The St. Charles North boys basketball team has encountered mixed results protecting late leads this season, but the North Stars aren’t about to turn wide-eyed when they see a lead shrinking.

North went more than six minutes into the fourth quarter without scoring and saw its 11-point lead dwindle to two, but the North Stars made eight straight free throws to replenish their advantage and hang on Friday for a 5350 Upstate Eight Conference River win against Geneva.

Senior point guard Tony Neari made four of those free throws, including North’s first points of the quarter for a 47-43 lead with 1:58 left in the game.

“I think we’re improving on holding a lead,” Neari said. “Even though we didn’t score in that six-minute stretch, we still killed a lot of clock which made it even harder for them, even when they were making their run, to keep it going and cut our deficit even more.”

With the win, North (168 overall) capped its UEC River schedule with an 8-4 conference mark and ended in a tie for second place with St. Charles East, which was upset by Elgin on Friday.

Geneva (18-8, 6-6 UEC River) finished fourth in the conference, with all three teams trailing UEC River champion Larkin.

The North Stars also avenged a listless, 51-40 home loss to Geneva in December.

“We didn’t play well at all that first game, we had no energy, but today we came out and we knew they were going to come out and play as hard as they could because it was their senior night, so that was our big thing,” North senior Quinten Payne said.

“We didn’t want to be beat on our senior night and we knew that they didn’t want to either, so they were going to come out with tons of energy.”

Navigato scored four straight points to bring Geneva within 45-43 with 2:33 left, but the North Stars tightened their ball-handling late and were effective enough from the free-throw line to send Gene-

va to its fifth conference loss in seven games after starting 4-1 in River play.

“I told the kids, it wasn’t what happened in the fourth quarter that led to this loss, it was possessions in the first half where we couldn’t seem to get the ball over half court, or get us into an offense, things of that nature that really kind of made the difference,” Ralston said.

Both teams had plenty of scoring balance.

Junior guard Alec Goetz scored 11 points and senior forward Kyle Swanson and Payne each added 10 for the North Stars, while Navigato (12) and Chapman (11) paced the Vikings.

Neither coach was immediately certain who the opposition would be Thursday in the regular season-ending UEC crossover matchup that is determined by conference standings. The North Stars also have a rare Sunday game on the slate against Niles Notre Dame this weekend at Gordon Tech.

The North Stars have won five games in a row.

“It’s very nice, but we still want to make that run in the postseason,” Neari said.

“That’s the most important run for us right now.”

Williams, Elgin burn St. Charles East on senior night

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Eleven players took the court for the St. Charles East boys basketball team Friday and – unfortunately for the Saints – none of them really had an answer for slowing down Elgin’s Arie Williams.

The 5-foot-9 senior guard burned East for 35 points to help the Maroons (13-13, 3-9 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) edge the Saints on senior night, 70-67.

“It was nice to pull one out,” Williams said. “We’ve been struggling down the stretch [of games] all year, so to pull this one out on the road and kind of spoil their senior night like St. Charles North spoiled ours was pretty nice.”

East (15-9, 8-4) simply did not have anyone who could handle guarding Williams one-on-one.

“Arie Williams is a heck of a player,” East coach Pat Woods said. “We tried a lot of different things. Credit him, man. He killed us.”

Williams was accurate from the field, hitting on 86 percent of his shots, including six shots from beyond the 3-point line. When the Saints tried to pressure him outside, however, he used his quickness to get to the hoop for easy layups.

East’s best defense against Williams may have been not to guard him at all. He was just 5 for 10 from the freethrow line.

“Maybe that’s the defense if we see him again in regionals,” Woods joked. “We’ll foul

him every time.”

Williams missed a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in the game that gave the Saints one last chance to avoid defeat, but Elgin came out in an extended 1-2-2 zone defense designed to challenge any 3-point attempts and Dom Adduci’s long attempt at the buzzer over a taller defender was off the mark.

“When they came out in that zone it kind of caught us off guard,” East senior Ben Skoog said. “The plan was to get it into Cole [Gentry’s] hands and for Cole to make a move for Jake [Asquini] because Jake was hot tonight.”

Asquini was just as torrid shooting from 3-point range as Williams. The 6-1 sophomore scored 21 points, all from beyond the arc.

His last trey tied the game

at 65 with 2:40 left on the clock, forcing the Maroons to finally put Williams on him defensively.

“He made that switch himself,” Elgin coach Mike Sitter said. “He said, ‘I’ll take [No.] 33,’ because he was torching everybody else. He stepped up and wanted to guard their best shooter late in the game and he did a nice job taking away what they wanted to do.”

The Saints put an all-senior starting lineup on the floor and they did a good job early. East got a pair of tip-in baskets from Jimmy Liss and Tyler Windau and a 3-pointer from Joren Wilson to jump out to a 7-3 lead, but then Williams started heating up.

He hit a trio of 3-pointers in quick succession and wound up scoring 16 points

in the first quarter to boost Elgin to a 19-12 lead and the Saints would spend much of the night trying to dig out of similar-sized holes.

“We were a little out of sync for a good part of the night,” Woods said. “We had a little trouble rotating defensively.

We didn’t shoot terrible from the field. We didn’t get to the free-throw line enough, so we weren’t attacking the basket.

I thought we did a decent job on the boards.”

Skoog had nine rebounds to go along with seven points.

Gentry was one of the few Saints to successfully attack the basket, scoring 18 points.

Senior Ethan Griffiths added six points.

Junior Isaiah Butler had a strong game for Elgin, scoring 17 points to help take some of the pressure off Williams.

MORRIS – The Kaneland boys basketball team could not build off its blazing start and suffered a 50-46 loss to Morris on Friday.

The Knights deflated an energized Morris student section by jumping out to a 12-3 lead. The Knights hit five of their first six shots from the floor, including a pair from junior point guard Drew David, the second of which forced a Morris timeout with 2:14 to play in the first quarter.

David would finish the game with a team-high 12 points.

Despite getting outrebounded, 10-2, in the first half and turning the ball over nine times, the Redskins finished the half trailing 27-18. The Knights did turn the ball over nine times, as well, but it felt like a lost opportunity for Kaneland coach Brian Johnson.

“I was happy with what we did in the first half, but the second quarter worried me a little bit because they started making some 3s, and the goal was to force them to drive,” Johnson said.

The Redskins notched their 15th win of the season in style on senior night against the Northern Illinois Big 12 East-leading Knights. And with Ben Ortiz, Morris’ leading scorer,

and Morris tied the score at 38 going into the fourth quarter.

“I thought us attacking the basket opened up some perimeter shots, and then once we started hitting perimeter shots they started face-guarding and that opened the lanes back up,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “I thought that ability to score inside and outside was the difference.”

Ned Kneller played a role in Morris’ second-half surge, grabbing nine rebounds in the final two quarters after the Redskins had just two as a team in the first half.

“We needed somebody inside to pull down rebounds in the second half, and he was phenomenal,” Blumberg said of Kneller.

Meanwhile, the Knights struggled to pull within two possessions the majority of the final quarter until a bucket by junior forward John Pruett pulled Kaneland to within two with 1:03 to play. However, Morris ran the clock down and made free throws down the stretch.

David drilled a long 3-pointer with just five seconds to play that cut the lead to 50-48 with five seconds to play, but Morris successfully inbounded the ball forcing Kaneland to foul.

With Morris in the double-bonus, Jason Matteson hit both free throws to seal the victory.

The Rockets fended off a Plano second-half rally for a 38-34 win Friday in the IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional title game for the program’s first regional crown in 23 years.

“I’m going to feel great, really accomplished,” the Rockets’ Alison Colby said about adding this year’s regional title to the banner.

“I’ve been waiting for this a long time.”

The underclassmen-dominated Rockets will face Marian Central on Tuesday in the second semifinal of the 3A Genoa-Kingston Sectional.

A perfect 9 for 9 from the free-throw line and a strong fourth-quarter defense that gave up only two baskets preserved the Rockets’ win.

“A gritty grind it [game], especially the fourth quarter,” Rockets coach Mark Smith said. “A great effort by the girls all night long.”

The Reapers’ defense shut down the Rockets’ inside game, forcing them to make outside shots that weren’t falling.

Central only managed two points in the third quarter, both on free throws.

Martinez, who led all scorers with 18 points, finally was getting the ball inside and sank three baskets in a row from underneath during the third quarter.

Theisen’s 11 first-quarter points put ACC (13-12, 5-5) in a 22-9 first-quarter hole that they never recovered from.

The Chargers cut the lead to 10 points on two occasions late in the second quarter but never were able to get closer.

ACC coach Nate Drye wasn’t pleased with much of anything in the loss.

“I know we weren’t ready to play tonight. We were pretty much bad in every way, shape and form,” Drye said. “We played bad, we shot it bad, we passed it bad, we guarded it bad, we coached it bad and it’s probably going to have a bad bus ride, too.”

Marmion came out firing from the start as the Cadets’ started the first quarter on a 12-2 run. Theisen hit three 3s in the run as the Cadets’ were patient with ACC’s 2-3 zone defense.

“Alex made a couple of shots there to start the game and this is the most patient we’ve been in a long, long time,” Paradise said. “We didn’t turn the ball over and made great decisions.”

Glasgow added 14 points for the Cadets, who kept ACC big-man Phil Schuetz to eight points, which led the Chargers.

Geneva’s Puff qualifies for finals in floor exercise KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE PALATINE – Geneva senior Ashley Puff was not quite at full strength, but she was good enough.

Puff, who had battled strep throat this week, qualified for the finals in floor exercise at the IHSA girls gymnastics state meet Friday at Palatine High School. Puff scored 9.375 in floor to make the 10-competitor individual finals, which start at 5:45 p.m. today.

“Practices were tough because I didn’t have the usual endurance,” Puff said. “Each day I got a little stronger. I’m still not as well as normal, but I went out and did my best.”

Puff enjoyed competing one last time with her teammates on the state’s biggest stage.

“I’m really happy I could finish off my last season in a great way,” Puff said. “It’s a great way to end the season with my team.”

Puff was in 20th place in the all-around

while teammate Dominique Brognia was in 15th.

Geneva was the seventh of eight teams to qualify for state, but is in fifth place with 145.225 points.

“I’m very excited and proud for the girls,” Vikings coach Kim Hostman said. “They worked very hard for this. Our goal was to get to 145 and we’re right there. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

The St. Charles co-op is in eighth place with a score of 141.675.

AURORA – The Marmion basketball team can only hope its encore performance against rival Aurora Central Catholic goes as it did Friday night.

With 10 days until the rivals meet at the IHSA Class 3A IMSA Regional, Marmion blew away its biggest rival, 60-36, to split the season series in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division matchup.

Marmion coach Ryan Paradise is tempering enthusiasm for the Cadets’ win with the playoff matchup right around the corner.

“I don’t really know how much this means other than them wanting to get us back,” Paradise said. “It was kind of a dress rehearsal in that it’s a rivalry game and everyone’s up for it but I don’t know if anyone is going to take too much out of this when it’s playoff time.”

An abysmal fourth quarter sunk what was already a tough night for ACC. The Chargers failed to score in the fourth until Brad Searles hit a 3 with 25 seconds to go.

By that point, the game had well been decided as the Cadets (10-16, 4-6) blew open a 12-point third quarter lead with a dominating defensive effort in the fourth quarter.

As he did at the start of the first quarter, Marmion senior Alex Theisen started the fourth quarter with two 3-pointers that opened up a 5133 Cadets’ lead. Jordan Glasgow then knocked down a pair of elbow jumpers on consecutive possessions and the rout was on.

Theisen finished with 19 points, including five 3-pointers in the win.

“We just needed a turnaround; I didn’t want to lose today, especially after losing to them last time,” Theisen said. “We were looking to get the ball in the middle so we could break up their defense.

Mooseheart relies on defense during streak As the season approached, Mooseheart boys basketball coach Ron Ahrens projected he had a defensive juggernaut on his hands but also a team that was deficient when it came to executing halfcourt offense.

Twenty-six games later, Ahrens hasn’t seen anything to change his mind.

Mooseheart, in pursuit of what Ahrens believes would be the program’s first regional championship in school history, opens the IHSA Class 1A Westminster Christian Regional on Tuesday against Faith Lutheran. The second-seeded Red Ramblers will be heavily favored to win their first two regionals games, which would likely set up a regional championship showdown Friday against top-seeded Hinckley-Big Rock.

Mooseheart (21-5), led by the towering South Sudanese trio of Makur Puou, Mangisto Deng and Akim Nyang, enters the postseason on a

12-game winning streak.

Here’s an even more impressive streak: The Ramblers have not allowed an opponent to score 50 or more points since a Dec. 8 loss to prep school powerhouse La Lumiere (Ind.), a span of 19 games.

With the size provided by junior transfers Nyang (7foot-1), Puou (6-10) and Deng (6-7), and plenty of athleticism in the backcourt, it’s no surprise teams struggle to get comfortable against Mooseheart. Ahrens estimated that 75 percent of the team’s scoring comes from defense quickly turning in to offense, but he still is waiting on the Ramblers to play smoother basketball at the offensive end.

He knows he might grow old waiting.

“We still struggle offensively,” Ahrens said. “I’ve kind of come down to the conclusion of we’re not a very good passing team. We throw the ball instead of

Going hand-in-hand with that concern is the team’s overall guardplay. Deng plays point guard for the Ramblers out of necessity but would be best suited as an off-guard, Ahrens said. Sophomore Hameed Odunewu has emerged late in the season as a substantial piece of the backcourt rotation, but how the Ramblers handle pressure situations from a ball-handling and passing standpoint is the milliondollar question entering the postseason.

A flurry of late turnovers cost Mooseheart the game when the Ramblers faced Hinckley-Big Rock on Dec. 5 with a 58-51 loss in Hinckley.

“That’s probably the most concerning part of our team,” Ahrens said. “I think I’ve said from the beginning, we’re going to go as far as our guards can take us.”

Provided Mooseheart handles seventh-seeded Faith Lutheran on Tuesday, the Ramblers would likely need to beat Westminster Christian – a team the Ramblers have handily defeated twice this season – on Wednesday to create a widely anticipated rematch with H-BR. Puou (19.2 ppg, 10.9 rpg) and Deng (14.3 ppg) have blossomed into the top weapons for a Mooseheart team with virtually no substantial postseason experience.

Berry receives scholarship offer: St. Francis freshman quarterback Justin Berry received his first Division I scholarship offer Thursday from Temple, his father Shaon Berry said.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Berry is a dual-threat quarterback who also is receiving

college interest from Indiana, Purdue and Arizona State, his father said. Temple’s football program joined the Big East Conference for the 2012 season.

Berry was ticketed for St. Charles East before deciding last summer to attend St. Francis. He hopes to challenge for varsity playing time as a sophomore next season.

Kaneland pitcher commits: Kaneland senior pitcher Blake Sowell has made a college commitment to attend Clarke University, an NAIA program located in Dubuque, Iowa.

Sowell, of Elburn, signed a letter of intent to play for the Crusaders in a ceremony with his family and Knights baseball coach Brian Aversa on Thursday.

MESA, Ariz. – The Cubs got their first look at Jorge Soler during Friday’s batting practice at Fitch Park and manager Dale Sveum came away impressed.

“He kind of reminds me of a right-handed Cliff Floyd the way he takes [batting practice],” Sveum said. “He backspins balls pretty good. … The ball comes off his bat like you want a ball to come off a bat if you’re a manager.

I’m really, really interested to watch him on the field.”

Sveum said there’s no reason to put him on a fast track to the big leagues.

However, Soler said, through a translator, he expects to play with the Cubs next year. Soler, 20, will likely start the season at SingleA Kane County.

“Guys like him, they haven’t played that much baseball,” Sveum said. “He’s still got to play and learn so much, and face better pitching on a consistent basis … that experience factor comes in handy.”

Carlos Villanueva needed help translating scouting reports.

“I didn’t understand what they wanted me to do,” Villanueva said. “But now having my own routine, having my own way of viewing the game and viewing a game plan and completing a game plan is the difference now.”

Villanueva said he’s prepared to pitch 200 innings this season if given the opportunity to start – despite his career-high innings pitched (125 1⁄ 3) coming only last season – or hit 100 innings if put in the bullpen. While he’d prefer to get a shot at starting, he just wants to help the Cubs win.

“Selfishly, we all have our own goals,” Villanueva said. “But in the end, it really matters have we do as a team and where I can be to help out the most.”

Sveum said Villanueva has completely changed his work ethic since their time together in Milwaukee.

Sveum praised his durability and credited the righthander for learning how to better prepare, noting that Villanueva is in remarkably better shape.

When illness lingers, Dr. Mom comes to the rescue After 14-and-a-half years of playing Dr. Mom, my prognosticating skills are top-notch.

You see, I’ve gotten pretty good at reading the signs. For example, last month things looked grim when Noah complained that his throat was super-sore and his body hurt. He felt so miserable and weak, in fact, that he let me spoon-feed chicken broth to him without even batting an eyelash.

That he had the flu was undeniable.

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the chance to give my tough high-schooler a little extra TLC, but it was hard to watch.

He said his skin hurt, for Pete’s sake.

I knew he was really sick because he didn’t dribble his soccer ball or even play on his Xbox, for nearly a week. The day he did, I knew he’d turned a corner.

Those were signs. Off to soccer practice he went, the first chance he got. I had a hunch it was a tad premature for a full practice (I felt he needed another day to regain his strength), but he had a ton of energy and was determined to try.

I agreed to let him.

I resisted the urge to say “I told you so.” Because, while it may be frustrating and hard to watch, learning about the body’s limits – an important lifelesson – is not bad while you still have Dr. Mom around to help you deal with the consequences of your choices.

The hassle of icing his ankle and maneuvering through a huge school on crutches was a drag for Noah, but I knew he’d recovered the day my stainless steel kitchen recycling bin suffered a fresh ding, compliments of a solid kick of his soccer ball. Dang, that sign was incontrovertible. We were both ready for him to return to soccer practice, this time.

As for my daughter, the signs of her wellness really crack me up. For example, earlier this week she com-

plained that her throat was sore, it hurt to swallow and her uvula was swollen (sorry, but I always feel like I’m saying something dirty when I say that word).

By golly, it really was red and puffy (as were her lymph nodes), so I figured she was fighting something and needed time to chill.

I knew she was on the mend, though, when she dispensed treats to our big red dog via a sling-shot she made in third grade and slapped her slap-on watch onto his paw over and over again while he laid on the floor, helpless to object.

Yes, she returned to school the next day. The dog had mixed feelings about that and so did I. (I can’t lie: I love my kids’ sick days.)

The power of clean I’ve had moments over the years when all I’ve wanted to do is take a hose to my house and power-wash it.

You know, after I turn it upside down, shake out all of the crud and turn it right side up again. Then put everything and everyone back in – like a dollhouse, minus the germs.

3. Strain ginger water into second mug and stir in tablespoon of honey.

Rule #2: Be wary of taking on a mortgage that is more than 2 times your income.

BATAVIA – The Albright Theatre in Batavia will present “Hollywood Arms,” by Carrie Hamilton and Carol Burnett, on weekends beginning March 1 and runs through March 16.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m.

Inspired by the life story of Carol Burnett, “Hollywood Arms” tells the story of three women living on welfare in a one-room apartment. The story is also about shattered hopes and realized dreams.

According the news release, the characters include a tough, funny, yet tender, pill-popping Christian Scientist grandmother; a beautiful wide-eyed and distant mother and struggling writer, who drowns her ambitions in a bottle; a loving but absent and alcoholic father; and a young girl who escapes by creating her own

magical world from her apartment building’s rooftop. “‘Hollywood Arms’ isn’t ‘The Carol Burnett Show.’ It certainly has humorous moments, but at its heart, it is the story of Carol Burnett’s life growing up in the shadows of glamorous Hollywood, dreaming of a brighter life,” said director Veronica Krystal in the release.

‘Safe Haven’ satisfies sweet tooth until off-putting center

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Hoping to re-bottle the lightning captured in “The Notebook” and “Dear John,” romance packager Nicholas Sparks has given his usual formula some sharp edges in “Safe Haven.”

The film, which stars Julianne Hough as a woman on the run from a troubled past, opens like a gritty thriller, complete with furtive looks from under a hoodie, a taut chase through a crowded bus station and a few smidgens of blood.

Soon enough Hough’s character, Katie, has fetched up in the quaint North Carolina town of Southport, where Sparks’ seductive fantasy of self-reinvention takes place.

Quiet and wary, Katie still has elbows sharp enough to keep curious neighbors at bay, at least until an appealing widower named Alex (Josh

Duhamel) manages to charm his way past her chilly reserve.

Directed by “Dear John’s” Lasse Hallstrom, “Safe Haven” doesn’t come close to generating the sparks that made Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling such breakout stars in “The Notebook.”

Hough and Duhamel are attractive enough (someone should cast Hough and Meg Ryan in a mother-daughter drama right now), and they possess an unforced ease when they’re together, but their chance encounters and cautious romantic toe-dipping add up to little more than a pretty bore.

(The film comes most genuinely to life when Hough and Duhamel are joined by the beguiling Mimi Kirkland, who plays Alex’s precocious daughter with welcome brio.)

When a figure from Katie’s past shows up, “Safe Haven” takes on the menacing contours of a slightly safer “Cape Fear.” (This villain is so

dastardly, he’s not above smashing a booze bottle on a Fourth of July parade float.)

Even with Hallstrom’s soporific pacing and uneven tonal approach, “Safe Haven” presents viewers with the undemanding, easy-on-the-eyes escapism that may not qualify as high art but has pride of place in the commercial cinematic canon.

Once Katie’s worlds collide, though, the film descends into maudlin melodrama, which in turn slides into utter ridiculousness with a preposterous plot twist.

“Safe Haven” is one of those confections that satisfy your sweet tooth until you get to their weird, off-putting center. The problem with movies is that you can’t put them back in the box.

“Safe Haven” runs 115 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic material, sexuality, threatening behavior and violence.

Some teens’ anger is more than just moodiness Dear Doctor K: My 19-year-old son is always angry. Is this a normal developmental stage, or should I be concerned?

Dear Reader: The late teenage years are tough. Childhood is over. The protection offered by home and parents will soon end.

Teens know that they will have to make it on their own in the world. Becoming a part of the society of teens around them is very important. Plus there are big challenges ahead: starting college, entering the work force, living away from home for the first time. So, it’s not at all uncommon for teens to be moody, and that includes periodic outbursts of anger that they didn’t have when they were younger.

But when a teen gets increasingly angrier as time goes by – or more rigid and defensive – it’s a cause for concern.

Angry outbursts are a sign that your son is suffering and could use some help – if he’ll accept it. And if your son’s angry outbursts ever injure anyone else, it’s time for you to get him some help, fast.

Here are some things to

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff consider: • Irritability aside, is your son showing other symptoms of depression? Is he having trouble enjoying life? Is he sleeping too little or too much?

Is he gaining or losing a great deal of weight? Does he have low energy or poor concentration?

• Is there any sign that your son might be using an illegal substance? Irritability or changes in mood can be the result of substance use.

• Is your son irritable with everyone or just with you? It is common for children of any age to be intolerant of parents’ input.

As with many things, Mark Twain said it best: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21 years old, I was astonished by how much he’d learned in seven years.”

Is your son going through a

crisis, a challenge or a developmental transition?

Maybe there is a specific problem at the root of his testy behavior that needs attention – relationship trouble, low self-esteem, concerns about his identity, or not feeling up to the pressures of school or work.

Even if he won’t talk to you about this, someone else may be able to get to the bottom of the problem.

There is no guarantee that your son will talk to you about these subjects. Often a parent needs the help of someone else to understand and help reduce a teen’s anger.

That other person may be another family member or friend that the young man trusts, a teacher or coach, his pediatrician, or a trained therapist or school counselor.

So, if your son’s anger goes beyond teenage moodiness, and you find you’re not able to get through to him, look for help.

Dr. Wallace: I’m so happy that you encourage teens to be tobaccofree. I read recently that a survey conducted by the University of Michigan showed that the smoking rate among younger teens (15 and below) is down 50 percent from what it was in the mid-1990s, and for teens 16 and older, it was down 23 percent.

This is great news, and I’m sure your anti-tobacco message has played a part in the smoking decline among teens.

Last year, I lost the best father a girl could ever hope to have. My dad was a super human being, a wonderful husband and a terrific father to his two children.

We lost this marvelous man because he couldn’t overcome his addiction to cigarettes.

Dad started smoking when he was 13, and lung cancer conquered him at the young age of 51. Dad was a heavy smoker. Sometimes he lit up a cigarette before he finished the one smoldering in an ashtray.

He smoked two cartons of cigarettes a week. Dad did his best to try to eliminate his smoking habit, but he just couldn’t. Even when he was diagnosed with lung cancer, he continued to puff away.

I continue to play the “if only” game. If only he hadn’t started smoking.

If only he would have had the inner strength to quit before cancer entered his body. If only he could have reduced the number of cigarettes smoked daily ... .

Smoking not only affects the smoker, it affects all who love him or her. I truly love my dad, and I’m living proof.

Please continue to warn teens of the latent dangers of tobacco. Life is too precious to see it go up in smoke, and leave a loving family behind! – Nameless, St.

Dr. Wallace: My father married Edie two months ago. My real mother died in an automobile accident four years ago. Edie is nice, but she was born in England, and I don’t like a lot of the food she prepares. The rule is that I must take some of all of the prepared meal and eat all that I take – no exceptions!

My dad and I get into big arguments about this. Edie is usually on my side, but my dad is the boss. I do love my dad, but I can’t eat some of this food. Please help!

They say that children don’t always need to finish everything on their plate. They should be given nutritional choices and be permitted to choose what and how much to eat. That sounds like a good plan.

Every time someone in your house turns on a television set, go into another room and reread this column!

Good bridge players do a lot of “reading” at the table. They read the bidding and the played cards, gaining information from them. A good reader would find this deal easy, but someone less literate would struggle.

How should South play in four hearts after West cashes two top diamonds (East playing jack-four, high-low, to show his doubleton), then shifts to a club?

Note South’s advance of his partner’s takeout double. Since South was an unpassed hand, his two-heart single jump showed some 9 to 11 points with fourplus hearts. (If South were a passed hand, he would have been promising a good seven to a poor 10 points.)

South has already conceded two tricks, so he can afford only one more loser. The black suits are safe, so he must handle trumps carefully.

Normally one would either cash the ace, cross to dummy and lead toward the queen; or immediately finesse the queen.

However, can East have the heart king here?

Not if the bidding is to be believed. West surely needs that king. So, reading West for king-doubleton, the right line is to cash the heart ace, then to continue with a low heart, hoping that the king appears.
