…travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living. m. beard ICON HOLIDAYS Icon Holidays does not promise you the World, but we can assure you of the best experiences in the countries in which we specialise. In this brochure you will find magical places and experiences in Greece, and Turkey. (You may want to check out our other brochures which cover India, Egypt, Oman, Jordan and Dubai) After 25 years of travel experience in these regions, we have chosen some of the World’s best 4 and 5 Star properties, as well as a range of unique properties noted for their historical setting and significance. We provide private transfers, and all our touring options are by private vehicle. Throughout this brochure we have included various itinerary suggestions. These are exactly that – suggestions. Icon Holidays plans individual itineraries with our clients so that we give you exactly what you are looking for to maximise your holiday pleasure. That is our aim.

Let us find you that special place – perhaps an authentic Ottoman palace hotel in Istanbul, or a walk on the lonely beaches of Gallipoli, or a place of calm in the hubbub of Athens, or a magnificent resort in the Greek Islands. Our range of quality products will ensure that we find you your perfect holiday setting. Enjoy our brochure. It is only the beginning... when you book with Icon Holidays, we will plan your holiday experience with you, and recommend our favourite properties and sights, and we will also provide you our personal recommendations for restaurants, bars, sites of interest, beaches and touring options. We will guide you towards a holiday to savour.

TANIT The Icon Holidays logo is taken from a mosaic we found whilst exploring the island of Delos. It is the sign of Tanit, the great Phoenician goddess. The ancient Greeks believed she was the lover of the mighty Apollo, who was born on Delos. She is the Mother goddess, and symbol of love and fertility, and was worshipped throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. The sign has links to the Egyptian “Ankh”, the symbol of life. We have chosen the sign of Tanit as our logo, as it so clearly represents a common thread uniting all peoples: mythology, the sea, the sun and moon and the ancient histories of our many varied destinations are all woven together.

We assure you that in terms of room standards and ambience, they are all superb. All properties are rated in the traditional star system. We have tried to describe our properties in terms that best show what they really have to offer, and which make it easier for you to choose the style of accommodation you need. Of course standards may change, service may sometimes not reflect our comments, but we have made every effort to ensure that this brochure reflects our personal views of the properties we choose.

Greece is a country bursting with contrasts……sometimes sophisticated and modern, always with something to remind you of its historical past. This unique haven of very proud and passionate people will enhance your senses and leave indelible memories to ensure that you return. A country where myths and legends are intertwined with every day life, and the forces of nature have produced majestic natural phenomena. Rise early and climb the Acropolis to watch the golden city of Athens awake, or silently share your thoughts with the gods from the towering cliffs of Santorini as the evening sun performs its grand finale. Perhaps share a Greek coffee and life’s mysteries in a village café perched on a mountainside in rugged Crete, and then savour the smells and delights of the local bakery. Watch with quiet envy as a fisherman’s brightly decorated boat glides into harbour, then enjoy some friendly bargaining as you choose your fish from the early morning catch.

Sprint in the tracks of the ancient athletes at Olympia, relish the mountainous silence at mysterious Delphi, or be overwhelmed by the natural beauty of Meteora, and sit in an unknown person’s reserved seat in the awesome theatre of Epidavros. From sublime architecture to natural grandeur, Greece provides it all, but it is impossible to consider Greece without considering the Greeks themselves. In every way the proud peoples of this land dominate your experience. “What separates the Greek experience from that of life in Australia, is our Greek concept of time, and the value we place on it.” (Leonidas Panagopoulos) Bravo! From the moment you arrive anywhere on Greek soil, prepare for things to be in Greek time! No-one rushes and yet everything seems to get done. Late nights dining out with friends and late starts in the morning become the rhythm of your day, and time is filled with wonderful sights and unforgettable experiences.

athens athens, the eye of greece, mother of arts and eloquence. j milton

ATHENS, named after Athena the goddess of wisdom, is built around the Acropolis and the rocky pinnacle of Mt. Lycabettus. Modern Athens has over four million inhabitants. The suburbs cover the barren plain in all directions and the city is packed with lively taverns and bustling shops. Dominating the Athenian landscape, the Acropolis is home to the fabulous Parthenon. Constructed between 447 and 437 BC the Parthenon is situated on the highest part of the Acropolis and reflects the values and the objectives of the Athenian State at that time. It was here that modern democracy was born. Quite literally, you too can sit and walk where Plato and Socrates once strolled. Many people make the mistake of by-passing Athens. You must allow plenty of time to explore everything that Athens has to offer. For the culture lover there are many wonderful museums, galleries and theatres.

6

In the evening, enjoy the spectacle of an orchestral concert or play in the spectacular and original Greek theatre of Herodes Atticus with its towering walls carved from the sides of the Acropolis. Nearby the streets and alleyways of the old city, the Plaka, are bustling with fantastic restaurants, tavernas and nightclubs. For all tastes imaginable there is a place to satiate your appetite. As you discover the different attractions you will see why so many people love to call Athens their home and why many more travel to this fascinating city all year round. Transfers

Icon Holidays provides private transfers for your convenience and to enable you to arrive in comfort and with a minimum of stress. From airports and ferries to hotels and vice versa, our drivers will escort you to your destination. After a long flight or when traffic is chaotic, nothing beats a private transfer for ease and security. If we are not arranging your flights, let us know the date, time of arrival and flight number, and we’ll do the rest. No subway trains and no waiting in queues. Relatively expensive? Perhaps. Value? Absolutely.

Athens sightseeing

Grace and Wisdom Tour Half Day

On this itinerary we first offer you a brief overview of the city of Athens. After picking you up at your hotel in your private vehicle, your guide will escort you throughout. The brief city overview includes stops at the first ‘modern’ Olympic stadium, and the wonderful Temple of Zeus. This part of the day will enable you to fully orientate yourself to Athens’ layout. After this, we’ll have coffee and Greek cakes at one of our favourite coffee shops before climbing the Acropolis to the magnificent Parthenon. Here, your private guide will introduce and explain this quite amazing place. You will be able to visit the Acropolis Museum, and finally spend time wandering through the ancient Agora (market place). A fantastic half day. At the end of the tour we will drop you either back at your hotel, or anywhere else in Athens that you would like to explore. You may even wish to continue on to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion for sunset.

An interesting drive of about 2 to 3 hours through rural Greece will take you to Delphi, a wondrous archaeological site hidden in a dramatic mountain setting. According to the ancient Greeks, Zeus sent out two eagles to fly across the world to meet at its centre, the “navel” of the world. To denote these points Omphalos stones (said to allow direct communication with the gods), were erected in several areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, the most famous being at the oracle in Delphi, the centre of the universe. In classical Greece, the pre-eminent oracle – the Sibyl (or Pythia) – presided here. She exerted considerable influence throughout Hellenic culture and the Greeks consulted her prior to all major decision-making. In the inner hearth of the Temple of Apollo, an eternal flame burned, and following the battle of Plataea, the Greek cities extinguished their fires and brought new fire from the hearth of Greece…. Delphi.

Argolis is a fascinating region of the Peloponnese peninsula. It takes its name from the once capital city of this area, Argos. The first stop is to view the Corinth Canal, built in 1893 to connect the Ionian and Aegean Seas. Before the construction of the canal, ancient mariners would drag their vessels across the narrow isthmus to save sailing time and avoid rough seas. From here we drive to Mycenae, city of Agamemnon, once a heavily fortified stronghold of this famous Bronze Age king. The Mycenaeans were fierce warriors, and much weaponry and armour was discovered in their graves. The most famous discovery, the Golden Mask of Agamemnon, may now be viewed in the National Museum in Athens.

Cape Sounion is located 69 km southeast of Athens at the tip of the Attica peninsula. The Temple of Poseidon, (God of the Sea), dominates the promontory and from its position atop sheer cliffs, offers magnificent views of the Aegean Sea and sunsets over the Saronic Gulf. In ancient times, mariners would see the brilliant white marble columns of the Temple of Poseidon and know they were close to home. “Sounion Hiron” (sanctuary of Sounion) was first mentioned in the Odyssey, as the place where Menelaos stopped during his return from Troy to bury his helmsman. More recently, Lord Byron, the English poet (and sometime graffiti artist!) carved his name onto one of the columns. Although sunset is the recommended time to be at Sounion, an early morning visit without the crowds is also a magical experience.

Perhaps the highlight of this region is Epidavros with the sanctuary of Asklepios, the most brilliant centre of healing in the ancient world. The magnificent theatre, still almost intact, stands in the hollow of a hill not far from the local Archaeological Museum.

ATHENS HOTELS

Grande Bretagne Hotel Deluxe |

King George Palace Hotel Deluxe |

Built in 1862 as a Royal Palace, this historic property retains superb period features and is furnished with magnificent antiques. Standard rooms are not huge, but they are superbly presented. Amongst its grand history, it served as the meeting place of the modern Olympic Committee upon the formation of the Modern Games. Throughout its time as a superb hotel it has been ‘home’ to an eclectic range of guests including Indirah Gandhi, Francis Ford Coppola, David Bowie, Jean Paul Gaultier and Sting. Conde Naste rates it as one of the best hotels in the world, and it boasts Alexander’s Bar which Forbes.com rates as the best bar in the world. Situated on Syntagma Square, it is central to all that Athens has to offer.

This wonderful property was originally an annex of the Royal Palace which now houses the Greek Parliament. For a short period it became the residence of the Prime Minister, and King George II stayed at the property in the 1950’s and 60’s. During its life as a hotel, it has hosted such luminaries as Maria Callas, Marilyn Monroe, Francois Mitterand, Aristotle Onassis, Frank Sinatra and Brigitte Bardot. Combining 20thC grandeur and elegance with modern technology and comfort, it remains a favoured hotel of international celebrities, and houses the acclaimed Tudor Hall restaurant with wonderful views of the Acropolis.

NJV Athens Plaza Hotel Deluxe

St George Lycabettus Hotel boutique

Boasting rooms and suites decorated by Ralph Lauren, Fornacetti and Versace, the NJV Athens Plaza sits right on Syntagma Square in the heart of Athens. From here it is a short stroll in to the bustling Plaka or the more bohemian Monastiraki area. This hotel has forged a reputation for outstanding staff and wonderful service. It is beautifully appointed and displays a modern elegance in keeping with its status. A superbly appointed property, the hotel is also fortunate enough to host The Parliament gourmet restaurant with its wonderful range of Mediterranean cuisine. Late at night, Explorer’s Lounge with its Athenian club-like atmosphere, is a great spot for a night-cap.

Views! Everything about this property is underscored by its spectacular views. From Le Grand Balcon restaurant (which Vogue, Elle and Stern say has the best views in Europe) to the external rooms overlooking the Acropolis, this wonderfully chic hotel has much to offer. Set in Athens’ most prestigious suburb of Kolonaki, the SGL oozes charm and refinement. Byzantine, Victorian and modern-Greek art adorn the walls and open spaces. For a really special stay, enjoy the sumptuous Presidential or Marie-Christine Suites, or for a more intimate experience, the exterior rooms offer elegance and great views. Try Frames Restaurant for truly modern cuisine, or on a warm summer’s evening the casual outside elegance of Frames’ Garden Restaurant.

Electra Palace Hotel

Hera Hotel

Royal Olympic Hotel

Position. Position. Position. Located between Syntagma Square and the bustling Plaka, the Electra Palace provides a great refuge from the wonderful but chaotic Athenian world. After an eighteenmonth period of complete renovation and refurbishment, the hotel’s exclusive style creates a unique feeling of class and luxury. The hotel’s superior rooms have balconies with brilliant views of the nearby Acropolis, and the suites are enhanced with Jacuzzi bathtubs. A new spa and relaxation area has been introduced incorporating a heated indoor swimming pool with steam room and sauna. This fine hotel has always been a favourite of ours and its new look and extra facilities makes it even more appealing.

Literally situated near to the base of the Acropolis, and with marvellous views of the Parthenon, the Hera is a lovely property of only 38 rooms. Our favourite rooms are the Deluxe rooms which occupy the entire 6th floor. Each Deluxe room has a private veranda with spectacular views across to the Acropolis. The Hera is a modern property, but has a neo-classical style. The use of modern technologies presents a contemporary experience. During Summer, enjoy the Peacock Restaurant on the roof garden, where you can gaze at the Parthenon whilst sampling the modern Greek cuisine. Surrounding the hotel is a fabulous range of great tavernas and restaurants, and it is an easy walk to Syntagma Square, the Plaka and the Acropolis. A great location.

This property occupies an excellent position between the ancient Stadium and the Acropolis. Across the road is the fabulous Temple of Zeus, which is spectacularly lit at night and in full view of the hotel. The Royal Olympic was completely refurbished only recently, and it presents an excellent place to stay in Athens, with a Metro only a couple of minutes walk from the lobby, and the Plaka within a 10 minute stroll. The chic décor in all public areas is beautifully presented, and our favourite rooms, the Athenian Panorama Rooms, are elegantly furnished with wonderful views of the Temple of Zeus. There is a great bar area, a fine library where you can enjoy an evening cocktail or morning coffee with spectacular views, an excellent pool area with bar, and near to the hotel are some absolutely wonderful local restaurants.

RATING | There is quite an art involved in successfully Body travelling Copyaround Greece and its islands. Firstly, during the summer months (June to October), ferries, fast ferries and domestic flights operate fairly reliable regular services, whereas in the winter period, flights and ferries are quite limited. However, even during the summer it can be quite normal for ferries and flights to be disrupted by severe weather or local conditions. Some ferry journeys can be quite lengthy and tedious, calling in at several ports en route, and we suggest using the domestic flight networks where possible to access the islands. Certainly short inter-island ferries can be interesting, and the dramatic arrival by sea into Santorini is unforgettable. We understand the intricacies involved in travelling around the Greek Islands‌. let us advise you and assist in making the right decisions and connections.

SANTORINI

Santorini is an island of mesmerizing views and stunning, unforgettable sunsets. Believed by many to be the original site of Atlantis, this is truly one of the World’s most beautiful places. What is there to do on Santorini? If you are able to prise yourself away from the extraordinary views and idyllic location, try shopping in the narrow streets of Thira, swimming at the numerous beaches, wandering through the cliff-top village of Oia, or making a visit to the ancient archaeological site of Akrotiri. In the afternoon try sitting on your cliff top balcony overlooking the spectacular caldera, sipping ouzo and tasting fresh olives. This will easily become your daily routine as you wait to watch the glorious sunsets.

Getting there Fast ferries operate from Piraeus (Athens) to Santorini on a regular basis in the summer months, and the journey takes about 4-5 hours. Business class is available on most services and will provide a more relaxed and comfortable journey. Slower ferries can take up to 9-10 hours, calling at many islands en route. We suggest the 45 minute flight usually operated by a 40-60 seat aircraft and economy class only. Santorini may also be reached by ferry & fast ferry from Crete, Mykonos and other Cycladic Islands.

Transfers

There are very few taxis on the island, and during peak periods they can be very difficult to find. Let us arrange private transfers to and from your accommodation. Most hotels and villas do not have accurate street addresses and can be very difficult to find. Our transfer people will also advise the properties of your imminent arrival to ensure that porters are waiting at the cliff top to meet you and carry your luggage down the many steps to your accommodation.

MYKONOS

In the summer months there are the legendary parties in Mykonos town, and plenty of great recovery beaches for the day-after. But from dawn to dusk, Mykonos retains the charm of a small Greek Island town, but with a sophisticated array of restaurants and exquisite shopping. Along the waterfront, fishing boats rock at anchor, and each morning the fisherman clean and sell their catch at the open-air fish market. Our program features properties near or in this wonderful town as well as quieter beach properties away from the hustle and vibrancy of the town centre. Whilst on Mykonos, make sure you leave time to visit the nearby sacred island of Delos, birth place of Apollo, with its superb ruins and ancient theatre.

there is a land in the midst of the wine-dark sea, rich and fair, washed by waves homer’s song of crete

CRETE Home to the painter El Greco and writer Nikos Kazantzakis (Zorba the Greek), Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands, offering many different delights for all tastes. It is fabulous. We recommend spending a few days in the East to enjoy the picturesque fishing villages, fertile valleys and plateaus, and the enthralling Minoan archaeological sites of Knossos and Phaistos. Then discover Western Crete with its rugged mountain ranges, gorges and isolated villages. A stay in the old city of Chania will certainly be a highlight of your stay in Crete. Without doubt, Crete is best explored by car. Getting there

We suggest the short 50 minute flight from Athens to Heraklion or Chania, generally operated by jet aircraft with both business and economy class seating. In the summer months there is a fast ferry service from Heraklion to Santorini, a journey of about 2 hours, with business class available.

You will need a car, and you should be prepared for life in a lay-back quintessential Greek fishing village. Who could ask for more?

This beautiful property was once a Venetian mansion, built in the 17thC. It is a property of simple elegance, whose suites are modern, stylish and superbly set up. The hotel has only 21 suites, and maintains a discreet but warm ambience. Situated in the old town only 40m from the gorgeous Venetian harbour (though far enough away to be entirely private) the property is entered through a secluded gateway which opens on to a superb mosaic courtyard. If it is available, try to book the single suite which has a huge private rooftop courtyard with a magnificent view over the tiny harbour and its ancient Venetian lighthouse. A great property with informal and friendly service, but there are a few stairs to climb! But worth it.

The Luxury Senior Suites have balconies with sea views and are ideal for couples, whereas the Luxury Family Suites are perfect for families or a group of friends. The superbly appointed villas feature private swimming pools and large terraces. For those seeking the finest qualities in life, the Royal Spa Villa has stunning views of the Mediterranean, and offers a private infinity pool with Jacuzzi, gym room, sauna and steam bath. Here is the idyllic setting to live your own private dream.

Self-drive

There is no better way to discover Crete than in your own vehicle. Although Heraklion and Chania can be a bit confusing to find your way about, once you have the hang of it you will find your own vehicle a great asset. The main towns along the northern coast of Crete are linked by a freeway. Further South the roads are an adventure! There are many dirt roads, but in the main most roads are paved, though narrow. Thankfully traffic is minimal outside the main towns, and the views are magnificent. Picturesque villages, mountain peaks, spectacular views, ancient ruins, local markets, herds of goats, vineyards and olive groves and beautiful beaches all await your spirit of discovery.

ITHACA

The beautiful and calm Ithaca is one of the seven Ionian Islands. The interior of this unspoilt island is quite mountainous, covered with pine forests, cypresses, olive trees and vineyards, with a coastline of enchanting coves with sparkling blue waters. Ithaca is famous as the island of the mythical Odysseus (Ulysses), and the land where the faithful Penelope waited patiently over twenty years for her husband to return from the Trojan War. Fortunately, Ithaca has not yet been discovered or spoiled by mass tourism, and it is able to offer many simple and relaxing pursuits such as inspiring walks, leisurely breaks in sleepy picturesque villages and visits to the many archaeological sites associated with the stories of Homer. Getting there

There is no airport on Ithaca, so the easiest connection from Athens is via the one hour flight to Kefallonia, then a short ferry connection to Ithaca. Alternatively, in the summer months Ithaca may be reached by ferry connection from the mainland ports of Astakos and Patras. 20

Levendis Estate boutique |

Available only through Icon Holidays, Levendis is a 7-acre private and gated country estate on the shores of the Ionian island of Ithaca. Perched on a hillside and having spectacular sea views, this organic olive oil producing estate includes four houses, a swimming pool and outdoor amenities. The four traditionally styled houses are scattered throughout the grounds, and to ensure privacy, each house is surrounded by its own gardened terraces. Footpaths and stairways meander through the groves and gardens to the swimming pool; and further down to the beaches below.

Secluded, and with panoramic views from your terrace, the bedlam of life is peeled away – what remains is absolute peace, tranquillity and beauty. The minimum stay at Levendis is 7 nights, and includes free use of a car, and a kitchen well stocked with beverages and foods from the Estate. Fresh bread is delivered daily, there is a daily housekeeping service, a personal laundry service and traditional fare made with organic produce can be prepared for you if you wish. Each villa comes with the use of an air-conditioned car to explore the island.

SKIATHOs

Skiathos is the smallest of the Sporades group of islands, located in the northwestern Aegean. It is a beautiful, wooded island, far greener than one would expect a Greek island to be, and is renowned for its fine sandy beaches. The island has only one main settlement, the port town of Skiathos, and the rest of the island consists of beautiful large beaches, churches, and archaeological sites. Getting there

The easiest way to reach Skiathos from Athens is by the short 50 minute domestic flight. There are daily services in the summer by 40 seat aircraft with economy class only.

Marnei Mare Villas villa

Aegean Suites Hotel

Marnei Mare is a delightful cluster of three villas overlooking the crystal clear waters of two private coves. The estate is essentially an olive grove which the owners use to produce their own organic olive oil, and many different varieties of wine from their organic vineyard. The villas are modern with high wooden ceilings and terracotta flooring throughout. Varying in size, they are ideal for families or friends, and have traditional Mediterranean open plan kitchens. All bath and shower rooms are beautifully finished in Greek marble. Sliding doors lead out on to terraces with a landscaped patio garden overlooking sandy beaches and sea through the lavender gardens. Guests are able to enjoy the owners’ farm products, which include all sorts of herbs, mountain tea, chamomile, thyme and mushrooms, along with organically grown summer fruits and vegetables. Marnei Mare has two private coves, two swimming pools and two delightful beaches. The local harbour village of Karlovasi is just five kilometres away, and offers markets, bars, tavernas and a host of lovely fish restaurants.

Nestled amongst olive trees, on a hillside overlooking the sandy beach of Megali Ammos, Aegean Suites is a mixture of traditional styled buildings combined with contemporary Mediterranean chic, presenting an exclusive atmosphere. Each of the 20 suites consists of a spacious living room area, separate bedroom and bathroom, and all are stylishly decorated. All Deluxe suites have impeccable sea views from the terrace overlooking the bay and the Aegean Sea, whilst the Standard suites offer the same style with spacious terraces and garden views. Karavia restaurant by the pool serves a variety of light dishes based on traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, but for exceptional fine dining, Pelagos gourmet restaurant offers inspired dishes presented by award winning chefs.

mediterranean and aegean cruising The Star Clipper

cruising is a pleasure -m krafft sailing is a passion! - owner of star clippers

One of the greatest pleasures man is capable of being granted in this world is to sail the aegean in springtime when a gentle breeze is blowing. I have never been able to conceive how heaven could be in any way different. What other celestial or mundane joy could be more perfectly in harmony with man’s body and soul? n kazantzakis

22

Try to think of Star Clipper as more than just a cruise – more like a “sailing adventure” – with the tradition and style of sailing and the luxuries of a multi-million dollar private yacht. Small compared to ocean liners but very large for a sailing ship – 110 metres in length with masts towering to 70 metres, carrying 11,000 square metres of sails. Décor is reminiscent of the grand age of sail, with gleaming brass, antique prints, and with teak and mahogany fittings and decks. The Star Clipper is spacious, and carries a maximum of only 170 passengers. Meals are relaxed, and dress standards suggest a ‘neat casual’ approach. As with any cruise, day trips and activities abound. One of the great bonuses is that passenger numbers are very small compared to cruise liners, and you will be made to feel very special throughout your journey. Whether you choose to climb the masts (which you can do under supervision), read quietly in the library, go swimming or lie in the sun, there is an activity for everyone.

The ship offers many of the facilities found on the larger ocean liners such as, Piano Bar, Lounge, Tropical Bar, Library, Restaurant, and Swimming pools (yes 2 pools on board). All public rooms are airconditioned; all cabins have individually controlled air conditioning.

Northern Cyclades 7 nights/8 days

Our first port of call is Kusadasi in Turkey. This bustling town is the access point for the famous archaeological site of Ephesus. A short sail takes you to Samos where we visit Pythagoria, birth place of both Pythagoras and Aesop. The next stop is Patmos where St John the Divine lived near what is now the Monastery of the Apocalypse. There will also be time to visit the Monastery of St John which houses priceless icons and treasures. Next day we sail to Delos, birthplace of Apollo and now an extraordinary archaeological site of great importance. Only a kilometre away is Mykonos where we will overnight. This cosmopolitan island is a wonderful blend of traditional village and fun nightlife. The famous windmills sit above the town, and narrow streets of white-washed buildings lead down to the water front. Next day we sail to Sifnos. This remote but beautiful island is a far cry from Mykonos’ bustle, and the town of Apollonia provides a centre for arts and crafts. The final day ends back at Piraeus where you can continue your journey. 24

Car rental

One of the best ways to explore Greece is in your own rental vehicle. The itineraries already suggested are a great starting point. With your own vehicle you have absolute flexibility. Outside of the larger towns and cities, the roads in Greece are far less busy than those in most Western European countries - in fact, driving in country Greece is a lot like driving in country Australia other than being on the opposite side of the road, and with totally different landscapes. It is a wonderful experience to be able to explore small villages, and off the beaten track archaeological sites and natural wonders. Deserted beaches, mountain views, goat-herds, vineyards and olive groves, wineries, local restaurants and tavernas are just some of the fabulous experiences that a self drive holiday can bring to you.

We invite you to re-live those distant and almost forgotten lessons as you tread the streets of the legendary Troy of Homer’s ‘Iliad’, or exotic Constantinople (Istanbul), capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, or maybe travel to the reputed resting place of Noah’s Ark. Visit the secluded spot where Mark Antony and Cleopatra met and married, the town where Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) lived, the final home of the Virgin Mary, and follow the trail of the Seven Churches mentioned in the testaments. Travel along the Old Silk Road of Marco Polo, sail the incomparable turquoise waters of the Aegean, and sample food fit for a Sultan. Share these experiences with the warm and friendly people of Turkey who are as varied as their landscape….from black hair to red; from brown eyes to blue, all combine to make Turkey unique. The one thing that is uniform throughout this fascinating country is the unrivalled hospitality of its people.

istanbul if one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze upon istanbul. de lemartine

In 667 B.C. the colony of Byzantium was established at the tip of the Istanbul peninsula, where the Bosporus and the Golden Horn meet and flow into the Marmara Sea. Almost a millennium later, during the era of the Roman Emperor Constantine, Byzantium was renamed Constantinople ( 330 A.D. ) and in 1453 AD, the city became the capital of the Ottoman Empire assuming its present name, Istanbul. It continues to be a city that creates its own history. The Old City, whose skyline is dominated by the magnificent Blue Mosque, offers you such wonderful sites as Aghia Sophia, once a Christian church and then a Mosque, the Topkapi Palace, home to the last Sultan, and the incredible Grand Bazaar.

Classic Constantinople Tour Full Day

Here are two exciting full day tours of Istanbul. Each is designed to present a special insight into the remarkable history of this fascinating city, and they both offer a taste of daily life in modern Istanbul. Your guide will meet you at your hotel and discuss the day’s itinerary with you. During the tour you will be transported in a private vehicle, but there will also be times when it is far more interesting to walk and experience the local atmosphere, so dress comfortably, with suitable footwear.

The day begins with a visit to the magnificent Aghia Sophia, one of the finest examples of architecture in the world. This amazing building was originally a church, then converted to a mosque, and now respected as a museum. A short break for a coffee or tea at the 16thC Café Aga Medresesi, then a highlight of your stay in Istanbul will be a tour of Topkapi Palace, the former imperial residence of the Great Ottoman Empire. Nowadays this impressive palace is a fascinating museum displaying the treasures and artefacts of the Sultans. After lunch at Topkapi Palace, a stroll around the ancient site of the Roman Hippodrome will reveal some imported artefacts such as the Obelisk from Egypt, the Serpentine Column from Delphi, and the fountain of Willhelm II. A visit to the 17th century Blue Mosque, dominating the Istanbul skyline, will astound you with

its decorative blue tiles and six minarets. Walk by the “milion”, a stone indicating the centre of Constantinople (the centre of the ancient world) then rest for a while and soak up the local atmosphere in the Medressa of Corlulu Ali Pasha whilst enjoying a coffee and narguile (waterpipe). Then a short stroll to the famous Grand Bazaar, with its 5,000 shops amidst a colourful mixture of mosques, coffee shops and even Turkish Baths!

Spices, Ships and Sultans Tour Full Day

Start the day with an insight into the lavish tastes and power of the Sultans with a visit to the Dolmabahce Palace. Dominating the waterfront, this superb palace, built towards the end of the Ottoman Empire, boasts 248 rooms, 6 Turkish baths and 2,700 windows! After this you will visit the Sadberk Hanim Museum, a wooden mansion built in the 19th century. Then take a delightful drive out of the city for lunch at a waterfront fish restaurant followed by a special “Turkish dessert” in the picturesque village of Sariyer. Here, your cruise boat awaits to show you the delights of the Bosphorus. This narrow stretch of water separates Europe from Asia and connects the Marmara Sea to the Black Sea. Relax with a coffee or tea as you cruise past picturesque fishing villages and seafront wooden holiday homes to arrive back into the bustling port of Istanbul. Next, just across the road, your senses will be stimulated with the tantalising tastes, aromas and sounds of the Spice Market at the Egyptian Bazaar. There is no sailing ground more beautiful than the Turkish Coast between Bodrum to the north-west of Marmaris, and Antalya to the south-east. Icon Holidays, in conjunction with our experienced Turkish gulet operator, will provide the ingredients for this unique sailing experience. The expertise and absolute attention to every detail has resulted in our Turkish gulet operator being recently chosen to co-ordinate the sailing holiday for the British Royal Family. With this reputation behind them, they will dedicate themselves to provide you with the very best in gulets, crew, itineraries and overall enjoyment for a perfect sailing holiday.

Imagine 7 or more glorious days on board your own gulet, cruising around some of world’s most stunning coastline, whilst being pampered by a dedicated crew. We will co-ordinate the whole itinerary, allowing you and your family or friends to discuss the finer details together with the Captain during the cruise. He will be happy to comply with your wishes, weather permitting.

Please note that our gulets are of the highest standard. They are luxurious, and are superbly finished. They should not be confused with the more ‘rustic’ gulets found in other programs.

Gulets are gracious and elegant motor sailers, built of iroko (white mahogany) or mahogany and styled with pointed fore and rounded aft. The foredecks offer large uncluttered sun bathing areas equipped with sun mattresses, and the expansive aft decks have become a famous feature of the Turkish gulets. Protected by a sun awning, the aft deck has a wide cushioned area for lounging and a table with chairs perfect for “al fresco” dining. The indoor saloons provide a cosy atmosphere and typically have a small bar, library and sound system.

What could be finer than to charter your own gulet for the exclusive use of your family, or to share with a small group of your special friends.

Light and airy below decks, each cabin has a double bed or twin berths and some have an upper single bunk. All cabins have opening port holes, and many gulets now have ducted

air-conditioning. Each cabin has an en-suite hot and cold shower, hand basin and toilet. Each gulet has an experienced and knowledgeable captain, a chef and a deck hand who will host you and look after the boat. They are prepared to assist and pamper you in every way, from suggesting suitable anchorages and arranging shore excursions to serving you cocktails and three delicious meals a day. The crew have their own separate quarters. A typical restful day might be spent reading a book and sun bathing whilst sipping a cool drink on deck, whereas a more active day may include windsurfing, fishing or, when the yacht is at anchor in a beautiful cove, hiking in the woods or swimming and snorkelling amid schools of fish and ancient underwater ruins. While docked you may wish to spend the morning touring a nearby ancient city or have a special shore evening in a Turkish village. You can just let yourself drift along from day to day allowing your gulet to take the strain and enjoy the cruise in complete relaxation. All of this adding up to make a perfectly special gulet holiday experience.
