Tanit The Icon Holidays logo is taken from a mosaic we found whilst exploring the island of Delos. It is the sign of Tanit, the great Phoenician goddess. The ancient Greeks believed she was the lover of the mighty Apollo, who was born on Delos. She is the Mother goddess, and symbol of love and fertility, and was worshipped throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. The sign has links to the Egyptian “Ankh”, the symbol of life. We have chosen the sign of Tanit as our logo, as it so clearly represents a common thread uniting all peoples: mythology, the sea, the sun and moon and the ancient histories of our many varied destinations are all woven together.

Hotel Ratings We take great pride in the selection of products in this brochure. We literally know every property, and enjoy them all but often for very many different reasons. We assure you that in terms of room standards and ambience, they are all superb. All properties are rated in the traditional star system. We have tried to describe our properties in terms that best show what they really have to offer, and which make it easier for you to choose the style of accommodation you need. Of course standards may change, service may sometimes not reflect our comments, but we have made every effort to ensure that this brochure reflects our personal views of the properties we choose.

Egypt remains one of life’s great destinations. The sheer scale, age and volume of the ancient ruins and tombs found along the entire course of the Nile, is extraordinary by any standard. Magnificent temples, superb sculptures and intricately decorated ancient tombs are only some of the delights of this wonderful land. Add to these bustling towns, diverse peoples, stunning desert landscapes, extraordinary bazaars, the World’s longest river, and of course, the Pyramids of Giza. Include in this mix the enormous and ancient city of Cairo, and you have one of the most exciting places to visit on Earth. Our program in Egypt provides plenty of opportunity for you to add days at either end, and allows time for calm thought and personal contemplation of the mysteries of life, which a journey to Egypt seems to inspire.

cairo he who hath not seen cairo hath not seen the world: her soil is gold, her nile is a marvel. she is the mother of the world. from the thousand and one arabian nights

Cairo, the Jewel of the Orient, Mother of Egypt, city of a thousand minarets, and the melting pot of ancient and modern civilizations! Its 17 million inhabitants are at the centre of all routes connecting the three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe. Greater Cairo extends on the banks of the River Nile to the south of its delta where the Nile divides into two tributaries. It is the city where past and present meet. On the east side stands the evidence of 2000 years of Islamic, Christian Coptic and Jewish culture which flourishes to this day. On its west side lies the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis (Giza), and site of the wondrous Pyramids and Sphinx. Whatever you do, make sure that you leave time to explore. Start your day with tea at Café Fishawi in the heart of the Grand Khan El Khalili Bazaar. Later explore this extraordinary bazaar with its gold and silversmiths, cloth-makers, metalworkers and woodworkers. Bargain hard! Then visit some of the beautiful mosques found throughout the city. Climb the ancient walls of the city, and explore the buildings and grounds of the ancient Citadel which dominates the skyline. 4

Transfers

Cairo Sightseeing Tours

Cairo and its airport can be chaotic! Taxis are not always easy to find, many drivers do not speak any English at all, and most cabs are not exactly roadworthy. We strongly recommend that you book a transfer to and from your hotel and airport. Our vehicles are well maintained, the drivers are professional and they will ensure that your transfer is smooth and uneventful – traffic permitting!

The Seventh Wonder Tour Full Day This morning, with excitement building, we’ll drive to Giza to view the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. The Great Pyramid at Giza is the only surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It remains an absolute wonder in the modern world. You may choose to go deep in to the heart of the Pyramid to explore the actual burial chamber, or perhaps if enclosed spaces are not for you, a photo opportunity astride a Bedouin camel may be preferred! Your day at the Pyramids includes a visit to the Solar Boat, built to transport the bodies of the Pharaohs to the after-life. This extraordinary vessel was built between 69 30 BC, and is wonderfully preserved. After lunch, you will tour Memphis, the capital city of the Old Kingdom, and view the superb alabaster statue of Rameses II. From here you will continue on to Sakkara to view Egypt’s first pyramid, the Step Pyramid.

Mummies, Mosques and Markets Full Day Today begins with the Egyptian Museum, home to a fabulous collection of antiquities, including those from the tomb of Tutankhamen. In the opinion of this writer, the death mask of Tutankhamen is the most beautiful handcrafted piece of art in the World. A visit to the Cairo Museum is warranted just for this! The sheer scope of this museum is overwhelming, but our guide will ensure you gain the best experience possible. This afternoon, explore the world of Islamic Cairo, including the 19th century Mosque of Mohammed Ali and the vast Citadel. Visit Khan el Khalili Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest bazaars, where you will have the time to wander and explore. An absolute ‘must’ whilst at the Bazaar is to sit at Café Fishawi and enjoy a cup of aromatic tea, or even try a shisha (waterpipe) with apple infused tobacco, as you watch life pass by.

Rooms are large, and all rooms either overlook the Nile, or face across the minarets of Cairo to the Citadel. Décor throughout is glamorous, and rooms are refined and relatively understated. One of the outstanding features of this property is its terrific staff who are helpful at all times. Alexandria

Renaissance Hotel

Four Seasons at San Stefano Deluxe

The Marriott Renaissance is centrally located, and overlooks the sparkling Mediterranean. Although separated from the ocean by the Corniche, it does have its own private beach for guests to soak up the sun and swim in an uncrowded environment. Guest rooms are modern and well equipped with all the amenities of a 5 Star property. We definitely favour the sea view rooms, as the views are breathtaking. The 43 Suites are large, overlook the Mediterranean, and offer a great opportunity to pamper yourself at the end of each day’s excursions. For a really relaxing spot, try the Library Lounge with its leather armchairs, great range of reading material and wonderful service. We recommend the Renaissance as a comfortable hotel with great service standards and superbly positioned to take advantage of the beach and the ‘must see’ sights of Alexandria.

Situated on the famous Alexandria Corniche, the newest addition to the Four Seasons’ range presents a wonderful accommodation choice overlooking San Stefano beach. With décor presented by Pierre Yves Rochon, the hotel oozes European chic and Mediterranean and Egyptian style. Each of the 4 room types and 4 Suites have furnished balconies and wonderful views to the city or the sea. Rooms are superbly outfitted and appointed, and bathrooms are suitably lavish. luxor “ can you see anything?” “ yes, wonderful things!”

lord carnarvon and howard carter, upon opening tutankhamen’s tomb

Luxor is possibly the World’s greatest outdoors museum. The town is separated by the Nile, with the ancient site of Thebes on the West Bank, and the towns of Luxor and Karnak on the East Bank. Together the area is known as Luxor, and is the stepping off point for visits to Karnak and Luxor Temples, the Valley of the Queens and the incredible necropolis of the Valley of the Kings. The current world is represented in Luxor by wonderful bazaars, restaurants and bars. If you get the chance spend at least two nights here.

LUXOR HOTELS Old Winter Palace Deluxe | This beautiful ‘belle époque’ property was built in 1886, and has housed Heads of State, famous writers including Agatha Christie and was central to Howard Carter’s announcement of the finding of Tutankhamen’s tomb. The hotel is on the Corniche overlooking the Nile. There are only 86 rooms and 6 suites. All rooms are tastefully decorated, spacious and contain every modern amenity. High ceilings, cotton sheers and light colours provide a cool and elegant ambience. Rooms overlooking the Nile are highly prized, and those with garden views look on to the wonderful tropical gardens and pool area. Suites are superb – large, elegant and with wonderful views. Try 1886 Restaurant, or enjoy a nightcap in the Royal Bar. The Old Winter Palace is a hotel to savour.

Al Moudira Boutique

Sonesta St George

This unique boutique property is far from the madding crowds of Luxor! If you would like a quiet and relaxed place to stay, this is it. Situated on the West Bank, this small property offers wonderful rooms and suites. Architecturally the hotel follows Arabic design, and is reminiscent of the Riads of Morocco. Gorgeous authentic furniture and soft furnishings provide a wonderful setting for your stay here. There are excellent Suites available. The swimming pool is heated for year round comfort. The Pavilion Restaurant is excellent and features Eastern Mediterranean flavours, and there are two bars for the late night discussions of your day exploring Thebes and the nearby Valley of the Kings.

Set quite literally on the banks of the Nile, this property certainly retains the best position in Luxor. The foyer is decorated with marble and presents a clear idea that this property has strong ties to the Egypt of a bygone era. Views of the river are fabulous from most rooms and public areas, and it is a joy to sit out on the terrace to dine, watching the feluccas ply their trade on the river. Décor is certainly ‘high Egyptian’ and guest rooms reflect the French influence often found in Egypt. The outdoors areas including the pool step down towards the river, so you are certainly close to the river action wherever you go in the hotel. Staff are attentive and uphold the excellent standards of the Sonesta group of companies.

nile cruising it flows through old hushed egypt and its sands, like some grave mighty thought threading a dream. j h hunt

A journey down the Nile is a journey through time... a journey through the history of an immortal civilization whose legacy remains for all to see – temples, palaces and tombs of unparalleled size and grandeur, decorated with exquisite hieroglyphics and frescos, and towering above ancient mosaic floors. Our ships on the Nile are really closer to a floating hotel than a traditional ship. Much smaller than sea-going cruise ships, they provide a wonderful linking journey between the many archaeological stops along this greatest of rivers, and as you sail you are privileged to watch the lives of the local peoples as they farm the rich lands and fish the waters. Only a kilometre beyond the river’s banks, the desert broods and waits. Nights are usually spent moored, and excursions to such sites as Edfu, the Valley of the Kings, Luxor and Karnak take place in the cool of the mornings, with the afternoons spent relaxing onboard by the pool as the journey unfolds.

10

These carefully selected tour combinations offer you a complete Cairo and Nile Valley holiday. Wonderful hotels, the best ships on the river, qualified guides, all sightseeing and entrances included, opportunities for ballooning near Luxor, breakfast and most lunches in Cairo, and all meals whilst on your cruise are just some of the features of these packages. As we usually use ‘all suite’ cruise ships, we avoid the mass tourist crowds. Enjoy! Cruise itineraries begin with embarkation in either Aswan or Luxor, and finish with disembarkation in Luxor or Aswan (Voyages run in both directions)

They were popular amongst those who wished to enjoy Egypt at a leisurely pace, to drink in the landscapes, and peruse the monuments and villages on the riverbanks. Our dahabiyya, the ‘Hadeel’ has only 8 cabins, each with full en-suite facilities and air-conditioning. Built to traditional design, it is very much a 21st C craft in terms of comfort and facilities. Unlike the larger cruise ships, dahabiyyas are able to berth far from the madding crowd.

Upon reaching the other side, there is a short transfer to the ‘takeoff’ site. This changes daily depending upon weather conditions, so that you are guaranteed to float over as many sites of interest as possible. This has to be one of the most exhilarating and yet serene activities imaginable. Close enough to the ground to feel connected with the locals going about their daily routines, and yet high enough for absolutely spectacular views of all before you. Our pilots all have years of experience, and the balloons all have aircraft ratings.

Originally a small fishing settlement, Dubai was annexed in 1830 by a branch of the Maktoum family who still rule the Emirate today. Traders from India and Iran began to settle in the growing town, with fishing and trade being the main industries. Following the discovery of oil in 1966, the subsequent break away as a British Protectorate and the formation of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai’s transformation began. The result is exciting modern Dubai, with world class hotels and brilliant amenities. Al Qasr (Madinat Jumeirah) Deluxe This is a terrific property in the heart of Jumeirah, and set against a backdrop of canals and ocean views. All room types are excellent, though we certainly prefer those rooms with sea-views. All rooms have private balconies. Décor is outstanding, with clear Middle Eastern design mixing with modern and functional furniture and fittings. The Suites are gorgeous, and the extra room is worth every cent. As you wander through this hotel, the scent of jasmine and the brilliant flower arrangements beautifully compliment the fine art and furniture in all public areas. There is an enormous range of restaurants with every conceivable cuisine type, and you can charge meals to your room from any of the hotels and restaurants in the complex.

Dar Al Masyaf (Madinat Jumeirah) Deluxe Best described as relaxed, private and sophisticated. Literally translated as ‘Summer House’, Dar Al Masyaf comprises a series of intimate boutique ‘hotels’, each with either canal views or sea views. The rooms are exquisitely decorated and furnished in Arabic style and with attention to detail and function. Forming part of the Madinat complex, there is access to dozens of restaurants and a great shopping area. Our favourite rooms are right on Jumeirah Beach, and the complex has its own excellent swimming pool as well. The ‘summer houses’ have their own dedicated staff, a quiet and cool private reception area which doubles as a reading lounge, and access to either beautiful gardens, a network of canals, the beach or the pool area. Dar Al Masyaf is a superb property in every way.

Burj Al Arab (or so it is said!) Extraordinary. Over the top. Luxurious. Decadent. Fabulous. Mind-blowing. These are some of the words most often used when describing ‘the Burj’. A stay at the Burj confers completely appropriate bragging rights! This all suite property provides a level of luxury unparalleled anywhere else on Earth. From the moment you see the fabulous silhouette of this landmark property to the moment you enter your suite you will be amazed at the audacity of the Burj Al Arab designers. OMAN

The Sultanate of Oman is perhaps the most traditional of the countries in this region, yet its peoples welcome visitors with open arms and friendly smiles. It is a fascinating country, with sub-tropical regions in the South, and spectacular arid mountain ranges and broad deserts in the central regions and the North. Although the country is embracing tourism, strict guidelines have been put in place to limit development to low-rise properties. Heavy emphasis has been placed on the preservation of architecture, history and cultural identity. In short, the whole of Oman is a breath of fresh air. Here you have the Middle East in all its finery, respectful of all peoples and proud of its ancient heritage. Join us to explore this fabulous country.

Muscat The capital of Oman, is in reality a blend of 3 cities – Muscat, Ruwi and Matrah. These three cities stretch along the coast for about 50 km, and each presents its own wealth of experiences and diversity. Ancient forts, a fabulous Corniche, beautiful Harbour side homes, the Royal Palace of the Sultan, exotic souqs and fabulous mosques can all be found in ‘greater Muscat’. Muscat is most famous for its trade in mother of pearl and frankincense. Distances are quite long, so careful planning is required to get the best out of a stay in Muscat

Muscat Sightseeing

City Tour Full Day

Nizwa and Jabrin Full Day

Hajar Mountains Full Day

This day tour will give you a great feel for the city and peoples of Muscat. Your day starts with a visit to the Grand Mosque which stands proudly looking out over Muscat. It is home to one of the largest Chandeliers in the world as well as the largest one piece hand stitched carpet in the world. Leaving the Grand Mosque we head off in the direction of Muttrah and the fish market. The sights and sounds of the fish market will have you yearning for more and it is with that in mind that we move straight on to the Muttrah Souk, allowing you to wander around the market with the scent of Frankincense in the air. Practise your bargaining skills before we make our way to the Oman museum and other interesting places in Muscat before we drop you off safely at your hotel.

It’s an early morning departure from your hotel as we head off towards Nizwa. Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in Oman and was the previous capital city of Oman. Home to some beautiful buildings, a fabulous silver souk and vegetable and fish market, Nizwa should definitely be on your sightseeing list. Included in this day tour is a visit to Jabrin Fort which has been called the most beautiful fort in all of Oman. This fort was still in operation up until the last century before being recently renovated. There is time to wander the souks and explore the fort. Next we treat you to a genuine Omani lunch before driving you back to Muscat and your hotel.

Join us on a day tour to Jabal Shams (Mountain of the Sun), which is home to Oman’s highest peak before we visit the Jabal Akhdar mountains. With their beautiful groves of fruit trees, flowering bushes, vines and wild juniper decorating the slopes, this is a superb area, and is Arabia’s highest region. The drive up the mountain to reach over 2000 meters above sea level is a must to experience while you’re in Oman. We first visit Wadi Bani Habib and its abandoned village, set on the side of the Mountain in an area of very lush vegetation. In the wadi, the vegetation is lush with flowering bushes on rocky floors. A dappled walk under the trees leads to the village and the atmospheric houses with their walls made from piled stones. After the Wadi we head to Diana’s Point, named after the late Princess of Wales who visited the area in the 80s. The terrain on the last section is fascinating with black rocks and gnarled shrubbery; the rocks are full of marine fossils. At the end of this tour we head back to Muscat via the Hajar Mountain route and drop you safely at your hotel. 21
