Celebrate Fiji’s 50th Independence Day
To commemorate Fiji’s 50th Independence Day, Prouds has teamed up with award-winning fashion designer Robert Kennedy who has come up with three different designs of apparel available in four different colours which blends well with Fiji’s independence theme and natural beauty. In an exclusive interview with Inbox, Kennedy reveals how he got inspired to create these unique designs. “The lead design is based on a commemorative coin that was made for the 1970 Independence Day celebrations. This is what I researched on. “It has a shield, with dove and olive branch, surmounted by a crown, the supporters being two coconut trees. Below is the motto. “Rereveka na kalou ka doka na tui”, which is interpreted, “Honour and glory to the king.” [In fact: Fear God and honour the king.] “The sceptres are inspired by the sceptres of the British kings. The sceptre with the dove is of the model of the sceptre of King Charles II (1680-´85), the sceptre with the cross imitates more or less the sceptre of Mary of Modena, the second queen of King James II (1685-´88). “The crown in its original form reminds of the crown of King Louis XV (1715-´74). Unlike the regalia of Hawaii the Fijian regalia does not seem to have really existed. Instead the royal club can be considered as the main symbol of royal Fijian power. The Royal achievement of King Cakobau is on the reverse of a commemorative one-dollar coin of 1970. “The other two designs were basically inspired by graphics from 1970. Bold typefaces were popular then along with a stylised Masi pattern. “The colour pallet I chose are all my favorite Fiji colors. Blues and turquoise’s to represent our ocean and lagoons. Greens, browns and grey’s to represent our verdant land.” Meanwhile, the four models Bulou Kalivakatoga, Lohuni Kubunavanua, Romeo Naura and Romario Wakeham - represent Fiji’s melting pot of races and have been well captured on camera by award-winning photojournalist Rob Rickman in the pristine and scenic surroundings of Sigatoka.
