BK supports education with timely donation

Despite the negative effects of natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, Burger King Fiji continues to carry out its philanthropic obligations in the country by partnering with NGOs which are making a great difference in the community.

The popular restaurant franchise which has been operating in Fiji since 2015 has been working closely with the Foundation for the Education of Needy Children in Fiji (FENC Fiji) since 2016 to support the educational needs of deprived children across the country.

All Burger King outlets in Fiji carry donation boxes to support FENC Fiji raise funds for their various activities which includes support to students in the form of scholarships covering basic school supplies such as school uniforms, shoes, bags, books and stationeries for primary and secondary school children.

Since 2016, Burger King has raised close to $70,000 for FENC Fiji through the generous donations received in the form of loose change from its customers.

On Wednesday, June 10, the company handed over additional collection of $9,000 to FENC Fiji at its flagship restaurant in Martintar, Nadi taking the total contribution to almost $80,000 within four-years of partnership.

“We are proud to have been able to collect this money on behalf of FENC Fiji. This collection is especially important as numerous families have been affected by TC Harold and by COVID-19 in the last few months,” Burger King general manager Akash Narsey said.

While accepting the donation, FENC Fiji officer-in-charge national operations, Priya Lata

said education is one of the main instruments for reducing poverty and inequality and lays a foundation for sustained economic growth.

“Through education the deprived members of our society are able to free themselves from the clutches of poverty and are able to stand up, look after their families and contribute back to the society in a positive way,” Ms Lata added.

“We at FENC Fiji simply love to see the vulnerable members of our society becoming indepen-

dent with their heads held high and their dignity fully restored.

“A big thanks to our corporate sponsors like Burger King because of whom such noble objectives can be realised as together we can make a difference.”

Established in 2010 and officially launched by Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, FENC Fiji plays a pivotal role by empowering the “poorest of the poor” children of Fiji to realise their potential through the provision of education assistance and related support.

Fiji’s biggest and longest running cancer fundraiser launched The challenging economic environment created by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic failed to dampen the spirits of the organisers of Fiji’s longest running and biggest cancer fundraising event as they have decided to carry on with the campaign this year.

The prestigious Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT) initiative which began in a humble way in 2006 has helped save thousands of lives and facilitated the much-needed patient care support for both cancer survivors and patients undergoing treatment.

Organized by the Fiji Cancer Society in partnership with the Motibhai Group, the 15th edition of the BFBMT initiative for this year was officially launched on Monday, June 22 at the Motibhai Group Suva office in Walu Bay. “These are difficult times because of COVID-19 and its global impact on businesses and families across every sector but we must not forget that the pandemic will come and go but unfortunately cancer as a disease remains in our communities and it is therefore essential to carry on with the campaign to enable the society to raise the necessary funds to operate smoothly,” Motibhai Group marketing manager Abraham Gomes said.

“That is why our organisation decided to step in and carry on the partnership as many cancer patients and survivors depend on such campaigns for the support they receive from the hardworking team at the Fiji Cancer Society,” Mr Gomes added.

He said the Fiji Cancer Society has rolled out virtual tea party packages for sale such as special hampers which contain the necessary ingredients for organisations interested in hosting their morning tea events at a smaller scale.

Echoing similar sentiments, Fiji Cancer Society chief executive officer Belinda Chan said the aspiration which drives the society is the simple vision of the nation being free from cancer.

“This is the change we want to make, and the Fiji Cancer Society uses this vision to inspire ourselves, our patients, partners, survivors, families, and communities into being proactive in combating cancer from all angles,” Ms Chan said.

“Our strategic plan for 20182022 sets out how we are harnessing the motivation and momentum from this vision and how it is translated into action across the cancer spectrum in these challenging times,” Ms Chan added.

“Cancer is a great burden to

the Fijian people, causing physical, social, and economic hardship both in the short and long term; for those who suffer from cancer directly, and those being indirectly affected such as families, colleagues and friends.

This is why the Fiji Cancer Society exists: to support those who are suffering or recovering from these hardships.

“The society recognises the magnitude of cancer in Fiji: it is the third leading cause of death, accounting for more than 10% of all deaths in 2015, and there were 1387 reported.

“When the society was established in 1993, the purpose was to engage, educate the community and facilitate services and diagnostic treatment for cancer patients. Since then, our activities have grown, to embrace a holistic approach towards patient and family care.

“The society has built strong links with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in order to provide clinical care which has been demonstrated in the past few years of collaborative patient support services.

“The society advocates for cancer control through health promotion and early detection, while the government provides the clinical services of diagnosis and medical treatment.

“It is therefore very important to carry on with initiatives such as the BFBMT in order to ensure we carry on with our day-to-day work without any hindrance.

“Our sincere appreciation to the management of the Motibhai Group for this partnership, now in its 14th year and we do look forward to building on this further because no one in Fiji needs to fight cancer alone,” Ms Chan said.

Group congratulates FDA on 50th anniversary The Motibhai Group is proud to be associated with the Fiji Dental Association (FDA) and conveys its best wishes on their 50th anniversary.

“Our association with FDA comes into play following our company gaining its master distributorship agreement with Wrigley – a world leader in chewing gum and mint production and marketing,” Motibhai Group marketing manager Abraham Gomes said.

“As many of our associates may already be aware, Wrigley has a worldwide program known as the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program (WOHP) and this is how our bonding with the FDA got stronger in a short period of time,” Mr Gomes added.

In an email to all stakeholders, FDA vicepresident Dr Leenu Maimanuku confirmed that the association has turned 50-years-old on June 29, 2020.

“The association started its journey five decades ago with a handful of dentists who

saw the need to formally register an association to be the voice of the dental profession in Fiji and to provide service to the profession ensuring that the community had access to quality dental healthcare which was kept updated through relevant professional development and peer support,” Dr Maimanuku wrote.

“Since its inception the association has undergone considerable growth, and has become a critical partner in the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage for our people.

“Currently our members provide a significantly high proportion of dental care in Fiji and it's likely that your dentist is a member of our association.

“The association looks forward to furthering its aims and objectives by working with our members and stakeholders to ensure quality dental care is available to all.”

The much awaited Fiji Times sponsored Sabeto races which has turned to be one of the biggest sporting attractions for tourists and locals alike over the years has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

A friend indeed The Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises & Development better known as FRIEND Fiji continues to assist people at grassroots level as an active agent on the ground during times of need.

In a latest initiative, FRIEND Fiji has launched a special “Food Bank” campaign to assist families which are finding it hard to make ends meet due to the negative effects of COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, June 30, the organisation received a further boost towards its humanitarian efforts after taking delivery of 100 packs of consumer items from Motibhai Group which also distributes its famous line of Friend’s Fiji Style products in the country.

While accepting the donation, FRIEND Fiji CEO Sashi Kiran thanked the management of Motibhai Group for always teaming up with them in times of need.

“Motibhai Group has been a loyal partner for many years and our bonding gets stronger during such times of hardship,” Ms Kiran said.
