Diwali a time of hope over despair...

Message from Mr Kirit Prabhudas Patel, chairman & CEO of Motibhai Group & chairman of Fiji Times Pte Limited At the outset I would like to wish all our valued customers, stakeholders, suppliers, staff and management a very happy and peace-filled Diwali. May this beautiful and vibrant festival awaken the light of joy and happiness within each of us, every day of our lives. As you all know, we have to think a bit differently about our celebration this year due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Diwali is a reminder that it is everyone's responsibility to look out for each other and see beyond gender, race, religion, age, abilities and status and do what is right and more so during the times when the whole world has been going through very challenging circumstances since the outbreak of Coronavirus. I know COVID-19 effects have been difficult for Fijians of all faiths in terms of job losses, being away from families’ etcetera as we often look to our religion to find comfort in times of contention and suffering.

What the festival of lights really stands for today is a reaffirmation of hope, a renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill – which lessons are of special importance this Diwali season, as there are many who have been displaced and are suffering in the wake of outbreak of COVID-19. I request those fortunate enough to be spared to join hands to help our fellow Fijians. Together, we can overcome this challenge, emerge stronger and truly observe the Diwali spirit of love

and kindness that Lord Rama sought to inspire in his life. We have experienced great challenges and difficult times this year - the loss and suffering visited upon us by Tropical Cyclone Harold in early April along with this COVID-19, but we are united through adversity and triumph. The story of Diwali highlights, family unity, togetherness, good values and loving one another and hope over despair. Let us have faith in ourselves as a people, because we Fijians have shown

that we can triumph over any adversity, meet any challenge, and chart the most ambitious course for our future. These traits are what make a complete, fulfilling life; and Diwali gives an opportunity to reiterate the importance of treating our people with the respect, love and compassion that they deserve by rewinding the journey of Lord Rama that began from a noble, selfless and obedient honour of his father’s promise. Given the times we all are in, let’s take this Diwali as an opportunity to renew the spirit of hope, courage and compassion that has brought us to where we stand today. Let us care for those who are less fortunate, let us protect those who are vulnerable, let us love and understand each other, and let us always uphold the high moral character that defines us as Fijians. May God Bless each and every one, and may the festival of lights bring each one of us joy and happiness today and always. Have a safe and a blessed Diwali.
