In 1922, the announcement was made: J. Graham Brown, millionaire lumberman and capitalist, would build a $4 million, 15-story hotel downtown Louisville, with St. Louis architect Preston J. Bradshaw as its designer. David Lloyd George, former Prime Minister of Great Britain, visited the city just before The Brown opened and became the first person to sign the guest register. The hotel quickly became the city’s business and social center, bringing a new energy to downtown. Soon, a lavish theater, a church and a large medical and professional building opened near the hotel. In 1925, Brown built the Brown Office Building just east of the hotel, which included the recently refurbished Brown Theatre. These were memorable years. Lily Pons, while playing at the Brown Theatre, let her pet lion cub roam free in her suite. Queen Marie of Romania visited in 1926 and was entertained in the Crystal Ballroom, complete with red carpet and a gold throne on a dais. Among the well-known patrons of The Brown have been the Duke of Windsor, Harry Truman, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, Gene Autry, Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Carter, Julie Andrews, Billy Graham, George Strait, Barack Obama and Diana Ross. Yet for all its glamour, its owner’s faith, and its employees’ hard work, The Brown was not an immediate financial success. Prohibition was in effect from the time it opened until 1933, and the Depression of the Thirties stalled Graham Brown’s businesses as it did nearly everyone’s. In 1931, Brown defaulted on the loan that had financed the hotel, and the bank threatened to foreclose. Financing was rearranged and Brown kept the hotel, but not without painful steps, including a humble appeal to employees to work temporarily without pay. In January 1937, the Ohio River rose, invading Louisville. Nearly a thousand people from low-lying areas sought refuge in the hotel and found themselves stranded for ten days. A witness recalled. “We were rowing down Broadway and there was The Brown Hotel. The doors were open and the place was filled with water so we just rowed our boat in one door, went through the lobby and rowed out another.” Spirits remained high, however. Charcoal grills in make-shift kitchens fed the multitudes and bucket brigades carried water up the 15 flights of Boom time for The stairs to flush toilets. During Brown began with the flood, the bell captain World War II. Soldiers caught a fish in the from Fort Knox and Louisville second floor lobby. residents sought relief at The Brown from the anxieties of war. A bell captain remembered, “Two or three trains a day would come from Ft. Knox…soldiers lined up for hours waiting for a room.” A bartender noted “…Everybody had more money than they had ever seen before. Business was booming.” Many celebrities first made a name for themselves at The Brown Hotel, including George Gobel, Gene Krupa, Clyde McCoy, Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. In the late forties, following the trend of cities across the country, Louisville endorsed construction of anexpressway system designed to bring more people downtown. Instead, the expressways, which opened in the late fifties, made the surrounding farmland more accessible and appealing to developers, and homeowners and businesses began the exodus to suburbia.

At the end of February, 1971, two years after its builder had died, The Brown closed as a hotel. Later that year, the Jefferson County Board of Education purchased the hotel for its Brown Education Center. The inventive use of The Brown as a school proved unworkable. By the next decade, The Brown sat empty. During 1980, the “Broadway Group,” was formed, and acquired The Brown. Renovation began in 1983 and Hilton Hotels was selected as the management company. In 1990, the Camberley Hotel Company assumed management of the hotel and restored it to its original splendor. In 2006, 1859 Historic Hotels purchased the hotel. Today, The Brown remains a cornerstone in downtown Louisville, a tribute to its heritage with a reputation for exemplary food and superior service.

What is your ideal date night? Dinner at a unique restaurant with good wine then a walk through our favorite Louisville neighborhoods & shops. What is your favorite meal on the hotel’s menu? Although I should probably say The Hot Brown... our short rib with collard green risotto is by far my favorite. What’s your most memorable wedding moment at the hotel? During the garland exchange of my first Indian wedding, the FOB asked me to stand by him (he knew it was my first Indian wedding, so he wanted me to see everything). I felt so honored to be asked to join in such a beautiful ceremony. Tell us one thing people do not know about you. As a two-year-old flower girl, I tripped down the aisle at my cousin’s wedding. This is still the single most memorable event of that wedding to all of my family. Have you read a life changing book and what was it? A collection of quotes called “How to be an Up Person in a Down World.” It was a gift from my mom as a teen and I flip through it often to find inspiration, laughter, and perspective. What is the best part of your job? Playing a part in one of the most important days in the lives of two families joining together is an absolute pleasure! Almost every girl dreams about this day her whole life and I get to see the happiness it brings.

Tell us about your engagement. My fiancé proposed on Halloween this past year (so technically my new favorite holiday should be Halloween!). We had a pumpkin carving competition, which I thought was a little unfair, since my future mother-in-law is an art teacher. He carved a proposal scene into his pumpkin and during the reveal, he got on one knee and asked me to marry him! Share with us some plans about your wedding: We are going to be married at the Cathedral of the Assumption in February of 2015 with the reception in the Crystal Ballroom at The Brown Hotel! The first time I saw the ballroom, I knew this was where I would celebrate my wedding.

HISTORY SEELBACH

timeless elegance

of the

Representing immigrant brothers Louis and Otto Seelbach’s version of the American dream, Louisville’s Grand Hotel was built in 1905. The hotel is an example of the lavish turn-of-the century Beaux- Arts Baroque architectural style. Names of celebrities and dignitaries fill the guest registry. Presidents’ William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton have been guests at The Seelbach. W.J. Dodd of Louisville and F.M. Andrews of Dayton, Ohio designed the Seelbach. The richly decorated lobby combined marbles from Italy, Vermont and Switzerland along with mahogany and bronze in the classic Renaissance style including a vaulted dome of 800 glass panes. Arthur Thomas, the most famous Indian painter in the world, was commissioned to decorate the lobby with huge mural paintings of pioneer scenes from Kentucky history. In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald immortalized the hotel in his novel, The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald referred to The Seelbach when his characters, Tom Buchanan and Daisy, were married. The Rathskeller, the only room of its kind in the world, is a work of art crafted entirely of Rookwood Pottery. The ceramic tiles are from the famous Rookwood Pottery Company of Cincinnati that operated from 1881 to WWII. Rookwood pelicans, a leather ceiling painted with the zodiac and scenes of Rhineland splendor surround you in this Medieval-looking room. The Oakroom, with hand-carved oak colonnades and glittering chandeliers, was originally a gentleman’s billiard parlor. Located on the Mezzanine level, it underwent a half a million-dollar restoration in 1996 and now serves, as Kentucky’s only 5 Diamond restaurant. Louis Seelbach died in 1925, and in 1929 Otto Seelbach retired, and died 4 years later. The Seelbach Hotel Company disbanded with his retirement and the last Seelbach left the hotels’ management. Subsequent owners remodeled the hotel, and until 1968 the hotel turned a profit. By July, loss of revenue forced The Seelbach to close. In 1978, new owners H.G. Whittenberg, Jr., construction magnate and Roger Davis, actor, began renovations with financial backing from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. The cost was more than $28 million. In April 1990, The Seelbach was sold to Medallion Hotels, Inc. of New York, which added the 18,500 sq. ft. 5.6 milliondollar conference center in 1995. Meristar Hotels and Resorts purchased The Seelbach in 1998, began a seven million-dollar restoration process of all guestrooms and placed it under the Hilton flag.

The lobby looks today much as it did to the 25,000 people that filed through the hotel on opening day back in 1905, thanks entirely to Mr. Roger Davis. Mr. Davis peeled away 16 coats of paint, 6 layers of wallpaper and over 40 years of changes and additions, to return the lobby to its original resplendent grandeur. The Seelbach brothers spared no expense in decorating their grand hotel, and the lobby is a perfect example. They selected the finest marbles from all over the world. Importing the green and white marble for the walls from Italy and the rose marble from Switzerland. The massive gray columns were covered in the finest Vermont marble and banded in French bronze. They had the entire grill work and railings fabricated in France and capped with West Indian mahogany. In keeping with this fine craftsmanship, Mr. Davis removed the terrazzo floor, in the 1950s, and replaced it with a snow white Alabama marble. If you stand in the lobby and look up one sees the beautiful skylight with its 800 individual panes of beveled glass. Because Mr. Davis was unable to reopen the skylight; he purchased and hung the two massive, five tiered bronze and crystal chandeliers, which originally hung in The Phoenix hotel in Lexington. (Ironically, this hotel was run for many years by the third Seelbach brother, Charles.) Surrounding the top of the lobby are the beautiful murals by Arthur Thomas depicting scenes from Kentucky’s history.

How is it working with your husband and how long have you been married? My Husband is Patrick Roney, the Chef de Cuisine of The Oakroom in the Seelbach Hilton. We started working professionally together after we married in April 2007 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Patrick was working as a Private Chef on Yachts, which made it extremely hard to be together when he spent most of his time in other Countries. When we married, I resigned from my job in Membership Sales at a Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida and went to work on the yachts with Patrick. We traveled and worked together for 5 years, as we call it our “5 Year Honeymoon”. In 2012 we decided to settled down on solid land. We laid down our roots in Louisville where we both accepted positions at the Seelbach Hilton!
