August 2010

On July 25th over 300 dedicated volunteers were honored and thanked at our Volunteer Recognition Reception held at the Thursday Club in La Cañada. This event celebrates the work and the dedication and commitment of outstanding volunteers who serve in a variety of ways to further the mission of San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. Special awards were presented during the program. Recipients of the Loyal Order of the Bent Nail, who all spent at least 200 construction hours on site at Kenwood and/or Sherman, included Joan Bouchard, Mike Brander, Harry Curley, Reverend Gregory Douglass, Wally Drake, John Duxbury, Adrian Krag, Fran Maliszewski and Mike Morales. Board member Paul McAnnally-Linz presented the Bent Nail awards. There are many volunteers who serve equal amounts of time (or more!) on committees, fundraising, and volunteering at the ReStore and/or office, earning them the Loyal Order of the Helping Hands award. This year’s recipients were Anne Bockenkamp, Reverend Gregory Douglass, Ken Hunt, Alan Ikuta (posthumously), the Islamic Congregation of La Cañada Flintridge, Sharyn Delahousie Lewis, Monrovia’s Mayor Mary Ann Lutz, Paul McAnnallyLinz, Sona Mooradian, Jim Mullen, husbandand-wife team Jefferson Palmer & photo by Benjamin Simpson

supervision, of course,” and both ladies stated, “We even lay pipes!” Joan stated that she made sure all tools were in order and that the shed was organized. She also kept all paint supplies in order. I asked Joan and Fran what they would like to convey to men and women seeking volunteer work. They responded, “Habitat is accommodating to everyone. If you want to learn, you’ll be taught. All you need is a willingness to want to help. You don’t need to be a professional of any sort, and ages range from teens to seniors. Age is not a factor, except that no one under 16 is allowed on active build sites for safety reasons. Sixteen and seventeen-yearJoan Bouchard receiving the Bent Nail Award for her 714 old volunteers are required to have 1:1 adult volunteer hours with Habitat for Humanity supervision while working on a build.” Congratulations to these trailblazers! because her own family could have benefited from an affordable Habitat home. Fran is involved in various charities, but she finds the satisfaction that one receives from Habitat is priceless. She said, “I am now financially stable, and I want to give back what I’ve received.” She’s also discovered that people who volunteer are nice to be around! Both ladies also agreed that seeing the reaction of the recipients during the dedication ceremonies is a pure miracle. Fran stressed, “You cannot put a monetary value to the endless rewards one receives by merely volunteering!” Joan and Fran provided most of their volunteer hours at the Kenwood Build in Glendale which took nearly two and a half years to complete. I asked what their responsibilities consisted of, and they humorously responded, “We were domestic engineers!” This is the name that was given to these ladies by the gentlemen who worked side-by-side with them. Fran stated that she plastered holes in the wall, sealed tiles, and kept the site quite clean. She acknowledged that she is quite structured and organized and enjoys helping to keep the build site safe and clean. She was also proud to announce, “I pulled electrical wire-- under constant

Pam Remai, Stefanie Rico, David Sieving, Elaine Wilkerson and Peter Zovak. Board President Jan Berentsen presented these awards. Ljiljana Grozdanic received a Special Service Award to honor her inspirational work in coordinating a successful fundraising event, “Harvest for Habitat,” last October. Those who have supported SGV Habitat for Humanity year after year and have taken on a leadership roles in fund development or on committees were recognized with the Golden Heart award. This year’s recipients were Reverend James Anderson, Jan Berentsen, Darlene Hubanks, Sue Koury and Nina Perry. Board member Jay Harvill presented the awards. The Ace Cain Humanitarian Award, named in honor of our affiliate founder, is given to someone who has provided longterm, transformational service, commitment and leadership. We are proud to announce that this year’s recipient is Joan McCarthy who has supported SGV Habitat for Humanity continuously for the past seven years in her role as The Walt Disney Company’s head of Community Relations in the Los Angeles area. Joan and Executive Director, Dr. Sonja Yates, shared the story of how Disney and Habitat have partnered in the past as well as their vision for funding future builds. The afternoon concluded with a deeply moving documentary of the Kenwood build created by Pam Remai and her husband Jefferson Palmer, who took photos of the Kenwood build from start to finish. This extraordinary photo documentary will be highlighted in the October issue of the Habitat Builder. photo by Benjamin Simpson

The day was filled with a spirit of good will, sharing and appreciation. As a special treat, Tom Bunn, the affiliate’s pro bono attorney, shared his musical talent on the piano. The Quiroz family from our Sherman build in Monrovia and the Menjivar family from our Kenwood build in Glendale shared both humorous and touching stories of how their lives have been transformed since moving into their Habitat homes. Good food, great music and beautiful grounds provided the perfect atmosphere for volunteers to reconnect with each other and the families they served. Special thanks go to local photographer Benjamin Simpson who donated his time and talent to capture precious moments at the event and to David Lazier at Nelson Nameplates and Bill Anderson, our ReStore manager, who made the recognition plaques for the honorees. Afterwards, it was finally my opportunity to actually talk with the attendees and to thank those who helped me pull off this year’s Volunteer Recognition Reception. I truly couldn’t have done it without Connie Alamdari and the Ladies of Guadalupe, Ivonne Contreras, Jim Davis, Cheryl Torricelli, Girl Scout Cadet Troop #125-6 and, most of all, Carol Martin. Thank you! photo by Benjamin Simpson
