Rebuilding Together

San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity Rises to Meet the Challenge After Devastation

In the aftermath of recent wind and fire damage, our community is grappling with immense loss. Families have been displaced, homes destroyed, and the path to recovery feels overwhelming. Amid this devastation, SGV Habitat for Humanity is stepping up to lead the charge in rebuilding efforts, offering hope and lasting solutions to those affected

To kickstart these efforts, SGV Habitat has developed a proactive plan of action This includes a call for community members to join the rebuilding process when it is safe to do so. Volunteers will play a vital role in restoring both homes and hope for families impacted by the disaster. Additionally, the organization has launched ReBUILD LA™, a wildfire recovery campaign. The ReBUILD LA™ Wildfire Recovery campaign was established to assist uninsured, underinsured, and low-income families affected by wildfires. The campaign focuses on providing assistance in rebuilding, relocating and repairing homes to ensure families have safe, stable housing

Ways YOU Can Help

Donations to the ReBUILD LA® campaign will:

Help those who have lost everything rebuild or relocate, ensuring they have a safe place to call home.

Tragically, the disaster has struck close to home for Habitat, with the loss of one Habitat-built home and homes of preservation partners. The organization remains unwavering in its commitment to these families, working diligently to determine the next steps in their rebuilding journey.

In the coming weeks, SGV Habitat will focus on gathering the critical resources needed to make a difference construction materials, volunteer teams, and additional funding With your help we will ReBUILDLA and bring the community together in support of those impacted by last month’s catastrophic events

“Our mission is to be a steadfast partner in helping affected communities recover,” said Bryan Wong, CEO of SGV Habitat.

“But we can’t do it alone. Support from community partners, donors, and volunteers is essential to make this vision a reality.”

For those eager to help, there are multiple ways to get involved. Contributions to the ReBUILD LA™ fund will directly aid recovery efforts, while signing up for the volunteer interest list ensures that community members can play an active role in rebuilding when the time comes.

Offer assistance to vulnerable survivors who have been left without options to afford housing.

UPDATE: Dreams Being Built in Azusa and El Sereno

Angeleno

Exciting progress is happening at the Angeleno site in Azusa! The roofing siding, windows, and doors have been installed. Inside, crews are hard at wor putting in electrical, plumbing, fire sprinkler, and mechanical systems. Onc these inspections are completed, we’ll move into the finish-out phase beginning with insulation and drywall hanging. Soon these 4 homes will b ready for homeownership

El Sereno

Work in El Sereno continues and we are nearing the completion of three mor homes The El Sereno project encompasses several properties that wer formerly owned by Caltrans Our plan is to renovate and/or build single-family homes that fit both the character and density of the neighborhood and the incomes of working people. By the end of February we plan to complete 5 home renovations – enabling 5 households to achieve their dreams of homeownership.

Once these homes are complete, we will begin work on the next group of homes SGV Habitat recently purchased our 17th property in the El Sereno neighborhood with plans to offer over 25 opportunities for first-time homebuyers to purchase affordable homes

SGV Habitat sells affordable homes to low-income, first-time homebuyers to help them achieve the American dream of homeownership Approved homeowners, at time of purchase, qualify for a monthly housing payment equal to no more than 30% of their gross monthly income Learn more about homeownership at sgvhabitat org

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue building homes, communities and hope locally.

SGV Habitat Attends Advocacy Days in Sacramento

In January our CEO Bryan Wong joined Erin Rank, CEO of Habitat LA, to speak at Habitat for Humanity Advocacy Days in Sacramento Together, they highlighted the critical need for unity in the face of recent local fires, sharing updates on the devastating impact and emphasizing how California can rally together to support rebuild efforts

Advocacy Days is a powerful annual gathering where local Habitat affiliates come together to discuss the urgent need for affordable homeownership across California From housing solutions to disaster recovery, our collective voice ensures that every family has a safe and stable place to call home.

Volunteer Spotlight: Mariana Garate

This month, we’re proud to highlight Mariana Garate, a retired school principal and dedicated Habitat volunteer who has generously contributed nearly 190 hours of her time since January 2023. Her unwavering commitment and passion have made a meaningful impact across multiple projects, including the Olive home, the Nubia Blitz Build, the El Sereno site, and various home preservation initiatives.

Reflecting on her experience, Mariana shared:
