CGLL History & 2022 Update The Beginning…

College Glen Little League was founded in 1974. Prior to that, we were part of American River Little League. In the fall of 1974, we received our charter from Williamsport, PA, home of Little League Baseball, Inc. College Glen Little League serves the area bound by Howe Avenue to the west, the American River to the north, Bradshaw Road to the east and Folsom Boulevard to the south.

Under the direction of our first president, Merle Shields, we developed our complex on land belonging to the Sacramento Unified School District. On December 1, 1974, we obtained a lease on the land, which is now owned by the Sacramento City Parks and Recreation Department. Until our complex and diamonds were completed in 1975, the first of our inaugural season games were played on local school fields.

The Sacramento City Parks and Recreation Department gave us permission to use the fields for Farm and Pee Wee Division play and allowed us to alter the fields for better playing conditions.

A scorekeeper booth and bleachers were added to the Farm field and benches for the players were added to the Pee Wee field.

Fast Forward...

The 2022 season begins by recognizing the accomplishments of the 2021 Major (10-12) AllStars for winning the District 5 Championship...the first in CG history in 30+ years. They also made it to the Section Finals and from that team, only 3 players aged out of the division. After 4 years, the new farm field is game ready and will feature a full schedule of regular season farm games this year. Additionally, the league has purchased a new ICEE machine for the snack bar, so we are ready for our 48th season is to be our best yet!

2022 CGLL President There is something in the air. And I don’t mean COVID. Although, as I enter my second year as President, we are in our 3rd year of that. No, what I mean, is that CGLL is back to traditional capacity in terms of player registrations! So, with all my heart – I welcome back everyone who took a “gap year” and welcome in everyone who is just starting out in our CGLL family. Besides players, also returning this year, after a 2-year hiatus, is our Opening Day Parade! I feel we’re going to have a great year!

For those not in the know, our CGLL Major All-Stars won the District 5 title last year, giving Fair OaksOrangevale their only championship loss across the four levels of play. It was College Glen’s first D5 Championship since 1990 – and worth the wait. Our All-Stars battled all the way to the Section Tournament Final, only to be beaten by North Natomas. Still, a remarkable achievement for a League whose Major Division consisted of two teams and 25 players. Please turn to Page 36 of this program for their special recognition.

We are also excited to bring two new things to CGLL this year: A new ICEE machine to replace the one that served sugar to our kids for 20+ years. And, at long last, the Grand Opening of our long-awaited Farm Field. Many volunteers assisted in its creation. I won’t attempt to name them all for fear of forgetting someone, but a heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who helped. And a special thanks to our Field Co-Directors, Ray Blaszczynski and Steve Landman, who were the driving forces over the last two years. Now we’ll need to see if we can keep those Farm kids focused on baseball and not the dogs in the park behind them.

Let’s go out and build on the successes of 2021 and have a great 2022 season! Play Ball!

Complex Status Lighting Systems While we have been lucky with the baseball weather leading up to the season, we know that we need the rain and that it has the potential to impact us during the season.

For those of you who are new to CGLL, and as a reminder for everyone, we use a stop light color system to communicate changes to the complex based on weather and field conditions.

We will post these on our website as well as Facebook as early as possible and typically by 3pm weeknight game days.

Below are the three examples of the lights we use at CGLL.

GREEN LIGHT: No Restrictions YELLOW LIGHT: Restricted Use

RED LIGHT: Entire Complex is Closed

* Please note that there might be days where the complex will be open, games start, and then we have to close due to weather or field conditions changing.
