The aims of the Stokes/Porwoll Administration were leadership and scholarship, health and safety, and technology.

Leadership and Scholarship • Facilitate and stimulate the support for the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Reading and Writing Center.

• Establish a Transfer Student Leadership Institute to help acclimate the population of transfer students to our FSU Community.

• Revitalize and promote student involvement in the College Leadership Councils.

• Ensure monthly student body town hall meetings.

• Work to restructure grading scales to remove “minus” grades.

Health and Safety

• Eliminate the towel fee at the Leach.

• Launch Disabled Access Awareness campaign to ensure an enticing campus experience for all Seminoles.

• Partner with StarMetro to restructure the bus routes in an effort to increase efficiency.

Technology

• Develop a key-chain friendly Student ID to supplement the FSU Card.

• Enhance the FSU Mobile Application to connect students with S.A.F.E. Transportation such as the S.A.F.E. Bus and the NoleCab. • Create a Got Issues module for Blackboard as an avenue for students to give feedback to SGA.

The Senate president is responsible for residing over weekly senate sessions. The individual is selected to serve for one-year term. The Senate president maintains order in senate chambers, keeps decorum, and appoints senators to committees. The senate president is the official voice when dealing with A&S fees with the administration.

The Senate pro tempore acts as the residing officer over senate hearings if the president is unable to do so. The Senate pro tempore chairs the Rule of Calendar Committee, which oversees Bills, Resolutions and approving senator absences. Additionally, the Senate pro tempore maintains relations with COGS and assists senators with writing Bills and Resolutions.

The Congress of Graduate Students (COGS) is the official representative body of all post-baccalaureate special, masters, specialist, professional, and doctoral students at Florida State.

In accordance to the Student Government Constitution, COGS is a funding body of the Student Government Association and has been granted its own set of administrative rules and procedures. In other words, the COGS assembly is solely responsible for allocating all of the A&S fees it receives from graduate students each year.

During the fall semester of each year, graduate students vote for COGS representatives from all sixteen colleges and schools. Seats in the COGS assembly are allocated based on the amount of enrolled students in each college or school. The term for a COGS representative is one year and vacant seats can be filled through the petition process.

Currently, the largest account that COGS administers is Support Grant Lines. These grants help hundreds of graduate students each year travel to academic conferences, present their research, and conduct their research domestically and abroad. Aside from grants, COGS administers funds to hundreds of recognized graduate student organizations (RSOs). Graduate RSOs provide essential activities and services to students of similar interests, goals, and academic backgrounds.

There are over 550 Recognized Student Organizations, also known as RSOs, at Florida State University. Recognized Student Organizations not funded by the annual budget or any other funding board or committee shall be eligible to receive funds from the two fund distribution committees.

The distribution committees are: the Resources

for Travel Allocations Committee (RTAC), which funds in the expense category for travel; and the Programming Allocations Committee (PAC), which funds in the food, contractual services, and (as necessary) expense (excluding travel) categories.

The committees meet on a weekly basis for both fall and spring semesters.

The chairs will announce the meeting time and location by the end of the first week of classes.

Organizations may request up to $200 at the beginning of the fall semester for general organizational needs if their organization received and spent A&S funds in the prior fiscal year.

Judicial Branch Chief Justice and Justices 23

CHIEF JUSTICE AND JUSTICES Judicial Branch The Judicial Branch decides alleged violations of the Student Body Constitution and Statutes. It includes the Supreme Court and the University Defender, a Law student the Chief Justice appoints to represent students appearing before the Student Conduct Review Board or the Supreme Court.

The Student Conduct Review Board, a panel of students, hears cases alleging violations of the Student Conduct code. The Review Board is selected and organized

by Student Rights and Responsibilities in the Dean of Students office.

The Student Body President appoints justices from among second- and third-year students at FSU’s College of Law. The Chief Justice appoints the Clerk of the Court, who can be any student, and the Florida State University Elections Commission, which is comprised of five students at FSU’s College of Law.

Asian American Student Union The Asian Student Union was founded in 1996 by co-founders Faye Hunt and Rich Sealy due to the growing Asian and Asian American student body. The agency had transitioned to use the name Asian American Student Union during the 2006-2007 academic term under the leadership of former AASU Director, Zach Heng.

Through the past few years, the Asian American Student Union has expanded to represent eight other Asian cultural organizations, and increased membership to the hundreds. AASU is involved in and hosts multiple events which create a stronger bond among FSU students by spreading knowledge and appreciation of Asian culture, as well as engaging the campus at The Florida State University on current important AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) issues.

Under the leadership of AASU Director Maryann Mina and AASU Assistant Director Eric Cheung, the Asian American Student Union set off to create a more interactive environment between the agency and their eight affiliated cultural groups, emphasizing the importance of AASU as support to help foster the growth of these organizations. Furthermore, this academic year was the first time ever that members will attend the ECAASU (East Coast Asian American Student Union) Conference, which brought together over 1000 students from across the nation together to increase communication and provide mutual support in regards to AAPI issues.

The Spring semester also witnessed the launch of AASU’s new mentorship network called VIP (Volunteer Involvement Program). Any student may apply to learn about each leadership position within the agency to better facilitate the growth of career skills and transitioning into an executive board.

Black Student Union

Black Student Union Our mission here at The Black Student Union is to be a Student Government Agency that offers black students a form of identity and a social life.

BSU functions as a vehicle of communication to the faculty and administration of the Florida State University.

The Black Student Union seeks to develop unity among black students so that jointly and strongly they can express concerns and problems faced on campus.

BSU is an organization at Florida State University that addresses those issues that affect African-American students in a university setting.

The Black Student Union has been a mainstay at Florida State University since its conception in 1968.

The Black Student Union creates an atmosphere of self respect and gives minorities on campus an opportunity to network and explore all of the different options that Florida State University has to offer.

Hispanic Latino Student Union

Hispanic Latino Student Union The Hispanic/Latino Student Union shall serve as an institution dedicated to gathering information in regards to trends, necessities and achievements of the Hispanic/Latino community.

It shall serve as a nucleus for a network with other national institutes and organizations to improve the opportunities and living conditions of the Hispanic/ Latino community. The Hispanic/Latino Student Union will function as an educational and cultural learning instrument for students, faculty and staff.

The agency shall provide a centralized coordination of resources and services for the Hispanic/Latino community. It shall be open and accessible to everyone, thus providing a liaison between Florida State University and the Tallahassee community.

Pride Student Union

Pride Student Union Pride Student Union had a number of accomplishments in the 2012-2013 school year.

• We promoted acceptance and inclusivity on the FSU campus (regardless of gender or sexual identity).

• We ran FSU’s LGBTQ+ Resource Center (Union Room A-211) which is open 10:00AM-7:00PM Monday through Friday. This maintains a safe space where all students are welcome to study and socialize throughout their work week.

• We focused on educating our members and everyone at the FSU campus on LGBTQ+ stereotypes and issues of discrimination within and around our community.

• During the fall semester Pride facilitated an educational panel on growing inclusivity in religious communities which featured representatives from a local church, Chabad on campus, the Buddhist Student Union, and the Muslim Student Association. All panelists explained how and why their faith calls them to love and embrace the LGBTQ+ community.

• Pride facilitated a guided but open forum on discrimination within LGBTQ+ communities, entitled Divided & Conquered: Issues in the Community, which explored issues of sexism, racism, transphobia, misogyny, biphobia, ablism, etc. during the fall.

• Pride held a biweekly center event called Queer Womyn’s Night to provide a safe space for women who do not subscribe to heteronormativity and/or gender stereotypes to come together socially and, on occasion, for specially themed events or discussions.

For some members it was important to offer social gatherings throughout the year and many wanted the chance to learn more about others’ coming out experiences. Furthermore, through fostering new partnerships and continuing past collaborations, we’ve been able to increase awareness, education and support for progress to have a safe and inclusive campus.

Pride Student Union journey. In recognition of that journey we kick off each fall with a week full of events surrounding National Coming Out Day. A traditional favorite is the emotionally charged Speak Out where students one at a time tell their coming out stories. The beauty surrounding this is even though everyone is from different cultures and backgrounds, we identify with and support each other to where everyone can walk away knowing they’re great as who they are and people are there to support them. • Queer People of Color (QPOC) night is a biweekly identity awareness group that serves to create a safe and inviting space for self-identified queer people of color to talk, decolonize our minds, dismantle oppressive systems through consciousness raising and grow together. This group serves as a way to openly engage in dialogues around what it means to be both queer and a person of color. The intersection of race and sexual identity is openly addressed through dialogues, media, and informal conversations. QPOC ultimately serves as an outlet for queer people of color to come together several times a semester and develop a strong community at FSU. QPOC is held Thursday evenings in the LGBTQ Resource Center.

Women Student Union

The Women Student Union is one of the Student Government agencies that was created to bring awareness to the Florida State University community of women’s rights and issues within society. The Women Student Union values struggles of the past, asserts rights in the present, and celebrates aspirations for the future. The Women Student Union fosters the growth of women personally, professionally, and politically. The WSU celebrates the power existing within every woman to promote self-autonomy, denounce all limitations, educate on systems of oppression, and advocate inclusivity within a diverse community. WSU facilitates a network among organizations, departments, and services to embrace, engage, and empower.

Women have a special place in the history of Florida State University. The Women Student Union recognizes the importance to strengthen relationships across campus with students, faculty, staff, administration, and alumnae. Membership has increased and diversified. The Women Student Union plans programs and activities such as general body meetings and seminars that reach out to women and provide a connection for students to faculty, staff, administration, and alumnae. The organization hopes to empower women in the community.

With the development of the Organization of Women Leaders, support and empowerment is provided for female student leaders and womencentered organizations through monthly coffee talks. There have been drastic improvements to the Women’s Center location in Union Room 323 and more opportunities for involvement and leadership development through utilizing committees. The Women Student Union is open and accessible to every student at Florida State University.

In October 2012, statutes were revised to better represent the organization’s mission and vision. The Women Student Union was originally known as the Women’s Center. This name change has allowed for more consistency and congruency with other Student Government agencies. With the name of Women’s Center, there was

the preconceived notion of there only being one place for women’s concerns.

However, the Women Student Union recognizes the importance of women’s issues everywhere on campus and within the community.

The Women Student Union was charged with the task of leading the first student initiated Women’s History Month for March 2013. 2013 Women’s History Month, “Innovation Through Imagination: FSU Women Throughout the Years,” was the culmination of this work and collaboration on campus. The month of events were planned to speak

to every woman—and every person— associated with Florida State University.

In March, the programming will reflect the multi-faceted FSU Woman, a woman who strives academically and professionally, serves her communities, and understands the importance of building healthy and meaningful relationships. For more information on the month of events, see women.fsu.edu.

The Senior Class Council works on projects such as the Senior Class gift and graduation. Elected each Spring, the Council is headed by a Senior Class President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Four Seniors at-Large are appointed.

Each year the Senior Class leaves the University with a gift that is unique to the Senior Class and exerts Seminole spirit and pride.

The Senior Class Gift is an opportunity for graduating seniors to make a contribution to a special project on campus. This could be a campus beautification project, an academic scholarship, or any number of other worthwhile causes at Florida State. The point is to create a lasting and visible legacy for our class.

with a unit on spring weather. The children experimented with and explored the water cycle. They learned words such as evaporation, condensation, and water vapor. We also learned the names of different types of clouds.

March went out like a lamb with a study of baby animals such as lambs, bunnies, chicks, and ducklings. The children learned about the holiday,

S.A.F.E. Connection

S.A.F.E. Connection transports students for free. Students on campus are served through an escort service. Students who are under the influence of alcohol, or who are off campus, can take advantage of the Night Nole to get back to campus. S.A.F.E Connection also promotes awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, S.A.F.E. Connection is an affiliated project with the FSU Police Department. The project promotes education, activities and

programs concerning crime prevention and safety to the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Florida State University.

The S.A.F.E Connection Board of Directors is comprised of the Student Body President or his/her designee, the Senate President or his/her designee, the FSU Public Safety Director, the Student Campus Security Advisor, the SGA Advisor, one Senator elected by the Senate, the Director of S.A.F.E. Connection, and the Assistant Director of S.A.F.E. Connection.

First Responder Unit

The FSU First Responder Unit (the Unit), an affiliated project of the FSU Student Government Association, University Health Services, the FSU Police Department, and the Division of Student Affairs, serves as a basic life support quick response unit to the FSU community. The unit provides care as outlined by the medical protocol manual approved by the Medical Director of University Health Services and the Coordinator of the Emergency Medical Response Program. Services are provided at requested special events, intramural games, home football pre-game tailgating, FSU baseball games, or as dispatched by FSUPD, Leon County EMS, or requested through the First Responders Supervisor’s office on a day-to-day basis. By responding to calls on campus, the unit is able to better direct the use of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) by serving as the first link in the prehospital care system. By referring students to appropriate medical care, as not all require the service of an ambulance, the unit not only saves those students money and stress, but also reduces the strain on local public safety resources. It is our mission to make a difference through service to our fellow students and other members of the FSU community in a medical capacity at no charge. Thus our motto, “students serving students,” appropriately defines our goals as an Emergency Response Unit.

in addition to the normal response already provided by the FSU Police Department and the county 911 system. Previously, we operated out of the FSU Police Department during the entirety of our evening shift hours.

However, this year, our on-campus crew is stationed within our new office within The Wellness Center in addition to the crew station out at the RecSports Plex. In addition to our regular response hours, the unit is on standby at many special events each year.

Over the year, the unit was requested for 126 special events and served the entire FSU community. It served students and alumni attending FSU football and baseball games, numerous registered student organizations, fraternities, and sororities at various events, and Student Government Association at Homecoming events.

Through the College of Human Sciences, many students take the First Responder course and filter into the unit once they pass the exams and field practical evaluations. This program not only benefits the students on campus by providing care, but it also offers hands-on experience for those students with a desire to enter the medical field. All unit members, including those who have already completed the course and practical evaluations, are required to attend monthly training meetings to refresh the important skills used routinely by the unit.

Through its limited funding, the First Responder Unit has continued to grow with respect to members, number of students

served, number of requests for medical staff assistance on campus, in addition to our strengthening connections with other campus entities. This expansion earned the First Responder Unit the University’s Artes Award and Advisor of the Year Award in 2008.

The First Responder Unit consists of approximately 70 volunteer members, including students in our field training course, who are full time FSU students.

These members volunteer for a minimum of one four-hour shift a week in which they serve their fellow students if injury or illness is to occur. The Executive Board, which consists of four very dedicated unit members, serves to direct the function of the unit in coordination with the unit advisors.

The dedication of the unit membership is demonstrated by the hours of volunteer service committed to the university. The unit responded to 472 calls on campus, saving students thousands of dollars by offering medical care at no charge. Since the unit’s creation in 2002, the number of medical calls we have responded to has increased each year, and we are sure to show such improvement again at the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year.

Being an active part of Student Government has allowed our unit to expand and improve in our operation. We greatly appreciate the continuous support received from SGA and are looking forward to all the successful semesters to come.

The SGA Photo Journal captures photos of events sponsored by the RSOs and provides the student groups a limited number of free copies and the opportunity to have more printed simply by providing more paper. The mission of the Student Government Association’s Office of Governmental Affairs is to provide Florida State University students with representation and advocacy within the university community and at all levels of government. Special emphasis is placed on monitoring the Florida governmental process from which the university receives a majority of its funding. In addition the Office of Governmental Affairs Board of Directors is committed to informing the student body of key governmental issues of interest and impact.

The Office of Governmental Affairs,

in collaboration with the Collegiate Veteran Association, effectively advocated for legislation which bridges gaps in the current GI Bill as well as modifications to in-state tuition requirements for veterans, ensuring student veterans at FSU and across the nation may complete their education comfortably.

Through research and analysis, the Office of Governmental Affairs published thorough recommendations on the findings of the Governor’s Florida Blue Ribbon Task Force on Higher Education.

developed an ever-growing presence at our nation’s Capitol through the Student Government Executive branch—sponsored lobbying visits and meetings with elected officials in Washington, DC. Additionally, the Office of Governmental Affairs further developed the Noles Engaged in Politics program. This year-long undergraduate education program featured an intensive curriculum of State and Federal politics with a focus on higher-education issues.

This program featured a mock-legislation program and hands-on experiences interacting with legislators at the Capitol.

The Inter-Residence Hall Council (IRHC), a residence hall association, is an executive bureau of the Florida State University Student Government Association. IRHC believes in engaging students in the on-campus living experience through community involvement, leadership development, and peer advocacy.

Our purpose is to coordinate programs and activities for the enhancement of student life in the residence halls, to represent the views of residents to SGA, and to enhance communication between residence halls.

In the 2012-2013 school year, IRHC worked diligently to fulfill our mission and purpose through programming, affiliated organizational involvement, leadership education, and promotion of the residence halls.

One aspect of our organization that we pride ourselves on is the ability to put on some of the largest housing-related programs at this University. We have been regionally recognized for our Lord of the Wings program – placing second in our recent submission for the Program of the Year bid. Our love for programming does not end at free wings; in the past year alone our executive board has gone on to host the following programs: • Seminole Sensation Week Karaoke Night and Sunset at the Rez • FSU’s Best Room on Campus • FSU v. With these programs, IRHC experienced new ways of promoting through an array of options. We furthered our utilization of social media with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and created more interactive posts with these sites for students. IRHC also worked with Student Publications to make flyers, posters, mailbox stuffers, and more to promote our programs, hall government, and IRHC. Lastly, IRHC found great use of promotional items with program-centered t-shirts, tumblers, magnets, and keychains.

Beyond programming, IRHC also had a great deal of involvement with our residence hall association affiliations: the Florida Association of Residence Halls (FARH), the South Atlantic Affiliation of College and University Residence Halls (SAACURH), and the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH). At the beginning of the school year, IRHC held elections for all 12 of our hall governments, and since then, IRHC has seen a considerable growth in the leadership skills of our students through hall government. Not only does hall government provide a leadership opportunity, but it also engages many students in how to be a voice for their fellow residents. Whether hall governments created a home-like atmosphere, built community through a program, or advocated for new vacuums behind their front desks, students were able to build lasting relationships through teamwork and collective goals.

Overall, 2012-2013 has been a beneficial year for the Inter-Residence Hall Council to fulfilling our mission in supporting the residence halls and SGA. We connected communities, developed leaders, and produced memories of a life-time.

The Center for Participant Education is an SGA bureau that was established in 1970 to provide an alternative to the traditional curriculum taught at FSU. The group was created by students who wanted to explore socially relevant topics and to foster a healthier philosophy of education through classes in which anyone could teach or attend. The group runs by consensus and strives to fight against the subjugation of the oppressed. It remains as one of the last free universities in the country. CPE is a valuable resource to all at Florida State, and tends to reach students who would otherwise not be involved in the Student Government Association.

In the Fall CPE had two or three events every week, including a Two Party Alternative speaker series where they brought members running under third party tickets. There were tons of classes as well! This spring alone CPE is hosting more than 30 classes, including American Imperialism Since WWII, Jewelry Making, Meditation, The Psychedelic Experience, Dance, and Complex Systems. CPE is also hosting multiple speakers, including a DREAM activist, Viridiana Berenice

Martinez. They’re also co-sponsoring Rape Culture Awareness Week in early April, and had two Radical Rush weeks in the beginning of both semesters. The theme this semester is Environmental Justice, and many of the classes and programming will touch on this subject. A list of all the events is located in our lovely catalog and on our website www.fsucpe.com. You can teach a class too! Submit an application for the summer or the fall, including the class title, description, and preferred dates.

CPE meets every Thursday at 7pm in Bellamy 007 for discussion and general planning of the group. They also host a

monthly coffee hour every first Monday of the month from noon till 2pm in their office, Union Room 303K. The office also has a free lending library that anyone is welcome to use, with many books and zines on topics ranging from radical politics, to gender and sexuality, to history, to environmentalism, and most anything you can think of! CPE believes in free minds and encourages all to think critically and not to accept the status quo. If you are interested in being an active participant in your own education, then stop by a meeting, a class, or the office anytime to meet like-minded individuals and get involved!

The Office of Servant Leadership, a bureau of the Student Government Association, was founded in the 20102011 school year. The Office of Servant Leadership (OSL) was established to provide support by way of funding and assistance in planning events for service based organizations. Originally Service Corps, this newly established bureau’s primary goal is to help facilitate service organizations by helping them apply for funding that the organization may not have otherwise received in order to make the vision and dreams of that organization become a reality.

Housed in the Center for Leadership and Social Change, the mission of the Office of Servant Leadership is to preserve and cultivate the spirit and action of service, philanthropy, advocacy, social justice, and leadership at the Florida State University by providing a forum for students to encourage service-focused student organizations on campus and organizing and implementing informative events that aim to enhance 62 / SGA Today Annual 2012-2013

students’ awareness of important social issues.

One side of OSL deals specifically with co-sponsoring service events on campus.

Past events that OSL has co-sponsored include Relay for Life, TEDxFSU, PeaceJam Southeast Conference, and The Big Event.

OSL looks to co-sponsor these events in order to promote service to the students and community.

The second side of OSL works with Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) on Florida State’s campus. Every week, the Office of Servant Leadership meets to vote on RSOs applying to the Service Council.

In order to be admitted to OSL’s Service Council, the president of the RSO and one other member must be financially certified, and the RSO must not have received a line item in the budget for the year they are applying. In addition to these requirements, the most important aspect of all is that the organization’s primary goal must be service based in a way that benefits members of the organization and the community as well. If these primary

requirements are met by any organization that feels its mission is service based, we urge such an organization to apply for funding through our office. However, if these primary requirements are not met, but the organization feels as if its mission is service based and benefits members of the group as well as the community, then we strongly recommend that the organization take the necessary steps to become a Recognized Student Organization, become financially certified, or fulfill whatever component may be missing.

Benefits of being part of the Service Council include one-on-one assistance in receiving SGA funding for service-related projects as well as being part of a network of service RSOs at FSU. Furthermore, being part of the Service Council allows service RSOs to connect and co-sponsor with other service RSOs. If you are an RSO looking to be admitted to the OSL’s Service Council, or are interested in learning more about cosponsorship from OSL, please feel free to contact any one of our executive members.

Men Advocating Responsible Conduct Men Advocating Responsible Conduct (MARC) is a group of students at the Florida State University who seek to educate their peers concerning the importance of appropriate and responsible behavior The Mission of MARC is to raise awareness about the socialization of men and the cultural issues of sexism and gender violence. Through advocacy, education, and training, we are committed to creating a campus culture in which gender equality and respect prevail.

Members of MARC include undergraduate and graduate students of Florida State University who demonstrate strong leadership skills and who exhibit a sincere interest in addressing issues such as sexual assault on college campuses. Goals of Organization Jolicoeur Administration: • Educating the community on the goals of MARC • Involving students on campus through workshops and seminars • Meet as a group to discuss community involvement and develop teambuilding activities • Wearing and developing a brand which advocates the Responsible Conduct of the Student Body of Florida State University The M.A.R.C organization has taken a substantial amount of criticism in its past due to its lack of consistency. The Jolicoeur Administration has been working persistently in order to repair M.A.R.C’s image since taking office in the fall of 2012.

M.A.R.C is an essential organization on Florida State University’s campus, that is continuing the promotion of responsible behavior. During fall 2012, M.A.R.C sought to achieve the goals listed above,

which the director created to reconstruct a wonderful program. Although, the organization moves in a successful direction this year, much remained to be done in order for M.A.R.C to be as successful as the other phenomenal organizations on campus such as the Woman Student Union. The Jolicoeur Administration has completed

numerous background movements in other to further the organization’s progress.

M.A.R.C statutes have been revised and the organization has been working with Florida State Center of Research Director Rick Howell to promote workshops and the beautiful measure-up flyers on our campus buses and our food court.

25th Annual MLK WEEK Living the Dream, Being the Legacy January 14-21, 2013 This year’s MLK Week was the first collaboration of the program led by the Student Government Association and Center for Leadership & Social Change, with a committee made up of Student Government Agencies, Recognized Student Organizations, and various departments on campus. The week began with the 2nd Annual Oratorical Contest presented by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and ended with a Day of Service to the Community at three different service sites.

Reflection of a Legacy highlighted student-led research of the archives regarding diversity at Florida State University, and the Night of the Arts, spearheaded by the Pride Student Union and Black Graduate Student Association, featured performances of student artists, dances, songs, spoken word, and monologues. The 25th Annual Celebration featured the legendary poet and activist Nikki Giovanni, which ended the NAACP Freedom March. In the evening, students, faculty, and staff participated in a Dinner Dialogue with Nikki Giovanni. The weekend featured the Black Student Union’s first-ever Black Film Festival, which highlighted FSU Film School faculty and staff and engaged students in a rich and thoughtful debate led by two esteemed faculty members.

Black History Month 28 Shades of Black: The Reawakening of Black Excellence, February 2013 The Black Student Union hosted sixteen events in February, and organized a calendar of over twenty five events throughout February celebrating black students, history, and culture at Florida State University. In addition to the annual events such as Opening Ceremonies, COBOL Week, Soul Food Sunday, Comedic Relief and Motown Getdown, 2013 BHM featured a new evening of arts titled the Plateau, the first-ever Black and Brilliant BHM Lecture Series with Michael Eric Dyson, and a Fireside Chat with historical FSU black graduates Fred Flowers and Connie Jenkins Pye. In addition, the work that BSU had been doing all year on the BSU House was revealed at Closing Ceremonies as participants walked thorough the Black Room and reflected upon a month of celebration and learning.

Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month Innovation Through Imagination: FSU Women Throughout the Years, March 2013 This year, the Women Student Union took over Women’s History Month in an effort to make it a student-driven celebration. Similar to other months, WHM featured over twenty activities arranged by a variety of groups and offices on campus to celebrate women. WHM worked particularly hard to highlight female athletic events in March, as well as outreach to alumni to ensure that all Seminole women are being touched by the month. This year’s event featured the 2nd Annual Leadership Conference, Ladies’ Legacy Banquet, and Vagina Monologues – all taken to the next level of programming.

New events included Political Animals, a co-sponsorship with all the SGA Agencies talking about women in power, two documentaries about women and the different ways they are heroines, and the Women in the Workforce panel featuring women from a variety of fields and professional experience sharing their life’s stories and tribulations.

Executive Branch

The Florida State University Campus Recreation department operates or manages eight facilities that provide for unstructured recreational opportunities and are home to many of the structured programs to the department. In addition to operating and managing facilities that support unstructured recreational opportunities, FSU Campus Recreation department also provides structured programs in six areas to enhance the recreational endeavors of our university patrons and participants.

Along with the appointed faculty/ staff representatives within the Campus Recreation department, there are eight elected student representatives that are dedicated to giving FSU students the most in the area of recreation. The board takes a personal responsibility in enhancing the health of every student on campus. The Rec board vets every aspect of the annual $5 million budget allotted to Campus Recreation facilities.

In addition to ensuring that the budget of the department is used in the most beneficial and efficient way, the board also proposes and evaluates additions to Campus Recreation programs and facilities, each of which benefits the students of FSU. These proposals come from members of the board, FSU students, and Campus Recreation administrators.

Many students are not aware of all of the facets of Campus Rec. These facets include The Rez, The Leach, The Fitness and Movement Clinic, Aquatics, Outdoor Pursuits, and Intramural Sports. More than 75% of FSU students use the recreational facilities and that type of engagement is something that the board is proud to represent.

They are elected officials representing the student body and appreciate any ideas that students may bring to them.

They also welcome students who are interested in Campus Recreation to attend their meetings and see how they conduct business. If any students have questions or ideas for the board, we encourage them to let us know and become involved!

The history of Homecoming at the Florida State University is rich in tradition and pride. What started off as mini week of events scheduled on a Friday and Saturday has now transformed into a week full of events, experiences and memories. Florida State University’s Homecoming 2012: It’s A Seminole Thing describes an unique bond and connection that every student, alumni, faculty member and staff of Florida State University shares.

This year’s executive board consisted of 20 student leaders led by Overall director Casey Jostine and assistant director Carly Coakley. The week of events kicked off on Sunday October 21, with the highly anticipated Warchant concert featuring Grammy award winning artist T.I. With help from the Student Government Association and other campus partners, the Homecoming executive council was able to host the Warchant concert inside of Doak Campbell Stadium for the first time ever in the history of Homecoming. Florida State University students and general public were advised to bring two canned goods. Due to the

promotion, the Second Harvest Food Bank was able to collect over 11,000 pounds of can foods, which was enough to supply about 9,695 meals to families in need in the Tallahassee area.

On Monday, the Homecoming Executive Board showed our support to the faculty and staff who help make it all happen with the Faculty and Staff Reception.

We were fortunate enough to have Provost Stokes say a few words to the members in attendance.

On Tuesday, 21 pairings consisting of various organizations hit the stage in front of a packed out crowd at Skit Night. The pairings performed skits that catered to the traditions of the Florida State University.

Wednesday started off with the carnival called Seminole Festival equipped with carnival rides, food vendors, music, and giveaways to get the students in the Seminole spirit as well as excited for the remainder of the week.

Thursday night showed how talented the students of Florida State University really are with Spear-It Night. This year’s twist

“A Night of the Arts” theme encouraged students to come in cosmo attire to witness the great talent here at Florida State University.

Friday afternoon kicked off the annual Homecoming Parade hosted by Student Alumni Association. There were over 150 different floats available; making this parade one of the largest Florida State University has seen in years. Participants of the parade included local businesses, recognized student organizations, Greek life, and others.

Friday night capped off Homecoming week with the largest Pep rally in the state of Florida called PowWow held in the Leon County Civic Center. The night of Seminole pride included performances by the Marching Chief, the FSU circus, the FSU cheerleaders, Seminole Dance Force, and the surprising wedding proposal of two fellow seminoles in front of thousands.

Headlining this year Pow Wow was none other than the primetime Emmy award winning actress and comedian Kathy Griffin.

FAREWELL TO MRS. AUVELLA

Notes about my friend, Mrs. Auvella Gaskins-Monroe April 1969 - August 2012 Overly excited students, snappy students, disappointed students, students seeking a supportive shoulder have often found their way to the office of Mrs. Auvella Gaskins-Monroe. There in Oglesby Union they’ve found her just the person with whom to share their concerns. Lest I convey the wrong impression, let me make it clear that students with cause to celebrate often visit her, but those students, the happy ones, aren’t who need her most. She shines with hurting students. In Student Government, Mrs. Auvella, as she is commonly called, has come to be a mother away from home for many students who bring their sharp minds and healthy egos to the student legislative process. Student leaders sometimes need the 76 / SGA Today Annual 2012-2013

Yes, the cause is serious, she may remind them, but consider that both sides in the debate or disagreement may have valid points, she may counsel them. Although she may fail to change the mind or feelings of a student whose cause on a particular day is soundly voted down to defeat, she has claimed many victories.

Years after serving as student leaders, former students return to her office. They check on her well-being, share details of their lives and photos of their weddings and children, and recall the days when thoughtful words from her helped them to see that defeat was temporary and that

victory should be accepted graciously.

I, too, as a staff member in Student Government on many occasions have benefitted from her calming attitude and wise counsel. We staff members also sometimes — rarely, of course — become overly concerned about things that are in truth of little long-term consequence. We staff people, as you will agree, I am sure, are unlike students in that we’re almost never overly excited and snappy. Being seasoned adults, we staff members are rarely disappointed, and almost never need a supportive shoulder. But we staff members of the SGA know that when we’re most in need we, too, can briefly borrow from our students one of Mrs. Auvella’s shoulders.
