Project Brief: The brief required the design of a product solution to improve students’ ability to be productive in the given environment of the 2nd floor of J Paul Leona

Through observation, I discovered whiteboards were being used to territotrailize space. This resulted in a monopoly of study area real estate and underutilzation of whiteboards.

The bent lamination methods used in the furniture in the space provided unique concepts for solutions of a nitegrated whiteboard, writing, typing surface, and personal storage area.

Being able to combine the utility of a desk top surface and whiteboard could assure the proper utility of the whiteboard and efficienct use of personal space for the studeant and his/ her belongings.

I began sketching the model of the a whiteboard created from one unbroken bent lamination.

I built the model in SolidWorks to deduce the radii at which I would need the angles to bend.

I used this geometry to drive the CNC design of a molding apparatus for the complex bent lamination.

I used the geometry of the CAD model to determnine the deminsions of the wood ply before lamination.

I designed this part of the molding apparatus with holes in the mold to allow for universal application of pressure by clamping.

I created test pieces as proofof concept before moving forward with the molding apparatus.

Final Prototype

The bent lamination process produced an accurate prototype made from one solid piece of unbroken wood.

Handcut white board, steel dowels and acrylic fixtures completed the prototype.

As I explored elementary engineering concepts, I came across the Archimedes Screw Mechanism, an acient method of pumping water and, later, of snow terrain transportation

Sketching

Before employing CAD modeling, I wanted to be certain that the Archimedes Screw could be reproduced or approximated in the 3D printable format. Conducting precise geometric drawings informed an auger with 45 degree reinforced base and a 90 degtree wheel and pinion system.

The components of the Archimides Screw were created individually baed on relevant coincident geometry. During this phase, the auger shape became sectioned with a male and female end. This resulted in its easy printability and extendbility.

This gear would have the same male component as the auger a nd would drive the rotation.

The bevel gear design aids in stability and maintaining alignment while the gears turn

Additionally, I wanted both to leave the auger exposed to convey external objects and also create a avenue for materials to be pushed along between threads.

These three parts were designed to hold the gears in proper alignment while allowing them to turn freely

Further Exploration

Surface Modeling

I wanted to explore the form of the toy beyond its functionality and 3D printability

I developed a streamlined housing with ergonomic gripping and vibrant amber color

Project Brief: Design a hairdrier for a new line of bathroom appliance while applying form factors and color from a designer bathroom.

Sketching: I began with my preferred approach which consists of essential form exploration and “out-there� ideative sketching before refining the design language .

I then let those more extreme concepts inform a distilled line of skethces toward a final concept.

Solid + Surface Modeling: The housing form was created in Rhino with meticulously modeled curvature designed to reflect the many light sources of a bathroom environment

Understanding Infants

Domain Audit

Conducting research into infant development inorder to gain insight into what appeals to infants developmental needs and how to diversify a toy’s age window.-

I conducted reasearch on the various levels of both fine and gross morotr skill development of infants of varying ages. I wanted to understand what was apporpriate for the age group

After conducting an audit of boutique toy stores in San Francisco, I became aware of the common themes between infant toys and let these trends inform and influence the design.

Sketching

From my sketching, I developed ideas for a wooden toy turtle with a magnetic shell

CAD Modeling

I fleshed out the turtle model in Rhino 3D. When I was satisfied, I created parametic models in Solid Works to be milled from a piece of solid wood with a Shopbot CNC

Prototyping

Using the CNC and my computer models, I created the body, the shell and the feet of the model. I was unable to achieve the desired resolution with the shopbot. I instead 3D printed the feet and hand-carved the head before priming and painting all components.
