Magazine

GRINS Grins is a lighthearted magazine meant to make people laugh through graphics, typography, images, and writing. The magazine is intended for young adults with busy schedules who need comic relief between their affairs. This particular issue is the “Food Grinning Edition” featuring an article about Kevin Hart’s favorite food obsessions.

Magazine Inspiration

INSPIRED I wanted the magazine to be full of funny content and have the design compliment the hilarity. MAD Magazine was a huge influence on how I wanted people to feel reading it so I took a look at the magazine’s content and design. Another magazine I took inspiration from is Vanity Fair’s Bill Murray issue because they were effective in using the design to compliment Murray’s jokes. I also wanted my color to reflect what people often associate with playful.

Web Design Inspiration

INSPIRED I wanted the website to compliment the film maker, James DeAngelis’ personality. There was a lot about his personality that drew me to the color blue for the website, including California beaches and his favorite light saber color. A look came to mind so I took a look at other websites that had the modern same appeal.

INSPIRED When you live in San Francisco it is very common that you or someone you know with a car will get a parking ticket frequently.

When people around me kept getting tickets it made me question the logistics of San Francisco parking tickets. I felt the best way to show information on tickets was to give it the form of the SF parking ticket.

I will also look at the different prices of tickets, and where the money the city makes goes to. Then the preventative measures people can take to avoid getting tickets, such as bike riding.

Typography

JACKSON SQUARE The Jackson Square font design tells the story of the San Francisco neighborhood, Jackson Square. From the late 1800s as a drinking district to the 21st century as a modern artsy community. The modern serifs build bridges between those times while the curves of the typeface represent the old world brick building windows.

Typography Inspiration

INSPIRED The architecture of Jackson Square was what drew me to the area and finally led me to the Jackson Square typeface. I used the arch of the brick building windows to create the base of the letter form.

The addition of serifs came from the plethora of serif fonts, the old and new, in the area.

After finding inspiration from the Jackson Square area, I started sketching different typefaces that I thought would describe the area. I then choose a final typeface to create the alphabet from.

A WEEK WITH MY MOM This is a typographic word map of a week that my mom came to visit me. We did many fun things including ride a scooter, which is why she is riding one in the word map. The scooter is placed thoughtfully on top of the days she was there. While the rest of the week is reacting to the time together, since it was the most important part of my week.

After a second look I decided to start the week at Tuesday so the scooter could be further right on the page and leave more room for its trail.

SNOOZE STER Snoozester, a quantified self app, tracks users between ages 15-25 who have trouble sleeping to increase their quality and quantity of sleep by looking at their sleeping patterns and daily routines day to day. The differentiating design of Snoozester is its in depth resource to help the user fall asleep.

UNITED NATIONS DECL AR ATION My goal was to create hierarchy within the dense document of, “The United Nations: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Reading the document, I reflected upon Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs and found the document to be a bit ironic in comparison. There were far more rights at the top of the pyramid than at the bottom.

INSPIRED My original inspiration for the project was Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid because so many items within The Universal Declaration of Human Rights fit into Maslow’s pyramid. From there, I looked at various tilted design work, especially red, black, and white color palettes.

Awareness Campaign

HOPEFUL HOMELE SS. Feminine products, although necessary, are rarely donated to homeless shelters. This leads to staining of the minimal clothing they have, poor hygiene, cervical cancer, and stealing. Since the topic is taboo, many people are unaware of this issue. As a designer I wanted to create resources that added awareness to this issue.

Awareness Campaign Inspiration

INSPIRED I was inspired by awareness campaigns that didn’t guilt people but instead encouraged and uplifted people on sensitive topics. Such as adoption campaigns by AdoptUSKids, Pedigree, and more. My goal was to educate people on a touchy subject without attacking them.

I felt an interesting comparison to my campaign would be feminine product advertisements that people are used to seeing.

By comparing the company’s revenue with the demographics of the districts a story can be told about San Francisco.
