WELCOME TO SANTA FE PRO MUSICA’S 40 TH SEASON! It is such a huge honor and thrill for me to be named the artistic director of Pro Musica. I am so excited about our future and, most importantly, about bringing LIVE music to our audiences again this coming season.

This season will be all about the celebration of glorious music and of our community of passionate listeners. It has been a joy to plan the 2021–22 season in collaboration with Tom O’Connor and Carol Redman, whose legacies will be celebrated throughout the season.

We have a spectacular season ahead that will feature some of the most exciting and renowned artists performing today. We will experience the inspiring artistry of the Dover, Castalian, Borromeo, St. Lawrence, and Diderot String Quartets, as well as the Cuarteto Casals.

We can’t wait to welcome back our beloved Pro Musica Orchestra with guest conductors Benjamin Hochman, Mei-Ann Chen, and David Felberg. In addition to great works by our beloved classical composers, we offer new works created by the newest generation. And the season will culminate with Tom O’Connor and the Pro Musica Orchestra, vocal soloists, and chorus performing Haydn’s magnificent and transcendent oratorio, The Creation.

ANNE-MARIE McDERMOTT Over the past year we have been working behind the scenes to build a new season that honors the commitments to artists and ensembles whose engagements were canceled by the pandemic. With patience, deliberation, and optimism we did the careful work of imagining the 2021–22 season with a return to sharing with you the joys of live music.

The pages of this brochure are a roadmap to the imaginations of great composers and artists. Sometimes they merely wish to entertain us; at other times they lift our spirits with a message of our shared humanity transcending daily struggles.

The wait is almost over! With Pro Musica’s new artistic director, Anne-Marie McDermott, we look forward to returning to concert stages with our colleagues. Patience, resilience, and optimism have been our watchwords. Now is the time to make our dreams come true.

WOMEN OF DISTINCTION INITIATIVE The Santa Fe Pro Musica Women of Distinction Initiative provides opportunities for women engaged in various facets of the classical music industry. This program is generously underwritten by Sallie Bingham.

ANNE-MARIE McDERMOTT, pianist and the new artistic director of Santa Fe Pro Musica, is an internationally acclaimed artist who balances a versatile career as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and artistic director.

MEI-ANN CHEN, conductor, is music director of the MacArthur Award-winning and GRAMMY-nominated Chicago Sinfonietta. One of Musical America’s Top 30 Influencers (2015), she is noted for her innovation, imagination and dynamism.

MAXINE THÉVENOT, is founder and artistic director of Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico, the director of music at the Cathedral Church of St. John, Albuquerque, and is on the faculty at the University of New Mexico.

THE HISTORY OF RED is co-commissioned by Santa Fe Pro Musica, River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (Texas), Orlando Philharmonic (Florida), and The Knights (New York). Composed by Reena Esmail with text by poet Linda Hogan, this new work was initiated by and will feature soprano Kathryn Mueller.

REENA ESMAIL is an award-winning IndianAmerican composer who weaves together the worlds of Hindustani and Western classical musics.

LINDA HOGAN (Chickasaw) is a poet, storyteller and writer. She has received many awards, including the prestigious Lannan Literary Award and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

KATHRYN MUELLER, is a three-time GRAMMY-nominated soprano. She grew up at the edge of Arizona’s White Mountain Apache Reservation, and has a long association with Santa Fe Pro Musica.

THOMAS O’CONNOR CELEBRATION Nothing can keep us from celebrating our founder, former principal oboist, conductor, and music director emeritus, Thomas O’Connor! At the close of our 40th season, and the beginning of Tom’s retirement, please join us as we celebrate his four decades of musical and educational contributions to the cultural fabric of Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico.
