Questions & Answers Housing Choice Voucher 2012 Resident Advisory Board May 1, 2012 1. Is disability a preference? No, disability is not a preference but is a consideration for the Conventional Public Housing program because some buildings are designated “senior/disabled.” 2. What does “no preference” mean? “No preference” means that the Housing Authority would follow all the laws regarding preferences. However, barring state or federal law, all other applicants would be ordered by the date and time of their application. 3. Do preferences have to be verified? Yes. All preferences must be verified at the time of intake. 4. Can an individual request a reasonable accommodation for a mental disability? Yes 5. What does HAP stand for? Housing Assistance Payment 6. Why isn’t the Housing Authority required to review all surrounding circumstances in the termination of assistance? This is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. 7. Is the landlord required to have a briefing prior to being part of the Housing Choice Voucher Program? The inspector takes a packet to the initial inspection and answers any questions the landlord has. 8. When can the landlord request a rent increase? 9. Can a family member/relative rent to a fellow family member/relative? No. The only exception is as a reasonable accommodation. 10. What is the timeframe for the Change of Ownership to take place?
