Giving and Volunteering:

Supporting our community at San Francisco Day School 2020-21

WHY WE GIVE

The generous gifts of time, talent, and financial resources from parents, guardians, and our greater community are essential to sustaining the quality and depth of programs for students and to cultivating our vibrant community of learners. Volunteerism is equally important in cultivating our vibrant community of learners--your contributions of time and talent enable our school to thrive. Your generosity supports the people and programs that make our school so special: passionate teachers, innovative curriculum, and an inclusive and diverse community.

ANNUAL FUND

Like all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of providing an exceptional education for every SF Day student. The Annual Fund is our school’s philanthropic priority, as it typically covers 8-9% of the school’s operating budget and directly supports our students and teachers in their learning. Unrestricted Annual Fund gifts enable the school to meet the most pressing needs of our program, students, and teachers within the current school year. Thank you to the 97% of current families who made a gift this past year!

2020-21 Goals: •

Achieve 100% participation by December 31, 2020

Later this fall, you will receive a letter from this year’s Annual Fund co-chairs, Aaron Money (6th, 3rd, K) and Kimberley Tompkins Pettigrew (8th, 5th) asking for your support. Our Annual Fund is the collective gift of our entire community and we ask that every SF Day family make a gift that is meaningful and accessible to you.

We are also grateful to the many donors who leverage their employer’s corporate giving programs. SF DAY FEST

Every year, our parents, guardians, faculty, staff, and administrators look forward to SF Day Fest, an annual benefit to build community and raise funds to support Discounted Tuition and strategic initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (‘DEI’). Typically, SF Day Fest is a celebratory evening with dinner, cocktails, dancing, and a “Raise Your Paddle.” The school also hosts an online auction including parent/guardian and student “count-me-in” parties and dozens of items. Thanks to the generosity of our community, SF Day Fest 2020 raised over $300,000 to support DEI at our school. Even though we unable to gather in person last year, our community rallied to support our students and faculty. These valuable funds were allocated to DEIfocused professional development, curriculum enhancements, and community engagement. This year, we look forward to reimagining SF Day Fest 2021 while preserving its joyful spirit of community building and celebration. Please stay tuned for future updates about this special event.

2020-21 Goals: •

Come together in celebration and support of our community

Raise critical funds to support discounted tuition and diversity, equity, and inclusion at SF Day

VOLUNTEER

Volunteerism is an essential aspect of our community at SF Day. As our children observe parents, guardians, grandparents, and alumni give generously of their time and talent, they learn the importance of giving back. Volunteering for the school provides many benefits, including the opportunity to explore your child’s school life in a new way. It also provides an opportunity to build relationships with staff, teachers, and fellow parents, and more fully understand how our mission is carried out every day. During this unique time, there are still many ways to get involved at SF Day according to your interests and schedule. Here are just a few opportunities: •

Serve as a Room Parent

Participate in the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity & Equity in Action) Parent/Guardian Group

Serve as a Class Captain for the Annual Fund

Volunteer to become an Admissions Ambassador

Join fellow parents and guardians in Community Outreach

CAMPAIGNS & ENDOWMENTS At this critical point in the growth and development of the school, the Head of School and Board of Trustees have initiated a fundraising campaign necessary to strengthen our academic program and improve facilities. This project falls outside of the operating budget and is an investment in the future of SF Day.

This Is Our Day: The Campaign for SF Day We are currently in the leadership phase of a multi-year capital campaign, This is Our Day, to build a new academic building on Golden Gate Avenue including a theatre, arts and innovation labs, outdoor garden and lower school play yard. The project also includes seven units for faculty housing. Construction on the new facility began this summer and we are grateful to all who have supported the campaign to date. To learn more, please contact Erin Wright at ewright@sfday.org.

What to expect •

Campaigns last approximately 3-5 years

Families are typically invited to support 1-2 campaigns while their children are enrolled at SF Day

Endowments Generous gifts from current parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and staff built our $29.2 million endowment and continue to support SF Day every year. This year, the endowment draw will cover 8% of the school’s annual operations and help to fund our educational programs, faculty professional development, and discounted tuition. We are continually seeking donors interested in supporting endowment growth. If you would like to learn more, please contact Erin Wright (ewright@sfday.org) in the Advancement Office.

Planned Giving Planned gifts may include bequests, trusts, and property transfers. Planned giving donors are members of the SF Day Dolphin Society.
