Giving and Volunteering:

Supporting our community at San Francisco Day School 2018-19

WELCOME!

Dear Friends, We’re extraordinarily fortunate to have a community in which parents, faculty, trustees, alumni, grandparents, and friends give gifts of time, talent, and financial resources each year. We share a dedication to our school mission and to advancing the success of our students and teachers. We invite you to explore the giving opportunities outlined here and contribute in a way that is meaningful for your family. Together, we create an environment of collaboration and support that nurtures and inspires every SF Day student. Thank you! We look forward to partnering together. With appreciation,

Deirdre Nonaka Erin Wright-Gandhi President, Parents Association Director of Advancement (7th, ‘16, ‘18) (K)

WHY WE GIVE

Gifts to San Francisco Day School are not only greatly appreciated, but essential to sustaining the quality and depth of program our students experience every day. Like all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of providing an exceptional education for every SF Day student. We rely both on tuition income and philanthropic gifts to balance our budget each year. Volunteerism is equally important in cultivating our vibrant community of learners--your contributions of time and talent enable our school to thrive. Your generosity supports the people and programs that make our school so special: talented teachers, innovative curriculum, a diverse community, and inspiring learning environments.

The Annual Fund is the school’s highest giving priority each year. It supports vital investments that inspire our passionate learners and provides an immediate impact on our program.

Why:

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund enable SF Day to meet the most pressing current needs of our program, students, and teachers. Your generosity empowers us to attract and support the best faculty; develop the artist and athlete in every student; extend learning beyond the classroom; and pursue innovative learning opportunities.

When:

SF Day asks every member of our community to make a pledge or gift to the Annual Fund at the beginning of each school year. Pledges can be remitted through June 30, 2019. Letters asking for your support will be mailed to families in September and Annual Fund volunteers will be in touch to answer questions.

How:

Gifts can be made via online, in person, remit envelope, or securities. Please contact Lauren Becker (lbecker@sfday.org) with questions.

2018-19 Goals: •

Achieve 100% participation by December 14, 2018

Raise $1.305M in unrestricted support

SF DAY FEST

Every spring, we rally for SF Day Fest, an annual benefit to build community and raise funds to support Discounted Tuition and strategic initatives.

What: SF Day Fest is a celebratory evening with cocktails, dinner, “Raise Your Paddle,” and dancing. Leading up to the event, the school hosts an online auction that includes sign-ups for parent and student “count-me-in” parties and dozens of items. Thanks to the generosity of SF Day families and local businesses, SF Day Fest 2018 raised over $360,000 to support discounted tuition and professional development for our teachers.

How:

There are many ways to take part and all parents are encouraged to participate. In the months prior to SF Day Fest, families are invited to underwrite the event, donate items for the auction, and host countme-ins. At the event, you can give directly to SF Day through “Raise Your Paddle.” Volunteers are also greatly appreciated, as there is much to do in preparation for the festivities!

When:

Save the Date! SF Day Fest 2019 is Saturday, March 30 at the Palace Hotel. Starting this fall, our volunteer committee will be in touch to ask for your support.

2018-19 Goals: •

Come together for a memorable evening in celebration and support of our community

Raise critical funds to support discounted tuition and professional development

VOLUNTEER

Volunteerism is an essential aspect of our flourishing community. As our children watch parents, grandparents, and alumni give generously of their time and talent, they learn the importance of giving back. Volunteering at the school provides many benefits, including the opportunity to explore your child’s school life and get to know their classmates. It also provides an opportunity to build relationships with staff, teachers, and fellow parents, and see how our mission is carried out every day. Each year, we seek volunteers for a range of projects and events through our Parents Association and the Advancement Office. There are many ways to get involved according to your interests and schedule. Here are just a few opportunities: •

Chaperone field trips

Assist in the Library

Serve as a Room Parent

Participate in the Diversity & Inclusion Parent Group

Serve as a Class Captain for the Annual Fund

Volunteer at Family Photo Night

Volunteer as an Admission tour guide

Help plan SF Day Fest

CAMPAIGNS & ENDOWMENTS The school we love was built by generations of people who have given their time, talents, energy, and financial resources to make SF Day the remarkable place it is today. At this critical point in the growth and development of the school, the Head of School and Board of Trustees have initiated a fundraising campaign necessary to strengthen our academic program and improve facilities. This project falls outside of the operating budget and is an investment in the future of SF Day. We are currently in the leadership phase of a multi-year capital campaign to build a new academic building on Golden Gate Avenue including a theatre, arts and innovation labs, outdoor garden and lower school play space. The project will also renovate 2120-22 Golden Gate for faculty housing and add to the endowment for Discounted Tuition.

What to expect: •

Campaigns last approximately 3-5 years

Families are typically invited to support 1-2 campaigns while their children are enrolled at SF Day

Endowments: Generous gifts from current parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and staff built our $28.7 million endowment and continue to support SF Day every year. This year, the endowment draw will cover 9% of the school’s annual operations and help to fund our educational programs, faculty professional development, and discounted tuition. We are continually seeking donors interested in supporting endowment growth. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Erin Wright (ewright@sfday.org) in the Advancement Office.

Planned Giving: Planned gifts may include bequests, trusts, and property transfers. Planned giving donors are members of the SF Day Dolphin Society.

Breakthrough SF: Breakthrough San Francisco supports young people on the path to college and trains outstanding college students for education careers. The program is affiliated with Breakthrough Collaborative and fiscally sponsored by SF Day. SF Day families are invited to support the program’s work toward educational equity. For more information on how to support Breakthrough SF, visit www.breakthroughsf.org.
