Theater is often described as a powerful medium for self-expression, connection, and growth. For graduate, Olivia Duncan, now a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, this art form has been a transformative journey that blends creativity with personal development. Majoring in Political Science and minoring in Indigenous Studies, Olivia brings a unique perspective from both her academic and theatrical pursuits. Reflecting on her theatrical journey, Olivia’s favorite role as “Phyllis Montague” in Play On stands out. “I loved the ability to just let loose and have fun,” she recalls. This role felt natural to her, allowing her to explore the joy of performance without the weight of expectations. However, it was her experience in Footloose that truly defined her connection to theater. During a time of significant change in her life, the energetic musical provided a safe space to have fun and discover more about herself. “Footloose was where I got to have fun and learn more about myself. I made some of my best friends through that show,” Olivia explains. The camaraderie and musicality of the production became a pivotal part of her high school experience, reinforcing the notion that theater is a sanctuary for selfdiscovery and friendship.
Olivia emphasizes the communal aspect of theater as one of its greatest strengths. “Theater is more special than I ever would have anticipated,” she says. It unites people from diverse backgrounds through the shared love of performance, creating a welcoming environment for those seeking an outlet. For Olivia, the O’Gorman community played a vital role, offering a space where she and her peers could express themselves and find their footing amidst the uncertainties of adolescence.
She recalls the little moments that made her experience so memorable: the conversations before rehearsal, the backstage makeup routines, and the joy of watching her fellow castmates grow in confidence. “Ultimately, it was connecting with my castmates, learning their personalities, and discovering more about myself at the same time,” she reflects.
As Olivia transitioned from high school to college, she learned invaluable lessons about navigating both her academic and artistic pursuits. “Take it one day at a time,” she advises. This mindset shift allowed her to embrace each day as a fresh start, emphasizing that a bad day is merely a moment in time, not a permanent state. Olivia also acknowledges the importance of following her intuition.
Reflecting on her choices, she admits to a few regrets, particularly not auditioning for the musical during her sophomore year. “I made a million excuses,” she recalls. “In the end, I felt left out and I knew I made a mistake.” This experience taught her the importance of seizing opportunities, reinforcing her belief in taking chances and trusting her instincts.
As she continues her studies, she cherishes the moments in rehearsal when the transition from memorizing lines to character development begins. “Seeing everyone’s individual choices and personalities come alive is something seriously magical,” she expresses.
Olivia Duncan stands as a testament to the power of theater not just as an art form, but as a means of personal growth, community building, and self-discovery. Her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring performers and students alike, reminding us all of the magic that can unfold when we embrace our passions and follow our hearts.

After 25 years and 100 shows, Mr. Kevin Humke retired last year as Technical Director at OGHS. We found a unique way to fill the position by splitting it up into two areas, stage craft and technical design. We are excited to announce that Mr. Jeff Rhone has joined our team as the new Stage Craft Director. With a diverse background in construction and education, Jeff brings a wealth of experience and a passion for hands-on learning that will undoubtedly enrich our theatre program.
Jeff’s journey began in 1993 when he graduated from high school. His early career included working at Bruns Construction and the Sioux Falls Ski Patrol, where he honed his teamwork and problem-solving skills while serving the community. During his time at the University of South Dakota from 1993 to 1997, he earned a degree in Computer Science, which complemented his growing interest in technology and project management. In the mid-90s, Jeff expanded his professional repertoire,
working with the Vermillion Ambulance and Bi-State Window and Door, all while starting his first construction company in 1996. This entrepreneurial spirit has defined much of his career, showcasing his ability to innovate and lead in the construction industry.
In 1998, Jeff married Kelly, and they welcomed their daughter, Abbey, in 2000. Shortly after, they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where Jeff took on the role of a stay-at-home dad until the birth of their son, Landon, in 2004. The family then relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, where Jeff pursued a degree in Construction Management from Southeast Community College, graduating in 2007.
Jeff’s career continued to flourish in Lincoln, where he worked at Earl Carter Lumber from 2007 to 2011, specializing in a custom cabinet shop. In 2011, he returned to Sioux Falls and founded Woodworks Construction, further establishing his reputation in the industry. His commitment to education became evident when he began teaching at O’Gorman High School in 2018. This role allowed Jeff to share his extensive knowledge and skills with students, fostering a new generation of builders and craftsmen.
As the new Stage Craft Director, Jeff is eager to combine his construction expertise with the theatre department. His vision is to create a collaborative environment where students can engage in theatre design, learn essential skills, and explore the world of stagecraft in an innovative and exciting way.
We are thrilled to have Jeff on board and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our program and students.

Ms. Kimberly Schulte has recently stepped into the role of Technical Director for the Theatre Department at O’Gorman High School, marking a new chapter in her already vibrant career. As the seventh sibling of the Schulte family, she continues the family’s legacy at O’Gorman. The Schulte family’s enduring presence at the school speaks volumes about their commitment to education and OGHS and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have Ms. Schulte.
After graduating OGHS in 2015, she attended Benedictine College, where she earned a degree in secondary math education. Her passion for teaching led her to serve as a Catholic missionary in Belize for two years, where she taught both math and religion at a local high school. This experience not only deepened her commitment to education but also enriched her understanding of diverse cultures and communities. After her time in Belize, Ms. Schulte returned to the United States and taught at a
Catholic high school in Wichita, Kansas, where she honed her teaching skills further.
In her quest to return home to Sioux Falls and be closer to her family, she was thrilled to accept a position at O’Gorman Junior High. Now in her second year there, she has embraced the opportunity to help shape young minds, all while staying true to her commitment to Catholic education. “While I love teaching math, I love even more helping students grow toward their most important goal— heaven,” she shares.
In addition to her academic role, Ms. Schulte’s passion for the performing arts has brought her back to the stage she knows and loves. As a high school student at O’Gorman, she was deeply involved in technical theater under the guidance of Mr. Kevin Humke, contributing to the first 16 shows in the newly built Performing Arts Center (PAC). Her enthusiasm for lighting and sound design during those formative years has only intensified over time. “The PAC has always been one of my favorite places,” she reflects. “I hope to help students find the same joy I found there in high school—and still do!”
As Technical Director, Ms. Schulte is eager to inspire a new generation of students, helping them explore their creative talents while fostering a love for the performing arts. Her unique blend of teaching experience, technical expertise, and unwavering dedication to her faith and community makes her an invaluable asset to our department. With Ms. Kimberly Schulte, students can look forward to an engaging and enriching experience that not only emphasizes technical skill but also encourages personal and spiritual growth.

After years of dedicated service, Teresa Fester is stepping down as the head coach of the Oral Interpretation team, marking the end of an era. Fester has been instrumental in shaping the program, guiding countless students to success in the art of speech and performance. Her leadership and passion will be greatly missed, but the future looks bright as Mr. Charlie Solomon takes over the reins.
Mr. Solomon, an alum of O’Gorman High School, graduated in 2012 with a wealth of experience in oral interpretation. He attended the University of Nebraska-
Lincoln (UNL), where he majored in Psychology and Biochemistry. He later pursued a Master’s in Education at Black Hills State University, equipping him with the knowledge and pedagogical skills necessary for a successful teaching career. We are grateful he chose to come back to his roots
Since joining OGHS as a teacher in 2020, Mr. Solomon has already made significant contributions to the school’s speech and theatre programs. He codirected the Children’s Show in both 2022 and 2023, showcasing his ability to
guide and inspire young performers. His competitive background is impressive; during his high school years, he secured a remarkable second place in the nation in Duo Interpretation, along with placing seventh in Duo, Humorous, and Storytelling. These accomplishments not only highlight his talent but also reflect his deep understanding of the intricacies of performance.
In the past few years, Mr. Solomon had some talented duos who ranked in semifinals and top 30 in the nation—a testament to his coaching ability. He also loves coaching Humorous, Storytelling, and Dramatic Interp. His experience as a competitor and coach positions him well to lead the Oral Interpretation team into the future.
In this transition, Mr. Solomon will not be alone. He will continue to receive guidance from Ms. Chloe Goldade, a seasoned figure in the program, ensuring a smooth handover and continuity in coaching strategies. With both Mr.
Solomon’s innovative vision and Chloe’s experience and passion for Program Oral Interp, Original Oratory, Informative, and Poetry, the program is set to thrive. In addition to his coaching role, Solomon has taught biology and chemistry, and currently, is conveying his knowledge in physics and engineering. This diverse educational background enables him to bring a unique perspective to the speech program, where critical thinking and creativity are essential.
As Ms. Teresa Fester embarks on her well-deserved retirement, the Oral Interpretation program stands poised for continued excellence under Mr. Solomon’s leadership. She is still involved in the background as she teaches the Oral Interpretation class and is helping with administrative duties. Mr. Solomon’s track record, combined with Chloe Goldade’s mentorship, promises to cultivate a new generation of talented speakers and performers.
