DEAR BRANDEIS COMMUNITY, The 2022-2023 school year was a particularly sweet one at The Brandeis School of San Francisco, as we had the opportunity to look back on the Brandeis 2023 Strategic Plan and celebrate the many successes we’ve enjoyed as a school in the five years since its publication. And of course, before we published it, we spent two years engaged as a full community in reflective practices, working together to deeply understand who we were and who we aspired to be, before distilling that thinking into the precise language of a strategic plan. Seven years of careful study, conversation, and hard work—and then, just as in the biblical shmita, a time of rest and renewal before we do it again! So with that spirit of celebration in mind, I offer here a brief list of five highlights from the work of Brandeis 2023: 1. Over three school years, more than one third of all faculty meetings were devoted to a review of our pedagogy and curriculum, with teams focused on specific topics such as inquiry-based learning, science, and literacy—a process which led to the selection of a new and more studentcentered math curriculum for the lower school. 2. In the past five years, as part of our continuing education program for faculty members, fourteen Brandeis teachers earned mission-aligned postgraduate degrees (ranging from doctorates in education to master’s degrees in Jewish Education and STEAM), receiving support for 75% of outof-pocket tuition costs. 3. Seeking to “embrace opportunities for sustained conversations about important and challenging topics regarding contemporary Jewish life and practice,” we engaged our full faculty over two years in learning about how to talk to kids—and to each other—about Israel, with Resetting the Table as well as Professor Sivan Zakai from Hebrew Union College. 4. In addition to raising $1.8M+ for the Brandeis 2023 Campaign, the past five years have seen giving to The Brandeis Fund increase from $440K to over $700K annually, with parent participation exceeding 95%. 5. Being more intentional about “cultivating a community where all people feel welcome and included” has led to a more representative and diverse board of trustees, greater diversity on our faculty, staff, and leadership, and the most ethnically and racially diverse incoming Kindergarten class in our history, and the largest since 2018.

It would be easy to name another dozen highlights from the work of the Brandeis 2023 Strategic Plan, from our efforts around teaching students to be stewards of democracy, to our graduates continuing to thrive and take on leadership roles in the top high schools and colleges in the Bay Area and across the country. It is a blessing to be part of such a vibrant and thoughtful community—thank you all for the part you play in making it so. As we look ahead to our 60th school year next year, may we go from strength to strength! Warmly,

Our community members and families past and present play a significant role in sustaining a culture of giving and engagement at our school. Collectively, your generosity makes an important impact on the lives of our students. As we share our gratitude for another school year, all of us at Brandeis recognize the many contributions that fuel the student experience that is found at Brandeis.

ART IN ACTION: VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM Ron Moultrie Saunders, artist and landscape architect, visited Brandeis as the Art in Action Visiting Artist and spent two days with the second, seventh, and eighth grade students making art. The Art in Action Visiting Artist Program was established through the generosity of the late Al Friedman z”l, grandparent of Brandeis alumnae Elie ‘20, Noa ‘20, Emma ‘20, and Nathan Friedman-Lowenthal. Al’s dedication to his own artistic practice of sculpting stone, which he took up later in life, brought him a great deal of joy which he wanted to pass on to our students. The Art in Action Program exposes our students to art that responds to contemporary social issues. Ron’s artwork has been shaped by learning more about the influence of the

African Diaspora on Bay Area history. He brings awareness to the diminishing Black community in San Francisco and the importance of preserving the artistic community as central to the soul and strength of our city. Ron shared his process of making photograms, which are photographs that are made without the use of a camera. Then, he spent time with students as they created canvases of found objects which they imprinted with their artistic silhouettes using sunlight on cyanotype paper. Thank you for the generous support of Al “Bumpy” Friedman z”l and Barbara and Ron Kaufman (grandparents of Brandeis alumnae Olivia ‘16 and Anna Perlman ‘16) who support the Arts Program at Brandeis. These gifts enrich the arts offerings for our students and expose them to artists and artistic practices meant to inspire them to think about how art can make a lasting difference in the world.

OUR SHINSHINIT SHINED! We were excited to invite Nataly Rodov to join Brandeis in 2022-2023 as our Israel Education Intern or Shinshinit (acronym for shnat sherut, or year of service). Prior to her year of service, she was trained as a leader with a focus on Jewish heritage, Jewish sources, and issues of national and religious identity. Nataly brought incredible school spirit to Brandeis by celebrating moments small and large to give life to the rhythm of the year. She played Israeli music during drop off and encouraged students to dance their way into a joyful morning of learning. She helped teachers during Hebrew and Judaic Studies classes and built community with students by hosting games at recess. She celebrated weekly tefilah and even taught an Israeli Scouts elective for middle school students. She invited an authentic dialogue for our students who wanted to learn more about Israel. Several families hosted Nataly during her year-long stay. Many thanks to the Glass family (Dan, Kate, Sonia ‘23,

Alma ‘26, and Lucia ‘32), and the Bodington family (Shaun, Rebecca and Phoebe ‘30) for opening their homes and hearts with generous hospitality during Nataly’s time at Brandeis. Brandeis looks forward to continuing to participate in the Shinshinim Program, a program of the Jewish Agency for Israel, in 2023 and beyond.

“Having Nataly as a shinshinit in our home has been an absolute joy. Nataly expanded our family’s understanding of the Russian-speaking community in Israel, and our sense of what life is like for teenagers there. It’s also been good practice for us, as we look ahead to parenting high schoolers ourselves!” - The Glass Family

BETTER TOGETHER “A Jew is asked to take a leap of action rather than a leap of faith.” - Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel Service learning is a hallmark of a Brandeis education with its roots stemming from a Jewish tradition that teaches actions speak louder than words. In June, we completed a four-year partnership between Brandeis and the San Francisco Center for Jewish Living (SFCJL), sponsored by the Legacy Heritage Better Together Program. Designed to create meaningful intergenerational connections between our eighth graders and senior residents in our community, Brandeis students have

engaged in cultivating profound relationships with seniors at SFCJL while engaging academically in depth with Jewish values and text. This multi-year program has enabled our eighth graders to build meaningful and lasting connections with senior residents and learn invaluable lessons in kibud zekaynim, which means living out the values that remind us to learn from those who have come before us. We are grateful to the Legacy Heritage Foundation for their generous support and to the San Francisco Center for Jewish Living who continue to be wonderful partners in this collaboration. Although the institutional funding for this program has come to an end, we are planning to continue offering this service learning experience to our eighth graders next year and beyond, and we are actively seeking donors who are inspired by this partnership to help us underwrite this inspirational program.

SAN FRANCISCO CAMPUS FOR JEWISH LIVING - A GLIMPSE INTO OUR PAST “I had new inspiration. When being with the elderly, there is never a dull moment. You don’t share experiences, but you do get a glimpse of a life from a different era, which is the history class I have always wanted. As a teenager, it’s not rare to feel lost or misplaced, but when the wisdom of the elderly exits their mouth and into my ears, there is a sudden sigh of relief from both of us.” - excerpt from Better2Write essay by Sofia Lavine ‘23

THE LABEL FAMILY

LAURA, ANTHONY, LOLA ‘21 AND ARI ‘23 “We wanted our kids to be mensches, and the menschlichkeit at Brandeis was palpable.” We sat down with the always entertaining and joyful, Laura and Anthony Label, to discuss their family’s eleven-year journey at Brandeis. Where did you grow up and what are your careers? (Anthony) I am a fourth-generation San Franciscan born in the city and raised in Marin County. I am a plaintiff’s trial attorney at The Veen Firm in the city. (Laura) I grew up in New York City and moved to San Francisco right after graduating from college. I am a psychologist in a private practice. With Ari’s recent graduation in 2023 and Lola’s in 2021, how would you describe your family’s experience at Brandeis and what your collective time at the school has meant to you? It’s difficult to overstate the profound impact that the school has had on all of our lives. As Ari shared in his final parentteacher conference, Brandeis is where he “learned to learn.” This community has provided opportunities for connection that are far-reaching for each of us and have dramatically contributed to our children’s sense of themselves and their expectations of others. Brandeis has been aligned with our parenting approach in many ways, often reinforcing our children’s sense that their voices will be met with compassion and interest. Lola and Ari had many moments throughout the eleven years we have been at Brandeis when they felt known and understood by staff and faculty at the school, classmates, and members of the many families that have been integral in our lives. (Anthony) I did not grow up with a Jewish identity or faith and was a little unsure of what it would be like to be in a school where almost everyone had a different experience than I had. This uncertainty immediately dissipated with the warm openness of this community, and we have made many lifelong family friends as a result of our time here. Anthony, you played a pivotal role in the spring fundraiser for many years. What inspired you to bring your talents and authentic self into this milieu? I always enjoy any opportunity to be on stage - from karaoke, to a courtroom, to being a terrible lead singer for the Mazel Tov Cocktails parents’ band. I love performing and making people laugh, even if it comes at my own expense. Being the emcee and co-auctioneer at the Brandeis galas was a fun opportunity to really lean into something I enjoy, in a way that benefitted the school by increasing people’s engagement and enthusiasm during the live auction.

4

What inspires your giving at Brandeis? We hope that our support can enrich the learning environment and provide opportunities for children who might not get to attend Brandeis without the financial contributions of the community. We feel that regardless of how much you are able to give, a gift to the school is a contribution to the school’s mission, creating a ripple effect of “kindness, integrity, and service.” What message to encourage engagement do you have for current and new families at Brandeis? Whenever possible, be a part of this community, and promote connections between students. The students at Brandeis often remain connected for life. Gathering at school-sponsored and peer-organized events deepens the bonds and the memories your children will have of these sweet early years. Why is having a Jewish Day School essential to the larger Jewish community in San Francisco? When your child attends Brandeis, you feel the presence of the Jewish community. That’s not always the case in San Francisco. The values Brandeis instills through Jewish education help children learn to be good citizens of the world, understanding the importance of learning, leading, and giving back. It is also important that a Jewish Day School exists as a part of the San Francisco community, to help form bonds and connections with other organizations. This visibility exposes other members of the San Francisco community to Jewish people and our contributions to the world around us. While each family’s journey at Brandeis is unique, sitting with Laura and Anthony and hearing about their profound experience at our school, reminds us that the voyage shared by so many is truly a bond that stretches across generations.

BRANDEIS: A COMMUNITY PORTRAIT The Brandeis 2023 Strategic Plan called on us to “cultivate a community where people feel welcome and included, where differences are honored as an essential component of a learning community, and where our diversities—of socio-economic background and status, gender identity, family structure, sexual orientation, religion, race, ethnicity, and more—are secured, celebrated, and supported.” Although the pandemic may have impacted our ability to strengthen our connections to one another in person, the work of building and sustaining a diverse community continued with tremendous vigor. Throughout the 2021-22 school year, the Brandeis Leadership Team worked to collect detailed and specific data about our school’s demographics, with the goal of publishing this information on our website to share with current and prospective families.

The infographic that appears on this page was published in the fall of 2022, and has had an immediate, positive effect, most notably a significant jump in the number of interfaith and biracial households who submitted inquiries and applied to Brandeis for fall 2023. Our current Kindergarten class is the most diverse in our history! Nearly a quarter of families identify as non-white, half are eligible to receive some amount of tuition assistance, nine languages other than English are spoken at home, and students are coming from sixteen different zip codes in the San Francisco and San Mateo counties.

Well-known American philanthropist Lynn Schusterman has often said that a Jewish community that openly embraces all who seek to actively lead Jewish lives will be one that endures for generations to come. The effort we make today to understand who we are, and who is truly welcome, is an investment in the next 60 years and beyond.

2022–2023

FINANCIALS & GIFT REPORT

Dear Brandeis Community, It was rewarding to reflect on the achievements of the past school year and on our collective work together as a community in bringing the Brandeis 2023 Strategic Plan to a close. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge work that took place in many areas of the school that demonstrates the energetic and collaborative role of the Board of Trustees with the administration and faculty and staff. Together we are strengthening the values we all hold dear to ensure continuity and a lasting legacy for an education that shapes our students and their families now and forever. 2022-2023 Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Jonathan Terdiman Vice Chair Abigail Michelson Porth Treasurer Jody Barkin Secretary Ruth Katz Trustees Tahlia Bliss Amy Cohen Jessica England Jane Froyd Steve Ganz Ellen Ginsberg Alex Gleser Dingli Graham Hadara Stanton Hersh Ruth Katz Udi Ledergor Julie Lewis David Samson Anat Shiwak-Harry Lynette Stejskal Joseph Tartakovsky Jamie Weinstein Love Weinstock Parents’ Association Co-Presidents Jason Pollack & Justine Simpson

Undertaking a deep dive to accelerate work in many areas of the school, the Board of Trustees has supported Dr. Glass and the leadership team by taking the long view of the life of the school to consider future needs as they relate to the development of the campus. We are looking at how to optimize and strengthen existing facilities to support learning, foster collaboration, and enhance community building for students, faculty and community. These needs will be important factors in next year’s strategic plan. As part of the work around diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Board of Trustees is actively working as a body to be more representative of the Brandeis community. This intentional work has resulted in the addition of trustees who represent the full diversity of our community.

BRANDEIS GIVING DAY— AN INCREDIBLE SHOW OF SUPPORT! Our community stepped up on Brandeis Giving Day, November 18, 2022, to help our school achieve two very special matching gift challenges from two families totaling $65,000. Their generosity inspired our entire community past and present to collectively donate more than $125,000 to The Brandeis Fund in one day. Thank you to our donors for these wonderful challenge gifts and to everyone who donated to the Brandeis Fund in 2022-2023 to benefit our students and their education. GRANDPARENTS AND SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY Every year, grandparents and special friends gather at Brandeis to spend a heartwarming morning with our students. This day offers a rich opportunity to learn and share with each other the wisdom of our years and how they have shaped who we are today—l’dor v’dor. A Brandeis education is marked with rituals and traditions celebrated throughout the school year in community with fellow students, teachers, and families. Grandparents and Special Friends Day is one of those special traditions that lifts up our entire school—one which allows our students to reflect on and share what they love best about Brandeis while inviting their loved ones into the sacred space where their learning takes place.

“We are so grateful that our grandsons have enjoyed the benefits of a Brandeis education—an education that is not just about learning but about nurturing the values of democracy, inclusiveness, empathy, and justice. In so doing, Brandeis has created a caring and vibrant community imbued with a commitment to repairing the world. This is what we hold dear.” - Louise Epstein, grandparent of Zelig ‘25, Herschel ‘22, and Isadore ‘20

APRIL 29, 2023

Our generous community made our annual fundraiser for tuition assistance, Brandeis on Bourbon Street, a great success! All of us shared a spirited evening of music with the Honor Brass Band, delicious food, and a program filled with laughter and joy hosted by our incredible auctioneer Ellen Toscano. Together we celebrated everything we love about Brandeis. The combined contributions resulted in more than $315,000 raised, demonstrating a strong show of support for our collective commitment to socio-economic diversity at Brandeis. This event is only possible with the broad participation of our Brandeis community members who gave in countless ways to make the event a success including donating auction and raffle items and hosting count-me-in events. Thank you for your generosity in supporting our students and our school. A very special thank you to the committee of volunteers who contributed their time and talent for this momentous event. A LEGACY OF DEDICATION & SERVICE On Sunday, September 11, 2022, we hosted a retirement celebration to acknowledge Neal Biskar and Abbe Wainwright for their incredible dedication and combined 60 plus years of service to our students and our school. It was inspiring to see so many Brandeis alumni and their families spanning multiple generations! Neal and Abbe were incredibly grateful and moved by the celebration and by seeing so many familiar faces. San Francisco Supervisor for District 8, Rafael Mandelman ‘88, presented both honorees with a certificate of recognition by the city. The day was a reminder of the boundless strength of our Brandeis community. IN HONOR OF NEAL BISKAR: In Neal’s four decades of sacred work at Brandeis, he held many titles from Dean of Students to Head of Campus to Middle School Teacher and Advisor. Through it all he put our students at the center of the Brandeis universe. At the heart of his practice with both faculty and students, Neal valued individual intellectual curiosity the most, and how it shaped the lives “Mr. Biskar set the standard of generations of teachers and students for what an excellent who have passed teacher should be like; through our school’s knowledgeable, interactive, doors. IN HONOR OF ABBE WAINWRIGHT: Abbe was a tireless warrior for our students during her 23 years at Brandeis. She was the person who supported parents when they wondered how their child could find success and fulfillment “Abbe impacted my life in a system that seemed trajectory. BRANDEIS:

A LEGACY OF SERVICE AND BELONGING Ask most Brandeis alumni what they are grateful for and often you will receive the same response…the foundation for who I am today and the path I have chosen were directly impacted by my experience at the school. From its founding, Brandeis has been dedicated to instilling a lifelong passion for service and community. Gratitude for this connection was on full display as generations of Brandeis alumni and their families returned in support of critical Brandeis initiatives; Brandeis Giving Day which took place in November 2022 and the Fund-A-Need for tuition assistance which took place during this year’s in-person spring fundraiser in April. Aliza Lauter ‘12, a Food Systems Policy Officer for Global Policy & Advocacy at CARE, an international humanitarian organization working alongside women and girls globally to achieve social justice by fighting poverty and world hunger, exuberantly stepped up to support 2023 core fundraising campaign focused around Brandeis Giving Day. “The motivation for my work is intrinsically tied to the Jewish values I learned Aliza Lauter ‘12 from my family and cultivated at Brandeis. In Judaism we are taught that our responsibility to this world goes beyond ourselves and our immediate community. My early passion for understanding and addressing hunger and homelessness has evolved into my calling to work in the area of global food insecurity. So much of who I am today is because of my time at Brandeis. My experience there goes beyond the education I received. The values I cultivated and the community I still have today are the true impact of Brandeis, and I think I speak for so many alumni who share that same sentiment.” One of our key sponsors for the spring fundraiser was Adam Spiegel ‘94, President and Master Distiller at Corning & Company, who supplied the spirits from his world class distillery. Adam’s support was enthusiastic when approached, “Brandeis’s impact on my life has been significant. The supportive environment and the sense of community I experienced during my time there taught me the importance of giving back. I believe that Brandeis plays Adam Spiegel ‘94 a pivotal role not only in the San Francisco and Jewish communities but also in fostering values of education, community, and mutual support. Supporting the school is my way of giving back and ensuring that future generations have the same opportunities to thrive and grow.”

SPIRIT OF BRANDEIS RETURN TO YOSEMITE

2023 OR HADASH AWARD

In October 2022, Brandeis revived the beloved triannual community event, Sukkot in Yosemite, after a five-year hiatus due to the pandemic and wildfires. Over 180 families traveled to Yosemite Valley for several days of exploring hiking, meditating, praying, singing, and celebrating together.

RECIPIENT: KATIE ROSE

This community gathering invited us to experience awe at the natural wonders surrounding us while reorienting our perspective to the immediacy of the present moment. After four days of “wow” in the Sierra Nevada, there is no doubt the time nourished our spirits, strengthened our friendships, and imprinted memories deeply tied to the Brandeis experience. The trip included a community-wide celebration of havdalah upon arrival Saturday morning, and an Ushpzin walk to Mirror Lake followed by a rousing game of charades and storytelling about figures from the Torah. Families were invited to participate in the Sukkot morning service, and the days-long gathering reached its peak on the beach where kids splashed in the water and families picnicked together. While the Brandeis trip takes place every three years, there is a group of Brandeis families who have connected so deeply with this experience that since 2012 they have organized an annual trip to Yosemite for Sukkot with their class even in off-cycle years. One of those families is the Drummond-Dulberg family (Ilana, Sharon, Micha ’20, and Ella ‘23). Sharon shared, “each year as the kids got older our hikes got longer. We started with Vernal Falls, graduated to Nevada Falls, and our culminating experience was in 2023 when five of the eighth graders hiked up Half Dome together. It was an incredible accomplishment for our kids.”

“The Yosemite trip was a defining part of the Brandeis experience for our family. Because of this annual trip, we forged a special bond with other Brandeis families and Yosemite became a sacred palace of connection for our family.”

The Or Hadash (New Light) Award is presented to an extraordinary and committed parent volunteer who has given above and beyond and who serves as a model of volunteerism for us all. The recipient of the 20222023 award was Katie Rose. Katie has served in numerous capacities during her nineyear journey as a Brandeis parent. Her leadership and investment in our school demonstrated an unwavering dedication to L-R: Parents’ Association Co-Presidents Jason Pollack our community and Justine Simpson, Katie Rose, Dr. Dan Glass and our students. Her passion for the Book Fair over many years ensured that the event was consistently a tremendous success. In the critical role of The Brandeis Fund co-chair during consecutive years, Katie was instrumental in achieving 100% support from our 2021-2022 families, a feat never before accomplished in the history of our school. Additionally, Katie served as admissions volunteer, as team parent for volleyball, cross country, and basketball, and in planning Yosemite activities for her class. Above and beyond her exemplary volunteerism, Katie was known in our community for always bringing a positive attitude, warmth, kindness, and humor into everything she does at Brandeis. When collecting nominations for this year’s Or Hadash Award, these were just a few of the words community members used to describe Katie: Humble, Selfless, Heartwarming, Enthusiastic, Smiley, Committed, Warm, Thoughtful, Sharp, Driven, Focused, Kind. Katie and her husband, Avi, are the proud parents of recent Brandeis alumnus Simon Rose ‘23. Thank you, Katie, for your inspiring leadership!
