DEAR BRANDEIS COMMUNITY, There was a time, early in the pandemic that defined the 2020-2021 school year, when we felt unutterably distant from one another. Our homes had become islands, narrow places from which we ventured infrequently, with an ocean of Zoom between kids and their grandparents, friends, and other loved ones. I shared a Rosh Hashanah sermon at a local synagogue in those months, quoting Anne Boyer’s poem “My Common Heart,“ and its wish for a heart that could hold all “the sleeping and unsleeping, the visible and invisible crowd.“ The absence of connection outside the family unit was unceasingly present, a worry gnawing at the corners of our thoughts. So it is remarkable to me to look back now on 2020-2021, and realize how much it was defined by our community coming together. Here are just a few of the ways the Brandeis community stepped up, and showed up, and was present for each other through this year: • The Leadership Team coordinated daily temperature checks and symptom screenings, regular COVID testing, and convened meetings with a volunteer Medical Advisory Group, to keep our entire community safe, informed, and maintain a clean record of no spread of COVID among faculty, staff, or students while at school. • The Board of Trustees led our entire community in raising $130,000 beyond our budgeted Brandeis Fund goal to cover the costs of hiring ten additional Teacher’s Aide positions so that we could bring students back to campus five days a week for the lower school and four days a week for the middle school. • The Parents’ Association worked with school leadership to create the “Holidays at Home“ program, bringing our community together even in distance to celebrate important milestones of the Jewish calendar. Even as we coalesced for the good of our students in the immediate term, we also continued to invest in the long-term vision for Brandeis, increasing the total donations to the Brandeis 2023 Campaign to $1.7M.

This annual report is published once a year to recognize pledges and gifts received in the fiscal year. The unaudited financial information set forth in this report is preliminary and subject to adjustments and modifications. We sincerely regret any errors or omissions. If you have any corrections or changes, please contact the development office at 415-406-1035 or development@sfbrandeis.org.

There is a phrase that is sometimes shared in Jewish communities: “may you go from strength to strength,“ or mechayil el chayil in Hebrew. The strength that the saying speaks of is the strength we felt this past year: chayil also means hosts, armies, large groups—it is the strength of many, coming together. I am so grateful for the strength of this community, and to every one of you who has been a part of holding it strong. May we continue to go from strength to strength! Warmly,

Dr. Dan Glass Head of School

ROGRAM HIGHLIGHT 2

THE RESILIENCE OF OUR COMMUNITY Adaptability, collaboration, creativity, communication, and preparation are the ideals the Brandeis administration, faculty, staff, and facilities team invoked when preparing for the 2020-2021 school year. As we made plans to bring our students back to campus, providing for their physical safety while addressing the emotional and spiritual impacts due to the pandemic, were at the forefront of our collective awareness and were paramount to maintaining the confidence of our community to ensure the return could be sustained. With Martin Lipman at the helm of the facilities team, over $150,000 of health and safety improvements and upgrades were implemented across the campus. This included the construction and installation of hand washing stations by every door, touchless water dispensers in the gym, middle school and lower school buildings, and an outdoor tented teacher’s lounge, only to name a few. In conjunction with the physical upgrades, health protocols such as daily symptoms screening, temperature checks, school-wide testing and the hiring of a school nurse, all played an important role that sustained and secured a return to in-person learning. Brandeis strove to address the ever-changing complexities of reopening with an eye towards holistically addressing the practical needs of making learning accessible, whether in the classroom or while learning from home. Providing iPads, laptop computers, learning apps, and distributing school supplies to every Brandeis student prior to the start of the school year were critical to implementing

an instructional model that was flexible and could take place on campus or from home. It also meant providing professional development for faculty on the use of virtual learning platforms and new ways to dynamically engage students in online learning, especially for our youngest learners. We also had to re-envision our curriculum in order to sustain stable cohorts in the classroom, and reconfigure our learning spaces so that students could eat and play safely together. The return to the 2020-2021 school year looked nothing like the Brandeis so many of us know and upended what new families hoped to experience. However, finding ways to engage our families both from a school standpoint and a community perspective were critical to building and growing community at Brandeis. This meant families were invited to explore new virtual engagements from backto-school nights to lighting up their living rooms in a school-wide Hanukkah celebration, and then when it was safe, hosting outdoor events on campus to celebrate our volunteers and graduates to close out the school year. Thank you to every member of our community who placed the school at the center of your lives with generous support. It made an incredible difference in how we were able to respond to the challenges of last year and we came out stronger because of the immeasurable ways you demonstrated your commitment and care for the school, our students, faculty and staff, and each other.

REINVENTING ARTS INTEGRATION IN THE TIME OF COVID The pandemic era exercised the need and capacity for using creative and adaptive approaches to preserve the art and maker education programs for the lower school. To limit exposure on campus by maintaining stable cohorts and teaching teams, one specialist teacher was assigned to each grade to integrate art and maker education with literacy, social studies, math and science, in order to showcase the benefits and beauty of cross-curricular integration. One highlight of the integrated curriculum was librarian, artist, and social justice advocate Bel Beeson who teamed up with the fourth grade to foster the love of literacy in students with a reading list that included books with themes of social justice

and LGBTQIA+ issues, such as Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You by Jason Reynolds. Ms. Beeson opened the door to colorful literary experiences with graphic novel writing, research, and digital media education that culminated in students designing murals with a social justice issue theme. As part of the project, mural artist Sean Bullwen whose work is featured throughout the Bay Area, met and spoke with each student about their work.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION ARE CELEBRATED AT BRANDEIS From the classroom to the dining room to the conference room, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) was at the forefront of Brandeis’ collective conscience in 2020-2021. In a year that was marked by an unprecedented and remarkable social awakening, the Brandeis community embraced the opportunity to dive in and make a difference. The existing faculty and staff DEI committee was joined by the newly formed Parents’ Association and Board of Trustees DEI committees to explore and develop a more comprehensive, informed, and activated leadership role in the school. As is often the case, our students were already leading this charge, asking questions that called for a broadening of our awareness, then transforming that awareness into action. Harkening to the Hebrew word shema, meaning to “obey“ or “listen,“ the intention of listening is inextricably linked to the words, obeying or doing. The unfolding partnership between leadership, faculty, and students saw this action played out in every classroom. The following initiatives, highlighted below, were celebrated throughout the 2020-2021 school year. • The student-led Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) empowered students to explore, express, and celebrate their gender identities, and to thoughtfully consider how our community might integrate new pronouns into everyday life.

• The Lit Circles Program, offered to second through fourth grade, provided an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in stories focusing on DEI topics including gender, LGBTQIA+, race/ethnicity/culture, socioeconomics, and ableism. • School booklists and library displays featured stories and voices from protagonists that have been traditionally underrepresented in literature. • Teachers reshaped and expanded their curriculum to include creative thinking aimed at fostering a more equitable world. • Middle school teachers integrated land acknowledgments at Brandeis into their practices, propelling conversations around land, ownership, and colonialism. • Teachers revamped their books and materials to better answer to teaching DEI. Thank you families, students, teachers, and staff. You continue to amaze and inspire change, locally and globally, by creating a more inclusive, embracing, and open society! Tikkun olam in action.

CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY

THE SEFF FAMILY

A MESSAGE FROM

THE BOARD CHAIR

AMY, JON, LIVY AND KYLE “You get what you put in“ seems to be a recurring theme for the Seff family. The path leading to Brandeis married the intersection of Jewish values, community, and education in a powerful way for Amy and Jon. With fraternal twins, Livy and Kyle, searching for the perfect school was a complicated path, until they discovered Brandeis. “We felt that Brandeis resonated with our values and would instill a love of Jewish culture and learning in our children. We especially loved the warm and welcoming community that we could feel at the outset of our communications and relationship with Brandeis. Brandeis felt like a school that would serve both Livy and Kyle well and meet both of their learning styles and needs. Additionally, the Jewish learning and holiday programming meant a lot to us, as well as the social emotional work that Brandeis continues to strive to improve. We love the maker and STEM components, as well as the strength of the academics. Most of all, we love the programming that models integrity, kindness, and service. We could not agree with those values more.“ After losing Amy’s parents, the Jewish piece of Brandeis became even more important. The Seff family suddenly had to re-envision how to bring “being Jewish“ into their home. For Amy, her connections with wonderful parents at Brandeis, like Jacqueline Shelton-Miller, helped her find ways to bring Judaism into their home on a regular basis. “As a family, we have gone through such difficult times with losing three of our parents between 2017 and 2020, and Brandeis has served as a major source of support for us. We have such gratitude to the Brandeis community, faculty, and staff. We feel lucky and grateful to have had such a supportive whole family experience in Brandeis.“ This sense of community and belonging has inspired in both Amy and Jon a strong commitment to Brandeis and the work being done at the school, including major giving in support of the Brandeis 2023 Campaign and this past year’s spring fundraiser, Here Comes the Sun, as co-chairs. “We feel that we have gotten so much from Brandeis that we want to give back, and we are lucky enough to have the means to do so. We want Brandeis to continue to be a successful institution—to provide kids and families the amazing education and community it already does.“ Service and engagement have become second nature for the Seff family at Brandeis. From volunteering as a room parent every year to serving as co-chair of the honey sale, dressing up as a shark and giant orange fish as mystery readers in the first grade, to helping on the admissions

4

and advancement committees, the sense of belonging and commitment to the success and health of the community has been key. “We feel certain that all of us, Amy, Jon, Livy and Kyle, have developed and explored our Jewish heritage and roots and connections in a deep way that would never have happened had Livy and Kyle not attended Brandeis.“

Dear Brandeis Community, After everything we’ve experienced over the past months, it seems important to stop and reflect. Indeed, as challenging and difficult as this time has been, there is much to be grateful for and to look forward to.

Thank you, Amy and Jon, for being such valued and cherished members of our Brandeis family and for being beloved examples of service, generosity, and engagement.

As a community, The Brandeis School of San Francisco came through the last year with continued resilience, persistence, and a strengthened commitment to the unparalleled value of a Brandeis education for our students. As our students continued to learn and grow, as we leaned on one another, and shared traditions such as grade-level tefillot, the tzedek project, and graduation, we felt renewed appreciation for the role that Brandeis plays in our lives.

“As a community, The Brandeis School of San Francisco came through the last year with continued resilience, persistence, and a strengthened commitment to the unparalleled value of a Brandeis education for our students.”

This took an incredible effort on the part of many people. The Board of Trustees continued to move the mission of Brandeis forward and advance the vision set out in the Brandeis 2023 Strategic Plan, while also focusing on the urgent needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are inspired by the continued extraordinary leadership of our Head of School, Dr. Dan Glass, who worked together with the Leadership Team and with the support of the Board of Trustees to bring our students, faculty, and staff safely back to campus. We appreciate all the administration, faculty, and staff members at Brandeis who worked so hard to educate, nurture, and inspire our students. We are grateful for the many ways parents and community members supported our school and our broader community. And we are motivated by our students, who have learned to navigate our everchanging world with awe-inspiring capability.

Although my tenure as Board Chair was not what I expected, I am grateful to have had this opportunity to serve our community during this time. I look forward to the years ahead under the leadership of our new Board Chair, Dr. Jonathan Terdiman. Thank you to each of you for exemplifying our core values of kindness (chesed), integrity (ometz lev), and service (tikkun olam). Hadara Stanton Hersh Chair, Board of Trustees 2019-2020 2020-2021

THE POWER OF PARTICIPATION The generosity, commitment, and participation of our parent community made an invaluable difference in the life of our school and the education of our students last year. Ninety-two percent of parents made a gift to the 2020-2021 Brandeis Fund and together contributed more than $390,000 toward our $551,000 total. Thank you for coming together to enrich the educational experience of every student at Brandeis. Every gift truly makes a difference!

GRANDPARENTS & SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY In a year of social distancing, technology became a vital point of contact for one very special segment of our community; our Grandparents and Special Friends who joined us virtually to celebrate Brandeis and our students. From virtual challah baking lessons to a conversation with celebrated author and Brandeis grandparent, Dr. Ruth Nemzoff who shared creative ways to maintain a close relationship with grandchildren using old and new technologies in “Grandparenting During the Pandemic,” we found new ways to build connection. The spring culminated with a series of Grandparents and Special Friends days where Brandeis students and their guests virtually gathered together in classrooms to celebrate Shabbat and visit with each other. The spirit of our community at large was full of gratitude and for that we say “Todah Rabah.”

“Thank you very much for the opportunity to visit with my grandkids, and take a virtual part in their classes. The initiative is a great idea and proved very meaningful and very emotional for me especially as we live so far away.” –ODED AMIR (Grandfather of students Assaf ‘22, Shaul ‘27, and Michael Brajtmen ‘29)

In April, our community came together for a fabulous and festive virtual spring fundraiser, “Here Comes the Sun.“ We shared a wonderful evening of music, entertainment, laughter and joy, including an inspired performance from The Trebles, and an alumni video tribute featuring alumna Teresa Strasser ‘82. We are grateful for our generous community, whose combined contributions resulted in more than $297,000 to support tuition assistance and the educational experience of our students. Thank you to the generous donors who contributed auction items and hosted virtual and in-person count-me-parties and packages. The creativity, time, and talent of our volunteers and donors to the auction resulted in an amazing event. Everyone who participated in this virtual celebration joined together to give back to Brandeis and to spread the gift of a Brandeis education.

THANK YOU to our volunteers whose leadership, creativity, and dedication made this event possible.

BRANDEIS ALUMNI MAKING A DIFFERENCE This year, we were fortunate to welcome back two very special alumni in support of key Brandeis initiatives, Brandeis Giving Day, and the Fund-A-Need for tuition assistance which took place during our virtual spring fundraiser. San Francisco City Supervisor Rafael Mandelman ‘88 and Emmy-Award winning writer, television host, and radio personality, Teresa Strasser ‘82 stepped up to help Brandeis raise vital funds for our school.

Mr. Mandelman was passionate about his experience at Brandeis and how the generosity of our community supported him. “Tzedakah was one of the core Jewish values I learned about as a Brandeis student all those decades ago, along with the notion of transmitting our Jewish cultural heritage across the generations. I received financial aid and was able to afford my education at Brandeis only because of the generosity of others. Today we all have the opportunity to pay it forward to another generation.” Ms. Strasser made a guest appearance at the spring fundraiser, ‘Here Comes the Sun,’ offering a direct appeal to support the tuition assistance program at Brandeis, a program that directly benefited her education. “You want students from different backgrounds to learn from each other and have difference socioeconomic backgrounds. That is one of the things that makes Brandeis so special. There is no way I could have gone to Brandeis without financial assistance. My life was forever changed.” Thank you Rafael and Teresa, you make all of us at Brandeis proud.

“My goal for the Tzedek Program is twofold. First is to raise awareness of the needs that exist in their community and the non-profit organizations that are working to help. Second is for the students to find their passion and to be inspired to actively engage with their community to make a difference.” –Dr. Jody Bloom

THE SPIRIT OF TZEDAKAH BEGINS AT BRANDEIS

The nationally recognized Tzedek Program, a yearlong service learning curriculum focused on leadership and philanthropy, is one of the highlights of our seventh grade. Through this program, seventh grade students gain a deep understanding about their obligation to give tzedakah and learn about the different needs that exist in their community and the world, and how to make educated philanthropic choices. With the funds pooled together by seventh grade families, in lieu of bar/bat mitzvah gifts, seventh graders in 2021 were able to administer over $18,600 in grants to fourteen local and international organizations.

The recipient of the 2020-21 award is Jessica England, who was recognized for her volunteerism, generosity of time and talent, dedication, and leadership. Jessica and her husband, Jamie, are parents of Josie ‘21, Layla ’26, and Tyler ‘28.

“I believe how you choose to spend your time is the truest expression of your values and that volunteering is a responsibility all of us have. Helping Brandeis stay a community that is economically diverse and where there is room for educational innovation is important to me, which is why my work on the Annual Fund has been meaningful. I love our community and believe you can only get out what you put in which is why I have so valued being a Room Parent. I have watched and learned much about who I wish to be in the community by looking up to parents whose values and way of conducting themselves I admire and who I have tried to emulate. Through volunteering at Brandeis, I have been lucky enough to make many wonderful friends, deepen relationships, and make a difference for our students and community!”
