M E S S A G E FR O M THE P R E SID E NT I don’t get as much mail as I used to.

I believe that’s because our community’s collaborative spirit of giving has never been stronger.

Emails? Absolutely, yes — more than ever. But an actual letter?

Those have become rare.

Despite the challenges we’ve weathered over the last 18 months, there’s a widespread desire to do good and push for better that’s pulsating throughout our community. You can literally feel the momentum. People love Sioux Falls, and more than ever, they want to step forward to help make this special place even better.

However, at fairly regular intervals, a letter from Joe Floyd will land on my desk.

Joe, as many of you know, is a tremendously generous individual who has for years used the Foundation to assist with his personal philanthropy.

The purpose of his letters are to initiate grants from his donor advised fund at the Foundation. Many donors recommend grants online or via email, but Joe uses his letters to carefully share details about the organization he’s supporting — its successes, challenges and opportunities. He outlines the work he’s done to verify the quality of the organization and the reasons he wants to provide support.

On more than one occasion, the Foundation has even followed up with an organization Joe writes about in his letters to learn more and to provide additional support.

Helping donors realize their philanthropic wishes, and collaborating with area nonprofits, civic leaders and community members to help enrich and impact our area is the essence of our mission here at the Community Foundation. Bringing people together to create a brighter tomorrow is at the core of what we do here — and last year, we did a lot of it.

And they’re stepping forward with generosity.

In our last fiscal year, we received more than $50 million in gifts to charitable funds held at the Community Foundation.

And, we’re proud to say that, in partnership with our growing community of donors, during that same timeframe we granted more than $24 million to nonprofits.

We often say that philanthropy is about far more than gifts and assets. At its core, philanthropy is about people helping people.

It’s about collaborating together for the common good. What a joy it has been to witness how philanthropy is helping to solve some of our community’s most complex challenges, while also realizing the opportunities of tomorrow.

Because of its many contributions to our area, South Dakota News Watch has been named the Foundation’s 2021 Community Spirit Award recipient.

The award recognizes a nonprofit grantee which has used its grant to drive change, engage in dialogue and spark new ideas.

SOLUTIONS-FOCUSED The Foundation’s competitive grant-making programs awarded nearly $800,000 in grants in Fiscal Year 2020-21. These grants supported local nonprofits and ideas designed to make our community stronger.

FINDING

SOLUTIONS PUSHING FOR ACCOUNTABILITY, DRIVING CHANGE In 2014, Jack Marsh and Randell Beck got to talking over coffee. The two veteran journalists were concerned about “dwindling resources dedicated to in-depth, investigative journalism throughout the country,” Marsh said.

“We know those who are informed about the issues and challenges facing their communities are also more likely to join movements and efforts designed to bring about positive change. They’re also more likely to engage in solutions-focused dialogue. That’s central to what we do at the Community Foundation and it’s why we’re proud to support South Dakota News Watch.”

Due to ongoing struggles within the news industry, many newsrooms are smaller and reporters are fewer. However, the issues facing our communities have never been greater, Marsh explained. The public’s growing mistrust of traditional news media combined with an explosion of misinformation being spread on social media have created what Marsh calls “a crisis in our democracy.”

“The First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press and recognizes the importance of a vigilant Fourth Estate to hold our government and our institutions accountable,” Marsh said. “But if you don’t have journalists out there serving in a watchdog role, bad things still can happen.”

So Marsh and Beck decided to do something. They talked with other thought-leaders across South Dakota to determine whether their concerns were shared by others.

They were. Marsh and Beck asked if the Community Foundation would provide a grant to help them explore the feasibility of creating a nonprofit, independent news organization. We did. And in 2017, South Dakota News Watch was founded with a mission to produce statewide investigative and public-service journalism.

Since then, thanks to additional grant support from our Community Fund, the endowment behind our most impactful grant-making, News Watch has become an award-winning news organization, publishing nearly 300 in-depth stories examining complex issues across a broad range of topics — many of which have a direct impact on the Sioux Falls area. It’s also making a difference. Since 2018, News Watch investigations have prompted dozens of legislative bills intended to improve the lives of South Dakotans.

But News Watch is about far more than just investigating and reporting on the challenges facing our community. It’s also about finding solutions. While they dig deep to research challenges and push for accountability, News Watch reporters also are working to explore solutions and engage the public through online forums and town hall-style discussions focused on community problem-solving.

Welcome to the future — where journalism is for the greater good and where professional journalists explore not only the issues we face, but also where we can do better and how we can find solutions.

SHIFTING GEARS SHIFT Garage provides reliable transportation to those living in poverty — a mission accomplished through the repair of existing vehicles and by placing donated vehicles with families and individuals in need. Led by Joe Smith and originally based in Rapid City, a recent grant from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation helped the nonprofit open a second location in Sioux Falls. SUPPORTING INNOVATION During a school year where teachers and students navigated uncharted waters and weathered difficult challenges due to the pandemic, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation stepped forward to help through our Excellence in Education Initiative. The program offers grants to teachers who have innovative ideas for classroom projects. COLLABORATIVE ART PROJECTS BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER, FOR GOOD “Using art to activate people and places is a powerful way to drive positive change.”

Each year, we commission an original piece of art from a local artist to feature in our annual report. For us, it’s a way to support our local artists, share their stories and, hopefully, ignite a spark in others. Over the years we’ve curated an extensive collection and today, each piece hangs in our office, located in the historic Depot at Cherapa Place.

But this year is different. This year our cover features the work of not one artist, but many. It’s been an amazing collaboration led by local artist Zach DeBoer.

It began with “Beacon,” a sculpture by Clark Martinek featured in this year’s SculptureWalk and sponsored by the Community Foundation. “Beacon” was then photographed by local nature photographer Paul Schiller. From there, DeBoer took over, dividing and printing Schiller’s image into 35 separate square images.

Next, he led a painting class for the staff at Children’s Inn, offering tips and techniques on how to recreate their small portion of the image onto their 4” x 4” canvas board using acrylic paints. From there, staff worked with guests of Children’s Inn over the following week to paint the remaining images. Lastly, DeBoer assembled the pieces, recreating Schiller’s original image — with a unique look.

The project was inspired by Martinek’s “Beacon” sculpture, said Mary Kolsrud, the Foundation’s vice president for philanthropy.

“Here at the Foundation, we have the privilege of helping people do good things through philanthropy. And what we hear so often is that people who engage in charitable giving do so not out of obligation, but rather, because they are inspired — because of a beacon somewhere along the way that sparked a desire to make a difference,” she said.

“In this year’s annual report, we’re also featuring our long-standing collaboration with Children’s Inn — an organization that serves as a beacon of hope for so many individuals and families who have been impacted by domestic violence and abuse,” she said. “So to have staff and guests of Children’s Inn participate in this project has been especially meaningful for us.”

DeBoer titled the piece “Telephone” after remarking that the process of creating the piece was like an artistic game of Telephone — beginning with Martinek’s original sculpture being interpreted through the lens of Schiller’s camera. From there, Schiller’s work was then recreated by dozens of others under DeBoer’s guidance.

"Telephone" is the latest in a series of collaborative and public art projects DeBoer has led.

A native of Brandon, and a graduate of the University of South Dakota, DeBoer says he sees art as a tool for community change.

“Using art to activate people and places is a powerful way to drive positive change,” DeBoer said. “One of the biggest factors to a city’s success is if the people who live there love it. When they do, they care about it and invest in making it better. Public art, and especially collaborative public art, is a great way to bolster community pride and civic engagement in cities of any size.”

To that end, DeBoer has led mural projects in Sioux Falls, Clear Lake, Centerville and Canton. Each piece, he said, seeks to tell the story of the city it represents.

“Murals can be a great way to bring a community together. My goal is to help people identify the things in their town that are unique and important to who they are; things they should be celebrating.” he said. “I feel like there are a lot of towns that are in danger of losing sight of those things. My hope is that my work can help unify communities by shining a light on what makes them special.”

SPOTLIGHTING THE ARTS The arts scene in Sioux Falls has never been more vibrant and, even amid a pandemic, local artists have continued to create, innovate and inspire. Today, two new, free publications led by arts advocate Luke Tatge are showcasing locally produced theatre, dance, comedy, music, and visual arts — helping more people than ever to find opportunities to connect and engage with the arts.

TRANSFORMING UTILITY INTO ART The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has been proud to serve as the fiscal sponsor for a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative to bring original art to 26 utility boxes throughout the city’s downtown area.

According to Kellen Boice, executive director of the Sioux Falls Arts Council, the project aimed to highlight a wide variety artists in the community of Sioux Falls.

The Arts Council worked with the City of Sioux Falls, Downtown Sioux Falls Inc., the Multi-Cultural Center, Lutheran Social Services and other nonprofits to extend the call for art.

Today, the boxes are found between Sixth and 14 th streets, from Minnesota Avenue to just east of Phillips Avenue. Each box features a QR code so visitors can learn more about the artist behind each work, including through audio recordings.

BRIGHTER TOMORROW A NEW CHAPTER IN PHILANTHROPY Odds are, when most of us think of retirement, we think about slowing down a bit.

That’s not the case for Tim and Nancee Sturdevant.

In fact, this local couple sees their retirement as the beginning of a new chapter which includes new opportunities to make a difference through philanthropy and community-building.

“To know that your gift can make a difference — that it can make an impact in someone’s life — that’s life-changing not only for those who are receiving the gift, it’s life-changing for the giver as well.”

NANCEE STURDEVANT

The transition feels natural, Nancee said, since giving back has always been central to their lives, both professionally and personally.

Tim previously served as president of Sturdevant’s Auto Parts, a company well known for its philanthropic efforts, including corporate charitable giving in communities throughout its five-state service area. Wanting to take the business to the next level, last December Tim announced he was selling Sturdevant’s to Auto Parts Headquarters, a third-generation, familyowned auto parts distributor based in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Nancee has served in leadership roles for human service organizations throughout her career, including the Helpline Center and EmBe, and has also spent time spearheading different volunteer efforts throughout the community, even serving on several of the Foundation’s grants committees.

“Giving back has always been important to us,” Nancee said. “We’ve seen the joy, and felt the joy, that philanthropy brings. We love this community and want to do what we can to make it an even better place. We’re excited to explore new aspects of philanthropy as we begin our retirement.”

After announcing the sale of Sturdevant’s, the couple turned to the Community Foundation to establish their charitable giving plans. Today, they have a donor advised charitable fund and an endowment fund at the Foundation.

“When we sold the company, it was just a no-brainer that we wanted to start working with the Foundation,” Tim said. “The reputation of the Foundation, the caliber of the people here and their expertise makes it so easy. And the help we get with managing our funds has been great.”

The couple also chose the Foundation because of a desire to involve their children and future generations of their family in their philanthropic pursuits.

“We really appreciate the opportunity, working with the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, to deepen our outreach and make an even greater difference. As our kids were growing up, we tried to role model the importance of philanthropy. But now, working with the Foundation, we see so many opportunities for our children to be more deeply involved in our family’s philanthropy,” Nancee said. “And, God-willing, maybe someday our grandchildren will be helping with the endowment and making decisions with that. There are many new opportunities to give back as we begin this next chapter in our lives and it’s meaningful to know our family legacy will live on to help future generations.”

STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY

T H R O U G H E D U C AT I O N HELPING STUDENTS AND SUPPORTING WORKFORCE NEEDS From a young age, Anisha Gurung knew she wanted to spend her life helping others.

She grew up in a refugee camp in Nepal with her parents and two siblings. It was a tough life, but the family worked hard to find happiness and joy wherever they could. However, when Gurung was just seven years old, her mom suffered a massive stroke and later died due to a lack of medical equipment in the camp.

The family was crushed.

“Because of the support the Community Foundation provides, we can be nimble and innovative to serve the needs of students, to meet the needs of area employers, and to strengthen our region.”

“It was so hard. My mother’s last wish was to see me become successful and happy,” Gurung recalls.

Two years later, Gurung’s father moved the family to Sioux Falls to start over. He took a job at Smithfield and worked hard to provide opportunities for his children.

With memories of her mother always on her mind, Gurung became determined to find a way to help others. She made the decision to pursue a career in healthcare and today, the 2021 Washington High School graduate is enrolled in the Medical Assistant Program at Southeast Technical College.

The year-long program is an investment for Gurung’s family, but thanks to a long-standing collaboration between the Community Foundation and Southeast Tech that includes scholarships, grant support and annual distributions from endowments, it’s never been easier for Gurung and other students to pursue their educational dreams.

The Southeast Tech Foundation first established an endowment at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation nearly 20 years ago. Since then, individuals, families and businesses have established nearly 30 different scholarship endowments at the Community Foundation to benefit Southeast Tech students. These scholarships not only help to ease the financial burden for students as they pursue a wide variety of academic programs, they also directly impact the state’s workforce. According to Southeast Tech’s most recent Career Outcomes report, 89 percent of its 2020 graduates are working in South Dakota.

Stephen Williamson is the Foundation Director at Southeast Tech. He says the collaboration with the Community Foundation plays a key role in helping Southeast Tech advance its mission to educate students for careers that meet the workforce needs of the region.

And if we can help meet our workforce needs, we’ll build a stronger community, said Patrick Gale, the Foundation’s vice president for community investment.

“From working with industry leaders to develop relevant academic programs that meet the needs of our workforce, to preparing students for meaningful careers in those fields, Southeast Tech has been a key driver of economic development across our area for more than 50 years,” Gale said. “It’s an honor for the Community Foundation to help this important organization work toward its mission.”

“Kate” and her young daughter arrived at the door of Children’s Inn late one night just over a year ago. It wasn’t the first time her husband had hit her — he’d been doing it for years, always careful to land punches to her stomach or back so the bruises couldn’t easily be seen — but this was the first time he’d hit their daughter.

As scared as she was to leave — he told her he’d really hurt her if she tried to run, plus, she didn’t work, and had no money of her own to support herself — she knew she had to make a change.

She arrived at Children’s Inn feeling scared, hopeless and alone, but the staff quickly welcomed her with open arms.

“People arrive at Children’s Inn in a variety of different ways. Sometimes with law enforcement, sometimes on their own, or another agency refers them. Depending on how they arrive, that affects how they may be feeling. There’s a lot of anxiety, a lot of fear, a lot of unknown. Some people come with bruises. Some people come literally fearing for their lives,” explained Amy Carter, program director for Children’s Inn. “Our goal is that when they call or just show up, that there’s someone here to accept them, wherever they’re at, with whatever they’re going through.”

Arriving at the door is the first step. From there, staff at Children’s Inn begin the work of helping victims rebuild their lives. In addition to shelter services, the organization also provides meals and transportation, counseling services, parenting education, support groups, safety planning, community referrals, community education and more.

It’s essential work — and it’s made possible thanks, in part, to a long-standing collaboration with the Community Foundation. For decades, endowments held at the Foundation have been providing Children’s Inn with long-term, sustainable sources of annual revenue to help advance its mission — a mission that’s more critical today than ever before.

As the population of Sioux Falls has grown, so, too, has the need for domestic violence services and shelter. As a matter of fact, for the last six years, Children’s Inn has been at or above capacity the majority of the time.

Which is why today, Children’s Inn is embarking on its next chapter — a new, 48,000 square-foot facility featuring enhanced dining facilities, larger family rooms, increased indoor and outdoor play spaces, additional room for case management and support services, and more beds. Once it’s open, the new facility will be equipped to serve more men, women and children who are victims of violence.

And as Children’s Inn begins a new era, the Foundation will continue to be there to help this critical program continue to serve our neighbors in need.

COMMUNITY CELEBRATING THE WORK OF GENE JOHNSON, FOUNDER OF THE BRANDON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Gene Johnson was known as a successful business owner and a dedicated family-man who loved his community and had a heart for helping others.

“Although Gene, and others from the original board have passed on, their legacy remains strong and still inspires our work.

We continue our work to grow the fund, but we also reap the benefits by giving out grants to local nonprofits that make a difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors.”

“After he passed away (in 2016), we heard story after story of things he had done to help people,” said Johnson’s daughter, Erin Doll.

“If he saw something he could fix or someone who needed a hand, he would step up to help.”

That included helping the community he loved, Doll said. “He had a hand in helping Brandon grow, and he wanted to help it succeed,” she said.

So it was no surprise when Johnson announced an idea to start a foundation that could help enhance the Brandon community and improve the lives of people and families who call it home.

He moved the idea forward by organizing an inaugural Board of Directors which ultimately developed a plan to ask 300 people for $100 — that $30,000 would establish the endowment behind the Brandon Community Foundation.

“People told him it would take two years to raise the money,” Johnson’s wife, Diane, remembered. “It took them two months.”

Johnson and the Board worked hard to make it happen. And their hard work has continued to pay off. Today, as the Brandon Community Foundation celebrates its 15 th anniversary with an endowment which has surpassed $1 million, it continues to carry out Johnson’s vision for building a stronger community.

And the organization’s impact has never been greater. To date, the Foundation has granted more than $275,000 to nonprofits and causes throughout the Brandon area — impacting the lives of all those who call this special place home today, while creating possibilities for future generations.

The ability to impact the future was something that appealed to Johnson, Doll remembers.

“I remember him talking about how it would be something permanent — something that would last forever,” Doll said. “That was the thing that really appealed to him about a community foundation. He was willing to help get it started, but he knew it would last well beyond his time.”

Doll said her dad would be proud of the good work the Foundation is doing today. “I think the Foundation has a real unifying effect on our community — I think he’d be pretty excited to see that,” she said.

OUR 2021 FRIEND OF THE FOUNDATION HONOREES Paul and Mary Ellen Connelly have a simple philosophy when it comes to giving back: If not us, who? And if not now, when?

A willingness to step forward — as volunteers, as philanthropists, and as advocates for important causes — has defined this long-time Sioux Falls couple for years. And it all stems back to some good advice an old friend once shared, they said.

“A friend once told me, if you want something done, don’t wait on other people.

Take care of it yourself,” Paul said. “So that’s what we’ve tried to do as far as our giving.”

People Helping People A native of Minneapolis and a graduate of St. Thomas University, Paul moved to Sioux Falls in 1965 to begin working for Culligan. A decade later, he purchased the business and continued to grow it for the next 30 years. He retired in 2006 and passed the business on to his son, Alex.

Mary Ellen grew up in Mount Vernon, South Dakota. While majoring in microbiology at Colorado State University, she took a summer class at Augustana University in Sioux Falls.

During that summer, she met Paul and they married the following December. They’ve made their home in Sioux Falls ever since.

Both Paul and Mary Ellen say they view philanthropy in its truest form — as people helping people.

Mary Ellen remembers her parents stepping forward to help others in her hometown.

“It was a small town and people looked after each other,” she said. “Everyone pitched in to help the community as a whole.”

Paul recalls being impacted by a family friend who served as a mentor for him during his teenage years. Later, after receiving a scholarship to attend St. Thomas, he felt the call to give back.

“I knew when I finished school that I wanted to pay that scholarship forward. I wanted to give that gift of education to someone else,” he said.

When it comes to their charitable giving, the Connellys support various areas but are especially passionate about education.

Over the years, in partnership with the Community Foundation and the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation, the couple have established charitable funds to help support teachers at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.

Parks and conservation are other areas they care deeply about, and their work in these sectors spans across decades.

They've worked to establish a fund at the Foundation in collaboration with Sioux Falls Beautiful to provide grants to improve core Sioux Falls neighborhoods. Mary Ellen was also among the founding members of the Shoto Teien Japanese Garden Committee, a group that worked to rescue a portion of Terrace Park from disrepair. An endowment held at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation provides sustainable funding for the continued care of the Garden even today.

Improving food security is another passion area, and, for several years, the couple has worked to lead a matching gift campaign for Feeding South Dakota on Giving Tuesday.

Through all of their philanthropic endeavors, working with the Community Foundation has been “the gift that keeps on giving,” Mary Ellen said, describing the Foundation as a resourceful organization that drives results.

Above all, the couple says their giving reflects their love for the community they’ve called home for more than 50 years.

“Sioux Falls is home. It’s family. It’s friends,” they said. “So we want to do what we can to help make it an even better place.”

INVESTMENT OVERVIEW At our core, we operate with a dual purpose. We take seriously our responsibility to serve as good stewards of donors’ charitable assets, as well as our responsibility to serve the beneficiaries of those assets.

How We Invest Offering unmatched experience and expertise, the Foundation's Investment Management Committee seeks long-term growth, diversification and limited fees. It utilizes a model created by the South Dakota Investment Council to help guide the asset allocation within the Long-Term Portfolio. While the long-term allocation remains 75% equity and 25% cash and fixed income, the model — based upon current equity valuations — helps set short-term, tactical portfolio targets.

FISCAL YEAR IN REVIEW Looking back on our last fiscal year, the investment model’s focus on equity valuations and adherence to tactical targets helped inform investment decisions for the near and long-term.

We saw equity markets start strong, briefly decline, and then gain momentum in the latter months of 2020. January posted a negative return for the S&P 500, but then posted strong returns each month to the close of our fiscal year on June 30, 2021.

As domestic equity indexes maintained high price-to-earnings ratios, the investment model utilized by the Foundation continued to recommend the Long-Term Portfolio maintain the minimum equity allocation of 65%.

The portfolio invests 56% of the equity allocation internationally between developed (39%) and emerging markets (17%). Domestically, the investment model favors value over growth and recently shifted to a minimum Large Cap allocation.

The Investment Management Committee will continue to employ disciplined investment management strategies that take into account valuations, interest rates, inflation and volatility. Maintaining a significant cash allocation, choosing low cost, high quality investments, and reviewing guidance from the South Dakota Investment Council, well-positions the Investment Committee to make strategic investments as opportunities arise.

During the year, the portfolio’s cash tactical target decreased from 16% to 14%, which should continue to provide sufficient flexibility in volatile periods.
