LOOKING AHEAD

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Since our doors first opened nearly 40 years ago, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has been working to inspire charitable giving that helps enrich our community and improves the quality of life for people and families across our area.

While our mission is, and will always be, our North Star, the way we pursue it and advance it is always evolving. As our community grows and changes, as challenges and opportunities surface, and as we learn from our nonprofit partners about what’s working and what isn’t, we’re always reexamining how philanthropy can help develop solutions for some of our most pressing issues.

There’s no doubt that philanthropy has helped shape Sioux Falls into the vibrant city it is today. But, I would argue that in the coming years, philanthropy has the potential to play an even greater role in addressing some of our most complex challenges — issues like homelessness, after-school care for our kids, addiction, and mental health.

Over our last fiscal year, we’ve been proud to work with civic leaders, nonprofits and community members to help study these issues, foster dialogue around potential solutions, and explore if or how philanthropy can help.

As we look forward to continuing this work in the year ahead, we also celebrate the extraordinary ways philanthropy is impacting our community today. In the pages that follow, you’ll meet neighbors who are enriching our area through their creativity and generosity, you’ll meet nonprofits who are working to serve those in need, and you’ll meet volunteers who are stepping forward in service and leadership.

The spirit of philanthropy is about people helping people for the greater good of all, and that spirit is alive and well across our community. We are a community of givers, and I’m certain that, by working together, we’ll continue to find ways to build and strengthen this special place we all call home.

Thanks, as always, for believing in our mission, and for supporting our community.

Sincerely,

ON THE COVER

THE HELPLINE CENTER'S NETWORK OF CARE IS A

DIGITAL REVOLUTION

Inside the virtual pathways of the Network of Care, no one falls through the cracks, support is comprehensive, and whole-person care is not just a buzzword, it is a reality. Meet the visionaries behind this growing digital platform designed to connect local nonprofits through a shared system of record.

When the Helpline Center launched the Network of Care in 2018, it was with the belief that the power of many is greater than the power of one. The idea of connecting nonprofits through a shared database was intended not just to streamline processes, but to harness the collective wisdom, resources and expertise of organizations across all sectors to better serve the multi-faceted needs of those experiencing social and economic hardship.

“Because the Helpline Center operates 211, which provides information, resources and referrals, we always were left asking the same questions like, ‘Did the caller take advantage of the information we just provided?’ and ‘Did they get the help they were looking for?’ We really did not have a good way of answering those questions,” said Janet Kittams, chief executive officer of the Helpline Center. “We knew how many people called us, we knew how

many times people needed food or housing, but we didn’t really know if they received the service and, if they did receive the service, we didn’t know what happened next.”

“We care about the people who reach out to us, so we’ve always wanted to know how the Helpline Center could play a greater role, not only in connecting people to the resources they need, but in helping to create a stronger, healthier community,” she said.

Today, thanks in part to grants from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, as well as charitable gifts from donor advised funds, the Network of Care is doing just that. With 16 nonprofit partners to date, and more on the horizon, the platform is making a profound impact on the lives of individuals and families across our area.

“The Network of Care is the epitome of what we’re working toward at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation — building connections that strengthen our community and helping individuals and families thrive,” said Patrick Gale, the Foundation’s vice president for community investment. “It’s been an honor to help this innovative idea come to life.”

How it Works

Through the Network of Care, nonprofits can transcend organizational boundaries by not only

providing reactive care, but by unlocking the potential to provide proactive whole-person care that addresses some of the underlying social determinants that shape our lives, said Shauna Batcheller, program director for the Network of Care.

“Each nonprofit ultimately serves segments of the population based on the services it provides. The Furniture Mission, for example, provides furniture for those in need, but it’s not addressing food needs or housing needs or other social needs that an individual might have,” Batcheller explained. “The Network of Care makes those connections and ultimately facilitates the referral process.”

“So often, those in need are told to ‘go here for this, and go there for that, and for this place, you’ll need these documents, and for that place you’ll need these other documents.’ It’s overwhelming for people who are most likely already in a crisis situation,” she said. “With the Network of Care, nonprofits now have access to information that will tell them if a client qualifies for its services, without the client having to bear that responsibility. It streamlines the process for clients and it increases the likelihood of individuals getting the services they need.”

The referral process is a proven model that works, Batcheller said.

With support from the City of Sioux Falls, the Network of Care is poised to onboard more nonprofits in an effort to help address the growing issue of homelessness throughout the city. Photo by Emily Spartz Weerheim.

“Research has shown that when clients are forced to try to track down programs or services themselves, their connection rate is very low. But when a service provider takes the lead by gathering information and reaching out to the client directly, the connection rate increases to 75 percent. That’s huge,” Batcheller said.

The Power of Data

At its core, the Network of Care is about connecting nonprofits to provide better care for those in need. But deep inside the Network’s virtual hallways, valuable and insightful data is waiting to be mined.

That data, the Helpline Center says, is key to creating a brighter tomorrow for our community.

“We’re continuing to add critical data that will provide better insights on the needs that exist throughout our community,” said Betsy Schuster, the Helpline Center’s vice president for program development.

That includes identifying gaps in care and/or duplication of services, as well as insights into potential solutions.

“We just developed and launched a social needs assessment that social workers, community health workers, and case managers can administer to help identify related needs like housing, food, transportation, employment and education,” Schuster said.

“Most of the time, individuals who are in crisis can only see the crisis in front of them. They likely can’t see other potential crises they may have all around them. So through a social needs assessment, we can better identify other risks and needs they have. Ultimately, the Network of Care is empowering case managers to be able to better connect the dots instead of relying on a person in crisis to be the historian of where they’ve been and what they may need to be able to get back on their feet.”

Serving a Growing and Changing City

As Sioux Falls grows and changes, Kittams said the Network of Care will become more important than ever.

“Our community is growing. We have individuals who are new to our community. And the needs of individuals are more complex than ever before. Oftentimes, people have multiple needs, which means interacting with a variety of nonprofit organizations,” Kittams said.

"The Network of Care is a testament to the power of innovation, compassion, and a belief that, by working together, we can provide better care to those who need it most."
PATRICK GALE

FALLS AREA COMMUNITY

“The Network of Care allows that to happen efficiently and seamlessly. We want to be able to connect people to the services they need to get stable, and to become contributing members of our community — that’s our ultimate goal.”

Impacting Homelessness

Up next, the Network of Care will play a major role in helping to address the growing issue of homelessness in Sioux Falls.

Following the recommendation of the Homeless Task Force, the City of Sioux Falls is providing financial support to the onboarding of new agencies to the Network of Care over the next three years.

“Having better data — data that can really show us where the needs are, what areas we’re missing, and where the gaps are — will allow us to better serve our neighbors in need, and it will help us better understand our growing community,” Kittams said.

“The support from the City is huge. Many community organizations have been unable to join the Network of Care because they couldn’t afford the software and licensing. This changes that,” Kittams said. “It's been wonderful to talk with different agencies in Sioux Falls about the Network of Care and to let them know the cost barrier has been removed.”

“There are so many dots to connect when it comes to getting someone housed," Kittams said. "So having a clearer data picture in terms of what different agencies are doing to achieve that goal, and to be able to share that information with all the housing navigators and coordinators throughout the city, that will be huge.”

THE VETERANS COMMUNITY PROJECT IS BUILDING

HOMES FOR HEROES

The new Veterans Community Project in northwest Sioux Falls will feature 25 homes and a village center designed to help veterans heal, rebuild and find peace. Made possible thanks entirely to philanthropic support, these homes are more than just brick and mortar, they are symbols of honor, gratitude and unity — reminding us that every hero deserves a place to call home.

The Veterans Community Project (VCP) was founded in 2016 by combat veterans in Kansas City, Missouri, after volunteers counted more than 33,000 veterans who were experiencing homelessness across the U.S. The mission of the nonprofit is “to support every man and woman who took the oath for our country.”

In Sioux Falls, the Veterans Community Project officially began serving veterans in September.

Located on two acres in the northwest part of the city, the VCP will provide veterans with a place to call home and, once completed, its Village Center will also provide wraparound services to equip veterans with the tools

they need to return to stable, prosperous and independent lives. In the Village Center, veterans will be able to access resume-writing workshops, mental health support services, counseling, cooking classes, yoga, and more.

The homes — eight of which were built by students in the Residential Construction class at Harrisburg High School — are thoughtfully planned to accommodate residents who may be dealing with conditions such as PTSD and anxiety. For example, beds face the main doors and interior doors don’t extend to the floor or ceiling in order to provide better sound flow. Some of the homes are ADA compliant and family units can house up to six people.

Harrisburg students Zyen Hovdestad and Carson Christensen helped on the construction of the homes.

“I have a lot of respect for veterans,” Hovdestad said. “This project is great because it gives veterans a new beginning.”

Christensen agreed. “My grandfathers were both veterans, so I know the sacrifice,” he said.

For Eric Gage, executive director of the VCP in Sioux Falls, the project is all about community. “Here, veterans have a chance to rebuild their lives in a neighborhood filled with their veteran brothers and sisters,” Gage said.

Serving Every Veteran

According to research, the veteran population is at an increased risk for mental health issues, physical illness, substance abuse, and unemployment. These risk factors make veterans twice as likely to become chronically homeless.

It’s also why many veterans fall through the cracks, Gage said. “There’s a lot of federal funding available to nonprofits who serve veterans who are eligible for VA benefits, but not for nonprofits who serve the 40% of vets who are ineligible for VA benefits. Those are the vets who are being left behind,” Gage said. “We serve every veteran, regardless of their time of service and discharge status.”

A Pathway to Success

The VCP is designed to provide veterans with a pathway to success. Everything is free to veterans during their stay, from the use of the home, to food and case management services. In exchange for their stay, each veteran is graded on their use of, and success with, the VCP’s five pillars: health and wellbeing, income stability, fiscal understanding, education and training, and a network of support.

It’s all in an effort to help veterans move from homelessness to hopefulness. And it’s working.

Gage said the VCP model has an 85% success rate of successfully placing veterans in stable housing within 10-14 months (compared to a 40% success rate over two years from other transitional housing solutions).

For Gage, seeing the Sioux Falls community step forward to support the project has been especially meaningful.

“We’ve had such great support — from students and builders helping with the construction, to those who’ve donated furnishings, to those who’ve made gifts in support of the project — many from charitable funds held at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. It’s really special to see how Sioux Falls has stepped forward to support our veterans.”

The Sioux Falls Veterans Community Project will serve its first veterans this fall with the opening of the first five homes, created thanks to charitable and volunteer support, including construction help from Harrisburg High School students. Another fundraising campaign will support the construction of an additional 20 homes and the village center. Learn more at veteranscommunityproject.org/siouxfalls. Photos by Emily Spartz Weerheim.

NEIGHBORS WHO INSPIRE

Across our area, charitable giving is helping to bring good ideas to life, creating opportunities for individuals and families to thrive, and enhancing our community in meaningful ways.

Glenys and Rick Hull. Photo by Jackie Adelmann Photography.

RICK AND GLENYS HULL'S

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

The story of Rick and Glenys Hull reminds us that the choices we make, the seeds we plant, and the compassion we extend along the way can indeed change lives and strengthen communities.

For retired business owners Rick and Glenys Hull, philanthropy has always been about an attitude of gratitude.

“We’re two people who didn’t grow up with much, but we worked hard and found success along the way,” Rick said. “We’ve been very lucky, and we’ve been blessed in so many ways — we believe we have a responsibility to pay that forward.”

Today, the Hulls are doing just that through their charitable fund at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. While their giving supports a variety of areas, their philanthropy is mainly focused on hunger, homelessness and children.

Although they understand the need to support basic needs, the Hulls are looking for ways to break the cycle of poverty. To that end, they're focused on helping kids dream bigger dreams and find their way to brighter futures.

“You can’t be what you can’t see,” Glenys said. “So we want to help create opportunities for kids that will inspire their dreams.”

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

For the last 25 years, the Hulls have owned and operated Johnstone Supply locations in Sioux Falls and around the region. Shortly after announcing their retirement last spring, the couple reflected on how their humble beginnings in Upper Michigan played a role in shaping their decisions, their outlook on life, and their approach to giving back.

“Both of us grew up with very little. But at the time, we didn’t realize how little we had,” Glenys said.

Rick agreed. “As a kid, my first house had three rooms — a kitchen, living room and a bedroom for the four of us. We didn’t have insulation or indoor plumbing. We had a wood stove in the kitchen and an oil burning stove in the living room. In the winter, the bedroom was closed off and we all slept in the living room. I can remember my mom and dad going for commodities and coming back with cheese and pancake mix. I’ve had more pancakes than you can imagine,” he said, laughing. “We didn’t have much, but we were happy.”

After high school, they worked hard to get through college — sometimes working more than 50 hours a week in addition to their classes. After Rick’s graduation from college, he began a career in retail leadership. His work took the couple to various cities in several states before they eventually settled in Sioux Falls in 1986.

“When we think about the success we’ve had, from our beginnings and where we came from — we just feel so grateful,” Rick said. “It’s why so much of our giving focuses on helping kids. We believe that’s how we can really make a difference and impact meaningful change — change not only for today, but for generations to come.”

As their retirement begins, the couple is looking forward to starting a new chapter in their philanthropy.

CONTINUED FROM: PAGE 19

“We’re thinking about philanthropy a lot and we’ve had a number of conversations with the Foundation about needs throughout the community and what we can do. We’re excited about the possibilities ahead," Glenys said.

Connecting Passion to Purpose

For the Hulls, the Community Foundation has been a partner in bringing their charitable dreams to life.

“The Foundation has been a great resource for us in our giving,” Glenys said. “They’ve been willing to research charitable giving opportunities to help us learn about different causes and to understand the impact our giving can have.”

Rick agreed.

“Many of our charitable ideas would not have come to life without the Foundation. It’s been a pleasure working with the Foundation team because they not only understand the needs that exist throughout our community, they also listen and understand our passions and what we’d like to accomplish,”he said.

"You can’t be what you can’t see. So we want to help create opportunities for kids that will inspire their dreams."
GLENYS HULL , PHILANTHROPIST

Such was the case about 10 years ago when the Hulls shared their desire to give in support of experiential learning opportunities for local elementary school kids.

The Community Foundation worked with the Hulls, the Washington Pavilion, and the Sioux Falls School District to create a field trip program for fifth grade students at Title 1 schools. Thanks to gifts from the Hulls, hundreds of fifth graders have had a chance to experience a live performance inside the Pavilion’s Mary W. Sommervold Hall, to learn fine dining and communication skills, and to enjoy a full-course lunch.

Students from Lowell Elementary enjoyed a special day at the Washington Pavilion thanks to a charitable gift from Rick and Glenys Hull. After the experience, students wrote notes to express their thanks. (Submitted photos)

For the students, the field trips are a memorable and meaningful experience that opens their eyes to future opportunities.

“Thank you for this opportunity that I will never forget,” Maximiliano, a fifth grader at Lowell Elementary wrote in a thank-you card after his field trip.

Chivalry, a fellow fifth grader at Lowell, agreed, writing that the Hulls inspired her to want to give back one day.

“You brightened my day,” she wrote “I hope I can do something someday like you did for me.”

That’s the beautiful thing about giving, the Hulls said. Kindness that inspires kindness.

“When you give back, it comes back to you in so many ways. The joy of giving really is priceless,” Rick said.

"When we think about the success we’ve had, from our beginnings and where we came from — we just feel so grateful. It’s why so much of our giving focuses on helping kids. We believe that’s how we can really make a difference and impact meaningful change — change not only for today, but for generations to come."

T. DENNY SANFORD'S

HEART FOR GIVING

His philanthropic leadership and spirit of collaboration have ignited ripples of positive change, and his transformational generosity has reshaped the destiny of our community. His story reminds us that the most profound legacies are created not by what we build for ourselves, but by the lives we impact along the way.

Meet our 2023 Friend of the Foundation honoree, T. Denny Sanford.

It’s almost impossible to measure the impact of T. Denny Sanford’s philanthropy.

His generosity has transformed health care and advanced medical research, opened doors for those in need, created possibilities for students, and fostered joy through the arts. The breadth and depth of his philanthropy has touched the lives of people from all ages and has enriched our area in beautiful and meaningful ways.

For our community, he is, without question, the most impactful philanthropist of our time.

“The impact of Denny’s philanthropy on our community is simply profound,” said Andy Patterson, president of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“Through his giving, he’s been an architect of hope for Sioux Falls. Our community would not be the strong and thriving place it is today without his generosity. His giving has touched the lives of thousands in truly meaningful ways — and it will continue to do so for generations to come.”

“Denny’s legacy will be defined by his leadership, his commitment to innovation and collaboration, his passion for giving, and the wonderful ways in which he has inspired the spirit of giving in others. We couldn’t be more honored to name him our 2023 Friend of the Foundation award recipient.”

For more than 27 years, the Friend of the Foundation Award has recognized philanthropic individuals, families or businesses whose innovative and collaborative leadership and consistent generosity have impacted the Sioux Falls area and those who call it home.

The award will be presented at the Foundation's 2023 Donor Reception this fall.

T. Denny Sanford. (Submitted Photo)

We caught up with Sanford to learn more about the inspiration behind his giving, his fondest philanthropic memories, and his hopes for the future.

Q. Can you share what or who first inspired your spirit of giving?

A. Although my father had a very modest income, he was one of the most giving people I’ve ever met. He was philanthropic. Sometimes I thought he was a little too philanthropic with my allowance, but he really became my inspiration for giving.

Q. You’ve done so much for Sioux Falls. Can you share why this area is so special for you?

A. Like many in the financial services industry, I originally came to Sioux Falls because of the tremendous business climate. South Dakota’s business-friendly atmosphere and its hard-working people allowed my business to prosper and flourish. I have always been thankful for that.

I was raised in a nice city, St. Paul, but I quickly discovered that Sioux Falls was a special place. It’s a great place to work, live and play; and it’s located in a great state. The people here are wonderful. They have a work ethic like no other and their value system is like nothing I have witnessed in other parts of the nation.

Q. Is there a certain gift that means the most to you? Or a gift you’re most proud of?

A. There are two gifts that come to the top of my mind. The first is my initial gift to Sanford Health. That organization means so much to me and it benefits so many people and families in this area. Its accomplishments in medical research and family health care have inspired me to continue giving and continue making our community strong.

The second gift that makes me incredibly proud is the initial funding for my Harmony Program, an effort that provides teachers with the tools to advance social-emotional development among students in grades Pre-K through 6. The exercises and activities emphasize communication, empathy, critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving skills. The results have been tremendous. Today, 22 million children have been involved in the Harmony Program through their schools.

Q. Your gifts to Sanford Health have been truly transformational — expanding and enhancing patient services, sparking medical education and research, creating jobs and fueling our economy, and, perhaps most importantly, offering individuals and families hope and healing through world-class health care. As you reflect on how Sanford Health has grown and changed since your initial gift, how does it make you feel to see the extraordinary impact of your giving?

A. I am trying to live a life of significance by giving back to my community, and it’s a wonderful feeling knowing that I can make a difference.

Looking back, I was kid who was raised on the wrong side of town in St. Paul. Now, I have the ability to make a positive impact on my community. That’s wonderful — just wonderful.

Q. In Sioux Falls, we can see the impact of your philanthropy across so many sectors — health care, education, youth, community. How did you ultimately land on those areas of focus for your giving?

A. I look at giving in a similar manner to the way I look at business. I’m a “Return on Investment” kind of guy. When you look at an investment in health care, in young people, education and community, there are no greater areas in terms of the potential return. In my opinion, these are areas where a charitable investor can get the biggest “bang for his buck.” My hope is that these investments will continue to have a positive return for generations to come.

Q. We believe your legacy will be one of care and compassion for others — a legacy that will no doubt live on through your philanthropy. From the standpoint of philanthropy, how do you want others to remember you?

A. I hope that people remember me as a good person who helped make a difference in his community. One of my favorite sayings is, “Aspire to inspire, before you expire.” If I can inspire others to give back to their community, that would be a wonderful legacy.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOLAR ALLIE WEBER IS

INVENTING FOR GOOD

At just 18 years old, Allie Weber is already a patented inventor, an online community-builder and an award winning STEM advocate. Today, thanks to scholarships from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, she’s set to use her passion and creativity to inspire a new generation of makers and builders.

Allie Weber’s room is a labyrinth of gears and wires, Exacto knives and hot glue guns, and drawings and prototypes for everything from the Frost Stopper, a glove designed to prevent frostbite (for which Weber applied for and received a patent at the age of 14), to a light-up prom dress, to a full-size Tardis replica she built herself. (While it won’t transport you through time or space, it’s beyond cool and is, hands-down, easily the envy of any “Doctor Who” fan.)

Since the tender age of six, Weber has been using her creativity and passion for helping

others to design and build solutions for challenges she sees.

As @RobotMakerGirl, she chronicles her creative process on TikTok and via her “Tech-nic-Allie Speaking” YouTube channel. Her inventions, and her desire to inspire innovation in others, has gained her national attention — she’s been a host on the popular TV show “Mythbusters Jr,” has appeared in Teen Vogue and is a past winner of the Global Spark Lab's "InventIt Challenge." She even worked with special effects designer Adam Savage at the request of famed Hollywood director Jason Reitman

to make various props for “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the 2021 film inspired by the original “Ghostbusters” (one of Weber’s all-time favorite movies).

But Weber’s story is far more than that of just a young inventor. Hers is the story of a hopeful visionary whose spirit blazes with possibility. Above all, it’s a reminder that the power to change the world doesn’t begin with adults. It begins with kids.

“I like to say that kids are not the future, they’re here now. They’re not going to change the world someday, they already are,” Weber said. “The youth can do things, and they are doing things.”

Today, thanks in part to scholarships from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, Weber is set to begin a new chapter in her odyssey to create positive change. As a freshman at South Dakota State University, she’s pursuing a major in pharmacy with plans to continue her passion for inventing and building.

She chose pharmacy because “I wanted a job that would let me keep innovating and helping people while also being able to explore and do things I haven’t tried before,” she said. “I’ve always had an intense need for learning, so being able to try something new like the field of pharmacy, while also being able to follow my passions for inventing and helping people is really exciting.”

“Being able to have these scholarships from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has been so helpful. I won’t have to spend so much time worrying about the funding I need for school. I’ll be able to put my efforts elsewhere like volunteering and continuing community projects,” Weber said.

Over the years, thousands of young scholars have benefited from scholarships held at the Community Foundation. Established by donors who are passionate about the power of education, the scholarships provide meaningful support to students who are pursuing postsecondary education at various colleges and universities.

For Patrick Gale, the Foundation’s vice president for community investment, scholarships illustrate the powerful intersection of philanthropy and education.

“We are so grateful to the donors behind our scholarship funds for investing in students like Allie — young people from across our area who, in their educational pursuits, will be challenged to ask questions, listen, engage in dialogue, learn, serve and explore new ideas for a brighter and stronger tomorrow,” Gale said. “It’s impactful philanthropy at its finest, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

BUILDERS WHO STRENGTHEN

At its core, philanthropy is about people helping people for the greater good of all. It's why we celebrate the many change-makers and thought-leaders across our area who are rolling up their sleeves and doing what needs to be done to make a difference in the lives of others.

THE TOY LENDING LIBRARY IS ADVANCING

THE POWER OF PLAY

The Toy Lending Library believes that limited resources and financial hardships shouldn’t overshadow the transformative power of play. Thanks in part to a Community Foundation grant, this special nonprofit is providing area families access to toys designed to foster creativity and strengthen the imagination.

Anelis Coscioni was looking for a way to make a difference when she learned about an issue facing a growing number of families across Sioux Falls.

“I was touring some classrooms with the Head Start coordinator and she told me a lot of families in Sioux Falls didn’t have toys for their kids,” Coscioni said. “I believe in the power of play and the impact it has on the lives of kids, so I wanted to do something to help, Coscioni said.

In 2015, she worked with the Soroptimist Club of Sioux Falls to launch the Toy Lending Library, a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for children 0-5 to enhance their learning development through play.

“Studies have shown that children ages 0-5 who play regularly have enhanced learning development in a variety of areas including problem-solving and communication,” Coscioni said. “Play is the best way to learn — play promotes creativity, physical and emotional health, and school readiness.”

How it Works

The Toy Lending Library is headquartered inside the First United Methodist Church downtown, where neatly labeled toy boxes line the shelves. Each label features images of the toy inside, the age it's designed for, and the skills it teaches.

“We use pictures on the labels so even if you don’t know English, you’ll know what you’re getting,” Coscioni said.

Families can check out a toy box from the Toy Lending Library’s main location, or from one of 16 different sites across the area, including each of the city’s public libraries and the Bookmobile. After the boxes are returned, the Toy Lending Library’s army of volunteers steps in to clean, sort and organize the toy boxes for the next family to use.

“We have a robust cleaning and sanitation process, so families and caregivers know the toys are clean and ready to go once they open a box,” Coscioni said.

Steady Growth

The Toy Lending Library’s continued growth illuminates the changing needs of our growing community, said Patrick Gale, the Foundation’s vice president for community investment.

Since the Toy Lending Library's founding, families have checked out or renewed more than 21,000 toy boxes. More than 700 boxes were checked out in June 2023 alone — that’s

compared to a total of 250 boxes that were checked out for the entire year in 2015.

That growth is why, earlier this year, the Foundation awarded a grant to the Toy Lending Library to help ensure its long-term sustainability. The grant will help the Toy Lending Library move from being a completely volunteer-led organization to one with a paid executive director position.

Gale said the grant illustrates the Foundation’s commitment to investing in causes and ideas with the promise and potential to create positive change.

“For us, an investment in the Toy Lending Library is ultimately an investment in our kids,” Gale said. “This special organization is not only helping hundreds of kids across our area learn, develop and thrive, it’s bringing joy to families, and it’s supporting our environment by giving gently used toys a new purpose. We’re excited that this grant will help the Toy Lending Library continue to grow in innovative and sustainable ways, ensuring it remains a valued resource for families in our community.”

For the Toy Lending Library, the grant has been a game-changer. “The goal is for the organization to be self-sufficient, but that’s hard when your product is free,” Coscioni said. “The support from the Foundation will help us operate more efficiently, research new ideas, and create new processes that will enable us to serve even more kids and families. We’re so grateful for this grant.”

Led by Anelis Coscioni and supported by a team of volunteers, the Toy Lending Library aims to create opportunities for children to advance their learning development through play. Learn more at toylendinglibrarysd.org. Photos by Emily Spartz Weerheim.

ROCK RANCH IS CREATING A

HAVEN FOR HEALING

Welcome to Rock Ranch, where ropes and reins symbolize the power of trust, where the bond between humans and horses is unbreakable, and where healing begins with each hoof print. Buoyed by philanthropy and an endowment at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, this special nonprofit is creating stories of resilience and transformation for those from every generation.

Just east of Sioux Falls, down a gravel road bordered by farm fields and sunflowers, there’s a place where wounded hearts are mended, where shattered confidence is restored, and where those who are lost can begin to find their way forward thanks to the healing power of horses.

Rock Ranch was founded in 2016 by Dan and Marie LaRock with a mission to help people of all generations improve physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally while learning the art and skills of horsemanship.

It’s a mission that’s changing lives every day.

Equine Therapy: The Healing Power of Horses

As a founding certified member of Arenas for Change (ARCH) and Horses for Mental Health (HMH), and with additional certification in Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA), Marie LaRock leads the programming efforts for Rock Ranch.

With a background in speech therapy and a love for animals big and small, Marie believes that horses have the ability to sense the unspoken struggles and fears that burden us all.

It’s just one reason, she says, why equine therapy is so powerful.

“Horses are so intuitive. They’re in tune to everything that’s going on around them. They don’t miss a beat. So if you can allow yourself to be still and observe a horse, you realize they’re seeing everything — they can completely focus on everything that’s going on around them,” she said.

“Human beings are so distracted. When we allow ourselves to be still with a horse and let ourselves be open to exploring that stillness, it can be life-changing,” she said, explaining that while many people respond well to traditional talk therapy, others such as veterans, trauma survivors, children with challenges, and troubled teens can gain insight by doing and talking.”

Healing can happen in positive, meaningful ways by spending time with a horse, by learning to care for a horse, and by learning to ride.

In addition to equine therapy and programs for seniors, Rock Ranch also offers riding programs for kids of all abilities. Along with teaching horsemanship skills and building confidence, these programs help promote understanding and compassion.

“One example is how kids with autism will ride with kids who don’t have autism. The kids learn to embrace their differences. They learn acceptance. They learn to see and recognize that everyone has different gifts,” Marie said.

Collaboration and Partnership

Since its founding, Rock Ranch has grown each year. In 2022, the nonprofit provided more than 700 lessons through its RideRockRanch Program

and hosted another 400 people through its Senior Saddles, Girl Scouts and Women’s Programs. Its success is a testament to the collaboration of its owners.

“Marie’s mind created all the beautiful things that became part of Rock Ranch’s service and delivery. The reason we have a waiting list as long as our arms is because those programs are so awesome,” Dan explained. “My mind works toward the management, marketing, finance, strategic development and organizational structure.”

With a focus on continued growth and longterm planning, the couple made the decision to establish an organizational endowment at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“We believe an endowment will help with future operational costs and will help us reach a level of sustainability for the future,” Dan said.

“The Foundation not only knows and understands how our programs impact people, their expertise and experience has also been valuable as we’ve worked to advance the mission of Rock Ranch. They’re a great partner.”

The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation is proud to serve as the steward of organizational endowments for area nonprofits. With an organizational endowment, nonprofits receive administrative and professional management expertise, achieve greater investment performance and diversity, and secure protection for future use. HOW ARTIST MARY PAYTON FOUND

HEALING THROUGH ART

After a rare condition impacted her vision, Mary Payton began looking at life, and art, through a different lens. Her story of resilience and transformation illuminates the power of the human spirit and reminds us all that, for our mind’s eye, creativity knows no bounds.

For Mary Payton, the artist behind "A Better Day," featured on the cover of our 2023 Annual Report, art has been not only a way to express her creativity, it has offered hope and healing during some of life’s darkest moments.

Her passion for art first began when she was just a kid growing up in the Black Hills.

“I always felt like it was something I did. When I was in school and we had choices, I always chose art. There’s such a wealth of visual stimuli in the Black Hills — it’s so beautiful there,” she said.

But she also loved science, and even started out as a pre-med major at South Dakota State University.

“I really thought science would be my life. Then I took an art class as an elective and the next semester I changed my major. I knew it was my life. I just couldn’t let it go and I couldn’t find a way to let it be second fiddle.”

After graduating from SDSU with majors in fine art and art education, she moved to Colorado. Later, she moved back to South Dakota and settled in Sioux Falls where eventually, her artistic interests expanded to acrylics and stained glass.

“I took a class in stained glass. I fell in love with it. I learned how to morph stained glass into fused glass into sculpted glass into sculpted jewelry. Glass became really, really important to me.”

Over the next number of years, Payton’s focus on art ebbed and flowed. She continued to make her own art when she could and even gave private art lessons for a time. Between raising kids and the demands of a full-time job, she found she had less and less time for art.

Then, in 2015, she got sick and everything changed.

A Life- Ch anging Diagnosis

In the beginning, she said, it felt like a stomach flu. But it didn’t pass, and new symptoms emerged. A pre-existing autoimmune condition only complicated the situation.

“It lasted for weeks and weeks and I got sicker and sicker,” Payton said. “My eyes got more and more red. They were so painful, and my vision was changing.”

The symptoms persisted for years until Payton was eventually referred to the Mayo Clinic where she was diagnosed with Visual Snow Syndrome, a rare condition “where patients see a type of TV static in their vision. It's almost like they have millions of tiny little dots in their vision all the time, and it's throughout their visual field," said Dr. Robertson, a Mayo Clinic neurologist.

The condition can also cause additional symptoms that “involve flashes of light or seeing things that the brain is supposed to tune out, such as eye floaters or after-images,” as well as dizziness, headaches or ringing in the ears.

Learn more about our 2023 Cover Artist Mary Payton and see her art via @paytonology on Instagram.

During the darkest depths of her illness, Payton “spent about six weeks not being able to use my eyes much at all — they were either closed or behind dark glasses.”

Her mind’s eye, however, was seeing in new and extraordinary ways.

“All throughout that time, I was imagining the things I was going to paint when I could paint again. I was picturing them in my mind. And that’s how painting happened again,” she said.

Healing Through Art

Following her diagnosis, Payton said facing her new reality was difficult.

“My eyes were extremely painful and I suffered from daily migraines. But I wanted to paint, so I started to paint almost every night and eventually, I realized that it was changing me physically. It was letting my eyes relax. It was letting my brain relax. It became therapy for me — both mentally and physically. I was just letting go, exploring new media, new colors and new techniques. It changed my mindset. It made me feel better physically.”

Eventually, she began to experience feelings of gratitude for her “new vision.”

“It would have been easy to let myself fall into a dark place after my symptoms and eventual diagnosis, but that’s not what I wanted for myself. I’m just so thankful that art was an option for me — that art could help me deal with this and could help me heal.”

“Now it’s kind of like seeing through a filter. I’ve just learned to sort of work it out. In a lot of ways, I’m really grateful for the Visual Snow Syndrome because I don’t think I would be painting the way I am now without it. I know I wouldn’t. It’s really interesting to have this really unique view of the world.”

Hope After Devastation

By 2021, Payton’s life was moving forward. She’d found a way to work through her condition — and to incorporate it into her art — and her work was gaining a strong following.

“In my work, I began to focus on examining the unique way that the filter in my brain alters my vision. I became interested in trying to convey to the viewer how it feels to have so many visual disturbances,” she said. “I’d connected with some galleries and they helped me get into some shows. I was posting about my painting on Instagram. I was gaining a lot of followers there and my paintings started selling."

"Now I can see that this crazy vision that I have is really quite fantastic. It's quite beautiful and I'm thankful for it."
MARY PAYTON, ARTIST

Then, disaster struck.

“We’d had a bad storm and the water main outside of our house broke. We woke up to eight inches of water in our basement, which is where my studio is. All of my canvases were ruined. It was devastating.”

She turned to the Sioux Falls Arts Council for help. There, she applied for a Micro Grant, a program supported by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation that provides funding to local artists to help support and advance their work.

“I applied and explained what had happened. My grant application got approved and I was able to purchase new canvases. It was such a gift to be approved for that,” Payton said, calling the Arts Council a true champion for local artists.

“The Arts Council and Kellen Boice (executive director) — they’re so welcoming and inclusive. It’s all about inviting others to connect and be part of the wonderful circle of artists that exists here in Sioux Falls. It’s such a gift to the arts community here.”

Supporting Local Artists

In an effort to celebrate and support local artists in our community, each year the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation commissions an original piece of artwork to feature in our annual report. Reflecting on this year’s artwork, President Andy Patterson called Payton and "A Better Day" the perfect illustration of the Foundation’s mission and its work over the last year to build meaningful connections.

“We’re honored to feature Mary’s work on the cover of our annual report," Patterson said. "Her personal and artistic journey, and the emotions her pieces evoke, are reminders of the power of the human spirit and the ability we all have to imagine a brighter tomorrow."

Up-close with"A Better Day" by Mary Payton.

PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS

The Community Foundation’s organizational endowment options help neighborhood nonprofits establish and grow their endowment assets, creating a permanent source of financial support.

With nearly 40 years of leadership and experience, we know and understand that strong and healthy nonprofits are key to a thriving community. 10 YEAR - ASSET GROWTH

300,000,000

Using a model created by the South Dakota Investment Council, the Foundation’s Investment Management Committee helps guide the asset allocation within the Long Term Portfolio.

FISCAL YEAR IN REVIEW

Fiscal year 2023 began with a rocky start in both the domestic and international markets. The S&P 500 posted a negative return for the quarter ending on September 30, 2022. The quarters that followed showed less volatility and improved returns. The 12 month period ending June 30, 2023, posted a return of over 19% for the index. International markets, namely developed markets, performed much in the same fashion. Emerging markets posted a positive return for the fiscal year, but lagged domestic markets significantly.

The Foundation’s Long-Term Portfolio did not adjust its tactical target at any point during the fiscal year. With an equity allocation of 65%, the portfolio lagged its benchmarks with higher equity allocations. The portfolio continued to favor international investments over domestic, with a heavier weighting to developed markets rather than emerging. With the interest rate environment, the portfolio was able to capitalize on its 14% cash position.

Looking ahead, the Investment Management Committee will continue to inform decisions based on the model, employ a disciplined management strategy, and focus on long-term results. As markets allow, the committee with look for strategic opportunities while monitoring inflation, interest and various economic indicators.
