A M E SSA G E F R O M T HE P R E S IDE N T I have a confession this holiday season — I don’t really like ugly Christmas sweater parties.

I’m not really even sure why. Maybe it’s because my go-to sweater isn’t all that ugly or because I always find myself conflicted between wanting to win the ugly sweater contest, but definitely not wanting to wear the ridiculous outfit required to claim the prize. But in this strange year, I am even missing the ugly Christmas sweater party.

It’s been tough to take a pause from many of the traditions we have come to know, and this holiday season seems to bring an ever-increasing flow of canceled events. In the big picture, this really isn’t that big of a deal — especially in light of our friends and neighbors who’ve experienced real pain and loss during this pandemic. But it is another one of those things that we miss.

I find myself especially missing the Community Foundation’s annual Legacy Celebration, an event we typically hold in early December to recognize and thank those who have included the Community Foundation in their estate plans. With the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases, we made the hard decision to forego the event this year.

This special event was always a highlight of my year — a time to catch up with dear friends, visit about upcoming holiday plans and to talk about our shared vision for a better, brighter tomorrow for the community we all love.

One of my favorite parts of the Legacy Celebration is the opportunity to share stories of donors who, before passing on, made the decision to entrust the Foundation with their charitable giving intentions. Through their planned giving, these extraordinary donors left lasting legacies

of care — legacies that celebrate and provide ongoing support for the places and organizations they loved.

These thoughtful gifts are a chance for us to learn about the people, places and causes that have helped to shape and influence our donors throughout their lives. It’s a chance for us to learn about their passions, their values and their hopes and dreams for the future. It’s such an honor to be part of that process.

This fall, we’ve had the opportunity to visit with individuals and families who have reached out to update their estate plans. It’s been so heartwarming to talk with these donors about the nonprofit organizations who have impacted their lives. And it’s been amazing to think about and talk through how future gifts could impact these organizations — providing support to help them work toward their missions of helping those in need throughout our community.

It’s hard to put into words how meaningful it is to be part of this process — to witness the passion, care and unending generosity of people and to walk with them on their philanthropic journey.

It’s always a deeply special experience for us, but I think seeing these expressions of the best of humanity — giving of one’s self for the greater good — during a time like this, well, it just makes it even more amazing.

On behalf of the Community Foundation, I want you to know that when you’re ready to begin drafting your planned giving ideas, we’ll be here to walk that journey with you. We’ll be here to ensure that your legacy of care lives on — for good, for ever.

Honoring the Past, Planning for the Future As parents, Louis and Dorothy Hurwitz passed on countless values — a commitment to their faith, compassion for others, and a strong belief in philanthropy. Guided by those values, their children are working with the Foundation to fulfill their parents’ charitable vision, ensuring this special couple’s legacy of care lives on.

Tradition was important to Louis and Dorothy Hurwitz.

Married for more than 70 years, the couple was proud of their Jewish faith and worked hard to uphold the customs they’d grown to love and revere over their lifetimes.

Tradition, faith, their core values and a deep love for the community they called home all inspired the couple’s broad philanthropic pursuits as well, their daughter, Susan, said.

While Louis and Dorothy passed away more than a decade ago, their legacy of care lives on thanks to their children, who learned the importance of philanthropy from their parents and who, in partnership with the Community Foundation, have created strategies designed to fulfill their parents’ charitable vision of supporting the community they loved so much.

Supporting the Community That Supported Them Born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, Louis and Dorothy came to Sioux Falls in the 1930s to begin building their life together.

Here, they found a welcoming community that not only helped the young couple settle in, it also opened doors for professional and volunteer opportunities as well.

“One thing about the Jewish community, it embraced and looked after people when they were new to the area,” their oldest daughter, Nancy, said. “Soon after arriving in Sioux Falls, my father was introduced to Holton Davenport and that’s where his career began.”

Louis Hurwitz would go on to spend the next four decades working with Davenport, as well as fellow lawyers Ellsworth Evans and Deming Smith, practicing business and family law while helping to build the firm that is today known as Davenport Evans.

By his side always was Dorothy, offering steadfast support to her husband, caring for their children — daughters, Nancy and Susan, and son, Charles, and volunteering for various efforts throughout the community.

“Dad was outgoing and mom was quiet, efficient, calm,” Susan remembered. “She could get so many things done, but she was very content to be behind the scenes. They complemented each other so well.”

Beyond their work and family, Louis and Dorothy were intentional about serving and supporting their community. Volunteering for different nonprofits not only allowed Louis and Dorothy to help their neighbors in need, their daughters said, it also informed their philanthropic endeavors.

“Philanthropy came so naturally for both of them,” Susan said. “Because, they were both so grateful. They never lost track of where they came from and what they were able to build with the help of the community — with the help of so many people here. They just never forgot how much people did for them. They wanted to do the same.”

The couple’s growing desire to give back ultimately led them to work with the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“When the Foundation started, they saw a real opportunity to be philanthropic going forward,” Susan said. “It was one thing to give money and land, but through the Foundation, they saw that they could support organizations and causes they cared about in perpetuity.”

A Plan to Care for a Special Place Susan described her parents as two people who always had a great deal of foresight.

“They were always looking ahead; always looking longterm to try to take care of things,” she said.

That was evident, she said, in their desire to take care of the Mount Zion Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

Established in 1903 by the Jewish Reform Congregation, Mount Zion Cemetery is located on east 12th Street, not far from Cliff Avenue. Situated within a residential neighborhood, the cemetery’s 2.5 acres is surrounded by an ornate, wrought iron fence. A classic arch bearing its name in white letters stretches above its entrance gate. Since its founding more than 100 years ago, the cemetery has continued to follow traditional Jewish burial customs.

“Our parents knew that the Jewish community would always want a place to be buried that was a Jewish cemetery,” Susan said. “That’s the culture. That’s the tradition.”

A Philanthropic Vision and a Legacy of Care In the early 1990s, Louis and Dorothy worked with the Foundation to establish a donor advised fund, distributions from which were used to support Mount Zion Cemetery.

They chose a donor advised fund for a number of reasons.

Known for their flexibility and convenience, donor advised funds are essentially accounts held at the Foundation designed to help individuals and families support their favorite charities. Fund advisors can choose when they want to recommend distributions from the fund to nonprofits and causes they’re passionate about.

In Louis and Dorothy’s case, the couple eventually added their children as successor advisors to the fund, meaning that after their lives, their children could continue to recommend distributions from the fund — ensuring that support for the cemetery would continue on.

Nancy, Susan and Charles continue to advise this fund today. Doing so, they said, prompted their interest in additional philanthropic options.

Guided by their parents’ wishes to solidify a longterm financial future for Mount Zion, Nancy, Susan and Charles worked with the Community Foundation to establish the Mount Zion Cemetery Endowment.

The siblings then worked to raise money for the endowment, soliciting donations from family members and others who cared about the Cemetery.

charity each year. This ensures endowment funds are ‘forever funds,’” said Mary Kolsrud, vice president for philanthropy. “Endowments offer the comfort of knowing that even after you’re gone, the Foundation will ensure that your charitable wishes are carried out.”

Later, the Hurwitz siblings initiated a process to transfer another trust benefitting the Cemetery to the Community Foundation, creating more flexibility in managing distributions.

“The Foundation has always been open to new ideas. If we ever have questions, we always get a call back right away. They’ve always made time for us.”

The story of the Hurwitz family illustrates the profound ways generational philanthropy can impact a community, said Andy Patterson, president of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“It’s been such a joy to work with this family to help fulfill Louis and Dorothy’s philanthropic vision,” Patterson said. “Children learn by example, and in working with Nancy, Susan and Charles, it’s easy to see that Louis and Dorothy modeled compassion, generosity and a true love for their community. Their children now live their lives guided by those same values. And today, they are continuing their parents’ legacy of care for the benefit of our community — for good, for ever.”

Susan said she believes her parents would be happy to see how their long-term charitable plans have moved into motion.

“I think they would be really appreciative of what has happened with the Foundation — how it’s grown and what it’s been able to do. I think that would please them greatly,” she said. “I think they’d be happy to know those early plans they made are taking care of this special place they cared so deeply about.”

Full Circle Thanks to a civics teacher who encouraged him, Carl Grupp went on to become an internationally known artist and a revered teacher. Now, a fund established to honor his legacy will help inspire creativity in others while encouraging today’s young artists to pursue their passions.

Carl Grupp was a renowned artist, iconic teacher, passionate scholar and prolific storyteller.

But before he was all of those things, he was just a kid from Sioux Falls with red hair and thick glasses who was trying to find his way.

While he loved to draw — he even worked as the cartoonist for the “Orange & Black,” the Washington High School student newspaper — Grupp was, admittedly, more of a curious dreamer than serious student.

He was a fan of classic stories like “Dick Tracy” and 8 | FOR GOOD. FOR EVER.

“The Lone Ranger,” but by the time his senior year came around, he still didn’t have a good sense of where his own story was headed, or what his next chapter would be.

That all changed when his high school civics teacher took the time to encourage him to pursue a college education.

“I didn’t think I was college material but, because of him, I changed my mind and tried to go to school,” Grupp said in a 2013 interview. “I thought it was amazing that he would tell me that. I wasn’t a great student in high school. I’d be lucky if I got a C in civics class. You just never know where the encouragement you need is going to come from.”

For Grupp, that encouragement made all the difference.

Knowing that someone believed in him provided the spark he needed to enroll at Augustana University.

There, he studied under art legends Palmer Eide and Ogden Dalrymple, both of whom inspired Grupp to discover and pursue his own passions for art.

After Augustana, Grupp studied at the School of Associated Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design where he earned the prestigious Ethel Morrison VanDerlip Fellowship. After traveling and studying art abroad, he went on to earn his MFA from Indiana University. In 1969, he returned to his roots and took a job teaching art at Augustana.

He would go on to spend nearly four decades at Augie, teaching, guiding and shaping the careers of generations of artists while continuing to produce his own artwork, participating in more than 100 regional, national and international art exhibitions.

While Grupp passed away in 2019 at the age of 79, the story of his extraordinary life is about to come full circle thanks to a new fund established by his children as a way to honor his legacy.

The Carl A. Grupp Charitable Fund, held at the Community Foundation, is designed to “create opportunities for kids to find inspiration, just like he did,” said Carl’s daughter, Saskia (Grupp) Ekstrom.

“Dad’s foundation was built around a teacher who pushed him to think differently; who challenged him to use his abilities to the fullest. That changed his whole life. That moment in time changed everything. We wanted to do something to create opportunities for today’s young artists to receive the same kind of encouragement he did.”

“That’s what’s driving us in creating this fund,” said Carl’s son, Carl Grupp Jr. “Our Dad’s whole life was dedicated to creating — to pouring out what was going on in his life into his artwork and to teaching and inspiring his students. We want to honor his legacy by

supporting initiatives that will inspire and create the next generation of dreamers, artists and art teachers, as well as movements that use art as a way to build and strengthen the community.”

Distributions from the fund will support various initiatives and movements throughout Sioux Falls that will inspire and celebrate art and the imagination of art, as well as efforts that support the teaching of art.

Distributions will be reviewed and awarded by Carl’s children, Saskia and Carl Grupp Jr. Flexibility and the Potential for Impact Carl Jr. and Saskia said their decision to honor their dad’s legacy with a fund at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation came about because of two reasons: flexibility and impact.

“Dad didn’t leave us answers or instructions for what to do with the enormous physical collection of art he left behind,” Carl Jr. said. “I think he knew we would figure it out. I think he just wanted us to be patient until the pieces clicked into place. We feel like we’ve found a good partnership working with the Foundation.”

“The team at the Foundation knows this community and the needs and opportunities that exist here. We know the Foundation will make us aware of opportunities this fund could support that we wouldn’t be aware of otherwise,” he said.

In order to have the greatest impact far into the future, Carl Jr. and Saskia are hoping to grow the fund to support future dreams, such as an after-school art program for students at the Washington Pavilion — a program led by visiting artists; as well as future art exhibits, programs to help families engage in the arts, and more.

“We can only imagine what the possibilities will be, and we can only imagine how excited dad would feel about all of this,” Carl Jr. said.

Community Foundation President Andy Patterson called the fund a catalyst for possibility.

“We’re so grateful to Carl Jr. and Saskia for choosing to work with the Community Foundation,” he said. “And we are excited to see the ways in which distributions from this fund will impact young aspiring artists, art teachers and our community in ways that embody Carl Grupp’s passion for creativity, his devotion to learning, and his love for the Sioux Falls community.”

Foundation Awards More Than $16,000 in Grants to Area Teachers During a school year where teachers and students are facing unparalleled challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has stepped forward to help, awarding more than $16,000 in grants to local teachers.

The grants were provided through the Foundation’s Excellence in Education Initiative, an effort that offers grants to teachers who have innovative ideas for classroom projects.

Patrick Gale, vice president for Community Investment, said the Foundation adapted the program this year in response to the pandemic.

“We knew the Excellence in Education program was going to be different this year. Everything has been different this year. But for teachers, what we’re asking them to do is bold — to care for our children, keep them safe, and teach them skills for the future — all while facing an unpredictable, invisible virus every day they walk into the classroom. So, this year is different.

This year we decided all of our teachers are winners.

Every teacher who applied for funding through the Excellence in Education Initiative received a grant.

From cardio drumming equipment and outdoor classroom furniture to microscopes, iPads, and more, innovation is alive and well in the classroom,” he said.

First Bank & Trust Donates $150k to Help Bridge the Gap This fall, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation announced a $150,000 gift from First Bank & Trust in support of the Bridging the Gap Fund, a fund established earlier this year to help inspire, build and develop emerging leaders among the city’s diverse populations.

Andy Patterson, president of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, called the gift an investment in the future of Sioux Falls.

“This game-changing gift from First Bank & Trust effectively creates a launch pad for innovative programs, resources, training and storytelling — all of which will help inspire, develop and empower a new generation of diverse leaders. We are beyond grateful to First Bank & Trust for this gift,” Patterson said.

He said the gift is a reflection of First Bank & Trust’s commitment to strengthen and enhance the communities it serves.

Following in Her Father’s Footsteps Inspired by her father’s care for others, Martha Baker has lived a life defined by servant leadership.

Now, with a recent gift to the Community Fund, she’s ensuring her father’s legacy of care will live on — for good, for ever.

Growing up in northern Minnesota, Martha Baker always looked up to her father, Horace (Hod) Ludlow, for the many ways he tried to help others. From sharing his carpentry skills, to his interest in scouting, to his various hobbies, “he was always interested in doing things for other people,” Baker said.

For Hod Ludlow, helping others was not only the right thing to do, it was also a way to set a good example for his three children — an example of how to live a life of service, care, gratitude and generosity.

Now, thanks to his example and the values he instilled in his daughter, Hod Ludlow’s legacy of caring for others is set to live on in a new way.

Two Generations and a Legacy of Care More than sixty years ago, Ludlow purchased life insurance policies for each of his children. And for all those years, Baker had held on to her policies.

But earlier this year, as the coronavirus pandemic continued to impact families throughout the Sioux Falls area, Baker made the decision to put the policies to good use — donating them to the Community Fund, the Foundation’s most visionary endowment.

“During a time when so many people in our community are suffering, I thought this gift would be a good thing to do. I think my dad would be happy about this, and I know the Foundation will find a good use for these dollars,” Baker said.

“Throughout her life, Martha has worked tirelessly to serve others, including her civic volunteerism and past service as a valued member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, as well as our Grants Committee,” he said.

“This gift is another example of her commitment to help create a brighter tomorrow for individuals, families and children throughout our community. Martha’s willingness to give of herself for the good of others simply never ends and we couldn’t be more grateful for her dedication and generosity.”

The Community Fund is designed to help support community-based nonprofits who are working to address emerging, changing and pressing needs throughout the area. Donors who give to the Community Fund entrust the Foundation to award grants from the fund where the needs are greatest.

Enrichment Services (now the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire) and eventually served as president of the organization’s board of directors.

“My heart has always been in serving children and enriching the lives of children, especially those in need,” Baker said. “My philosophy has always been driven by what I learned in college about early education and how important it is.”

Baker said she first became involved with the Community Foundation when the organization was still fairly young. Wanting to help those in need, and believing in the Foundation’s mission to build a brighter tomorrow through philanthropy, she signed on to help in any way she could. Over the years, Baker served on the Foundation’s Board of Directors as well as its Grants Committee.

“During these uncertain times, the needs throughout our community are unprecedented and our front-line nonprofits need our support more than ever,” Patterson said. “This special gift will help us as we work to support our local charities who continue to go above and beyond for those in need.”

“Serving on the Grants Committee, especially, I learned so much about our community and I loved being able to help enrich the lives of children and families. The Foundation helps so many families and organizations in our community,” she said.

A Lifetime of Service

During her service to the Foundation, Baker also watched the organization grow in significant ways.

Looking back on her own story, Baker said caring for others, especially children, has been a central theme to each chapter of her life.

That growth, she said, has led to increased community impact.

After majoring in early childhood education in college, she taught for a short time before getting married and moving to Sioux Falls. While raising her own children, she felt called to help other children in need throughout the community. She began volunteering for Youth

Potential Tax Changes and the Impact to Charitable Giving

Foundation Marks New Milestone: $200 Million in Cumulative Grantmaking The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has reached a major milestone: a record $200 million in grants to area nonprofits and causes since its founding.

“This grantmaking milestone not only celebrates the spirit of care and remarkable generosity that exists within our community, it also symbolizes the extraordinary level of trust our donors place in us to amplify the impact of their charitable giving,” said Andy Patterson, Community Foundation president. “We are thrilled to announce this landmark figure and we are excited to continue our work to spark strategic investments in creative solutions for a better tomorrow.”

As one of the state’s largest grantmakers, the majority of the Foundation’s grantmaking comes from the hundreds of charitable funds it holds for individuals, families and businesses.

Susie Patrick, chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, thanked donors for their support of the community, noting that during a time where the challenges before us are formidable, and where it seems the only certainty is uncertainty, the need for local philanthropy has never been more important.

“In partnership with our donors, the Foundation has helped enhance our area’s quality of life by supporting community-based nonprofits working to address critical challenges in education, healthcare, human services, arts and culture, community development, youth and recreation and more,” Patrick said. “While we celebrate this milestone, we know there is still more work to do. So we are focused on planning for future investments and are looking ahead to new and innovative ways through which we can harness the power and purpose of philanthropy to create a brighter community where everyone can thrive.”

The November 3 election has left many philanthropists wondering if they should implement planning techniques in anticipation of sweeping tax law changes, or instead stay the course with their current plans. Here’s brief look at how three proposed changes could affect charitable giving strategies: Under Joe Biden’s proposed tax plan, taxpayers making more than $400,000 per year would be taxed at a top income tax rate of 39.6%, an increase from 37% under current law. That would mean charitable giving would become more tax efficient under the new law for some taxpayers.

However, a separate provision in Biden’s proposed plan imposes a 28% limit on charitable deductions for taxpayers who make more than $400,000 per year. This means instead of avoiding income tax on charitable gifts at the rate of 39.6% as described above, these taxpayers would escape income tax only at a rate of 28%.

Biden’s tax proposal also calls for increasing — from a maximum rate of 20% to 39.6% — the capital gains and dividend tax rates for taxpayers whose annual earnings exceed $1 million. For affected taxpayers, this change would create opportunities to avoid significantly more tax than is possible under current law for gifts of appreciated assets. An increase like this would create a huge incentive for philanthropists to support charitable organizations.

Scholarship Opportunities We believe in the power of education. So we harness the power of philanthropy to help build the thought-leaders and change-makers of tomorrow. Today, in partnership with donors, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation holds more than $11 million in scholarship funds.

We’re here to help students achieve their educational goals.

We offer more than 150 competitive scholarships each year.

Last year, we awarded more than $400,000 to local students attending four-year colleges and universities, as well as those pursuing technical education.

Our online scholarship application is now open. Most applications are due by March 15, 2021.
