In our neighborhood, soccer balls were mostly used as improvised basketballs when all the kids showed up to play in the driveway. So, it was with more than a little anxiety that I said 'yes' when my then five-year-old daughter’s soccer team needed a coach.

So the Riverside Soccer League aimed to make it easy for kids and families to participate. Staffed by volunteers and completely free for students, it ran for 10 Saturdays last fall at a city park in the heart of the neighborhood. Kids loved it and teachers saw the impact during each school day. But more than that, the effort did something else — it brought families in the neighborhood together. It created connections, strengthened bonds and helped build community.

Several years and hundreds of snacks and juice boxes later, coaching her team has become one of my real joys. While I hope the girls have learned a little about soccer, it isn’t goals or wins that have made this a rewarding experience. The real wins are connecting with other parents who, like us, navigate the Tomar Park traffic to get to the game, the moments when the girls are distracted from the game by the new friends they've made on the team, or the great play made by the girl who was too timid to get out of her parents’ car early in the season. These are the moments that have made our family’s experience with soccer memorable.

This spring, Sioux Falls Neighborhood Soccer launched as an effort to add three additional soccer leagues at city parks, with the hope to someday expand to all Title 1 school neighborhoods. It’s being accomplished by a great collaboration of groups – the Promising Futures Fund, the Sioux Falls School District, Feeding South Dakota, Sioux Falls Thrive, Boys & Girls Club of the Sioux Empire, business sponsors, the City of Sioux Falls, area churches, Dakota Alliance Soccer, Sioux Falls Soccer Academy, and others are all working together to help more kids and families in our community experience the joy of playing a sport, of belonging to a team and of building meaningful connections amid a city that gets bigger and bigger every day.

But for many in our community, these opportunities don’t come as easily.

In our last newsletter, we featured a story on the Riverside Soccer League, an effort by volunteers to provide kids at Laura B. Anderson Elementary the chance to learn and play organized soccer.

For my family, the biggest challenge of soccer season is juggling schedules to make sure everyone can get to where they need to be on time. But the families in the Riverside neighborhood are juggling far more than just schedules. Many of these families are working hard just to make ends meet, which often means there isn't time or money to make extracurricular activities possible.

Seeing kids and families experience joy is contagious — which is why the momentum is only growing.

We are honored to have played a small role in this story — a story that, I think, is a great illustration of what can happen when people step forward and say “What if?”

At the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, WE BELIEVE PHILANTHROPY is about far more than just gifts or assets.

Philanthropy is about people helping people — it's a willingness to step forward to help, for the greater good of all.

We're honored to introduce you to one local couple who's doing just that.

STEPPING FORWARD As volunteers, community advocates, and donors, Sam and Elizabeth Gotham are living out philanthropy in its truest form.

When Sam and Elizabeth Gotham got married and made the decision to plant their roots in Sioux Falls, they knew giving back would be central to their lives together.

A Sioux Falls native, Elizabeth grew up with parents who not only taught, but also modeled the importance of volunteerism, civic engagement and charitable giving.

“Growing up, I saw the need to give back, and I also saw the benefits,” she said.

Originally from the Twin Cities, Sam had a similar upbringing.

“To improve our community, we need people to step forward in all kinds of ways — we need people who can step forward financially, we need people who can volunteer and we need people who can build connections.”

“Each Christmas we had a tradition where we would celebrate together as a family, go to church, then go downtown to serve at one of the shelters. I just remember how thankful everyone there was. That was really meaningful to me,” he said.

Guided by the values instilled by their parents, today Sam and Elizabeth are intentional about practicing philanthropy in its truest form: by helping others.

“We both love this city and we want to continue to put down roots here. We want to help make Sioux Falls an even better place for generations to come. And we want to inspire others to do so as well,” Elizabeth said. “I think it’s so important to give of our time, our energy, our money, our ideas — whatever we can — so we can continue to improve our city and make it a place individuals and families want to live in, and also contribute to.”

Sam agreed. “I think it’s easy to drive around your community and spot all the challenges. It’s easy to see the problems and what isn’t working. But, I think we need to challenge ourselves to ask, ‘what can we do about it?’” he said.

And that’s exactly what this couple is doing.

Community Volunteer, Philanthropist

As parents to two young daughters, Sam and Elizabeth are especially passionate about helping kids and families thrive.

Hearts for Service

“Having a family changes your perspective so much. You can’t help but think about what it would be like if you had to worry about how to feed your family, or how to provide for their basic needs,” Sam said.

That perspective is what inspired Sam to begin volunteering for the Furniture Mission, a Sioux Falls nonprofit that provides individuals and families in need with gently used furniture and household items.

“During one of my early experiences with the Furniture Mission, we were delivering furniture to a single mother with several kids. Once we got inside, I could see pillows and blankets on the floor. The entire family had been sleeping on the floor,” he said. “I quickly realized what a big need this organization fills in our community."

Families “need beds to sleep in and a table to eat at. Parents need spaces where they can spend time with their kids," said Sam Gotham, a volunteer for the Furniture Mission, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing gently used furniture to those in need.

Sam said the Furniture Mission helps people who are taking the first step toward rebuilding their lives — whether they’re starting over, or because they had to leave a bad situation.

And their ability to make their house or apartment a home, he said, is key to starting over successfully.

“Once someone finds a place to live — which, for many, can be a challenge in and of itself — their family needs beds to sleep in and a table to eat at. Parents need spaces where they can spend time with their kids — talking with them, eating with them, reading to them. It sounds so basic, but, if you’re sleeping on the floor and don’t have a table and chairs, where do you do all of that?” he said.

“As a community, I think we need to try to help those individuals and families who’ve taken the first step toward improving their situation by finding a new place to live.

Even something like a table and chairs — where people can sit together over a meal and talk about their day — that furniture can bring people together. It can make a family stronger. It can help them move forward.”

Today, in addition to working as a volunteer for the Furniture Mission, Sam also serves on its board of directors. He says he’s looking forward to the organization’s future move to the Empower Campus.

“Those who are served by the Furniture Mission are likely served by other nonprofits as well. That’s why the Empower Campus is so exciting — it’s truly a ‘one-stop-shop’ to provide people with the help they need at one primary location,” he said.

Hearts for Giving As Sam and Elizabeth thought about how they could best support needs throughout the community financially, the couple turned to the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation for help in achieving their charitable giving goals.

They established a donor advised fund, a popular charitable giving vehicle that provides a flexible way for donors to organize their charitable giving.

“Through their volunteer work, their advocacy for those in need, and their financial support, Sam and Elizabeth define the truest meaning of philanthropy — and that’s people helping people.”

“It’s an honor to help this special couple achieve their charitable giving goals and it’s inspiring to see their love for this community shine through in so many ways,” said Mary Kolsrud, vice president for philanthropy.

Raising Awareness Through their volunteer efforts, and through their charitable giving, the couple is hoping to raise awareness for not only the issues that exist throughout our community, but for potential solutions as well.

Solutions, they say, that become possible when we all work together for the greater good.

“The more we know, the more we can do to address the complex challenges we’re facing today,” Elizabeth said.

“Working together and giving of our time, our ideas, and our resources, we can create positive change, we can pursue possibilities and we can eliminate the stigmas that surround some of our community’s most complicated, most pressing issues — issues like addiction, domestic violence, sexual abuse, homelessness and suicide. These are issues that people in our community need help with and I think it’s up to all of us to step forward to try to help.”

Exploration and discovery happen every day at the Butterfly House & Aquarium and the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum.

EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL With support from the Foundation, the Great Plains Zoo and the Butterfly House & Aquarium are exploring a formal partnership that could impact our community for generations to come.

A recent study funded by the Community Foundation to explore the feasibility and economic impact of a formal partnership between the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History and the Butterfly House & Aquarium is officially complete, and the results are encouraging.

“The operational analysis — looking at whether it’s feasible in a community of our size to support such an operation — as well as the economic impact analysis were both positive, which is good to see,” said Zoo CEO Becky Dewitz.

Now, an exploration committee and leaders from both organizations will review the data to determine what happens next.

“It’s all critical information for us as we continue the exploration of this potential formal relationship. It’s really putting the science behind it. We want to make sure it’s in the best interest of both organizations, as well as the community, and that it’s fiscally solvent,” Dewitz said.

Similar Missions, Similar Focus Given the similarities of the two organizations, a partnership could make good sense, Dewitz said.

“The Butterfly House & Aquarium and the Zoo have been partnering since 2020 on programmatic type functions. We support each other through outreach and marketing around education and wildlife understanding. And we conduct conservation field work together as well,” she said. “Having worked together and having similar missions, we asked ourselves: ‘Can we be better together? Can we do more for our community? Can we enhance our community by working together more formally?’”

“We’re both destinations for families to make memorable moments, and to help grow their understanding of wildlife. And from there, we try to grow their respect and appreciation for the natural world – and therefore, conservation of the natural world. And, if we can do that better together, and really make those lasting memorable moments – that will help improve the quality of life for so many,” she said.

Audrey Otto, chief executive officer for the Butterfly House & Aquarium, agreed.

“The synergy between our two organizations that brought us together, through projects like the conservation of the Dakota Skipper, is becoming even more apparent as we collaborate in new ways. The possibilities are endless when we think about broadening the reach of our common mission of environmental education and conservation in our rapidly growing community,” Otto said.

Dewitz said support from the Community Foundation has been key to helping the partnership idea move forward.

“The Zoo and the Butterfly House & Aquarium are both nonprofits that operate within the black, however, there’s not a lot of margin in either of our operations for unforeseen expenses. So the Foundation’s grant in support of the exploratory study was extremely helpful,” she said.

“Especially because the results of the study will carry so much weight with regard to how we move forward.”

The study was conducted by Zoo Advisors, a planning and consulting firm that helps zoos, aquariums, and conservation organizations advance their missions, increase impact and grow sustainably.

“The operational analysis and economic impact analysis are essential components of our due diligence,” Otto said.

“Thanks to the Foundation’s grant, we were able to hire an industry-specific firm to help us understand the feasibility and sustainability of the potential partnership, providing valuable information for our boards to consider in the exploration process.”

“I think overall, the Foundation’s support for new ideas and opportunities, and its support of other nonprofits, as well as community members — that’s part of what makes Sioux Falls so great. It’s what keeps us vibrant. It’s truly a catalyst for great things in our community,” Dewitz said.

“The Foundation and our donors have a long history of supporting the great work of both the Butterfly House & Aquarium and the Great Plains Zoo — two organizations who do so much to enrich and enhance the vitality of our community,” Patterson said. “So when we heard the idea for a possible partnership, we knew we wanted to help bring the idea to light by supporting this study. We’re excited to see how joining together might allow these two nonprofits to make an even greater impact.”

“We’re still early in the process, but the results of the study were definitely encouraging.

Now, additional conversations and further exploration can happen with regard to a potential partnership down the road.”

INVESTING IN LOCAL ARTWORKS Thanks to support from the Foundation, a new Micro Grants Program is helping to activate artists and spark creativity.

Twice a year, artist Joan Zych spends time at Joe Foss School leading a weeklong program called Vision and Voice, an effort designed to help students express themselves through painting and poetry.

Zych, who serves as the admission manager and volunteer coordinator for Tallgrass Recovery & Sober Living Homes, says the program is important.

“As a teen, your life is encompassed with so much ‘stuff.’ And the kids at Joe Foss — they have heavy stuff going on in their lives,” Zych said. “Through art and poetry, they have a chance to express that — to get some of that stuff out. And hopefully, in doing so, they feel a little lighter.”

This spring, Zych was able to extend the program beyond school walls thanks to a grant from the Sioux Falls Arts Council’s new Micro Grant Program, an initiative

that provides funding to local artists to help support and advance their work.

Zych used her Micro Grant to purchase art supplies that students in the Vision and Voice program could take and keep at home.

“Most of these kids don’t have money for art supplies,” Zych said. “Thanks to this grant, I can give them some supplies — paints, brushes, a canvas — so they can continue making art at home; so they can continue to channel their emotions through creativity.”

Art can be a catalyst for positive change.

So, the more people dreaming about art, thinking about art, and making art in our community, the better our community will be, said Kellen Boice, executive director of the Sioux Falls Arts Council.

Which is why, she said, the Micro Grant Program is the right idea, at the right time.

“Micro Grants are designed to fund creativity — to give aspiring and growing artists in our community hope for the future, support to experiment with their craft, and encouragement to pursue new ideas,” Boice said.

Inspired by the Artist Emergency Fund established by Arts South Dakota during the pandemic, Boice said the Micro Grant Program “is a chance for us to shine a spotlight on artists many of us might not know — it’s a chance for our community to see and meet different artists.”

“At the Foundation, we’ve long believed art has the power to connect and unite us — and in doing so, it strengthens our community and inspires us to pursue bold ideas for a brighter tomorrow,” said Patrick Gale, vice president for Community Investment. “So if there’s a way we can support local artists and activate an arts movement across our area, we want to help.”

“The Sioux Falls Arts Council does an outstanding job at advocating for and advancing the arts for the benefit of our entire region and the Micro Grants are a great example of that,” Gale said. “It’s been an honor to partner with the Arts Council on this important program and we’re excited to see its impact across our area.”

Boice called the Foundation’s support a game changer.

“It’s so big for us,” she said. “Having the Foundation recognize this need in our community allowed us to take this from dream to reality,” Boice said. “It’s so encouraging to see the Foundation believe in the idea and step forward to help.”

Strong Interest Among Local Artists The Arts Council introduced the Micro Grant Program in January and has worked with various local organizations to promote the program, including Lutheran Social Services and the Multicultural Center.

The application form is intentionally brief and has been translated into five languages.

“We asked ourselves: if we make the application process simple, can we break down barriers that might exist for some artists who aren’t originally from this area?

Can we make it more equitable? The reality is, you don’t need to be a grant writer to apply for a Micro Grant,” Boice said. “You just need a powerful concept or idea.”

And based on early interest in the program, the city is far from short on great ideas.

“We received 89 applications for our first round of grants. That’s a lot. The first application came in within 20 minutes of the announcement going out,” Boice said.

Artists can apply for grants of $250 or $500 and can use the funding in a variety of ways, Boice said. When applying, the only requirement is that the artist reviews, or adds their profile to the Arts Council’s online artist directory.

A non-partial jury made up of individuals within the local arts community judges the applications and selects the grantees. The jury will award three more rounds of grants this year — in May, August and November.

“We’ve loved learning each artist’s story.

And we’ve especially loved to see ideas from artists who are thinking beyond themselves," Boice said. "According to the judges, applications that rose to the top among the first round of grants were those that cast the largest net — ideas for projects that had the potential for a ripple effect; the potential to impact more than just the artist."

For grantee Joan Zych, her Micro Grant is doing just that.

“I’m just so grateful for this grant. I’ve found that when kids in this program focus on art, their attendance improves, they complete their school work, they make the commitment to be part of something bigger, and they connect with others — all things that will enhance their lives down the road.”

As kids, our dreams for the future are shaped by our experiences. Thanks to philanthropy — and the magic of musical theater — kids from Title 1 schools throughout our community are DREAMING BIGGER DREAMS.

'BEST DAY EVER!' A special gift to Promising Futures gave kids from Title 1 schools throughout Sioux Falls the chance to experience an unforgettable day of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” at the Washington Pavilion.

Inside Taylor Wiley’s fourth grade classroom at Garfield Elementary in Sioux Falls, her students are absorbing knowledge. From long division, to reading and writing, to the wonders of science and so much more, Wiley is teaching her kids something new every day.

“It’s so important that we help open their eyes — that we show them what’s possible out there, and that we give them the chance to dream positive dreams.”

As Wiley teaches, she also learns.

She learns about her students. She learns about their strengths and their challenges. She learns about their hopes and dreams. And she learns that for many, life outside of school isn’t always easy.

So earlier this year, when Wiley learned that her students would have the opportunity to attend the off-Broadway production of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” at the Washington Pavilion, she felt an overwhelming sense of happiness.

Founder, Promising Futures

That’s because Garfield is a Title 1 school, which means it serves a high number of kids from low-income families. It is one of 10 Title 1 elementary schools in Sioux Falls.

“Going to the Washington Pavilion was big deal for our kids — it was a huge experience for them,” she said. “These kids don’t have a lot of the opportunities that other kids have. A lot of my class has never been to the Pavilion before. This experience opened their eyes to new possibilities.”

Students in Wiley’s class were among 2,200 kids from Title 1 schools who were able to attend a performance of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” thanks to a gift from the South Dakota Trust Company to Promising Futures, a fund held at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

Led by community advocate Steve Hildebrand, the goal of Promising Futures is to help end the poverty disadvantage in Sioux Falls by providing educational experiences that inspire kids to see themselves in a world outside of poverty.

Gifts to the fund help support efforts that increase both educational experiences and outsidethe-classroom experiences like field trips, tours, events, speakers and more.

“It’s so important that we help open their eyes — that we show them what’s possible out there, and that we give them the chance to dream positive dreams,” Hildebrand said.

For students in Wiley’s class, that’s exactly what happened.

As the lights dimmed inside the Pavilion’s Mary W. Sommervold Hall just prior to the opening scene of “Schoolhouse Rock Live,” kids began cheering — one student happily proclaiming: “This is the best day ever!”

During the show, Wiley stole glances of her class as they watched the actors on stage perform some of the show’s most iconic songs like “Conjunction Junction,” “I’m Just a Bill,” and “Three is a Magic Number.”

She saw her students’ faces light up.

“Afterwards, I heard girls in my class talking about how they wanted to be in a play some day,” Wiley said. “The experience truly did inspire them.”

Second graders from Hayward Elementary, another Title 1 school, also attended the show. Hayward Principal Derek Maassen called the experience meaningful and memorable.

“For many of our students, it was their first time riding a bus or going into the Washington Pavilion. An experience like this allows a student to build background, make connections and learn new things, which results in a deeper level of understanding. We are so thankful for the opportunity for our students to have this experience,” he said.

Creating opportunities for kids to dream is what inspired the South Dakota Trust Company to make the gift.

“We thought it would be awesome for students to be able to see this performance — and to experience the magic of the performing arts inside the beautiful Washington Pavilion.

And we were thrilled to be able to make that happen,” said Matt Tobin, managing director, chief operating officer and legal counsel for the South Dakota Trust Company. “We’ve always been impressed by the work of Promising Futures and we were grateful to be able to partner with them on this.”
