M E SSAGE FR O M THE P R E SID E NT When I meet with people throughout the community, I’m often asked, “what exactly does the Community Foundation do?”

The answer is quite simple: Here, we are dedicated to inspiring philanthropy. We connect generous individuals with ideas and causes to help spark strategic investments, creating a future where everyone can thrive.

We believe the Sioux Falls area is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. We also believe we have a responsibility to help preserve and sustain what’s good here, and to champion ideas and movements that have the potential to make our community even better.

Because of what we do, we’re often called a catalyst for good.

So for our 2019 Annual Report, we thought it would be fitting to celebrate others who stand as catalysts in our community – passionate individuals and important causes whose stories we feel privileged to be a part of; stories that illustrate the power of philanthropy in our area today.

For the Community Foundation, the 2018-2019 fiscal year is also something to celebrate. As you’ll see in the pages that follow, the Foundation’s growth and success is a direct result of the generosity of our community, the “can-do” spirit that exists here, and the commitment we all share to help build a better tomorrow.

As I look back on our last fiscal year, the following themes come to mind:

Record-Setting We’re proud to say the 2018-19 fiscal year was another one for the record books. We ended the year with more than $40 million in new gifts – up from $24 million in new gifts in 2017-18, and $17 million in new gifts in 2016-17. Today we are the trusted stewards of more than $179 million in assets, up from $100 million just five years ago. These numbers are

an extraordinary representation of the spirit of generosity alive in our community. And yet, they’re much more than numbers. As I often say, our asset number is really just short-hand for impact – impact made possible thanks to the generosity of others.

Gratitude and Reverence So much of the Foundation’s growth, as well as the correlating growth in our community impact, is due to the good work of many who came before us – community members, civic leaders, and our board members and staff.

There isn’t a day that goes by where we don’t feel incredibly humbled by the trust donors and community leaders continue to place in us. We’re reverent of that trust and of the responsibility that comes with it, but we’re also grateful for the opportunity we have to help make our area an even better place – not only for those who call it home today, but for future generations as well.

Building Community More and more, individuals are coming to the Foundation with ideas on how to make our community better. As a facilitator of dreams, we can match-make between charities we know well, important grant programs, visionary donors and thought leaders, and an innovative city that’s hungry to participate in building a better tomorrow. We have the privilege of convening these resources to help drive meaningful social impact and to create positive change for our community – granting more than $175 million to local nonprofits and causes since our founding, and more than $18 million in the last year alone!

So, on behalf of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, thank you for investing in our community. Your philanthropy, and your spirit of giving and care, are helping to create a stronger, more vibrant tomorrow for everyone who calls the Sioux Falls area home.

Today, thanks to the Foundation’s continued advocacy and support, the Hope Coalition is creating a brighter future for kids throughout our community.

Thanks to a recent grant from the Community Fund, Sioux Empire Wheels to Work is now poised to embark on a new campaign to further advance its mission: empowering families, one car at a time.

Last spring, aspiring young artists at Hawthorne Elementary got to spend a week working with Wade Patton, a well-known artist from western South Dakota, each day after school thanks to a grant from a donor advised charitable fund held at the Community Foundation. For the students, it was an unforgettable experience that showcased the true power of art.

Supported by a grant from the Hartford Area Community Foundation, a new public mural in Hartford symbolizes the community’s hopes and dreams for a future of collaboration, comradery and cohesiveness. It’s just one example of the many community-based initiatives led by our six affiliate community foundations.

Fueled by a desire to help build a better tomorrow, South Dakota Trust Company turned to us for support with an idea to help their clients from around the world give back to the state we all call home.

We helped the idea come to life and today, our local nonprofits – and those they serve – are benefitting.

While thousands of people enjoy the Japanese Garden each year, many might not know the area’s storied history, including how a passionate group of volunteers works with the Foundation to care and advocate for this special place in our community.

LEGACY OF CARE

Stretching tall over the Big Sioux River, the Arc of Dreams symbolizes the intersection of art and philanthropy. For us, it was an honor to help support this historic project.

A scholarship named to honor the legacies of Jim and Pat Croston, two individuals who dedicated their lives to teaching and caring for kids in Sioux Falls, is helping to support aspiring teachers. It’s just one of more than 150 scholarships we administer for donors who are passionate about investing in the future through education.

A CATALYST FOR

MEANING & PURPOSE At the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, we believe the arts are a means through which we can build community, discover connections and find inspiration.

It’s why we’re proud to say we’ve been supporting local arts organizations for more than 35 years and it’s why, for decades, we’ve featured local art on the cover of our annual reports.

When we commissioned Artist Hector Curriel to create a piece of artwork for the cover of our 2019 Annual Report, we knew he’d create something amazing.

We had no idea just how amazing.

“The Community Foundation is working to empower the community, so I wanted to create something to illustrate that,” Curriel said. “And I wanted to make it local – something people would recognize.”

The piece, titled “Catalysts,” also celebrates the cause-and-effect momentum Curriel said he sees when he looks at the place he’s called home for more than a decade.

“When I started, I thought about Falls Park – I believe it’s such a representation of our city.

When I went to the Falls, I watched the different

stages of the water, (so in this piece) I tried to represent stages or aspects of life – education, collaboration, diversity, families, the arts, connections, community,” Curriel said. “Then the Arc of Dreams kind of symbolizes how all these concepts come together to make dreams come true.”

The foundation for “Catalysts,” is the black, white, red and yellow colored squares – included, Curriel said, because of their significance within the Lakota culture.

From there, Curriel said each element in the piece represents a different kind of catalyst, each working together to create the vibrancy and momentum alive in the Sioux Falls area today.

The values of the Lakota people served as a catalyst for the sense of community that’s present in the Sioux Falls area today, he explained. Education is a catalyst for discovery and innovation. Collaboration is a catalyst for economic, social and cultural development.

The arts are a catalyst for finding inspiration, connection and common ground. Diversity is a catalyst for building understanding, perspective and inclusiveness. And relationships are a catalyst for joy, happiness, peace and love.

Finding the American Dream A native of Lima, Peru, Curriel’s interest in art developed at a young age. While in high school, he made the decision to pursue a career as an architect because he saw the field’s close connection to visual art.

Curriel made the decision to move to the U.S. in 2001. He was 35 years old and didn’t know a word of English, but he was passionate about finding something he’d heard about since he

was a boy. Something called the “American Dream.”

“I strongly believe that the new arrivals – immigrants, refugees – they come to improve their quality of life. They are people like me, with dreams – we see America as a place where you can really make your dreams come true,” he said.

Curriel settled in Worthington, Minnesota, and took a job working in construction. After work each day, he studied English through the Worthington School District’s collaborative adult education program. From there, he enrolled at Minnesota West Community and Technical College where he took additional courses in English, grammar and composition.

Building a Career as an Artist Reading a magazine during his lunch break at a construction site, Curriel saw an advertisement that changed his life.

“It was an ad from Art Instruction Schools, an art school in Minneapolis. It showed a picture and asked readers to draw the image to measure their skill as an artist. So I grabbed a pencil and just drew it. I tore the page out and mailed it in.”

“Six months later, I was living in Sioux Falls and got a letter from the school saying they’d like to meet me. They came from Minneapolis to meet me and my wife. I began taking courses, then I earned a scholarship,” he said.

Soon after, in 2008, Curriel took his U.S. Citizenship Test at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Center – an office that was, at the time, housed in a former train depot just off 8th Street in Sioux Falls. Today, that same

train depot is now home to the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

Reflecting on his life and career, Curriel said he feels lucky to be in Sioux Falls. “It’s a very unique city. We’re growing and changing – and I hope we can embrace that growth and change in a positive way so we can grow together as a community,” he said.

“Driving positive change and supporting our growing community are central to the mission of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation,” said Andy Patterson, president. “We’re honored to support local artists like Hector whose work illustrates the fabric of our community. Through this artist’s lens, we are reminded of the beauty and diversity which have helped make our community such a vibrant and dynamic place to live, work and play. And at the Foundation, this piece of art feels like a reflection of our mission to enrich the quality of life for our community.”

A CATALYST FOR

BOLD IDEAS

The seeds of great ideas are planted every day. But in order to drive true social impact, even the best ideas need a champion – a believer of the dream who’s willing to stand up and take a chance on the possibility of what could be.

Such was the case four years ago when the Community Foundation helped convene a coalition of dreamers, doers, believers and investors who helped create a preschool partnership program for families in need throughout our community.

If we’re lucky enough in life, every once in a while we have the opportunity to come across someone who has that certain something – a magical combination of dreamer and doer, thinker and believer; someone fueled by their passions and a deep-down motivation to do good, to strive for justice, and to bring bold ideas forward in an effort to help build a better tomorrow.

At the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, we count ourselves as especially lucky. Here, we have the privilege of working and collaborating with individuals and movements of people who meet this description quite often.

Driven by our mission and called by a sense of social responsibility, the most rewarding parts of our work are the opportunities to listen to new

ideas, to celebrate those who are bold and brave enough to bring them to the table, to connect the dots between our community’s needs and the charitable passions of our donors, and to convene philanthropists, nonprofits and civic partners in thoughtful dialogue around how to make a great idea become reality.

From there, the magic really happens. In collaboration with donors and community partners, we help develop creative solutions for our area’s most complex challenges, driving important social impact in fields such as education, human services, the arts, health care, community development and more.

But it all begins, we often say, when someone has a dream.

“Here, we believe that meaningful and important social impact comes from having the courage to dream big dreams and being willing to think outside the box,” said Patrick Gale, vice president, community investment.

This is the story of the Hope Coalition, a nonprofit organization that began as a dream more than four years ago. Today, thanks in part to the advocacy and support of the Community Foundation, the Hope Coalition is providing free preschool to families in need – providing hundreds of kids with the vital skills they’ll need to be successful not only in kindergarten, but throughout their academic careers and throughout their lives.

Dreaming The seeds for Hope Coalition were first planted a number of years ago after Randell Beck, former publisher of the Argus Leader, and Doug Morrison, a former member of the Sioux Falls School Board, read the book “Our Kids,” by Harvard Professor Robert Putnam.

“The book looked at our country’s growing income gap and its unintended consequences –

essentially creating the haves and the have-nots,” Beck said. “Right now, there are ‘working poor’ families right here in our community – moms and dads who can’t afford some of the most basic things for their kids.”

Driven by the book’s message and inspired to take action, Beck and Morrison turned to the Community Foundation.

“Looking at the demographic changes and the statistics in our city, an idea emerged that we should bring together some community leaders to study this thing and think about what we could do,” he said.

The Community Foundation made the decision to purchase more than 100 copies of “Our Kids” and helped distribute the books to leaders and community builders throughout Sioux Falls.

From there, a group of about 25 community members began to take shape, including leaders from the Community Foundation, the Sioux Falls School District, the City Council and other others, including a 36-year-old pastor named Rich Merkouris.

“We literally met for a year under the idea of, ‘Could we figure out one thing that would move the needle? Could this community meet the needs of our families – step into their lives, make a difference and hopefully avert generational poverty,’” Beck said. “We had experts come in from every quarter of Continues on next page

Listening to the idea, convening dialogue, collaborating with civic leaders and local philanthropists, and supporting the program with grant funding are all reasons why, Beck said, “the Community Foundation stands at the heart of this changing city and the people who want to make it a better place.”

“It’s not really about the money,” he said. “It’s about the idea and about being a champion for bold ideas on how to make the community better.

I think the Community Foundation is a great partner to be able to dream big.

Sioux Falls is a different place than it was a few decades ago. As our community continues to change in rich and important ways, we’re going to encounter problems and challenges. The Community Foundation is a problem solver – working to make this city what we want it to be.

the city. At the end of the year, there was a clear consensus that early childhood has a huge payoff. If you can have a child come into kindergarten ready to learn, you can change their life, the trajectory of their family and, if you get enough kids, you can change an entire community. So we resolved – preschool it was.”

From there, Beck said, the group put together a plan.

“We went to three churches, business leaders and the Community Foundation – organizations that are committed to making life better in the community. We said, ‘We want to mobilize existing resources for kids in need, for families who can’t afford preschool. This is an opportunity to change a child’s life.’”

Thanks to support from the Community Foundation, the Sioux Falls Hope Coalition was able to officially launch as a nonprofit in 2017.

That year, it provided free preschool to 40 kids from throughout the city at three partner locations. In 2018, two additional preschool locations signed on to become Hope Coalition preschool partners, meaning more opportunities to serve even more kids.

“Last year, we served 89 kids at five different preschool partners,” Beck said. “For this year, our goal was 150 kids. Right now we already have 153 kids signed up at eight different preschool partners.”

The Hope Coalition’s growth – and the difference it’s making – is due, in part, thanks to the continued support and advocacy of the Community Foundation, Beck said.

The program, education officials said, is making a difference.

Wade Helleson is the principal for Laura B. Anderson Elementary. Located on Wayland Avenue, not far from north Cliff Avenue and Smithfield Foods, the school serves students from one of the city’s most diverse and economically challenged neighborhoods.

According to Helleson, an early childhood program is an essential component for a student’s long-term success.

“Talk to any kindergarten teacher and they’ll know after the first day of school which kids were in an early childhood program and which kids were not. If (kids) already feel behind their peers who have that experience with socialization and rules … it just makes it a challenge for them.

It isn’t an easy thing to turn around. It requires support from teachers, counselors, our success coordinator, our assistant principal and myself.

Typically we spend a lot of effort supporting students who struggle in the kindergarten setting,” Helleson said.

“There’s a lot of research out there on the benefits of early childhood in general – its impact on society, its impact on individuals, reduced crime rates, savings for taxpayers and more,” Helleson said.

For Merkouris, the Hope Coalition represents a model for the future.

“The beauty of the Hope Coalition is that we’re not building new infrastructure. I think that’s the pathway going forward. The model of the Hope Coalition serves as an example of a model that can work for a variety of issues – businesses, churches, government and individuals coming together, allowing everyone to do their thing, yet benefiting the overall good.”

Collaborating Beyond its support for the Hope Coalition, Beck said he values the Foundation’s overall support of, and investment in, the community as a whole.

“I can’t think of (any organization) in Sioux Falls I’d rather talk to about ways to make the community better – and who’s a better listener and who better understands the importance of assembling resources to accomplish a dream,” he said.

Facilitating dreams and making connections, Gale said, are part of Community Foundation’s DNA. “We’ve made it our mission to seek out and identify needs and opportunities within our community. From there, we connect generous individuals with important causes, and we build thoughtful, collaborative partnerships – harnessing the power and purpose of philanthropy to mobilize resources and improve the quality of life in our area,” he said.

COLLABORATION

They are leaders, collaborators and philanthropists who are passionate about building a better tomorrow. Meet Bill and Lorrae Lindquist, our 2019 Friend of the Foundation Award honorees.

The Friend of the Foundation Award recognizes philanthropic individuals, families or businesses whose innovative and collaborative leadership and consistent generosity have impacted the Sioux Falls area and those who call it home.

For the team at the Community Foundation, the words innovative, collaborative, leadership and generous all came to mind when we sat down to describe our 2019 Friend of the Foundation Award honorees, Bill and Lorrae Lindquist.

Today, Bill serves as a senior financial advisor for The Lindquist Group, a division of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. He also holds the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) designation from the College of Financial Planning.

A certified public accountant, now retired from practice, Lorrae is an active community volunteer.

She currently serves as president of the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Board.

Together, Bill and Lorrae have dedicated their time, their talents and their treasure to help make

the Sioux Falls area an even better place to live, work and play.

“We extend our thanks and gratitude to Bill and Lorrae – two people who are truly champions for our community – for giving of themselves through philanthropy,” said Andy Patterson, president of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. “Bill and Lorrae are a communityminded couple who are deeply passionate about improving the quality of life for those in our area.

It’s our privilege to honor them with the Friend of the Foundation Award.”

Lifetimes of Service & Collaboration Throughout his career, Bill has been an active and engaged community volunteer. He’s served on boards for the YMCA, the Helpline Center, Augustana University, the South Dakota Symphony and the Children’s Home Society of South Dakota Foundation, just to name a few.

His own community involvement, he said, has enabled him to offer his clients insight on community needs. It also spurs additional philanthropic support for important and meaningful causes throughout the area.

“In my role, one thing I do early on with clients is ask, ‘What’s important to you? What motivates you? What do you want your money to do for you outside of taking care of yourself and your family – what are the things and organizations that you love?’” he said. “From a financial perspective, we then talk about how to maximize a gift to either give more, or to make it the best financial decision possible.”

When it comes to helping clients maximize or streamline their giving, Bill often refers clients to the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“It’s a fun thing to be able to give people an opportunity to do something significant that can

last a long time. The long-term viability for your money to do something forever – that’s the story of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation,” he said. “It’s giving people a chance to have their wealth – whatever that amount is – do something now and in perpetuity.”

Growing up in a small town, Lorrae saw her parents as role models for community engagement and the importance of giving back.

“My parents were part of the business community so they served on a lot of community boards,” she said. “So I saw early on the importance of giving back to your community and being involved in your community.”

Those early lessons stayed with Lorrae. Like her husband, she, too, has been an active community volunteer.

It was during her time with Junior League that Lorrae first began to collaborate with the Community Foundation. Serving as vice president, she and others began the work to establish an endowment at the Foundation.

“It’s a big leap of faith for nonprofits to give a portion of their money to the Foundation, but it’s worth it,” she explained. “I look at the small- to medium-sized nonprofits here – they simply don’t have the ability to administer an endowment fund on their own. They don’t have the legal expertise or the reporting expertise – so to do so on their own, the costs would be astronomical.

There would be a huge void here without the Community Foundation.”

Beyond their civic volunteerism, Bill and Lorrae are also active philanthropists, supporting a number of nonprofit organizations and causes throughout the area. Their giving, Patterson said, has inspired philanthropy in others – supporting what he sees as a growing culture of

giving, engagement and care throughout our community.

It’s a movement toward creating a brighter future for our community – and it’s gaining momentum.

“What I love about our city is that it’s not just one small group of people who are making things happen – a lot of people are involved in trying to build a better tomorrow,” Lorrae said. “And whatever your passion is, there’s someone who shares it with you.”

After the hearings, Hattervig said she would watch these women try to navigate life as a single, working parent without a car. “These mothers had to work – staying home was not an option. So these women would have to take the bus to get their kids to daycare, then get themselves to work, then do the whole thing over again at the end of the day.”

At that point, Hattervig got mad. “I was so frustrated. I went back to my office and started thinking,” she said. “I called all my friends who worked in other helping agencies and we got together to brainstorm how we could help people. We started by doing a survey to establish proof that transportation was indeed a problem.”

EMPOWERMENT Each year, we award grants to area nonprofits doing important work for our neighbors in need. This is the story of Sioux Empire Wheels to Work, an organization that’s changing lives and empowering families, one car at a time.

Sometimes, before you can make a difference, you have to get mad.

As an attorney for East River Legal Services, Karen Hattervig had spent most of her career representing abused women. She described the role as one part lawyer, one part social worker.

At times, the work was difficult and challenging; at other times, heart-wrenching. Still, she loved the job and believed her efforts mattered.

But, through the years, she said she identified a troubling trend. While representing her clients in divorce hearings, Hattervig saw a number of legal decisions that awarded the woman custody of the family’s children while awarding the man ownership of the family’s primary vehicle.

After researching vehicle donation programs throughout the U.S., Hattervig made the decision to form Sioux Empire Wheels to Work, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering families through safe, reliable and affordable transportation. Since its founding about 20 years ago, Hattervig estimates the organization has given away between 400-500 cars.

Today, thanks to a recent grant from the Community Foundation, Sioux Empire Wheels to Work is now poised to embark on a new awareness campaign designed to further advance its mission.

The grant was provided through the Community Fund, our most visionary endowment supported by unrestricted gifts and designed to provide useful funding for local nonprofits.

THIS PAST YEAR

Changing Lives Over the years, Hattervig says she’s learned a lot and has refined her processes. “At first, we started out just accepting any car we were given – trusting that people would only donate cars that worked. Then, it turned out a lot of cars we were receiving were junk – filled with more problems than they were worth,” she said.

At that point, Tires, Tires, Tires, a local automotive repair business, heard about Wheels to Work and contacted Hattervig with an offer to help.

Today, Tires, Tires, Tires evaluates Wheels to Work’s donated vehicles and makes any necessary repairs, free of charge. Once a car has been reviewed and has had any repairs done, Hattervig can begin the process of awarding the car to someone on the organization’s waiting list.

To qualify for a vehicle from Wheels to Work, applicants must meet the following criteria: He or she must be a single parent; must be living alone with his or her children; must have a job or be going to school to train for a job; must have a South Dakota driver’s license; must live in either Minnehaha or Lincoln County; and must not own another working vehicle.

New Beginnings Looking back over the years, Hattervig said she has countless memories of individuals whose lives were changed after receiving a car through Wheels to Work.

“One parent told me that receiving a car meant that now, she could go to parent-teacher conferences,” she said. “Another parent said having a car meant that her child could finally be involved in extra-curricular activities.

Without a car, she had no way to get her child to or from school for the practices and games.

Now she could.”

Gale called the program a game-changer for families in need. “Most of us get in and out of our cars multiple times a day – taking for granted how very blessed we are to have a reliable source of transportation,” he said.

“For those in our community who do not have a car, an average day is so much more complicated. So we’re inspired by the work Karen is doing on behalf of Sioux Empire Wheels to Work to connect families with vehicles and we’re proud to support this great program that is enhancing the quality of life for so many in our community.”

POWER OF ART Hawthorne Elementary Art Teacher Lisa Brunick had been thinking about new ways to inspire and motivate her students. The dream? Invite well-known artist Wade Patton to spend a week at the school, working with aspiring young artists each afternoon. We loved the idea and presented it to donors who are passionate about the arts. A grant, made on the recommendation of Tom and Beth Masterson, from the “Lindsey Ann Masterson Memorial Arts Serving Youth” fund held at the Community Foundation made this art teacher’s dream a reality — and in doing so, created an unforgettable experience for these students.

A BETTER TOMORROW The Hartford Area Community Foundation is one of six affiliated foundations working to enhance the vitality of our local communities.

In addition to our work in the Sioux Falls metro area, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation also oversees affiliate community foundations in Brandon, Canton, Dell Rapids, Hartford, Lennox and Tea. Led by local volunteers, these foundations are dedicated to providing leadership that inspires philanthropy and enriches the quality of life for individuals and families.

Last summer, thanks in part to a grant from the Hartford Area Community Foundation, Hartford residents came together to transform a 30-foot wall into a colorful illustration of their community’s past and present. Today, the community mural symbolizes Hartford’s hopes and dreams for a future of collaboration, comradery and cohesiveness.

The grant helped project organizers work with Amber Hansen, an assistant professor at the University of South Dakota, to create a composition for the mural. From there, any Hartford resident was free to pick up a brush and add strokes of color.

Jesse Fonkert is the director of the Hartford Area Development Foundation. He said the mural is

an “opportunity for our community to see itself in the mirror as it represents our past, present and thoughts on our future.”

“The process itself has helped strengthen our community by bringing together Hartford area residents that share an interest for art, history and unity. Our completed mural has brought more people into our downtown. I work in the building next to the mural and each day I witness folks stopping to take time to absorb the imagery. Now, thanks to grants and support from organizations like the Hartford Area Community Foundation, we as citizens of Hartford share in public art that represents all of us.”

Fonkert said the Hartford Community Foundation, as well as the West Central Education Foundation, have helped shape the community by supporting projects that offer a positive and dynamic atmosphere for families.

“Each organization has contributed to an increase in our quality of life not just by their giving and financial gifts, but also by the passion that each member brings to the community. Specifically, support from the Hartford Area Community Foundation has made projects such as the new Siouxland Libraries – Hartford Branch, or improvements to our Bike & Recreation Trail realities. Our Education Foundation issues grants to West Central teachers that utilize the funds to bring valuable experiences to our students or raise money for big projects such as the new band shell that increases the sound quality at band and choir events,” he said.

So eventually Matt Tobin, the firm’s managing director and chief operating officer, developed an idea to make it easier.

The firm established the South Dakota Trust Company Foundation, an endowment fund held at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“We encourage all of our clients to give back to South Dakota,” Tobin said. “So now, we can say, ‘you can either give directly to an organization or a cause. Or, as an alternative, if you don’t know where to give, you can give to our foundation which supports nonprofits throughout the state.’”

Today, the firm holds both a donor advised endowment fund and a donor advised charitable fund at the Community Foundation.

INNOVATION Inspired to do more, South Dakota Trust Company came to the Community Foundation with an idea to help their clients from around the world give back to the state we all call home.

Fueled by a desire to help build a better tomorrow, the leadership team at South Dakota Trust Company first began encouraging their clients to give back to the state’s nonprofit industry shortly after the firm’s founding in 2002.

The idea was a noble one, but it also proved challenging, according to Pierce McDowell, South Dakota Trust Company co-founder and president.

Challenging because, McDowell said, although clients from outside South Dakota wanted to support the state’s nonprofit organizations, they didn’t always know where to give, or who to give to.

“We had the idea that we wanted to build something that would last a long time and so we established the endowment,” Tobin said.

“We also wanted to be active right away, so that’s why we created the charitable fund.”

Tobin said establishing the foundation has been a great way to help clients give back to the state.

McDowell agreed. “These families that we’ve been fortunate enough to serve – we want them to consider themselves citizens of our state. Family and roots are important to us. Our business is about families and life and service, so doing this type of thing is important,” he said.

“It’s important work that’s making a difference,” McDowell and Tobin said, sharing that the South Dakota Trust Company Foundation’s endowment recently reached $1 million.

A Good Partner Tobin said working with the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has been a positive experience.

“I think they’ve been really good for us – handling the administrative side and helping us facilitate grants,” he said.

Tobin also said he values the insights and analysis offered by the Foundation’s Community Investment division – a team dedicated to working with local nonprofits and causes to understand community needs, explore possibilities and help develop solutions.

A LEGACY OF CARE Jim and Pat Croston dedicated their lives to teaching. To honor their legacies, their son turned to the Community Foundation for help in creating a scholarship in their names to support aspiring teachers.

From as far back as she can remember, Abigail Freese knew she wanted to be a teacher.

She can even recall how she felt the first time she witnessed an “ah-ha” moment – that flash of joy and relief a student experiences at that magical point of understanding – after helping her twin brother, Josh, with a math assignment. “I explained to him a lesson he wasn’t understanding, and the smile on his face when he finally got it made me smile,” Freese wrote. “It was as if I had made a difference for him that day. Ever since … I have craved that feeling of helping others and making an impact on students.”

Freese is now a student at the University of South Dakota majoring in secondary math education. As she enters her senior year at USD, support from the Jim and Pat Croston Family Scholarship, administered through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, is helping to ease some of the financial burden associated with attaining her degree.

This year, the Community Foundation awarded over $400,000 in scholarships to more than 150 local students. The scholarships are “funded by donors who are passionate about investing in the future through the power of education and are administered by the Foundation,” said Patrick Gale, the Community Foundation’s vice president for community investment.

Passionate donors like Kevin Croston, who created the Jim and Pat Croston Family Scholarship to honor the legacy of his parents, two life-long educators whose love for teaching still shines through today.

‘A Wonderful Life’ Reflecting on their careers in education, Jim and Pat Croston still smile at memories from their time in the classroom.

Jim spent 18 years teaching math and science at Edison Junior High (now Edison Middle School) and 17 years at Axtel Park Junior High, first as an assistant principal, then as principal.

Pat taught specialized reading at Franklin Elementary and language arts and social studies at Patrick Henry Junior High (now Patrick Henry Middle School). She also served as an assistant principal at Hawthorne Elementary and as principal at Lowell Elementary.

Looking back, the couple, who have been married for 62 years, say they feel lucky. “We reminisce quite often and always say, ‘What a wonderful life we’ve had,’” Pat said. “Getting to work with kids – it almost keeps you young.

To this day, we still have former students that come up to us when we’re out and about to say thanks. That’s the reward of teaching.”

Honoring the Past, Creating Possibility for the Future Kevin Croston was trying to find a way to celebrate his parents and honor the legacy of care and dedication they built throughout their careers when he came upon the idea of creating a named scholarship for aspiring teachers. He turned to the Community Foundation for help in establishing and administering the Jim and Pat Croston Family Scholarship. In addition to celebrating Jim and Pat’s careers, the scholarship also recognizes the teaching career of Kevin’s sister, Kelly.

“The Foundation was so terrific. Their openness to working with us and their willingness to make my parents feel a part of the selection process was so great,” Kevin said. “Because of that flexibility and that relationship, we set that fund up and since then, my parents have gotten to feel like they’ve been making a difference for young people going into education. I don’t know if you can give a better gift than that.”

The Jim and Pat Croston Family Scholarship, Kevin said, is not only an investment in the future; it also recognizes two people who dedicated their lives to a cause they loved.

“The thing about my parents, which I think is such a gift to the kids they taught, and to the scholarship recipients – is that they really loved what they did. They both think they won

Administering scholarships is another way the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation is helping to create a better tomorrow, Kevin said.

“I believe we have a responsibility as a community to help each other get better and provide opportunities for others,” he said.

“I got that from my parents. That’s how they were – they were constantly helping students with their homework, helping our family and helping others. I think the Community Foundation really embraces that community spirit in a way that reflects my beliefs and my parents’ beliefs.”

VITALITY IN THE COMMUNITY

After a group of passionate and engaged citizens rallied together to help restore the Japanese Garden nearly 30 years ago, they turned to the Community Foundation for help in creating an endowment to assist with annual costs related to maintaining and caring for this special area.

This is a story about how one endowment assists our community in providing a peaceful place to enjoy nature’s beauty and tranquility, today and forever.

Since the 1930s, the Japanese Garden at Terrace Park has been the backdrop for countless special memories. From senior portraits to marriage proposals, weddings and family reunions, generations of families have selected the Garden for memorable moments mostly because of its unique features, such as quartzite

stone pagodas and lanterns, shaded benches, thoughtful landscaping, a waterfall and stone sculptures.

While thousands of people enjoy the Japanese Garden each year, it’s hard to know how many know of the area’s storied history, including how a small group of passionate citizens called the Shoto Teien Japanese Garden Committee worked to rescue that portion of Terrace Park from disrepair in the late 1980s, reintroduced it the community in the early 1990s and, in partnership with the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, continue to care and advocate for the Garden even today.

Different Skills, All Working Together In the mid-1980s, an Argus Leader story outlined how years of vandalism had caused the Japanese Garden to fall into disrepair. The story

featured an interview with Sioux Falls resident Jim Bailey, who was hoping to spur interest in restoring the Garden.

Mary Ellen Connelly, a local master gardener, read that Argus Leader article with interest.

She’d always felt that public gardens added to the vitality of a community – offering a place for meditation, inspiration, tranquility and, perhaps most importantly, for one to find connections at the intersection of art and nature. She reached out to Bailey to learn more about his ideas.

Across town, Rich Garry, a financial planner, read that same Argus Leader story. He, too, was interested in restoring the Garden, so he also contacted Jim Bailey.

Soon, a group of 18-20 area residents joined together to form what eventually became known as the Shoto Teien Japanese Garden Committee.

Working to match funding offered through the City’s Capital Improvement Program, over the next few years each committee member volunteered their time, talents and treasures to help raise the money necessary to restore the area. The restored Japanese Garden was formally dedicated in 1991.

Planning for the Future After the restoration project was complete, members of the Shoto Teien Japanese Garden Committee met to decide what to do next.

Pam Jansa was the committee’s treasurer at the time. She urged the committee to consider establishing an endowment at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation to help preserve the Garden for future generations.

Garry agreed. “We knew we wanted to get the money someplace where one, it was safe – professionally watched over and managed,” he said. “Two, we knew that even though we’d just completed the Garden, there would be

Under the thoughtful leadership of Committee President Dick Dempster, the Shoto Teien Japanese Garden Committee had also been in communication with Ben Chu, the horticulture supervisor for the renowned Japanese Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden. After touring the restored Garden, Chu agreed to visit Sioux Falls on an annual basis to help prune and maintain the Garden’s trees and shrubs. Chu’s yearly visit, along with excellent care and maintenance provided by the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department, helps to maintain the Garden’s beauty today.

“So we made the decision to open an endowment at the Community Foundation.

Because of the interest earned through the Foundation, we’ve been able to pay for Ben to come to Sioux Falls for the last 28 years without dipping into the principal,” Garry said. “Without having the Foundation taking care of the money professionally, we’d never have been able to have Ben come every year. We’re so lucky that we have the Community Foundation here that people can use – for their charitable wishes, or to do like we did – ensuring (the money) will always be available to help with the Garden.”
