Prestige Homes Magazine

Spring is well and truly here, the evenings are growing longer and nature is bursting into action all around us. It’s the perfect time to highlight some of the inspirational homes and locations we offer from our network of offices, each of which is owned and run by the partners in that location.

This is why our service offers the best of both worlds - twenty offices across Surrey create an exceptional interconnected network which is based on truly local knowledge and experience.

Even more than that, our innovative co-operative yet entrepreneurial model means that we are renowned for pioneering new ways of working. These are just a few of the reasons we sell more prestigious homes than any of our rivals in the areas we cover.

This latest edition of our magazine has a superior mix of celebrity interviews, lifestyle features and insightful property tips aimed at both sellers and buyers. It’s a great way to showcase the type of high value properties we sell, the informed advice we can give and the way we stand out from the crowd in a competitive marketplace.

We approach every client with an open mind and listen carefully to what they have to say, respectfully tailoring our services to their needs. As our offices are strategically located around Surrey we are able to give you access to an estate agent who knows how the towns and villages are themselves each different from one another. For buyers of course this can be an invaluable tool that helps fine-tune their search for a new property.

ART INSPIRATION

Seymours Prestige Homes speak to Alison Ramsay and Emma Riley, founders of The Art Agency in Esher, for expert advice on choosing art for your home.

Artists

From its two Surrey bases – Esher and a new centre in Oxshott, the Art Agency represents more than 30 artists and our aim is to have as broad a portfolio as possible to appeal to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Some of our artists are local while others are from all over the world. Visitors to our gallery will find a mixed collection of original artwork, limited edition prints, sculpture and ceramics with prices ranging from £50 to £5000. Some of our more unusual pieces include Lene Bladbjerg’s handpainted butterflies on knife blades and the glitter pill and resin popsicles by Emma Gibbons, who previously worked for Damien Hirst.

Logistics

For maximum effect, a painting needs room to breathe around it but, at the same time, make sure that it doesn’t look lost in a space. As a general rule, hang a picture at eye level - this is especially important with a piece of portraiture. We have a professional picture hanger who is an expert in working with tricky spaces.

Try before you buy

Our ‘Try Before You Buy’ scheme is extremely popular. A customer can take home pieces of art to try in their home for a few days without any obligation to buy - it gives them time to make a decision without any pressure.

Affordable art

We are members of the Own Art scheme which allows customers to spread the cost of buying artwork, interest free over ten months. It’s a great initiative funded by the Arts Council and was set up to support independent galleries and living artists.

True value

Original artwork is unique and the decision to buy a piece is completely different from other spending choices. Your art collection expresses your personality and taste and infuses your interiors with vital energy.

For more information, visit theartagency.co.uk

Our advice is always to buy what you love and don’t play it too safe - be bold and take a risk. If you have an emotional response to a piece of art, then it’s likely to be a far more successful addition to your collection than a painting purchased on the basis that it simply matched your decor.

RAISE A GLASS!

We catch up with Sibylla Tindale, founder of High Clandon one of the area’s prestigious wine producers to tell us more about the Vineyards of the Surrey Hills collaboration.

The Vineyards of the Surrey Hills is a collaboration of five vineyards nestled in the glorious Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, comprising five outstanding local producers: Denbies Wine Estate, High Clandon, Albury Organic Vineyard, Chilworth Manor and Greyfriars, the collaboration was launched in 2017 to celebrate the combined excellence of these award-winning English wines.

Sibylla Tindale along with her husband Bruce owns High Clandon, a beautiful vineyard set in East Clandon just minutes from Guildford. It produces a range of multi-award winning Cuvees created in the classic method - Méthode Champenoise which are aged to perfection for five years.

As well as being an esteemed producer, Sibylla is a fervent supporter of the other growers that make up the Vineyards of the Surrey Hills.

“What makes us special is the locale – the terroir producing gloriously flavoured grapes which become award-winning wines, both sparkling and still - and each is set in the most beautiful rolling hills of the Surrey downs,” she explains. “Warm welcomes, easy to reach, glorious wines grown in our chalky terroir – the same geology as that of the famous Champagne region in France.”

According to Sibylla, the individual vineyards produce their own distinct varieties which adds to the choice for buyers without adding to the competition of the producers.

“It’s almost like a smorgasbord,” she explains. “We all have a niche with something different to offer wine lovers.”

She says that their individuality is also reflected in the events that offered throughout the year at the various vineyards, that includes tours, tastings, walks, weddings and even yoga classes.

One thing you can be assured of at all the locations is a warm welcome. “Yes, we are all very happy to meet people who come to the area to sample the produce. We are here to offer a taste of Surrey and to showcase this special county,” she adds.

Albury Organic Vineyard

Founder Nick Wenman had dreamed of owning a vineyard for 40 years. So after retiring from the IT industry in 2009, he seized his chance, creating a family-run business that has sustainability at its core.

According to the team: “Our focus is not just on the environment, it’s about valuing people and contributing to society, now and in the future. We’re committed to shaping the future of the UK wine industry through educating and inspiring others to strive towards greater sustainability.”

The vineyard produces a mix of still and sparkling wines – notably its multi-award winning Blanc de Noirs which scooped a 2022 Independent English Wine Award and earned Gold in the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Chilworth Manor Vineyard

Set in the historic surrounds of Chilworth Manor the vineyard comprises a 10-acre, south-facing site that provides fertile ground for the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier grapes that make up a range of delicious wines.

The family team is led by Mia and Graham who consider themselves the ‘guardians of Chilworth Manor’s history.

Made from hand-picked Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, the Chilworth Manor Brut 2017 uses only the superior first gentle press of juice to ensure its golden hue or you could opt for Chilworth Manor Brut Rosé – ‘a classic method sparkling wine, vibrant pastel pink in colour with youthful purple hues and a delicate mousse.’

Denbies Wine Estate

One of Surrey’s most popular destinations, the Dorking-based vineyard has been flourishing on the slopes of the North Downs since 1986. As one of England’s largest single wine estates, it boasts 265 acres which are currently under vine, with a capacity to produce one million bottles.

Visitors can enjoy a walk around its sumptuous setting, a meal in the restaurant or a browse around the extensive gift shop. There are tastings and tours galore and now even a hotel so you can extend your wine adventure even longer.

Denbies offers an array of award-winning red, white rose and orange wines, as well as sparkling varieties, including the Greenfields NV, an ‘elegant fizz’ which took Gold at the 2019 Independent English Wine Awards.

Greyfriars Vineyard

Billed as Surrey’s finest fizz, the Hoggs Back-based vineyard has been run by Mike and Hilary Wagstaff since 2011. One of the first in England to plant the traditional Champagne grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier) the 40 acres is now also home to Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc varieties. According to the team, the aim is: “Not just to produce a Champagne ‘copy’ but rather to create a small range of great sparkling wines which reflects the unique geology, soil conditions, climate and heritage of the wonderful landscape of the Surrey North Downs.”

The award-winning sparkling wines - Greyfriars Classic Cuvee and Greyfriars Vintage - have now been joined by a range of still wines Rose and Yvonne, with the latter being commissioned as a tribute to the women who risked their lives as part of the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War.

The Summer Spectacular

This summer, we are each hosting special events to mark our joint Summer Spectacular at the end of English Wine Week. High Clandon will consist of Open Days combined with a preview of its Art & Sculptures in the Vineyard and with prebookable ‘Battle of Waterloo Taste-off’ of four of our vineyards’ award-winning English Sparkling wines vs two Champagnes and hosted by a wine expert and raconteur. Sibylla says the ‘battle’ was a great success when we ran it in 2019 and as expected, like Napoleon, the champagnes were routed!

Visiting the Vineyards

The Vineyards of the Surrey Hills is this summer launching a ‘Passport’ to encourage visitors to explore and experience the five vineyards set in their locales. The Passport will offer the holder a gift from each vineyard visited and they then, after getting a stamp from a minimum of three vineyards, can then enter a prize draw to win a case of Vineyards of the Surrey Hills sparkling and still wines valued at c. £200.

English Wine Week:

English Wine Week runs from June 17 to June 25 and is an annual event to raise awareness of English wines to the wider public. Throughout the week there will be opportunities to tour and taste outlets across the country, as well as promotions in supermarkets, independent wine stores, hotels, pubs, restaurants and bars.

This space is very much open to interpretation in its use, currently a beautifully airy sitting/dining room with exceptional views out over the rear garden and a set of bi-folding doors which lead out onto a large area of decking covered by a vine clad loggia. As with the house, the garden has been landscaped with huge imagination and thought and is very much part of what makes this such an exceptional home. Around the back of the house there are various terrace areas which wrap around from the side to rear enjoying a sunny south and west aspect. A recent edition at cost of circa £60k is a stunning Eco Cabin complete with air con and sliding doors out to the gardens. This is currently used as a gym and home office and offers an incredible retreat that is both visually pleasing and practical. Some of this area is covered by vine clad loggias which create a wonderful spot for eating outside during the spring and the summer months.

Once again this has been created with every thought given to the detail and is a superb solid oak framed structure with a glass roof, a built in barbecue, hob, pizza oven, wine fridge and beautiful slate worksurfaces. It is unusual to say the least to see an outside cooking area of this quality and it works extremely well.

WORD PERFECT

For this edition of Seymours Prestige Homes Magazine, we caught up with Countdown TV celebrity Susie Dent to find out more about the nation’s favourite etymologist and lexicographer, and her Secret Life of Words tour.

Susie Dent has ruled Dictionary Corner on Channel 4’s flagship daytime show Countdown for more than 30 years and also acts as a steadying presence on the show’s ‘after-hours’ version, Eight out of Ten Cats Does Countdown, hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr.

Alongside her TV work, the Woking-born, mum of two has published 14 books all about, yes you guessed it, words. Her latest, An Emotional Dictionary, was released in October 2022 and is packed with information about forgotten words and phrases that have been used throughout the centuries to express how we feel. A lifelong lover of etymology (she studied Modern Languages at Oxford University), Susie has admitted that during lockdown she sought sanctuary in her dictionaries searching for words that captured the shared experience.

For the past six months the 58-year-old has been holding court across the country on her Secret Life of Words tour which promised an exploration of the ‘curious, unexpected, and downright surreal origins of the words we use every day’.

What made you want to go on tour?

The response I’ve received over the years to my word origins stories on Countdown made me realise how much we all care about language. So I decided it would be lovely to collect and share my greatest hits with new audiences, and to hear their questions as to where words come from, which words they would like to ban, and which they can’t get enough of.

You have been on the road now for quite some time. How is it going?

I’ve genuinely been so chuffed with the interactions of those coming to the show. And we have had quite a few laughs too.

Thinking about your ‘Word of the Day’ on Twitter, do you ever struggle to come up with a word?

Most of them are inspirations of the moment! A news story might catch my eye, or it might be a word that describes exactly how I’m feeling at that precise point. If I find I’ve overslept, for example, my word of the day might well be ‘hurkle-durkling’: old Scots for lounging in bed long after it’s time to get up.

With all the text speak and image and videoled social media are you surprised that people are still interested in the language?

No not at all. In fact, I think we are more interested than ever. I find it exciting to see English evolving right before our eyes - thanks not least to the new media available to us. There has never been a golden age of the

language when English stood still and no one made mistakes. And there will always be changes that some of us don’t like, and others that we do. But as long as we notice them and care about them, I believe English will be in good shape.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?

I’ve just written An Emotional Dictionary, which charts the known and unknown vocabulary for our many feelings and thoughts. It turns out there is a word for looking longingly at someone else’s food (that’s groaking), and for the joy we feel in the happiness of someone we love (confelicity). It feels really important to explore such words at a time when our emotions have been on a very long rollercoaster ride.

What led you to become a lexicographer?

I began working on French and German dictionaries - my first love - and then moved onto English lexicons. I only discovered the joys of etymology quite late on, and I’m so glad I did!

What were your feelings when you were asked to join Countdown?

Terror, imposter syndrome and wonder!

Is it hard to switch between the original version and Eight out of 10 Cats Does Countdown?

It was at first, when I was convinced I needed to be as funny as the comedians, knowing full well that I’m not! But I’ve realised that I am simply there to do my job, as well as laugh a lot. Both of those I can do! I’m very privileged to enjoy the brilliance of the show’s comedians at first hand.

Are you pleased that without changing the format too drastically ‘Cats’ has opened up a whole new audience?

It’s been great to witness our audiences laughing their heads off at the comedy of the show whilst also being determined to crack the letters and numbers rounds. That’s the joy of Countdown: you can’t help but join in. I think ‘Catsdown’ has also reminded many people about a show they grew up with but perhaps haven’t tuned into for a while.

Do you have a favourite Dictionary Corner companion?

So many! I would always put Chris Packham on my list - he is so knowledgeable and passionate, I could listen to him for hours. I love Jo Brand, who always comes up with her own ingenious nine-letter words, and [explorer] Sir Ranulph Fiennes gave me goose bumps with the stories of his adventures. There are many, many more. It really is impossible to choose.

Finally, what are your fondest memories of growing up in Surrey, and what one word would you use to sum up the county?

I loved the freedom of growing up in Surrey. I would take off on my bike and find a patch of grass or stretch of water to sit by and daydream. Those were my halcyon days. As for a single word, it would have to be ‘flippercanorious’: an old adjective meaning ‘blooming wonderful’!

Susie Dent’s latest book, An Emotional Dictionary, is available from all good bookshops.
