How to Apply for BIS Certification in India Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification is provided in India by the Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards body has been successfully stimulating and nurturing the standards within the country since 1947.It falls under the aegis of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. It involves various activities like standards formulation, certification, testing and calibration, hallmarking etc. Its main objective is to certify the products and management systems to be safe and reliable for use by the public.

BIS product certification is one of the largest in the world covering more than 900 products. It permits the licenced users to use the ISI mark on their product, indicating the quality of products.

BIS Certification is provided in for products under different schemes: 1. Normal Procedure for Domestic Manufacturer The applicant is required to submit the BIS certification application along with the documents and prescribed fees. After submission a BIS officer conducts a preliminary factory evaluation. The product samples are then taken for independent testing. If the sample is up to the standard the

certificate is provided within 4 months of the submission of application.

2. Simplified Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers As the name suggests simplified procedure, here, the applicant submits the test report of the sample from a BIS approved lab along with the application. If the test reports are satisfactory the BIS officer carries out a verification of the factory premises. If satisfied, the licenced is issued within 30 days of application.

3. Tatkal scheme The manufacturers who need the BIS certificate mandatorily as per government can obtain license under this scheme. Under this the application is processed under strict timelines and the total time for the processing is 30 days. Also the applications received are processed on priority basis, with adherence to the norms.

4. Eco Mark Scheme BIS certification for eco-friendly products is granted under separate scheme. To obtain the Eco Mark the products should qualify the requirements specified in Indian Standards. However, this procedures is restricted only to Domestic manufacturers.

Mandatory products for BIS Certification Certain products are mandatory to have BIS certification in India considering public health, safety and welfare. These products are covered under Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). The CRS is further divided in two classifications:



Scheme I(ISI Mark Scheme) It includes about 107 products like cement, circuit breakers, electric iron, electric heaters, packaged drinking water, infant milk substitute etc. the

manufacturers of these products need ISI certification before launching them into the market. The process of ISI certification is just like that of the BIS registration i.e. samples are sent for testing. On approval, BIS officers inspect the factory premises and on full satisfaction the ISI certification is done.

Scheme II(Registration Scheme) It consists of about 50 products majorly including electronic items, information technology equipment, solar photovoltaic, secondary cells, batteries for photovoltaic etc. this scheme was brought in 2012

by Department of Electronics and Information Technology and BIS. It is now regulated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Bureau of Indian Standard.

Steps for BIS Certification 1. Sign in with User ID and password. If you are a new user, click new product registration. Click here to register now.

2. Next, fill form VI. 3. Make payment as required.

4. After making payment, click on submit button.

5. You will receive an auto-generated with the application number.

6. Submit the hard copy of application within 15 days along with the test report (not older than 30 days).

7. BIS will scrutinize the application. In case of any query or objection, the applicant may clear it online.

8. After the objection is addressed and affidavit cum undertaking is submitted. Registration is granted.
