Editorial E d itorial & Ed Co-Ordinator Co-O Ord dinator Update Update Emma Rose She/her Peer Health Educator This issue of RED grew out of the informal structures that the sex work community was founded on. Being new to this role, I was grateful to be connected to friends of friends of contacts, and reflected on the essential common threads that tie sex workers together. While our word-of-mouth networks of underground referrals originate in our need for safety, they help maintain a strong community grounded in trust, boldness and empathy.

It was this community strength, that culminated in the passing of the Sex Work Decriminalisation Act 2022. While lots of us feel as though it is a bit late, and that the Act still needs vital changes, it is a huge achievement for the community stemming from decades of tireless work. Sex workers have had each others’ backs forever, and we won’t cease our fight for full-decriminalisation until every sex worker experiences equality under law and regulations.

Since issue #38 of RED came out, sex workers based offline have been allowed to return to work. If the covid-19 restrictions helped me realise anything, it was how strongly tied I felt to the sex work community. There is a grief that comes with being suddenly ripped from your peers, which was thankfully softened by access to online sex worker spaces. The more we all contribute to building community-based events, spaces, and initiatives, the stronger our community becomes. I hope this issue inspires you to embed yourself deeper and deeper in the sex work community through shared stories, elevating your peers, mutual aid, or political engagement.

This issue reflects the incredible strength, wisdom, and resilience of our community. However despite all our virtues, no group is perfect, and I hope this issue contributes some food-forthought in how we can work together to make the sex work community even stronger. The experience of community is different for each member, and maybe in this issue you’ll find new spaces to occupy, or ways to make the community better for others.

If you are new to the sex work community, welcome! You’ve joined a loyal and clever bunch. I hope you find a symbiotic relationship with your new group through a reciprocal sharing of energy. It’s important to know that you have come from a long line of incredible sex workers before you. Spend some time getting to know the history of your community, and while it’s important to forge your own path, the wisdom you’re offered by veterans is often invaluable.

A special thank you to all the sex workers who contributed their thoughts, energy and time to this issue of RED magazine. You typify what makes this community so special, and without your generosity this magazine wouldn’t exist. If you’re reading this thinking that your words, art, or ideas aren’t worth submitting to RED magazine, I promise you’re wrong. Every worker has something important to contribute, and if you feel something similar has been contributed before, it certainly hasn’t been from your perspective. This magazine is for and by the community so please get in touch if you have thoughts or feedback.

Covid-19 continues to affect all of us in a myriad of ways as new variants emerge and restrictions change. Learning to live with the virus feels like a cliché for us now, yet this has involved such a major shift for us away from lockdowns, however has manifested in us needing to question our movements and the decisions we make about who we interact with on a daily basis. We know many of us continue to be affected by the long terms impacts of this virus – please remember that social connections with your community are just as important to maintain as the social (we prefer physical!) distancing! The RhED program continues to be available to support you, so please do not hesitate to get in touch – we are a passionate bunch and love to hear from the community!

Whilst Covid-19 continues to dominate the media, and all our lives, let us not forget the incredible efforts of the sex work community that has resulted in positive law reform through the sex work decriminalisation bill. We want to congratulate and pay our respects to all sex worker advocates and allies that have lobbied tirelessly over the course of decades and most recently during a global pandemic to enact these progressive changes. Sex work is real work and sex worker rights are human rights. It is paramount that current legislation reflects these statements. We want to acknowledge the incredible mobilisation, advocacy, passion and resilience of the entire sex work community.

Thank you for continuing to work with us and for enabling us to be the best we can be as a program for the industry. As always, we welcome your feedback on how we can do better. We know that decriminalisation is, albeit an important step towards ending stigma and discrimination, only one part. We know there will be future advocacy and education required across the general community as well as further progressive law reform that we will continue to advocate for.

In terms of updates for the RhED program, sadly we farewelled Katie in October of 2021.

Katie, as many of you will know held our magazine portfolio at RhED for over 2 years and was responsible for several amazing publications.

Stina Boro She/her Pathways Co-ordinator On the flip side, with the departure of Katie came Emma in December 2021 who has hit the ground running and has taken over the magazine portfolio and who has put together this magazine in just a few short months! A huge welcome to you Emma!!!

It is with great sadness that we farewelled our Pathways Coordinator Alex in December 2021.

Alex was a tremendous support for staff and clients alike during the pandemic and she will be sorely missed. Alex is stepping back in to the therapeutic space as a couple’s counsellor and sex therapist in her new role and we wish her well on her new endeavours. Meanwhile, Stina from the Pathways team has stepped up and is currently supporting the program in an acting capacity. Stina has worked as a case manager for RhED for the last two years and is looking forward to continue to support our clients and the community in a new capacity.

Here at RhED we are so excited to finally be able to, safely, connect with community face to face again, and it was with great joy that we attended Pride and Midsumma events this summer. RhED and Star Health had a presence both at Midsumma Carnival and in the Pride parade, and we thank our friends at Midsumma for putting on such fantastic events.

We look forward to continuing to run online peer workshop for sex workers this year as well as other opportunities that may be available to us as a result of the decriminalisation bill passing.

Our sex work advisory committee continues to meet quarterly and we remain indebted to have been provided with these opportunities to improve our work and ensure that diverse lived experience voices are captured in all the work that we do. A big thank you must be extended to this committee for all that you continue to bring to us in terms of improving our work with community.

Pippin P p p in the pp ip Stripping Stripping Cripple They y/ /them/he/him Queer, genderfuck, cryptid Brothel based FSSW From The North, England Tell me a bit about your entry point into the industry.

My entry point was basically being broke. At the time I worked four days a week in a theatre company that pays their disabled workers mere dollars an hour for most of the year. No one can pay rent on that, and I couldn’t ask for a raise as the rate was set. So fucking people it was.

What types of sex work have you done since you started in the industry?

I initially tried to do online work, before learning I am not cut out for social media advertising. Too much hustling for me. I also had a brief job at an escorting agency, until one of the clients complained about something (probably me not doing freebies) so I was fired. I’ve done privates on and off, but the admin and constant “on-call” nature of it wore me down. I like being able to go to work, do a few jobs and then leave it all behind when I go home. Clients aren’t known for their reading comprehension, so “don’t phone me, only text” goes ignored most of the time and you get calls at 3am. Plus, being at a brothel you get the community. You feel the love. It’s a delight to meet other workers. There is something magical about a room full of half naked people who you know you can rely on.

What did you draw on for inspiration for the RED magazine cover art?

I’ve always been attracted to demons, to monsters, the outcasts and the reviled. Baphomet is an old creature full of what the majority consider contradictions. They are male and female, good and evil, inhuman and human. Baphomet does not exist on a binary and neither do we.

Being a sex worker, being trans and queer, being disabled, being mentally ill, being working class - I feel all those things. I exist in opposition to myself. I am both revered by society as an inspiration and hated for not being the perfect innocent cripple. I am feminine enough to market myself as desirable and masculine enough to be considered threatening to my cishet peers/coworkers.

I wanted to include the writing on the arms of Baphomet, but didn’t connect with the original phrase (the Latin words SOLVE dissolve and COAGULA coagulate). So I wrote “Revolting Prostitutes” a reference to the UK sex workers rights movement and book of the same name by Juno Mac and Molly Smith.

You mentioned being disabled (can I say disabled instead of 'living with a disability?' I am unsure of language here), what do you wish the sex work community knew about working with a disability?

Personally I prefer identity first language, so I say “disabled” instead of “has a disability”. I wouldn’t call myself a “person with shortness” I’d say “I’m short.” The former just sounds clunky. Disabled is just a word, it’s a neutral descriptor. Especially the term “autistic”. I don’t “live with autism”. It’s not a housemate, it’s part of me and my identity.

Within our community there is such a big emphasis on hustle. On working every day, on GirlBoss culture. I find it incredible and also terrifying how even highly marginalised people can be unwaveringly supportive of late stage capitalism and the harm it causes. I can work two days a week, tops. The idea that if you’re not working to your limits you are “not trying hard enough” has to go. We shouldn’t need to push ourselves to breaking point to survive, or even to thrive.

How do you think the community could be more inclusive of disabled sex workers?

The main thing is just to listen to your disabled peers. There are a lot more of us than you think.

Sex work is a very common career for disabled people because of the flexibility. We can work our own hours, take sick days easily, and usually work less hours than a nine to five job. Plus, the ability to tell clients to fuck off if they are being rude is not something most industries have.

How do you feel about media representation of sex workers with disabilities?

What media representation??

There is representation of disabled clients of sex workers, but I am yet to see any mainstream representation of disabled people or sex workers, never mind disabled sex workers.

This service is part of a Victorian government initiative to increase sexual health services across Melbourne. All GP Partners are being supported by Melbourne Sexual Health Centre. Melbourne Sexual Health Centre is internationally recognised as a leader in sexual health care and research.

Over the next five years as more people began understanding the new legislation, it became obvious that law reform was needed. Street sex work remained illegal, working from home remained illegal and the laws that they thought would enable two workers to open their own brothel were so crazily mixed up in legislation making it near to impossible to open an exempt brothel (two-person brothel).

It’s a good time to be a sex worker.

The laws are changing, community attitudes will follow – it will now be up to us how we choose to work, and choose, if we wish, to challenge community perceptions whether it be family, friends, financial institutions, eg banks.

As I sat in Parliament on Thursday 9 February, 2022 listening to the passionate debate about whether sex work should be decriminalised, it felt alive with the possibility of real progress.

As early as the 1980’s, the Prostitutes Collective of Victoria (PCV) was at the cutting edge of law reform and advocacy for sex worker rights.

Fiona Patten in her speech, remembered sitting in the PCV in the 1980s talking about decriminalisation and now some 30+ years later, she was a member of Parliament commending a bill to the house to do just that.

When I joined PCV in 1995, I worked as a volunteer in the street outreach program. The Prostitution Control Act 1994 had just been enacted and whilst street sex work remained illegal, other parts were heavily controlled for that is what the legislation was about, control.

Providing outreach supplies to street based sex workers only served to encourage the debates at PCV. Politicians had decided that if they regulated sex work then street sex workers could and would work in brothels or escort settings. This showed a woeful disconnect between people who made legislation and people who did the work. The laws were broken, and the job was not over.

In 1997 I became a PCV employee and did outreach in brothel and escort settings. The laws controlled where sex work could be done, with brothels being in industrial areas and escorts required to visit clients at home, a clear message of restricting sex workers to places well away from the public eye.

An exempt brothel is where two workers obtain premises for the purpose of doing sex work themselves, requiring a council permit and a licence (no fee) from the Business Licensing Authority. These were difficult to obtain due to bureaucracy and moral objections.

It wasn't until 1999 that the first exempt brothel was opened. On this occasion, the sex worker managed to obtain premises and introduced herself to the surrounding businesses. She educated and informed them that working for oneself in a brothel was legal and that it wouldn't impact their businesses. The timing was perfect as it was around the December/January period, a quieter time that allowed the council permit to proceed without objection. This is one of the few times, that a sex worker obtained an exempt brothel licence from scratch with their own premises.

In 2001, the PCV structure changed resulting in becoming a program of Star Health, and the name changed to RhED (Resourcing health and education in the sex industry). The advocacy continued.

There had been ongoing amendments and changes to the legislation. For me the significant changes were: • 2010 – the Prostitution Control Act 1994 becomes The Sex Work Act 1994 • 2012 – the recommended frequency of STI screening for sex workers changed from monthly to every three months (quarterly).

RhED does not endorse this form of mandatory testing. STI testing frequency should not be regarded as a crime. However, this change reflected the evidence that sex workers have lower rates of STIs than the general community.

At this time, there had international evidence to decriminalisation of sex work.

Respected British medical journal, The Lancet (2014), published a series of papers that investigated the complex issues faced by sex workers worldwide and called for the full decriminalisation of sex work, in the global effort to tackle the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

This encouraged RhED to launch its decriminalisation campaign at Trades Hall in 2015, in conjunction with Red Umbrella Day, the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

Speeches by sex workers, Jane Green (Vixen), Martin Foley MP (Labor) and Fiona Patten (Reason Party, then known as The Sex Party) launched the campaign to underscore the issues sex workers face when forced to operate without any of the labour or human rights protections granted to other workers.

Following this, in May 2016, Amnesty International's decision-making forum (May 2016) recommended that the organisation “develop a policy that supports the full decriminalisation of all aspects of consensual sex work.

It seemed an alignment of stars was coming together from all parts of the world.

In 2016, that two sex workers approached RhED about the possibility of working with the community and developing an art project. This project was fully supported by RhED. Over the two years of meeting and developing art, the discussion turned to using this as an opportunity to speak publicly about the impact of the laws.

The exhibition, The Sex Worker, opened on 3 March 2018, marking International Sex Worker Rights Day. It was attended by the sex industry and supporters including members of Parliament who were beginning to become interested in the debate.

SEXPO 2016 was held in Melbourne. RhED used this opportunity to gather evidence of community opinion and knowledge of sex work and the related laws.

RhED wanted to explore people’s understanding of the complex sex work legislation in Victoria.

The evidence was clear that the majority of people thought that all sex work should be decriminalised. Full results of the survey are available from RhED.

Continuing the advocacy, in 2017 RhED undertook a literature review which focused on key relevant texts in Victoria, and abroad. RhED management met with key stakeholders to advocate for law change. Arguments were developed from data and evidence preparing to explain, defend and justify law reform.

RhED’s volunteers ran meetings with sex workers across the different sectors, seeking information on what they would like decriminalisation to look like. There were many differing views but all agreed that the legislation was outdated and not useful to workers in the industry.

The lobbying continued meeting with members of Parliament, policy advisers and in late 2019, the Victorian Labor party announced that Fiona Patten (Reason Party) would commence a review into sex work in early 2020.

Sitting in Parliament that Thursday together with sex workers and supporters, felt very special. And now it’s going to be enshrined!

You’ll read more in RED and elsewhere in the coming months about how it will be enshrined in law and that the laws will ensure sex workers have the same protections and recognition as any other worker in the state.

Some people are anxious about change, but this is about giving people options. For example, some may choose to work in a brothel with a liquor licence, others may not.

RhED will continue to work with the government and key stakeholders to ensure that reforms are applied in the best way possible.

Now, thanks to sex workers, supporters of sex workers, Fiona Patten, all those in government who supported the Bill, and to the advocacy programs, RhED, Sex Work Law Reform Victoria, Scarlet Alliance and the Vixen Collective, we have a framework that will deliver a safer workplace and challenge the stigma and discrimination associated with the occupation of sex work.

It is the wisdom and the strength of all in the sex industry that has brought about change.

Street-Based S r ee e a s ed Sex Stttr ett -Ba as Worker Work ker Services Services In light of street-based sex work finally being recognised as work, and soon to be decriminalised by the Victorian Government this year (keeping in mind there will be a clause in the new legislation, setting out where and when street sex work can occur), it is important to let people know about the services and supports available to them, as well as safe spaces where sex worker’s voices can be heard.

RhED provides two specific street-based sex work services; Hustling 2 Health (H2H) Late Night Street Outreach Both programs have been running for a collective period of over 25 years.

In 2019, H2H relocated from 10 Inkerman Street St Kilda, to its current site at 31 Grey Street, St Kilda. The location may have changed but the service provision and the spirit of the group remain the same. H2H operates every Friday evening from 5.30pm to 10pm, and offers a drop-in style support group, where street-based sex workers can connect, share information, and feel a sense of community.

Dinner and refreshments are always provided, and people can access toilet and shower facilities. The H2H staff offer a variety of support including referrals to legal assistance, case management, sexual health and allied health services. There is support with making an Ugly Mugs report, or use of an Early Evidence Kit, the provision of safer sex supplies, sterile injecting equipment, and naloxone. More recently there has been access to Covid testing, vaccinations, rapid antigen tests, and masks. All the services are open to current and former sex workers and all genders are welcome.

The Late Night Street Outreach program runs every Monday and Friday night from 5.30pm to 10pm. Look out for the RhED staff driving a marked Star Health car, carrying a large range of safer sex supplies and RhED resources.

The street outreach team will always have snacks and drinks and during the colder months will carry hand knitted woollen blankets, mittens and scarves.

Firstly, I acknowledge that I work and live on stolen lands. I acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. I pay my respects to Wurundjeri Elders, of the past, present and future.

I also respect and recognise the lives of Indigenous sex workers past and present and the added dimensions of stigma and discrimination they experience at work in this colonial state, from both clients and other workers.

This story is about what the backroom means to me. It is mainly based on my experiences in brothels in Melbourne and Sydney over the past 5 years…

I have white settler ancestry, I'm queer, in my mid 30s, am cis femme presenting and use she pronouns in out of work drag but lean more towards gender queer internal feelings.

I’ve worked in the sex industry in some capacity for the past 10 years and my life is an ongoing journey to find mental wellness in a world that has often felt unsafe to me and that further stigmatises me as a sex worker. All aspects of my identity are relevant to how I experience sex work and spaces such as the backroom and I do not seek to speak for anyone but myself in this story telling.

So one of the many things I love about my job is the backroom. Some of you will be able to picture the random assortment of backrooms you’ve spent time in. For those who haven’t seen one, imagine a room behind the scenes at a brothel or sex on premises venue (sometimes at the back of the building or just referred to as “back” room even if it’s not). It could be one single room or a series of rooms, just some kind of intentional space set aside for workers. It usually has some couches or chairs that are hopefully comfy enough to spend all night sitting on, a little kitchen area with fridge and microwave to reheat food you brought from home, a sink full of dirty dishes and a kettle for essential tea and coffee making. It's definitely an attached smokers area, or there's one somewhere else in the house.

There will usually be a television screen live streaming the front door so you can see clients as they enter, some mirrors and makeup areas with beauty and hair products strewn everywhere, a trail of discarded stilettos that are donned for intros as well as a box of free shoes that will only ever get used in an emergency. There’s also a few stray wigs left lying around while people give their head some air, and a bunch of lockers holding too many old outfits that never get worn (some locked full of supplies and secrets left behind years ago)…

So the backroom is a real place, but is also a conceptual, magical place that only exists through the interactions and connections of sex workers at any one point in time. It’s always different. Of course, everyone’s experience of backrooms is different, in different workplaces, at different times and even at the exact same time we all experience them differently. I’m not saying they are perfect or safe spaces, or pretending there aren't times when workers are whorephobic or racist or transphobic or in other ways harmful towards other workers or clients. But for this story, I’m going to focus on mainly on the positives I have experienced.

What's special is it's our space. In the foyer, the intro rooms, and the working rooms of the house, we share and navigate space with our clients all night. But the backroom is just for us. All the workers on shift on that day or night, coming and going in whatever chosen sexy work outfit, lazing around in our dressing gowns if it’s cold (it’s almost always cold when you are half naked!), eating snacks or dinner that’s been delivered, chatting about work or life, watching telly to tune out, or sometimes even studying. We don’t have to be switched on in the same way as we do in the other rooms of the house. Hopefully, we don’t have to do too much emotional labour in that space. We can relax somewhat, regroup and replenish our energies to keep up the work pace, and sometimes just have a little fun together.

Our workplaces don’t have formal “training” or “debriefing” processes, but the backroom can end up providing that and more through the generosity of the workers on shift.

Collectively we end up offering advice to newer workers, debriefing after bookings, keeping each other motivated, and sharing ways to make our jobs less emotionally draining. In bookings, we usually work alone, but so many things I’ve heard in the backroom have helped me work smarter and safer. Things like 'always wear a standout colour so clients can remember you,' and tips on boundary setting that helped me realise if I'm gently in charge from the outset it's easier for me to be assertive.

A collection of sex workers is truly a fountain of knowledge and experience. Need help or advice on something? Just ask the backroom! (I even asked the backroom for input in this section so shout-out to everyone who shared with me).

We discuss useful ways to take care of our bodies and our mental health, how to combat burnout, and pass on resources for work-friendly services.

We talk about options for other work or study, offer advice on money management, paying tax, and other ways of preparing for the future. We talk about the political nature of our lives and work. I've learnt so much from just listening. We get educated, entertained and held by so many little interactions in the backroom.

I've also learnt so much about myself. I found that being more open to making connections with people at work made my life in the industry (and in general!) so much more sustainable and enjoyable. I realised that connecting in the backroom usually gives me energy to keep going, rather than draining me. I've also learnt how to manage being around lots of people and navigate challenges that might come up by internally or verbally making boundaries. There are no completely shared values or politics, but almost always there’s enough kindness to go around and most of the time, for me, that’s enough. I love that at work people truly mean it when they ask how you are or compliment your new hair colour or outfit. I feel accepted and appreciated as a person by other workers in ways that I don’t ever experience in the outside world and that has been really impactful for my sense of self and my overall wellness.

I think it's a sense of belonging.

There's so much affection and care in the backroom. It doesn’t mean it’s perfect or that you owe anyone unconditional love, but it’s a special place and I missed it so much over the last couple of years during Melbourne lockdowns. In 2020 and 2021 we were closed for almost twelve months altogether which is something so unheard of in a workplace that is usually open 24 hours, 7 days a week! Of course it has been some of the hardest years we have collectively experienced as a society. Sex worker communities have been hit really hard, especially folks who had no access to other income, savings or resources, who might have had to continue working and risk fines and further criminalisation. As well as many compounding issues like visa status, not having access to benefits, existing health conditions, having covid, worsening mental health, long periods of isolation and too many things to name here in this short piece.

Personally, I have found every time I returned to work in the last couple of years to be so nourishing! Despite some anxieties about the virus and our workplace running very differently (masks, new cleaning practices, less room sharing and the backroom sometimes being off-bounds), I have loved seeing all the people I missed and care about, catching up with everyone, meeting new folks, and all of us being able to make that money again. I have felt so inspired by the strength of sex workers surrounding me and lucky to be in the generosity and chaos and hilarity of the backroom again.

--I just want to say thank you to all the workers that I’ve shared backrooms with. To people that I'll probably never meet again, to the people I see every week and those I get to see every now and then. Thank you for sharing space with me. I’ve grown up as a person and as a worker because of you, I learnt how to take care of myself and how to connect from my years around all of you and I’m so grateful and honoured.

SHE/HER QUEER STRIPPER ARTIST I sat down with Valerie Miller (aka Harley & Händen), a queer sex worker to chat about all things industry; from work personas, to whorephobia, to sex worker art, and Instagram.

As well as a sex worker, Valerie is also a graphic designer, multidisciplinary artist, and the Creative Director of TØS Journal which is a journal of sex worker culture.

Tell me about your entry experience in the industry.

I flirted with the idea of stripping for about a year before I finally took the plunge. I remember swapping a Bob Dylan book for Jenna Jameson’s ‘How To Make Love Like A Porn Star’ with a civvie co-worker and fell in love with it all, but felt I didn’t have the confidence to start. I wrongly assumed that all the girls working in the club would be makeup artists, would be scary and bitchy, and had mastered the art of walking in heels, and that I would walk in there looking like bambi with horrendous makeup. Mind you I did only learn about contouring maybe when I was like a year deep haha. I continued to meet heaps of lovely sworkers through art exhibitions and the majority encouraged me to audition to start at one specific club. I matched with a girl on Tinder that said she worked at that club and she agreed to work with me on my trial shift! I remember this part of that night so vividly, I had a tipper around the stage that found out it was my first night and was trying to intimidate me by saying things like “Oh are you nervous?”

At that club, on stage it was $5 to get your top off and another $5 to get naked, however I hadn’t quite grasped the whole thing yet, so when he gave me the $5 note I took my Best & Less, high waisted, white lace BRIEFS off and paraded around the stage with my bra on.

What a sight.

What does a typical week look like for you?

I try to work three nights a week at the club, so usually Thursday to Saturday. I also have a design client who is a dance teacher in Queensland, so I work around fifteen hours a week on that. Then I will either have photos to edit or an exhibition to make art for. I also try to work out and also catch up with my friends.

What do you think makes sex workers and the sex work community special?

I think our brains are just wired differently. I have never worked full-time, but I had a parttime job and I just couldn’t stay focussed, but I have ADHD. I think it’s also the flexible hours, you never have the same shift, and it’s always exciting to think about how much you might make and who you might meet. I’ve found so many of us also have side hustles, or are studying, or are mothers, or are creatives as well, so being able to make enough money over 2-3 shifts and having the rest of the week to focus on the things we love is so enticing.

Being a sex worker is such a binding thing it’s like, “Oh you’re in sex work? We’ve been through some shit together, you’ve been through some shit, yeah yep, we understand each other.” Also we have similar interests; we like money, we like having heaps of time off.

The industry is so diverse, but we have all had similar events that have happened at work.

What did you miss most about the community during the shutdown of clubs during covid-19 restrictions and how did you stay connected?

I missed working and seeing everyone obviously but apart from that not being able to go out and have a nice lunch was something I couldn’t wait to get back to, or even a picnic in the park with my girls. We did lots of Facetime calls to make up for that, and I joined in for The Glory Hole (now known as The Intro Room). I subscribed to heaps of sex workers’ OnlyFans accounts which was really fun, and it felt nice to support them during that time. I also spent time making more Instagram friends within our community.

I feel like having the link to the sex industry gives me more of a backing if I use pictures from playboy or horny nude themes, however I’ve toned it down because two years ago my Instagram account was taken down. My art was really too much nudity for Instagram, so I think I’ve just been trying to experiment with different things since then and trying to not be too horny on the internet. I think it was only two months ago that I posted my first artwork that didn’t need to be censored in any way and I was like “this is so weird I can show the process without having to go and edit it and blur out all the titties before I put it to Instagram.”

How do you think the sex work community could grow?

I think that continuing the way that we are going is a great start. Events like The Intro Room are an incredible way to share our stories, and my friend is currently organising a sex worker only comedy week which I am so excited for. Not to toot TØS’ horn but being able to amplify and highlight people’s talents that may usually get looked over in other magazine’s curation process has been extremely rewarding, especially during a pandemic where most lost their income, so that was great to be able to pay them for doing what they love. We also have Sex Worker Diaries, with Season 2 on it’s way which has been beneficial to both workers and also civvies that have listened and have been better able to understand our struggles and what makes a good customer.

Do you have any other reflections on sex work?

I remember seeing this quote by @feministstripper; “Sex work doesn’t have to be empowering to be a justifiable livelihood.” That’s when my understanding of stigma really set in.

I’m kind of sick of seeing the white narrative of strippers who live this luxury life being glamorised on TikTok etc. I remember when I first started dancing, I did a couple of Q&As and I felt that I needed to say that I was empowered. I didn’t even really understand what that meant, but so many other people were saying it so I thought, “I guess I could be empowered, maybe I could say that.”

But it’s also like, damn, some people don’t even get close to being empowered, it’s survival.

The Whorearchy Victoria Queer Brothel-Based FSSW

The sex work community is an overwhelmingly diverse and heterogenous group. We come from many cultures, experienced dissimilar upbringings, are different genders and sexualities, and have an infinite collection of skills and hobbies. I would argue that no two sex workers are the same. Yet we are united by many common phenomena and experiences, one of them being the whorearchy.

If you’re lucky enough to be unacquainted with the whorearchy, it's the idea that different types of sex work are not equal. The whorearchy states that some forms of sex work are better and more socially acceptable than others, which isn't useful for any of us.

When you think about it, it isn’t just the whorearchy that reinforces these lies… It’s us.

We were complicit in creating this useless structure, and we continue to perpetuate it.

I think understanding where the whorearchy originates from is a good start. The whorearchy is how our community experiences lateral violence.

Lateral violence is a term used to describe the peer-on-peer violence that occurs within marginalized groups. Grounded in oppressed groups theory, lateral violence is experienced by many communities such as Indigenous cultures, LGBTQIA+ communities, and is frequently cited in nursing literature.

Where someone sits on the whorearchy is usually dependent on how physically intimate they are with their clients and their proximity to police. Often sugar babies, dominatrices, and maybe online content creators are at the top, strippers and ‘high class’ escorts are toward the middle, and other types of fullservice sex workers are at the bottom. Most sex workers would agree that the whorearchy exists however during my time in the industry, I’ve not heard much said about what we should do about it.

Lateral violence is often understood as misdirected anger that targets other group members rather than the oppressive structures around them. It is thought this anger arises when outside groups and oppressors control harmful narratives about a group, leading community members to internalize these narratives. For us, these narratives often target our ‘self-worth,’ which is pretty ironic given we are getting paid.

We turn this valuation of self-worth by outsiders into a hierarchical structure of acceptability. But what purpose does this serve?

When you belong to a marginalised community, fighting against the large oppressive systems that push against you can feel overwhelming, so it is common for group members to turn against each other. You might not be able to change the way the broader community sees you, so instead you work to place yourself above others in your community. If people are going to have a negative opinion about your ‘group’ well at least you’re one of the better ones right?

It is a clever individual survival strategy (whether people realise what they are doing or not), however it serves to preserve the harmful narratives that the outside groups create. These are often based in misogynist values and conservative views on gender and work. We all agree that all sex work is legitimate work, whatever form it takes and whoever it is performed by. If we work to reject the whorearchy, we are actively challenging and changing oppressive social structures.

Maggie McNeill wrote in her 2012 piece on the whorearchy that she is ‘harshly unsympathetic to those who vehemently maintain that their species of sex work or sensual therapy is absolutely not prostitution: all they’re doing is throwing other women under the bus, and if we had all stuck together from the beginning of second-wave feminism half a century ago, prostitution would’ve been decriminalized long ago and many women who are now dead or damaged might still be alive and healthy.’ While quite a damning criticism, it highlights that the impacts of our actions reach far beyond what we might initially consider.

Harmful behaviour born from the whorearchy is always damaging to the whole community, whatever you want to term it. While trying to place ourselves above other members of our community might make us feel more comfortable with our own identity, it only serves to perpetuate harmful community stereotypes while supporting archaic beliefs about sex and gender.

Having knowledge about why we might feel the need to separate ourselves from other workers in our community is useful in being able to change our own, or challenge others’, behaviour. Understanding that the origins of lateral violence are not hatred of our fellow sex workers, but falsehoods we were taught about sex, gender, respectability and self-worth, helps us identify stigma and harmful narratives from broader society and allow us to improve our community from a place of empathy and compassion.

So what should we do?

First and foremost, we can stop bringing down other sex workers and we can practice celebrating different types of sex work. This doesn’t mean you have to like all your colleagues, or that you can’t disagree with people in the industry, however you don’t need to talk negatively about other sex workers for the sake of dampening the stigma you’re experiencing. Stigma against any part of our community impacts all of us.

Secondly, call out lateral violence when you hear it and help educate the community. You can call it out or call it in. Calling it out involves a public criticism of another sex worker’s harmful words, while calling it in involves taking them aside after the fact and explaining their mistake, including why it was harmful. Both are helpful in educating the community about how and why we sometimes speak negatively about each other Thirdly, challenge the false narratives you hear about any kind of sex worker. Every time you hear someone peddle a harmful stereotype about any type of sex work, push back. The less stigma that exists both inside and outside the community, the less some workers will feel the need to separate themselves and their work from other types of sex work.

Lastly, adopt a new paradigm for how sex workers relate to each other, but make it something that celebrates difference in a non-hierarchical way. The more united we are as a community, the less power others have in deciding our narratives for us. If those outside the circle see us having nothing but love and support for each other, they will be disempowered from perpetuating stigma and harmful stereotypes.

Decriminalisation FAQs What is the Sex Work Decriminalisation Act 2022?

After decades of community action, the Victorian Parliament passed the Sex Work Decriminalisation Bill 2021 on the 22nd of February 2022. This is the first step towards full decriminalisation of sex work in Victoria. This Bill has become the Sex Work Decriminalisation Act 2022 (the Act) which aims to recognise sex work as real work, and regulate sex work in the same way as other industries. Some of the implementation issues are currently being confirmed so we do not currently have a complete picture of what decriminalisation will look like, however below you’ll find our current best answers to some common questions. We will continue to keep the community updated as we get more information from government bodies.

But isn’t sex work already decriminalised?

No. It can be confusing, but other than street-based sex work, sex work was already legal in Victoria however some of it was still regulated by criminal law and therefore criminalised (e.g. it is legal to work in a brothel, but a criminal offense to do so while you have an STI).

Is it still illegal to do street-based sex work?

Street-based sex work will finally be legal, as it should always have been! There are however some limitations regarding when and where people can work. Between 6am and 7pm, and at all times on prescribed days, streetbased sex workers will not be able to work near places of worship and schools. Due to this restriction, RhED and many other sex worker organisations believe full decriminalisation has not been achieved. We will continue to advocate for full decriminalisation so that all sex workers are afforded the same rights.

When will the changes come into effect?

Stage one of the Acts reforms will come into effect on the 10 May 2022. Stage one changes include: Sex workers will no longer be required by legislation to attend STI screening every 3 months and provide certificates to their workplace.

Private sex workers will no longer have to register with the Business Licencing Authority and obtain an SWA number.

Services can be described in advertisements.

Full body images can be posted in advertisements, however sex workers might be subject to other strict legal controls regarding this.

Sex work advertisements can be broadcast or televised (at the discretion of relevant broadcasting company and federal codes and laws).

Stage two of the reforms will come into effect in December 2023. These changes include: Sex Work Act (1994) will be completely repealed.

Changes to planning permit requirements to sex work businesses Private sex workers will be able to work from home and provide incalls subject to planning thresholds.

If a private worker wishes to work from home with three or more other workers, they will be able to do so once they have applied for a council permit like other home businesses such as hairdressers Repeal of specific brothel and escort agency provisions in the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008.

Can I work from my home?

The second stage of the law reform, which will commence in December 2023 will mean that working from your own home will no longer be captured by the definition of a ‘brothel’. This will legally allow workers to see clients from their own home given they meet planning requirements. If the worker wishes to work from home with three or more other workers, they will be able to apply for a permit from their council. Why? Because sex work is now being categorised in a similar way to other businesses and private sex workers wanting to work from home will have the same requirements as other home based businesses. This information will be held by the local council and will be available on council websites for anyone to search. The listing will NOT disclose what kind of business you are running from home.

Am I allowed to do non-home-based incalls?

For sex workers who enjoy working from the comfort of rented apartments or hotels that you’ve booked (as opposed to your client), you no longer need to do so with the worry that you’re operating outside of the law.

While it might technically be legal to book hotels to work from as of December 2023, it is important to be aware the stigma and discrimination sex workers have historically faced at some hotels might still be there. If this happens, RhED are keen to help with support and advocacy as this is discrimination and is unacceptable/illegal. To support sex workers in working under decriminalisation, the Act includes an amendment of the antidiscrimination act which will safeguard current and former sex workers again unlawful discrimination. Can I work from a rented apartment with other sex workers?

Yes, from December 2023, however if you are working with three or more other workers you will require a council permit as mentioned above, and will need to ensure you are complying with any conditions on your lease.

Can I advertise my services online now?

Yes! This comes under the first stage of reform commencing this 10 May 2022. Previously Victorian sex workers were not allowed to include specific details of the services they provided. Anyone who has worked privately will know this was incredibly frustrating and meant many back and forth texts with potential clients. Sex workers will be able to describe services in detail from the outset which allows for clear boundaries, less haggling, and less admin work!

Do I still need an SWA to work privately?

No. In great news, the SWA licensing system, which required all private workers to register their real name and address, has been abolished so you will no longer need to register to work privately as of 10 May 2022, however you will need to comply with other exempt small owner operator requirements. The historic register is also being destroyed which means all past records of sex workers who had SWA numbers will disappear!

Why is mandatory testing being dropped?

The current system of three-monthly mandatory testing did not work and was an unnecessarily controlling measure over sex workers’ health. Sex workers will continue to take care of their own health without having to be forced to do so by law. To support the health and wellbeing of sex workers, there will be peer-led education and support programs as well as improved access to health care and sexual health testing that are free from stigma and discrimination.

Won’t STI rates increase if we don’t have to get tested every 3 months?

Prior to mandatory testing being adopted in Victoria, sex workers successfully took responsibility for their health, and there is no reason to think that workers won’t continue to do so once testing is no longer mandated. NSW decriminalised sex work in 1995, and sex workers have been found to have an STI prevalence rate that is at least as low as the general population. Sex workers are still welcomed and encouraged to have sexual health check-ups as often as they would like, be it 3 months or at another frequency. Sex workers know how to look after themselves better than anyone else. Sex workers are safer sex professionals, and the removal of mandatory testing will allow sex workers more bodily autonomy over when they need to get tested in accordance with particular risk activities. Once the Sex Work Act 1994 is repealed, the sex industry will be assisted by new public health and infection control guidance, which focuses on health promotion and harm reduction.

What do the licencing changes mean for brothels?

Licenses will no longer be required to run a brothel. It is too early to tell yet, but we expect this might mean more brothels popping up closer to residential areas which will increase visibility and make work options more diverse.

Having more options around where to work will mean a broader choice of workplaces that align with your values and operate in a way that works for you. Brothels will continue to be regulated by agencies such as WorkSafe in line with other industries to ensure a safe working environment for all. It is your right to feel safe and respected in the workplace.

Will alcohol be sold in brothels?

If you are the kind of person who enjoys a glass of bubbly post coitus, you're in luck! The passing of the Act means that brothel owners will be able to apply to serve alcohol on premises. This does not necessarily mean all brothels will serve alcohol, just those that decide it is something they would like to offer at their business. Brothels will have to apply for liquor licences as any other business serving alcohol would have to.

Isn’t this dangerous?

As you probably know, many clients attend brothels at varying levels of intoxication already. Under liquor licencing laws, it is illegal to serve someone more alcohol if they are already visibly intoxicated. Brothels will be required to operate under these laws if they are serving alcohol. Brothels will be aware of the dangers of having heavily intoxicated people (both clients and workers) in their business and will seek to minimise risk in this area.

With brothel work you have this community of women who are physically there in the space with you, and there is kind of an accelerated intimacy that comes with sex work because you know the deepest parts of each other. And also you often know about each other’s lives in ways that no one else knows because you’re working with so many women who are closeted whose partners and children and families don’t know they work. So you really do, you have each other’s back. Of course that’s not to say there are no issues in the sex work community, there is, as there are in any communities but I have had overall extremely positive experiences with the sex worker community, and I really really appreciate being able to work in a workspace that’s mainly women.

Pride March

2022 rhiannon She/her rhed team member & former stripper As a 26-year-old lesbian, the fact that my first ever Pride event was amidst a pandemic in a work capacity could be deemed a disgraced. Or I could consider myself lucky to work for a queer enveloped team at RhED, based at the southern hemisphere’s largest Rainbow devoted hub (The Victorian Pride Centre). I’m going to stick with lucky; lucky that I am encouraged to be proud of every aspect of diversity I bring to the RhED program, lucky that being queer is so closely aligned with sex work and that the intersectionality is overwhelmingly apparent.

Marching down St Kilda’s Fitzroy street in perfect 28-degree temperature, hair blowing in the ambient southern breeze, I felt like a celebrity as I donned the RhED banner.

The enthusiastic and appreciative cheers of the public only amplified after the 5 seconds it took for them to the read “supporting & advocating for full decriminalisation of the sex industry”. Such a simple and obvious indication that sex work and the LGBTQIA+ community are in it together. Although, to the valued allies in the crowd, that connection may not be as blatant, there appeared to be a silent understanding that sex workers and queer folk share the same trials, tribulations and barriers when seeking societal acceptance, albeit within a different lens.

The amazing thing about being afforded the privilege to participate in the 2022 Pride March as one of many RhED representatives, is that within the Rainbow community, the persecution sex workers are so accustomed to experiencing felt muted. Our RhED crew consisted of people of many different ages, different genders and sexual identities, different abilities and different cultures, yet the support we showed the Rainbow community for that 1.2 kilometres was returned two-fold as what felt like mutual appreciation for the sex industry.

I think there is infinite value as a member of RhED in attending the Pride March, or really any community event, to allow our visibility to be as permanent as we know sex work is within Victoria. Representing the sex work community in any way, shape or form presents the opportunity to allow for our voices and mere existence to be one of value and durability through the often-persevering stigmatisation the industry faces. Many sex workers, both past and present, may not be afforded the opportunity to represent their community at public engagements such as Pride, for fear of familial, employment or social backlash. I see it as RhED’s duty to be a voice for the thousands that feel silenced.

If on that sunny afternoon, at least one person in the crowd saw the RhED banner flying high and felt represented and supported within both the sex work and rainbow communities, then i can safely say our attendance was immeasurably valuable.

I was drawn to the beauty of darkness which probably had a massive part to play with my introduction to BDSM and fetish. I held a passion for the resemblance between gothic fashion and the aesthetic of BDSM/ nightclub wear, which opened the doors for me into the wonderful world of kink.

I began filming my rituals of binding my legs together underwater, as a way to embody the siren figure. Low-fi mermaid tails made of rope and fishnet stockings were much inspired from bondage and Shibari. It was a perfect environment, the water buoyancy from high salt levels meant I was able to float and explore safely on my own. This opened my eyes to the underwater world of Aquaphilia. Terminology such as: wet look, breath holding, apnea and even scuba masks became majorly popular in my vocabulary. I uncovered incredibly specific niches which resonated so much with my inner dialogue, I ended up accepting it was just part of who I was too. And suddenly my slogan “De-sexualise to re-fetishise”became “De-stigmatise to re-fetishise.”

Where I am as an artist now began with a lot of inner workings and self reflection. I rediscovered my dream journal, years of written dreams which I began to de-code common themes as inspiration. What I began to uncover was incredibly eye-opening. Vivid dreams of swimming pools, breathing underwater, a lifelong love of mermaids, abandoned bathrooms and more specifically kissing girls in swimming pools. These dreams were well before the awakening of my sexuality and gender identity, so I am really grateful to have these documents from myself—to myself to reflect upon. I highly recommend starting a dream journal as a self discovery tool.

My earlier work was also inspired by philosopher Giles Deleuze, specifically writings on Sacher Masoc (sadism/ masochism) and Liquid Perception. Deleuze offered me a deeper understanding of the pleasure and pain complex in my work as a body-horror performance artist.

What I took from his writings was an understanding of de-sexualising in order to refetishise. In relation to performative body-horror genre, to sexualise it boldly is dangerous. "The de-sexualisation operates but is accompanied by a re-sexualisation, which does not in any way cancel out the de-sexualisation as it operates in a new dimension.” These complex philosophical writings basically inspired me to explore my work through the slogan of “De-sexualise to refetishise.”

My newest collection Aquatic Erotic explores Underwater Dance and seduction, and fishnets under fluorescent lighting. The collection can be supported on the NFT marketplace NFTreats Art. I believe NFTs are a massively valuable tool for those in the adult industry, operating on a decentralised system which drastically reduces financial discrimination.

Basically eliminating centralised banking, crypto can also be fairly anonymous. Plus an entirely new approach to the re-selling of creators work. NFTs include a royalty fee, so the creator profits when the work is re-sold. I can’t think of many examples in the industry where we profit off people re-selling our work, so I think it’s very powerful. It can be overwhelming at the beginning but consistent research and a lot of community building can equate to some powerful knowledge which I really encourage.

With my re-ignited love of swimming pools, I totally submerged myself into the world of underwater film, photography and performative ritual, becoming the siren/ mermaid I had always dreamed of. I started to feel like an asexual fish!

At the start of lockdowns, it was near impossible to have access to swimming pools.

So, I gravitated towards sensory deprivation tanks, also known as float pods and more ironically isolation tanks. This environment also offered me the privacy of an uninterrupted hour to explore work I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. One float pod experience had these amazing LED colour changing therapy lights. Of course I was just obsessed with the red-light tones for the dark, seductive siren waiting beneath the surface.

There was a time in my life where I really started to compartmentalise myself as an artist and eventually as a human being. It’s still all a big balancing act of keeping my identity and personal life safe whilst also wanting to authentically share my work which I’m proud of- to a larger audience. I also have to be aware of my various audiences, but to always remind myself foremost; to make the work that I enjoy creating.

如果我们没有每三个月做检测，那性传播感染（STI）的比例是不是会上升？ 在维多利亚州采用强制检测前，性工作者可以对自己的健康负责，强制检测取消后并没有理由认为工作者将不 能继续对自己的健康负责。新南威尔士州在 1995 年非罪化了性工作，并且发现性传播感染（STI）的比例至少 与普通大众的比例一样低。性工作者仍然可以经常接受性健康检测并且我们鼓励他们这么做，他们可以自己选 择每三个月或以其它频率做检测。性工作者比别人更知道如何照顾自己，而且他们是更安全的性专家。取消强 制检测将允许性工作者对自己的身体有更多的自主权，他们将可以决定在进行特定危险活动后是否需要做检测。

《1994 年性工作法》（Sex Work Act 1994） 被废除后，性行业将获得公共卫生和传染控制新指引的协助，这 些新指引关注促进健康和减少伤害的措施。

妓院会出售酒类吗？ 《非罪化法》的通过意味着妓院业主将可以申请在工作场所提供酒类。这并不意味着所有妓院都将提供酒类， 只是说那些想要在企业内提供酒类的业主可以自己考虑。就像其它提供酒类的企业一样，妓院需要申请酒类执 照。

这样做危险吗？ 大家可能已经知道，许多客户来到妓院时已经有不同程度的醉酒表现。根据酒类执照法规，如果已经可见客户 有醉酒表现，再向他们提供更多酒类属于违法行为。妓院如果提供酒类，就必须遵守这些法规。

성매매 비범죄화 (DECRIM) GABBY SKELSEY 호칭 : 여성 RHED 팀 멤버 지금은 성 노동자로 일하기 좋은 시기다 . 법이 바뀌고 있고 , 사회의 태도도 달라질 것이기 때문이 다 . 우리는 일하는 방식을 스스로 선택하게 될 것이고 , 우리가 원한다면 가족이나 친구나 금융기관 ( 예 : 은행 ) 등이 가지고 있는 고정관념에 도전해볼 수도 있다 .

그 후 5 년에 걸쳐 더 많은 사람들이 이 새로운 법의 내용 을 이해하기 시작하면서 , 법 개정의 필요성이 명백해졌 다 . 길거리 성매매는 여전히 불법이었고 , 자택 성매매도 불법이었고 , 성 노동자 두 명이 그들의 성매매 업소를 열 수 있도록 허가하는 법안들은 제정 과정에서 뒤죽박죽이 되는 바람에 면제 성매매 업소를 개장하는 것은 거의 불가 능했다 . 2 인 성매매 업소 면제 성매매 업소는 성 노동자 두 명이 성 노동을 하기 위 한 목적으로 사업장을 확보하는 것을 말하며 , 카운슬 허 가 , 비즈니스 면허당국의면허 ( 무료 ) 가 필요하다 . 그러 나 이것들은 관료주의와 윤리적 거부감 때문에 취득하기 어려웠다 .

이 르 게 는 1980 년 대 부 터 빅 토 리 아 주 성 매 매 협 회 (Prostitutes Collective of Victoria, PCV) 는 법 개정 및 성 노동자의 권리를 옹호하는 데 앞장섰다 .

그러다가 1999 년에 가서야 첫 면제 성매매 업소가 문을 열었다 . 이 경우 , 성 노동자는 사업장을 직접 구했고 주변 사업체들에게 자신을 소개했다 . 그녀는 주변 사업체들에 게 성매매 업소에서 자영업을 하는 것은 합법이라는 것과 다른 사업체에 영향을 주지 않을 것임을 역설했다 . 시기 도 완벽했던 것이 , 그 때가 12 월 /1 월 무렵이라 비교적 조용한 시기여서 카운슬 허가는 반대에 부딪히지 않고 진 행될 수 있었다 . 이것은 성 노동자가 자신의 사업장을 가 지고 처음부터 일을 진행하여 면제 성매매 업소 면허를 취 득하게 된 소수의 경우 중 하나이다 .

피오나 페튼은 연설에서 1980 년대에 PCV 측에 앉아 성 노동 합법화에 대해 이야기하던 것을 기억한다고 했 고 , 30 여년이 지난 지금 , 그녀는 같은 내용의 법안 제 정을 하원에 촉구하는 의원이 되어 있다 .

2001 년 , PCV 구조가 변경되면서 Star Health 의 프로 그램이 되었고 이름은 RhED (Resourcing health and education in the sex industry) 로 바 뀌 었 다 . 변 화 를 위한 활동은 계속되었다 .

내가 1995 년 PCV 에 가입했을 때 , 나는 길거리 아웃 리치 프로그램에서 자원봉사를 하고 있었다 . 성매매 규 제법이 막 발효된 시점이라서 길거리 성매매 행위는 여 전히 불법이었고 해당 법이 규제에 관련된 것이다보니 다른 분야들도 심한 규제를 받고 있었다 .

법안 수정 및 변경 작업도 지속되고 있었다 . 내가 생각하 는 중요 변경사항들은 다음과 같다 :

2022 년 2 월 9 일 내가 의회의사당에 앉아 성매매가 불법화 되어야 하는지에 대한 열정적인 토론을 듣고 있 었을 때 , 나는 진정한 발전이 이루어 질 가능성을 생생 하게 느꼈었다 .

길거리 성매매 노동자들에게 아웃리치 공급품을 제공하 는 일은 PCV 내에서 토론을 활성화시키는 촉매 역할에 그쳤을 뿐이었다 . 그 당시 정치인들은 그들이 성매매를 규제한다면 길거리 성 노동자들이 성매매 업소나 에스 코트 서비스에서 일하게 될 것이라고 믿었다 . 그런 생 각은 법을 만드는 사람들과 해당 노동을 직접 하는 사람 들간의 심각한 괴리감을 보여준 것이었다 . 법은 지켜지 지 않았고 , 문제도 해결되지 않았다 .

1997 년에 나는 PCV 직원이 되어 성매매 업소 및 에스 코트 서비스 환경에서 아웃리치 활동을 했다 . 법은 성 매매가 이루어지는 장소를 규제했고 , 이에 따라 성매매 업소는 공장지역에 위치해야 했고 에스코트 서비스의 경우 고객이 집으로 방문해야 했다 . 이는 성 노동자들 이 대중의 눈에 뜨이지 않는 곳에서 일하도록 제한하겠 다는 명확한 메세지였다 .

• 2010 년 – 성매매 규제법 1994 이 성 노동법 1994 로 변경되었다 .

• 2012 년 – 성 노동자를 위한 STI 선별검사의 권장 빈도 가 매월에서 매 3 개월 (1 년에 4 번 ) 로 변경되었다 .

RhED 은 이러한 형식의 의무 검사를 지지하지 않는다 .

STI 검사 빈도가 범죄로 간주되어서는 안된다 . 그러나 , 이 변화는 성 노동자들의 성병 감염률이 일반 지역사회보 다 낮다는 것을 증명해 주었다 . 이 시점에서 성 매매의 완전한 비범죄화를 지지하는 국제 적 증거자료들이 증가하고 있었다 .

영국의 저명한 의학 저널인 The Lancet(2014) 은 전세 계 성 노동자들이 직면하는 복잡한 문제들을 조사한 논 문들을 게재하였고 , HIV/AIDS 대유행 문제 해결을 위 한 범 세계적인 노력의 과정에서 성매매의 완전한 비범 죄화를 촉구하였다 .

변화를 위한 옹호 활동을 계속하던 RhED 는 2017 년 에 빅토리아 주와 해외의 주요 관련 문헌들에 초점을 맞춘 문헌 리뷰 작업을 실행했다 . RhED 관리부는 주 요 이해 관계자들과 만나 법안 개정을 호소했다 . 데이 터와 증거 자료를 바탕으로 법안 개정을 설명하고 방어 하고 정당화할 수 있는 논점들이 확립되었다 .

이에 힘을 얻은 RhED 는 세계 성 노동자에 대한 폭력 근 절을 위한 날을 기념하여 2015 년 Trades Hall 에서 성 RhED 의 자원봉사자들은 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 성 노동 자들과 미팅을 가지고 그들이 원하는 비범죄화의 형태 매매 비범죄화 캠페인을 출범했다 . 에 대한 정보를 수집했다 . 여러 다양한 의견들이 있었 성 노동자들이 다른 노동자들에게 부여된 노동 및 인권 지만 , 해당 법안은 너무 낡았고 성 산업에 종사하는 성 에 대한 보호 없이 일을 해야 하는 문제를 부각시키기 위 노동자들에게 유용하지 않다는 점에 모두가 동의했다 . 한 이 캠페인은 성 노동자들 , 제인 그린 (Vixen), 마틴 폴리 의원 ( 노동당 ) 및 피오나 패튼 (Reason 당 , 그 의원들 및 정책 조언자들과의 만남을 통해 로비는 계속 되었고 2019 년 하반기에 빅토리아 주 노동당은 피오 당시 섹스당으로 알려짐 ) 의 연설과 함께 출범되었다 . 나 패튼 (Reason 당 ) 이 2020 년 초에 성매매에 대한 그 후 2016 년 5 월 에 국 제 사 면 위 원 회 (Amnesty 검토를 시작할 것이라고 발표했다 .

또 그곳에는 대개 앞문으로 들어오는 고객들을 실시간으로 보여 주는 티비 스크린이 있고 , 거울 몇개 , 화장품과 헤어 제품들이 흩어져 있는 화장대 , 소개할 때 신었던 하이힐들 , 그리고 응급시 에만 사용되는 신발이 들어있는 상자가 있다 . 또 머리카락을 쉬 게 해주기 위해 던져둔 가발들 , 다시 입을 일 없는 너무 오래된 의상들이 잔뜩 들어있는 사물함들이 있다 ( 어떤 사물함은 수년 전에 얻은 이런저런 물건들과 비밀들로 가득하다 ). 이렇게 뒷방은 실제적인 장소이지만 , 어떤 한 순간에 성 노동자 들이 서로 교류하고 연결하는 과정에서만 존재하는 관념적이고 마술같은 장소이기도 하다 . 뒷방은 항상 다르다 . 그리고 물론 다 른 근무지 , 다른 시간에 겪는 뒷방에 대한 경험도 사람마다 모두 다르며 , 같은 시간안에서도 사람들의 경험은 모두 제각각이다 . 나는 뒷방이 완벽하고 안전한 공간이라거나 , 성 노동자 혐오 , 인 종차별 , 트렌스젠더 혐오 또는 기타 다른 해로운 방법으로 다른 성 노동자들이나 고객들을 대하는 사람들이 전혀 없다는 이야기 를 하는 것은 아니다 . 그렇지만 이 이야기를 위해서 나는 내가 경 험한 긍정적인 것들에만 집중하고 싶다 . 뒷방이 특별한 것은 그 곳이 우리의 공간이기 때문이다 . 우리는 밤새도록 로비 , 소개의 방 , 일하는 방 등을 고객들과 드나들면서 공유한다 . 하지만 뒷방은 오로지 우리만을 위한 곳이다 . 그 날 낮 또는 밤에 일을 하는 모든 이들은 본인이 선택한 섹시한 옷을 입은채로 이 곳을 드나들고 , 날씨가 추우면 ( 반 정도 옷을 벗은 상태라서 거의 늘 춥다 !) 드레싱 가운을 입고 뒹굴면서 간식이나 주문한 저녁을 먹거나 자신의 일이나 삶에 대해서 수다를 떨거나 머리를 식히기 위해 티비를 보거나 가끔은 심지어 공부를 하기도 한다 . 우리는 그 업소의 다른 공간에서처럼 정신을 차려 집중할 필요가 없다 . 그 공간에서 우리는 지나친 정서적 노동을 하지 않 아도 되고 , 조금 긴장을 풀어도 되고 , 다시 모이기도 하고 , 일을 계속 할 수 있도록 우리의 에너지를 충전시키며 간혹 재미있는 시간을 가지기도 한다 . 우리가 일하는 업소는 공식적인 ' 훈련 ' 이나 ' 뒷풀이 ' 절차가 없 지만 뒷방은 관대한 동료들 덕분에 그런 것들을 제공하는 장소가 된다 . 우리는 신입들에게 조언을 해주고 , 서비스가 끝나면 뒷풀 이를 하고 , 서로에게 의욕을 붇돋아주고 , 이 일을 하면서 감정적 인 고갈 상태를 최소화할 수 있는 방법들을 공유한다 . 고객과 시 간을 가질 때 우리는 보통 혼자 일을 하지만 , 내가 뒷방에서 들었 던 수많은 정보들은 내가 더 현명하고 안전하게 일할 수 있게 도 와주었다 . 고객들이 나를 기억할 수 있도록 눈에 띄는 색깔의 옷 을 입으라는 조언이라든가 , 경계선을 분명히 그어서 처음부터 부 드럽게 주도권을 쥔다면 내 주장을 펴기가 쉬워진다는 조언 등이 그것이다 . 성 노동자들이 모이면 지식과 경험이 가득한 보물창고가 열리는 것이다 . 도움이나 조언이 필요한가 ? 뒷방에 물어보시라 !
