Don’t be afraid of the stretch... Over the last 3+ years we have heard a lot of concerns over using minky/cuddle/plush (or whatever you prefer to call it). We are here to tell you - DON’T BE AFRAID! “Quilting with minky is like quilting with butter.” ~Brenda She says it all the time and people are still scared to try it out. There are a few key hints when working with minky/cuddle/plush and doing so will make your life so much easier. When using it to quilt, if you are using it as a back and throwing it on a long arm: STABILIZE. STABILIZE. STABILIZE. Because of what it’s made of, it stretches - so stop the stretch! When Brenda loads a quilt on her long-arm, she always irons on a 2" strip to each CUT END of the backing. The cut end is where the stretch is, so by putting a strip of Pellon 909F on the ends - IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE STRETCH - you now control it. Think of it like a t-shirt quilt: CONTROL THE STRETCH. These other tips are from the Shannon Fabrics website. They have AMAZING tutorials, both in written format and on their YouTube channel. I am a more visual learner, so I prefer the videos. But check them both out! Use double pinning to keep minky fabric stable Lengthen your stitch and lower your pressure Use a 90/14 stretch needle Use a walking foot Sew with polyester thread Use basting spray to keep the fabric smooth and in position
