CARNIVAL IS ME AUTOBIOGRAPHY

REDLAND CITY COUNCIL IMPLEMENTS COUNCILLOR

This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports.

PORTFOLIO SYSTEM

Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.

“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.

Redland City Council has introduced a new representative portfolio system for its Councillors in a move aimed at strengthening service delivery to, and communication with, the community.

Deputy Mayor Julie Talty said the portfolios would operate at the strategic level and focus on areas that will benefit from greater Councillor representation, such as planning matters, community sport, arts, local laws, and economic development.

“Under the portfolio system, Councillors voluntarily commit to take on extra duties within a portfolio and will have responsibility for a specific area of Council,”

Cr Talty said.

Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.

“This will ensure the key areas of the organisation and our main community services are receiving the support and attention they require, and the decisions Council makes are reflective of community needs and expectations.”

Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.

Cr Talty said nine Councillors had been appointed to portfolios and they would serve in the role for the remainder of the Council term.

“These Councillors will provide their input and advice to Council officers on portfolio matters and will lead the advancement of Council’s key strategic priorities in these areas,” she said.

He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).

Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum.

“They will also report back to their fellow Council members and the community on key information and initiatives undertaken by the organisation.

“While not every area of Council is included in the current structure, we will have discussions going forward as a Council to see where other positions could be introduced in future.”

“The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”

LOGAN BUSINESS OWNER RECOGNISED NATIONALLY AND LOCALLY FOR HER GROWING WELLNESS BRAND

Continued from page 1

“I was so excited to be chosen as a finalist. It felt like such a privilege, especially for a business that’s still so new. I was a little disheartened not to win, but I gained so much from the experience, and it reminded me how far I’ve come.”

— Tracey Jurd, Founder, Tracey’s Tender Loving Care

Tracey also received outstanding recognition at the 2024 Logan Business Distinction Awards, hosted by the Logan Chamber of Commerce. She was awarded:

• Winner: Sole Trader of the Year

• Winner: Creative Industries

• Finalist: New and Emerging Business

Tracey says the awards have been a powerful learning experience, opening doors to new connections and growth. Her handcrafted skincare range is now stocked in select supermarkets across Southeast Queensland, and she’s planning for international export opportunities, particularly for her popular Mozzie Buster and other hero products.

“I’ve met other small business owners, had the chance to learn from them, and started thinking even bigger about what’s possible for my business. It’s given me the push to keep improving and expanding my range, and I’m actively seeking investors to take Tracey’s Tender Loving Care nationwide - and beyond.”

Tracey’s award-winning nominations were supported by business strategist and virtual assistant, Caroline Jones, from Ninth Koi Business Solutions, who assisted in crafting compelling submissions that led to her finalist and winner recognition.
