FUTURE, OUR OUR SEVERN
A promise.

“Education at Severn reaches far beyond what you know; it’s about who you are, the promise of who you will be and the impact you can make on the world.”
DOUG LAGARDE, HEAD OF SCHOOL

We envision a world where…
EDUCATION IS ABOUT THE WHO.
Severn School challenges its students to pursue excellence in character, conduct, and scholarship, to marshal the courage to lead, and to contribute to the world around them. We believe this is best realized in a community where adults model these qualities, where a culture of belonging is fostered, and where each student is known and valued.

Our Future, Our Severn is a promise for our students, teachers, and families. It is a promise to sustain our mission to serve our community — past, current, and future — every day and build a community where our students will grow and thrive.
We are capable of extraordinary things as individuals, but together, we can reach even greater heights. Together, we will cultivate the inherent promise of every Severn student.

Today, we serve nearly 900 students from diverse backgrounds ranging in age from 3 to 18. We attract highly qualified faculty from all over the country. Our dynamic and multipurposed learning spaces on the Teel Campus are some of the most innovative and unique in the area. And as a community, we strive to prioritize intellectual curiosity and engagement for each and every student, to keep known and valued at our center, and foster a culture that develops and empowers the whole person.
Our families trust us to be the bedrock upon which their children build their foundation.

In 2022, Severn School’s Board of Trustees and Head of School Doug Lagarde, through thoughtful conversation and evaluation, moved to address the promise in our strategic plan: Leadership Reimagined. This promise – to continue to address our growth in programming as well as people on both campuses – has led us to the decision to make important changes to our school that will have a lasting impact on our legacy and Severn students for the next 100 years.
As we consider what the world will need from future generations, we know we must develop adaptable and applicable cognitive skills and competencies that enable our students to be agile. These priorities will require significant investment of time, energy, and resources as this is our greatest undertaking yet.
Today, we move forward with bold plans for change:
Reimagine the Lower School campus with state-of-the-art learning spaces designed to inspire our youngest learners while building a strong foundation for their continued academic development.
Renovate and upgrade the performing arts facilities on Teel Campus to optimize the venues, ensuring they meet contemporary needs and foster outstanding environments for the performing arts.
“We are the custodians of each child’s promise. This campaign will allow Severn to respond to the challenges foreseen and unexpected and will secure our present and sustain our future for all members of the community.”
DOUG LAGARDE, HEAD OF SCHOOL
