Please join Senator and Mrs. John Astle on November 17th when the Astle Lecture Series presents writer and author Mark Bowden. Bowden received international recognition in 2001 when his book, Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War (Atlantic Monthly Press, 1999), a National Book Award finalist, was made into a movie. Mr Bowden’s other works include the best-sellers The Best Game Ever (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2008), Guests of the Ayatollah (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2006), and Killing Pablo (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2001), which received the Overseas Press Club’s Cornelius Ryan Award as the best book of the year. The award winning Mr. Bowden is currently a contributing editor at Vanity Fair magazine, has served as a staff writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, and has written for Men’s Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, Sports Illustrated, and Rolling Stone. John and Jayne Astle established an endowment fund in 1998 after the tragic accident of their son, David Sheridan Astle ’92. The David Astle Memorial Endowment funds an annual lecture series through which knowledgeable and/or inspirational speakers are invited to share their expertise, experiences and messages with the community.
