Welcome to our Term 3 newsletter As you will see from the contents of this newsletter, we have been extremely busy, as is always the case at Sevenoaks, offering many opportunities for our students to engage with their learning.
We have been focussed this term on recruiting students for our 2026 Year 11 cohort Prospective students have already attended our Open Day, whilst there will be other orientation activities which will happen in term four. We aim to ensure students gain a really thorough understanding of Sevenoaks, our learning environment and our expectations of students in a senior college.
For our Year 12 students, Term 3 is their last full term with us. The time does go by very quickly and I cannot believe we will be farewelling them next term at their presentation ceremony. At the moment, they are working very hard to complete all of their courses to ensure that they achieve the standards required for the next step in their journey toward 2026 and beyond.
Our Year 11 students are now well immersed in Sevenoaks and are making steady progress towards the end of the year They also face commitments to ensure that they complete all of their courses and are ready for 2026. We are excited to provide our Year 11s with the opportunity to attend a river cruise in Term 4. This will be a wonderful addition to our College calendar and reward those students with excellent attendance, behaviour and attitude towards their learning.
We were proud to open our Aboriginal Cultural Learning Centre in week nine. After many conversations with our Aboriginal community, we came up with a wonderful Yarning Circle which will be the centrepiece of future cultural connections for all of our students A big thank-you to Vice Principal Katie Edwards and our administration officer Caroline Griffiths who liaised with significant members of our Aboriginal community and Elders including: Kayleen Hayward (Teacher at Sevenoaks), our Elders in Residence, Mr and Mrs Eades, and their family members.
A particular highlight during Term 3 has been welcoming Year 6 students from nine different primary schools from across the Cannington-Maddington area Students from each primary school joined us for half a day and were involved in a range of activities including nursing skills, visual arts, engineering, physical education and getting to know you activities. Whilst they are very young, we would look forward to welcoming them to Sevenoaks in 2030! Overall, it has been a wonderful experience for the nine primary schools who came along each week and spending a half day with us. We loved welcoming them to Sevenoaks.
I hope you enjoy reading about Sevenoaks and our wonderful vibrant community in this bumper issue
Late this term we celebrated the grand opening of the Sevenoaks Yarning Circle. We have been rewarded by the vision of Vice Principal Katie Edwards to bring this project to a reality with support of Caroline Griffiths (MCS) and the teams at Nature Based Play and Eclipse Soils
It will be used for Yarning, a place of reflection, and a place of learning to enhance the First Nation’s stories of our families and of the significant Elders who have supported us so much with their knowledge of the past: Kayleen Hayward and the Eades family.
We were lucky to welcome back Sevenoaks Follow the Dream (FTD) Alumni, Aaliyah Nestoridis who MC’d the event, and Shane Cole who played the didge. Sevenoaks’ Elder in residence, Mrs Eades, gave a touching Welcome to Country, and our students performed beautiful traditional songs and dance.
Principal, Dr Karen Read, and Mrs Eades then cut the cake, marking the official opening of the space, followed by a delicious morning tea, which included damper and other native foods and beverages
We are as always, grateful to Dr Jennet Hansen and her team through the help of Polly Farmer Foundation Follow the Dream (FTD), BG&E, Langford Aboriginal Association (LAA) and Waalitj Foundation Deadly Sista Girlz for their amazing connections and organisation behind the scenes. What a great day!

Our very own Ms Lynnelle Wilton has been named Curtin University’s Mentor Teacher (Secondary) of the Year for 2025! Lynnelle was nominated by one of her prac students and was then selected as the winner by a panel of teaching specialists.
This award recognises the outstanding effort, commitment, and care that mentor teachers dedicate to supporting pre-service teachers. By guiding, encouraging, and inspiring future educators, Lynnelle played a vital role in shaping the next generation of teachers and the profession itself. Well done!
This term we celebrated R U OK? Day, and what a great day it was! The R U Ok? mission is to guide people on when and how to have a meaningful conversation with someone in their world who might be struggling. We reminded everyone how important it is to check in with their friends and ask, “Are you OK?” – and we did it in the most fun way possible!
The school was buzzing with activities There were cupcakes and smoothies for everyone to enjoy – and they disappeared fast! The photo booth was a hit, with students jumping in with their mates, using fun props and snapping some awesome pics. Over at the painting station with Deadly Sista Girlz Waalitj Foundation, people got creative and added colourful messages and artwork on wooden coasters, all around the theme of kindness and support.
Our Harmony Across Borders Committee also had a great stall looking at the diversity of our school with activities including puzzles and asking “are you okay?” in different native languages.
One of the most talked-about parts of the day was the "Guess the Lollies in the Jar" competition. Everyone gave it a go, trying to work out just how many lollies were packed into that jar It was harder than it looked Congrats to our winner, Year 12 student Chrystal Paull!
The whole day was a great reminder that simply asking someone how they’re doing – and really listening – can make a big difference. It was also a great way for us all to take a break, connect with each other, and spread some positive vibes around the school.
Thanks to our amazing Student Services team and everyone who helped organise the day, it was a huge success and showed just how caring and supportive our school community is. Remember, it’s always a good day to ask “are you okay?”.
This term, some lucky Year 12 students attended the Zero2Hero In Your Head 2025 Conference at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Our students were part of a crowd of over 1,000 from more than 50 schools across WA.
It was a great day listening to keynote speakers like Caitlin Bassett, Harry Garside and Chris Harris. Additionally, our students spent two hours in different breakout sessions, engaging with service providers and participating in mindfulness activities The conference was concluded with performances from 3NA, who rocked the stage and shared some of their own story with the audience.
It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect with themselves and others as well as learning tools and strategies to support their own Mental Health
What a beautiful celebration of stories, imagination, and creativity! Students and staff embraced the theme of “Book an Adventure” with flair, with more than 50 students and staff dressing up as their favourite book characters for our annual celebration.
The Book Week morning tea was amazing, with us all indulging in some villainous treats while playing Kahoot and Bingo too Well done to Angel Sharma who took out first place in both competitions!
A highlight of the day was a captivating talk from Mr Tsoi, our very own teacher and now a published author, who shared insights into the writing process and the power of storytelling through the eyes of Loong, the main protagonist in his book, “A Vampire’s Meeting with Masters”
It was a day of appreciating literature, good food and friends. From costumes to conversations, Book Week is a wonderful reminder of how books can bring us together and spark joy.

Special thanks to our enthusiastic and dedicated students Sanj Grover, Tahlia Murphy, Brandon Smith and Biizhon Cookson who worked hard in making and donating some amazing treats Mrs Burrell and her daughter Natalie baked lemon tarts and show stopping Dubai chocolate cupcakes! How yummy were they?! A special thanks also goes to our amazing Food Tech Assistant, Rosanne, who painstakingly got everything organised in making this event happen. Elaine, Ms Wilton and Dani, thank you for supporting our students in creating and crafting the best marketing strategies for our event.
It is the generosity of our wonderful staff and students who continue to support a very worthy cause and organisation - Muslim Women’s Support Centre (MWSC), that ensures this event is a success. The MWSC help and support women who are experiencing food insecurity, family and domestic violence and displacement, by providing shelter, education and training courses, and fostering relationships with key support services.
The students also get a real thrill in demonstrating their skills in producing, packaging, marketing, teamwork and collaboration and of course customer service and supporting charitable organisations.
This year we raised a whopping $2010.53! Looks like we have broken the record yet again! Thank you for your generosity and support.
We were honoured to welcome representatives from MWSC to the College late this term to meet with our business students and staff for the official cheque presentation. We also proudly donated a range of clothing and homewares from our on-site op shop, Back on the Rack, to MWSC.

Wear it purple empowers LGBTQIA+ youth to dream big and share " bold voices, bright futures" with Australia. In Advocacy, students watched a short clip all about the day and during breaks were able to pick up cool merch such as stickers and bracelets from Student Services staff There was also badge making, a photo booth and of course we can't forget yummy snacks to raise awareness and show support to our LGBTQIA+ community here at Sevenoaks.
Wow, Science Week 2025 went off with a bang! There was something on offer for everyone, from the giant science quiz to FBI fingerprinting to a physics exposé and even a chemistry experiment extravaganza! Thanks to all the students who participated and to Ms McKnight and Mr Hosany for putting on such awesome activities for us all to enjoy!
Our Year 12 ATAR Human Biology class ventured beyond the classroom and into the wild for a captivating educational excursion at Perth Zoo Guided by zoo educators, students explored real-life examples of adaptation, evolution, and conservation through immersive sessions, such as comparative anatomy in "Keeping Up with the Neanderthals," live animal encounters that brought complex biological concepts to life, and collaborative inquiry that linked classification techniques to living examples.
Year 12 ATAR Human Biology students were recently given a unique opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom with an excursion to the renowned Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research
This world-class facility is home to some of Western Australia’s most advanced biomedical research, and our students were fortunate to experience firsthand what it means to work on the frontlines of medical science. Hosted at the Institute’s Lotterywest BioDiscovery Centre, students explored the science of genetic mutations Using real-world laboratory techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis, they investigated inherited mutations and their links to disease. What an incredible opportunity!
This term, our Certificate II Music students had the opportunity to visit Crank Recording studios in Northbridge. Crank is one of the top recording studios in Perth and has hosted Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson and other international stars!
Their sound engineer, Lee Buddle, is an expert in his craft He kindly shared his knowledge and demonstrated his expertise with our students, helping them to record tracks which were then mixed to create a song.
This was an incredibly unique experience for our students, seeing the music industry in action outside of a school setting. It was a fantastic day out and one they will never forget.
Our Business students took an exciting trip to Curtin University this term, which was packed full of fun and learning in new and exciting ways Students loved the scavenger hunt, dupe and debates, and consumer behaviour investigation, but the clear highlight was the ‘Bridge the Gap’ challenge, where students gained an insight into the significance of HR Management and collaborative team-building. Students were asked to build the strongest bridge possible with limited resources.
In true Sevenoaks style, two of our teams broke all records by placing 32 and 42 Jenga blocks respectively, on the bridge they built. The previous record was only 27 blocks! The Curtin presenters couldn’t stop taking photos of the strongest bridge ever built with straws and pop sticks.
GIRLS A DIVISION - The Sevenoaks girls squad had a fantastic day at the Volleyball WA (VWA) tournament at Warwick Stadium and were undefeated in their initial pool with comfortable victories against Merredin and Bob Hawke College. The following round provided a challenge with a hard fought loss (2 sets to 1) against Southern River however, a solid win over Mandurah Baptist.
The girls played to the best of their abilities in the semi-final against Al Ameen College with a straight sets win The grand final was a very close match against Gilmore College that could have went to either side, but unfortunately it did not go our way and we finished the day Runners Up.
Our students were fantastic and their behaviour reflected what Sevenoaks is all about, our sportsmanship, support and encouragement was excellent.
Coach: Mr Middleton MVP: Jordin Sarana Team Members: Jordin, Lani, Chin Chin, Ha-My, Jerrlyn Mae, Justine and Mhartina.
BOYS A DIVISION - What a huge day of volleyball it was. Not only did we show sportsmanship and integrity, we left nothing on the court. We had other teams cheering us on, officials commenting on our spirit, and competitors and coaches commending us on our style of play
Drawing our first game against Ursula Frayne meant we had to win our next two to make finals. We went on to beat Merredin 2-0 and Gilmore in an arm wrestle 2-1 in a tie breaker. The boys held it together and finished on top of their pool to make finals. The semi final saw us take on last year’s finalist, Hampton SHS. The boys had two tightly fought sets, but adrenalin got in the way of a couple of crucial points and we went down 2-0, 29,27 in the first and 30,28 in the second We ended the day 4 overall th

It has been such a manic Term 3; winter blues, various bugs and illnesses going around and some appalling weather systems passing through our state Irrespective of this, we managed to grab some good luck and squeezed in a trip to King's Park.
The sun shone for us as we completed the orienteering trail and practiced our map reading skills. One group broke the record for the fastest finishers which was excellent. Another group now also holds the notoriety of the slowest ever finishers, but the less said about that, the better!
As the weather held up we grabbed some lunch and a few brave souls joined Mrs Owen for a walk across the treetops bridge. 620 metres of a glass bottomed walkway, 52 metres in the air - it's not for everyone. But the brave souls who did cross were rewarded with some stunning views.
As always our students behaved impeccably and we were proud to take them out on a fun day in the sun!
Students were presented with a box of surprise ingredients and tasked with creating a unique dish under the pressure of a simulated commercial kitchen environment.
The challenge tested not only their cooking skills, but also their creativity, teamwork, and ability to think on their feet. Judges assessed the dishes based on taste, presentation, and how well students worked as a team.
The event created a buzz of excitement throughout the Academy, with students showcasing impressive culinary flair. Well done all!
Late this term, East Metropolitan Health Service and Local Drug Action Teams visited us to announce the winner of the Alcohol Awareness Campaign Challenge! Huge congratulations to our winning team: Liam, Kyesha and Jackson. We can’t wait to see the campaign develop over coming weeks!
We received some kind words from the team... “Your assistance was instrumental in engaging and encouraging the students across the three education sessions It was through your support that we were able to deliver this program, which highlighted the critical issue of alcohol advertising in the community and gave students the opportunity to think both creatively and critically about how they could make a difference. The enthusiasm and creativity shown by the students are a clear reflection of your dedication to fostering a supportive and inspiring learning environment. We sincerely appreciate your efforts in encouraging student participation in this program Your support has played a key role in helping us advance our mission to reduce alcohol-related harm in our local communities. We are truly grateful for your partnership and the positive impact you’ve helped create.”
The Francis Burt Law Education Programme is designed to teach the general community about the rule of law, our legal principles and the Australian court system, and we were lucky enough to spend the day at the Old Court House Law Museum and Perth Magistrates Court seeing all this in action.
Our day was so interesting, starting off with a tour of The Old Court House, the oldest building in the City of Perth, built in 1836 Our guide Dean was extremely knowledgeable walking us through the Supreme and Magistrates Court. We were privileged to observe a court in session and saw three defendants remanded into custody.
We finished our day with a scripted mock trial where we were all characters playing a role. Luckily our defendant was found not guilty and we were all allowed to go home!
Kaya everyone,
Wow! Term 3 has flown by! As we reach the end of another busy term, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on the many highlights we’ve shared. This term has been rich with learning, growth, and connection from classroom achievements and cultural celebrations to excursions, community partnerships, and student successes Each experience has deepened our sense of pride and belonging, and it’s been wonderful to see the effort, energy, and spirit of our community shine through. Here’s a snapshot of the moments that made Term 3 so memorable!

Our students, Ella-Rose McBeath and Tahlia Pabai, were privileged to attend the sold-out Annual Human Rights Lecture at Curtin University and meet Dr Tracy Westerman AM.
Dr Westerman, Western Australia’s Australian of the Year in 2018, is a proud Nyamal woman from the Pilbara region and a nationally recognised leader in Aboriginal mental health, suicide prevention, and cultural competency. In 2003, she became the first Aboriginal person to complete a combined Master’s and PhD in Clinical Psychology. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology and a master’s degree in clinical psychology.
Her achievements are especially remarkable given her background of disadvantage and the fact that she completed most of her tertiary entrance subjects through Distance Education. Dr Westerman’s story is an inspiring example of resilience, determination, and leadership for our students. Ella Rose is keen to study psychology in 2026 and will be signing up for Dr Westerman’s Jilya Institute.

NIAA works in genuine partnership to enable the self-determination and aspirations of First Nations communities They implement the Australian Governments’ priorities and support the Minister for Indigenous Australians. Our students, together with Shane Cole, performed at both events with pride and continue to demonstrate the outstanding work we do at Sevenoaks in supporting and strengthening the cultural identity of our students.
Our students attended the Annual Follow the Dream Careers Expo, exploring numerous career stalls and participating in hands-on activities. Keynote speaker Cheroke Ugle, Follow the Dream alumna and Miss NAIDOC Perth 2025, inspired students to walk proudly in their culture and dreams. Thanks to the Hon. Divina D’Anna MLA for officially opening the Expo, and to the Polly Farmer Team for hosting an event of this magnitude to bring all Follow the Dream students from across WA together
A huge congratulations to our Year 12 trade students, Chrystal Paull and Alyssa Kelly, who have been offered apprenticeships with our TEC Consortium partner, Cummins South Pacific Being a global leader in innovation, Cummins receive over 500 apprenticeship applications each year and with only six positions available in 2026, to have two of those apprenticeships offered to our students is an outstanding achievement. We couldn’t be more proud!
Both Chrystal and Alyssa completed highly successful work placements with Cummins, where they demonstrated exceptional passion, knowledge, skill, and enthusiasm for their chosen trade pathway. During site visits and conversations with their supervisors, it was clear that both students had truly embraced the opportunity, immersing themselves in every aspect of their work placement and leaving a lasting impression.
Well done to everyone who has supported Alyssa and Chrystal on their journey at Sevenoaks. A special thank you to the trade teachers who have generously shared their expertise and provided invaluable hands-on learning opportunities. As we wrap up Term 3, it’s a great time to acknowledge the incredible support we’ve received from our host employers across various industries.
Their willingness to mentor and guide our students has made a real impact, not only on the students’ skill development but also on their confidence and sense of purpose Whether in administration, retail, trades, health or hospitality, our students have stepped up and contributed meaningfully to their workplaces. It’s been reassuring to see how many employers genuinely enjoy having our students on board, offering valuable learning experiences. This strong community partnership is a testament to the success of our program.
From week 6-9 this term, students who nominated a team played in a Monday and Tuesday lunch time round robin futsal tournament organised by Coach Mcleay.
We had a mix of Year 11 and 12 students across 5 teams who battled it out in the school Gym.
Each lunch break, there were two fixtured matches and the four teams with the most points at the end of week 8 progressed into a semi final play off The two teams who won those semi finals and finished on the most points then played off in the grand final, which was held in week 9.
Our two finalists this year were 'Lil Nuggets' (Year 11's) and 'Dame un Grr' (Year 12's). After a hard fought final that resulted in a tie, there was then a sudden death penalty shoot out which went 8 rounds! At one point, we even had to check the VAR!
