Historic Discovery Park Residence
History Meets Sanctuary
Live within Seattle’s largest green space, iconic Discovery Park! Unlike the military housing in San Francisco’s renowned Presidio, which can only be leased, not owned, the sought-after Discovery Park homes were first listed for sale in 2015-16 and have rarely appeared on the market since then. This gracious historic residence, built as Fort Lawton officer’s quarters, has been faithfully restored and thoughtfully updated under the guidance of City of Seattle’s landmarks preservation board. Classic, timeless finishes preserve original character and charm; the most modern systems, like in-floor hydronic heating, assure comfort. Luxuriate in high-ceilinged dignity.
Entertain on the oversized private green anchored by a towering sequoia grove. Cherish stewardship of 534-acre Discovery Park’s meadow lands and forests, dramatic sea cliffs and active sand dunes –minutes from urban amenities and major employers.

Heritage Parkland

Genius of the Place. Based on John Charles Olmsted’s 1903 plan to transform what was then the infantry encampment Fort Lawton into a public park to anchor the system of undulating boulevards and green spaces Olmsted designed for Seattle, the 1972 Discovery Park Master Plan by notable landscape architect Dan Kiley (1912-2004) preserves the wild meadows and forests of Magnolia Bluff. Celebrated for his collaborations with modernist architects (including I.M. Pei, Eero Saarinen, and Louis Kahn), Kiley brought decorum and restraint to his subtractive design for the park and allowed the spectacular natural landscape to reveal itself from cunningly sited clearings and vantage points.
Stewardship of the Land. Discovery Park’s genesis and history are intertwined with community organizing and volunteerism. Citizens for a Fort Lawton Park (founded 1968) successfully agitated against continued military use of the land. Its successor, Friends of Discovery Park, through education, fundraising and conservation, actively protects Kiley’s vision for the park. By contrast to the transient armed services divisions once stationed here, the army of volunteers marshaled by Friends of Discovery Park is rooted in community. You are invited to share in its stewardship as Discovery Park celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Restorative Green Space

“The primary role of this park in the life of the city is dictated by its incomparable site. That role should be to provide an open space of quiet and tranquility for the citizens of this city – a sanctuary where they might escape the turmoil of the city and enjoy the rejuvenation which quiet and solitude and an intimate contact with nature can bring.”
~ Dan Kiley, landscape architect, Discovery Park Master Plan, 1972
